Each night the menu was different and the fresh foods were all used so well. We really enjoyed everything ordered at our table for 6. The Alaskan haddock was very well prepared and the use of ramps was wonderful. My husband loved his oysters. The skirt steak was done to perfection and my, my, my, the mashed potatoes were great. Food was served hot and all at the table were served at the same time (always appreciated). The quality of the ingredients was excellent and the food very tasty. We got a late start, and the restaurant was great about accomodating us well past our reservation time. The room is wonderful, light & airy with an extremely high ceiling, but the venue was still comfortable. We ordered the happy hour The pizzas, and they were delicioius. My halibut was prepared and served beautifully. Appetizers and salad were also very good. Nice choices for wine by the glass, and two top-notch martinis. It was hard to choose among the pasta dishes, entrees and pizzas. There were four of us and it was easy to converse. There was a large party seated near us, where several tables had been put together. I also saw several families with small children. We got to share your wonderful neighborhood gem with a couple for their first time. After one gets hit with the inital amazing smells the event begins with the most wonderful bread and olive oil
Service was high level and right on. Needed help with picking an Italian red and our sever along with the educated wine and beverge manager found a gem for us.
Entrees came out right on time even with a full restaurant on a Sunday night.

My wife and son agree. We have been dining there for several years, and they have never disappointed us. Because it is so popular, reservations are essential. And, because it is usually full with a waiting line, the noise level is a little more than I would prefer; but when a place is this popular, a higher noise level is easy to forgive. Our party of three all had fresh halibut that was cooked to perfection. With our dinner, we enjoyed a reasonably priced Chianti Classico. Although we don't normally have dessert, the dessert menu is just too tempting. We shared an especially delicious chocolate creation that came with ample whipped cream. The menu items are expensive. So expensive that all five people in our party ordered pizza, one of the least expensive items on the menu. But I need to say the food was excellent - the crust was wonderful - crunchy on the edges, really yummy topping. We were served in good time, too. Dessert was also yummy.
Really interesting rustic, urban atmosphere, but loud...very loud. Not a great place for conversation. It's all one big area so the noise made it hard for all of us to hear each other.
In the end I would probably not choose this restaurant again.4/4/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Portland DiningAfter 12 years of eating all over Portland, we finally tried Nostrana. It was amazing. I don't know why we never ate here before. The ricotta stuffed pork chop was great as was the tagliani pasta. Service was impeccable and even though there was a table of 14 next to us, we didn't feel like we were lost in their shadow service-wise. Arrived on time and was seated promptly. Service was timely and efficient without hovering. Had the Funghi Verde pizza as an appetizer. Absolutely outstanding pizza from their wood-fired oven. Everyone enjoyed their entrees as well. The energy, noise level was energetic. About right for a Friday night but not so loud that it was hard to hold a conversation. Ordering drinks, appetizers, salads, entrees and desserts from their wide variety of menu offerings never once created a challenge for this skilled team. Each arrival was well presented and delectable. My personal favorites were the roast chicken and apple crisp. The "rooster candle" for our birthday girl of 71 was a nice festive touch. We shared there FAMOUS Nostrana salad, The funghi verde pizza, & the baked gnocchi. The salad & pizza were great, as always (consistency can be counted on@ this restaurant). The baked gnocchi was "to die for." We will return SOON on Thursdays!!
