Diner Reviews
  • "Never had one meal that wasn't satisfying. Delicious. Go there with a date, friend or friends and you will never be disappointed. "

  • "I'm a big fan and frequenter of Oven and Shaker so when I found out Nostrana had the same owner, I definitely had to try it! Delicious pizza (I got the Alla Fiama) but great wine. Service wasn't too great though; that's why I had to give my review 4/5 instead of 5/5 stars. The hostess was polite, but our waitress wasn't too great. She was spacey, distracted, inattentive, and a little unknowledgable regarding the wines served at the restaurant. Our waitress rarely visited our table, and the few times she did, she would walk away mid-sentence to do something else and then come back. Unacceptable for a restaurant with Nostrana's reputation! Definitely didn't disappoint in the appetizer and food part though ;) "

  • "OK, we all know that eating out on a Saturday night means that you are going to the restaurant at its most slammed time. That being said, the service was somewhat slow and moderately indifferent. We had made an OpenTable reservation in advance, but our party of six was accommodated at a table best left to four, so the feeling was definitely that of being squeezed in. All the food was quite delightful, and other than a feeling of being somewhat ignored, the service was quite adequate and non-intrusive. I feel that Nostrana used to be more up on its game, in the sense that it could handle the peak times with grace. This night things were calm and competent, but I left feeling less than pampered."

  • "The food here is great and we love the wine list. We've been to Nostrana several times in the past for lunch and dinner. When we got married on a weekday we thought this would be a good place to celebrate with friends for dinner. We have no complaints about the food and wine but the service was just so-so. They left dishes on the table for way too long for one thing. We were 6 people shoved into a table for 4. Pretty cramped. No one showed any recognition of our wedding day. We made it clear at the time of the reservation AND we were carrying flowers (reminder right?). All in all it was a fine meal but if you are looking to celebrate a special day I would go somewhere else where they help to make you feel special."

  • "My second or third time here. First time for my girlfriend so we ordered and shared courses. Started with the charcuterie plate, 10 tastes of amazing creations, each stood on its own, but the whole plate was harmonious. Then the insalata nostrana, very rich and flavorful caesar with radicchio. The pasta course was pappardelle with nettle/almond pesto, stuffed with goat cheese. Rich and complex, with high notes of lemon to balance the earthy nettles and sweet cheese. Our main course was the pork belly stuffed with sausage, with Tuscan lentils and sauted collard greens. The pork belly was perfectly cooked with a crispy skin and melting flesh. Best collard greens I have ever had, sauted but still bright green."

  • "We were there on gnocchi Thursday and the fresh gnocchi were awesome! Our table also had a pizza and the porchetta; the food was all great."

  • "My wife and I went with another couple for dinner. We started with pizza which was amazing. We shared a couple of salads and pasta dishes and then shared 3 entrees. All of it was excellent and prepared perfectly. Great spot! I'd definitely go back."

  • "Yummy salad, pizza and pasta! Loved the high ceiling, wood stove for the pizza and excellent service. I find the prices very reasonable."

  • "Nostrana was great as usual. Very good food, unobtrusive service. Not too loud, but active. It is comfortable and reasonably priced. Just what every neighborhood needs."

  • "Our party of 4 had the good fortune to dine at Nostrana on "Gnocci" night. We each sampled a different variety and no one was disappointed. All the dishes were returned empty to the kitchen. The mixed salad was served in a large bowl, big enough to share and although not full of exotic ingredients, was very carefully prepared. Diners dress their own salads with oil, vinegar and good salt. We can not remember when we experienced such a delicious dinner."

  • "Unique Portland dining experience with dramatic high ceilings, wood fired oven. Great, thin crust pizza and house made pasta. Check the salt level when ordering entrees."

  • "We had a reservation for 6 and at the last minute 3 of our friends decided to come. The place was packed but luckily someone called and cancelled their reservation leaving an open table. They moved a few things and made room for our extra party which was great. Our server on the other hand was horrible. The past three times we've been there we've always had the guy with the handle bar mustache and he's absolutely wonderful!! But this time we got a new server and she seemed like she had an attitude the entire time. She was very short, didn't smile much and was very soft spoken when asking our large party anything. The food is always amazing so I will definitely be back and I will be sure to ask for the mustache!"

  • "Excellent menu: I liked that they seem to put their own personal touch on every dish. They even make their own tonic water! If you’re on a budget this is probably not where you want to go. For example, my husband’s Halibut was $30 and the vast majority of the wines started in the $40 range and went well beyond that. In the end we averaged a little over $100 per person. The staff were all very friendly and helpful, and our server was great. Really the only slightly negative thing I can say is that the noise level is quite high. I think it’s difficult to enjoy a nice dinner when you have to raise your voice to talk and strain your ears to hear. So probably not the place for a romantic dinner but definitely a place for great food."

  • "I have been to this restaurant three times, and two of the three times the service has been unfriendly and rude. The most recent dinner with out of town guests was a deciding factor, we will not be back or recommend it. We booked an early time, and were seated very close to the bar where wait staff was coming and going close to our table, and scraping the back of my chair. As there were many other tables, we asked if we could move - and the "manager" said, yes but was somewhat snarky is his remarks about "it being noisy anywhere we sat" (which was not our concern.) The prior visit a similar response happened from a male waiter when we asked questions about the food. We won't be back."

