A word from Not Your Average Joe's Watertown
What does creative casual cuisine mean?
Exactly what it says. We’re creative, because we reject the same-old-same-old in favor of tastes that are interesting and unique. We’re casual because while our food may be worth getting dressed up for, we invite you to come as you are. We’re all about cuisine in the sense that our chefs apply high standards of culinary art.
There it is. Creative. Casual. Cuisine. If it sounds like your kind of place, then you – like us- are not your average Joe.

Very good food, especially the seasonal entrees like the butternut squash filled cannelloni and chicken. We were in a hurry due to an appointment and the OpenTable reservation was key as was informing the hostess and our waitress of our timeline. Everything worked out perfectly!

The food was good, above average. The wait was ridiculous, the waitress forgot to put in our appetizer, then they ran out of it by the time she remembered us. The manager asked us how everything was, we told him about the experience politely an he just said, "Oh. Yeah." What kind of response is that? It wa just awkward.

Our first dinner out with everyone back from school, we were thrilled to be able to get a reservation at this Average Joe's. The food was delicious, then ambiance was very nice, however we felt very rushed, and were not even offered coffee or desert. It made a very nice experience to not a very good one at all.

After a not very good experience with their service on my birthday, I let the restaurant know about it -- they reached out to me and encouraged me to give them another try. I did, and it was like night and day -- back to the Not Your Average Joe's I knew, with prompt, cheerful, accurate and attentive service, and good food at good prices. Plus, their bartenders know how to make martinis! I'm convinced it was a one-time blip, and I will be going back.

This is a great asset to the Watertown/Belmont restaurant scene. Nice menu with many choices. Good tasting food. Generous portions. very reasonably priced. Very fine service staff. The manager even came to our table to make sure everything was to our liking and to thank us for choosing his restaurant for our dining exerience that night. Way cool.

Have been going to NYAJ for years. Ordered the Goat Cheese dinner salad. The "cheese balls" were like eating pieces of cheesecake -- so much sugar added that there was no taste of goat cheese. The dressing was thick, syrupy and sweet. This is a dessert dish -- far from the light refreshing salad of it's origins. We also had the seared tuna salad. it was tasty but only had 4 tiny pieces of tuna -- really skimpy. The service was good but the restaurant is getting worn down. The booth we sat at had tears in the seat. Hopefully it is only Watertown that is this worn out.

We ordered 2 items off the specials & they were both exceptional. We've eaten @ NYAJ's many times before, but this was by far the best meal we've had there, on a par with some top notch restaurants! I had pork rubbed w/ Indian spices and on a bed of sweet potato carrot mash w/ sauteed swiss chard. THe flavors were delicious & it was perfectly cooked. My husband, who fishes & cooks, had the fish special, flounder, on smoked cheese risotto. The fish was perfectly cooked, not too dry or undercooked, & moist and tasty & was delicious. THis was an excellent meal!

Not Your Average Joe's is far and away the best "chain" restaurant I've ever eaten at -- one of our favorite places for lunch. Their salads are inventive and really well-done, and the option to add chicken, steak or salmon to anything makes for a great meal (sometimes two!) The menu changes regularly to keep things interesting and the food is consistently fresh and delicious. And their bread and dipping oil (full of grated cheese) is yummy! The service at our location in Watertown is always well-paced and solicitous without constantly interrupting our conversation. Watertown has a lovely patio, which we always enjoy, but it can get very sunny. If only those umbrellas tilted ... Still, an excellent experience all around.

I love Joes. Our dinners were good although a few in the party tried new things and werent crazy about them - basil chicken was overcooked and the mexican steak was so so. But there are so many great things on the menu- one can find something they love. Biggest complaint of evening - it was TOO COLD - the air conditioning was up so high it felt like a meat cooler. I know this is hard to control when temps go up and down outside but boy we couldnt enjoy the meal as we were shivering. We should have eaten outside.

If consistency is what you are looking for it hits the mark. Nothing notable, but nothing bad. The dipping oils for the bread some of the best I have had and the cocktails were reasonably priced. BIG plus though is an extensive gluten free menu that actually tastes great. I will be back here again.

Its was my first trip to a not your average joes for my pre birthday dinner. .I made my reservation for one online. .upon entering the restaurant I was greated by a friendly hosted who called me by name and sat me 15 minutes earlier then my reservation. .I was then greated by joanna my waitress. ..who took my order...she was friendly and my food wasserved promptly. ...the herb crusted haddock fries and coleslaw was delicious. ..and as was the carrot cake I got to go...my experience was five stars...and by the way my entree and dessert was free because I had joined the e-club and you get a free meal for your birthday. .

This was our first experience at the restaurant. The menu is brilliant, the manager was attentive to new guests, the food was very well presented and very good, and the server was at best mediocre. The server did not spoil the meal, but just did not know how to serve. Training was probably the issue

Please ignore the nickname NOSOMUCH, I can't change it from a bad review a long time ago. Not Your Average Joe's (NYAJ) has really mastered the neighborhood dining spot. Somewhere you can eat delicious home cooked food everyday and get something different. The summer special we had, tuna tartare on cucumber with yummy sauces were awesome, and filling. Went right to dessert - and oh my - the BEST strawberry shortcake you can other than my grandmother's!!! Homemade biscuits and delicious fresh soaked strawberry's on top.

The "peachy keen chicken kabob". The 5-6 chicken pieces were very dry and burnt . Served @ room temp, not sure if the corn, avocado, peach salsa was meant to be cold or hot. The nice server offered to bring more chicken but I cut off the black bits and drank my husbands water after my own. Should've stuck with my usual mustard chicken. Love NYAJs but worse meal ever.

Unfortunately, the Throw Back Menu celebrating their 20 years in business ends on July 15, 2014. The classic appetizers and entrees going back to 1994 are only $19.94 until then. Several selections still will remain on the current menu as well as an eclectic number of new additions. The wine list is ample and reasonable. All over a great time was had by all.

My husband and I enjoyed an early dinner at NYAJ in Watertown. I really enjoyed the atmosphere, the service and the food. We especially liked the specials....the pork tenderloin and Anderson Valley Summer solstice Ale. I also appreciated the service from both the hostess, who was cheerful when we asked to be seated somewhere else and the waiter, who was very helpful. I liked the vibe and the decor and would certainly go back.