  • "We came because of the James Beard nomination. We thought it was very reasonably priced, good wine list, food was good. I am from out of town and it's a $12 cab ride from downtown. Would I make the trip back? Probably not. Didn't think the food was worth spending the time or money to get there. Good, for sure, just not over the top great."

  • "One of my go-to places when I travel to Portland; I've never been disappointed. Had some finicky meat-eaters in my party and I ordered for the group and we ate family style; one of the entree's was the aged Bisteca... not a morsel was left on the platters!"

  • "Love love love the food at NOSTRANA. This time I had the pork braciole, at lunch recently the funghi pizza. Seriously the complexity of tastes makes this food a step..no, a staircase, above most restaurants. A gem in Portland. The space is comfortable and it looks like every detail was planned. The open fire with NOSTRANA in large letters always gets my attention. Professional able and cordial timely service."

  • "The dining room is a touch cramped but high exposed ceilings relieve the claustrophobia. A few touches of lively plants and glass pieces augment the clean wooden decorative approach. The Nostrana salad is a revelatory take on a traditional Caesar. It is a must. My partner ordered the 7-day aged steak and I didn't see him look up until he was done eating. My trout was simple and elegant. A perfect new Italian dining experience."

  • "Absolutely lovely 21/2 hour evening. Wine list is impressive, but as usual, astronomically over priced. Food is outstanding, changing daily. Wood fired roast chicken is irresistible."

  • "4 foodies sitting around deconstructing what was served to us before the next course. Awesome"

  • "The serving staff has improved considerably from our outings a few years ago when you could count on them forgetting something. The cocktail menu offered more interesting choices than we expected for a non-bar restaurant. The food remains well executed but for example the seafood gnocchi was missing the mussels and the seasonal pizza had twice the greens and half the mushrooms that it should. The gnocchi themselves were heart-breakingly tender and worth going on a Thursday just to order them. The wine list seemed thoughtful but we found it somewhat challenging to choose a bottle. The seafood made me wish for a Chablis or Sancerre. But, the menu nudged us to try Chehalem Gruner Veltliner, which we enjoyed."

  • "Had lunch there with a new friend and split a mushroom pizza with arugula that was fantastic! Crisp tasty, tasty crust and well seasoned topping. Pretty, too! House salad was pretty and delicious. Very attractive interior design. Patio will be great in lovely Portland summers. Been there for dinner and headed back next week. Love this place."

  • "I am sorry to tell you we were very disappointed. We had a good salad, but also had the crab pizza and it was very disappointing. I don't know why anyone would rave about it. It had very little cheese, hardly any crab and was warm, but not hot. I would not eat there again."

  • "Great Pizza, terrific Apple crisp and lovely salad. Great place!"

  • "I can't speak to the full menu, though it looked impressive, as I've only been to Nostrana for their 9pm happy hour. It was crowded and vibrant on a Friday night. The happy hour menu is small, but it's a great bargain -- $6-8 for a beautiful thin-crust pizza can't be beat."

  • "We received a gift certificate to Nostrana and had never been there before. The House charcuterie antipasti was beautifully presented and tasty. We had the Fettuccine with meaty meat balls and a mushroom pizza. I would return for a pizza in a heartbeat. There are about 5 or 6 others. I loved the luscious blood orange Sanguineilo cocktail, too. We wanted to try dessert but we were just too full!"

  • "We had some of the most interesting food we have eaten in years at Nostrana. I'd go out of my way just to have the Insalata Nostrana again. On the other hand, the Insalata Mista was a big (oversized) disappointment. The portion could have served three people and it came undressed with carafes of oil and vinegar. The lettuce leaves were unbroken and there was no way to properly toss it. AVOID IT! The Spicy Seared Ahi Tuna was terrific with a great mix of flavors. The pork saltimbocca had many interesting flavors but the pork was a bit dry and therefore tougher than it should have been. The list of wines by the glass had many temptations and we were well guided by our waitress. I would definitely return."

  • "Typical meal here. The pizza is good not great. The pizza's at sister restaurant, Oven and Shaker, have a more firm crust. The salad portions look smaller but are the same quality. Service here is always a coin toss.,Tonight's main server was pleasant but disinterested. It drives me crazy when it's obvious you are finished eating and your server doesn't check to see if you are ready to pay unless you flag them down"

  • "The food was actually very good. But, for the price the portions were small. The cheese plate was 14 dollars and there were 3 crackers, 5 pieces of cheese and teeny tiny slices of vegan salami. I had the fettucini, it was 18 dollars and it was probably about a cups worth of noodles. The bread and drinks were delicious! I recommend the pizza! The pizza portion was right for the price!"

  • "I had only two complaints - the service was quite slow and our food wasn't hot enough. But it was probably bevause we were there on a busy Sat night. I'm certainly going to give it another try."

  • "Menu selection was diverse and the food prepared/presented wonderfully. The intimate dining room makes for a lively dinner but the noise level is in-character with the ambiance and with good separation between tables. An overall enjoyable experience with excellent quality food. The pizzas are particularly "Italy genuine.""
