LunchI was a little disappointed in that the entrees for lunch were very limited. The pizza was good but the crust tended to be a bit soggy even though it was a margarita pizza. The ceilings are high so it is very noisy, when the restaurant is busy! However, I would go back because I have had wonderful dinners there!6/12/2013 12:00:00 AMFood was awesome (we all hadFood was awesome (we all had pizza), but the server was incredibly haughty and rude. The music was very loud and didn't seem to fit the atmosphere, but that's a bigger problem for some people than others.6/11/2013 12:00:00 AMGraduation DinnerWe celebrated my son's high school at Nostrana. We had a very friendly, knowledgable, and attentive wait staff help us through the creative menu items and make suggestions. We ordered their special house Ceasar salad and three pizzas. Each new slice was better than the previous as our favorite pizza continued to change as we moved through the feast. We ordered the baked crisp for dessert but had to take it to go as we had to hurry off to the ceremony. We allowed 90 minutes for dinner bit but needed 2 hours to enjoy their complete dining experience. Overall great experuence.6/10/2013 12:00:00 AMMeal not great this timeWe've been going to Nostrana for several years and have normally been very happy with our food. Not so much this time. The porcini mushroom salad was not a good value. The bread was thin, and hardly any food on the plate given the price - one thinly sliced porcini for the four of us. The shrimp were tasty, but again, given the price, small portion (four). The salmon was good, but portions very small. Maybe 2 or 3 ounces of salmon and a very, very small portion of spinach ) for 28! But definitely much smaller portions that I ever remember, so I would say absolutely not a good value. We had taken some friends here for their first time, and to be honest, I was very embarrassed of the price given what we received in food.6/7/2013 12:00:00 AMMy go-to spotEverything is awesome! Service, food, drinks, ambiance! As suggested it is great for everything. I have my birthday dinner here every year. It is a great place that accommodates an eclectic set of people. I can bring my boss, best friends, kids, grandparents. This place has some of the best pizza in the city, but I highly recommend trying some of the main dishes, they are absolutely beautiful. And DO NOT skip dessert.
Service is amazingly professional yet laid-back.6/7/2013 12:00:00 AMThe food was tasty, the serviceThe food was tasty, the service was great but the setting was uncomfortable. Our table was bolted to the floor & we were placed near a firewood storage pile so I could not "sit" properly because my back chair leg hit the storage platform. I sat on the corner 1/3 of the table. Seating for 2 would have been fine but we had 3.
Pricing was not appropriate for the location of the restaurant & the setting. Pricing was higher than I would have expected for a casual, neighborhood restaurant that feels like you are in a barn. It was not at the level of food, service, plating, or setting such as a 5 star restaurant would rate.
As I rated the overall experience as a 4 star, we would go back again but it would not be my first choice for the price.6/5/2013 12:00:00 AMYummy pizza and great serviceNostrana is one of our Portland favorites, both for the pizza, the entrees, and the cocktails. The menu changes often and everything tastes fresh. Great flavor combinations and creative dishes. Start with something from the cocktail list and move on to the wood-fired pizza, which comes with scissors for added fun at cutting time! Handmade pastas shine as well.6/4/2013 12:00:00 AMAnother great experienceI met a friend for lunch and we had the pleasure of dining outside with sun umbrellas for suitable shade. It was great! The food was fantastic with one exception - the rotisserie chicken skin tasted a little like gas or exhaust. I simply removed the skin and enjoyed the tender meat with brasied kale and polenta. A perfect summer lunch.
You can expect great food, inspired by Marcella Hazan, in a relaxing, not-to-fussy envrironment. We have a favorite waiter because we have found the service hit or miss. He delivers consistently good service and excellent wine recommendations.
Twice we have had the pleasure of meeting Cathy - the chef owner. I like that she takes the time to walk around and get to meet patrons and guests.6/4/2013 12:00:00 AMFamily FavoriteNostrana never fails to deliver but last week's experience was the best one yet. Service and food were superb. It's the best value in town and we agreed that it remains our Portland favorite.6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMThursday night is gnocchiThursday night is gnocchi night. Potato and semolina were both very tasty and had great texture. Wonderful radicchio caesar dressed salad. Lots of wonderful bread with olive oil. Wood fired pizza. Service was superb, friendly and personable. Atmosphere is comfortable and casual. Visit often for large meal or small bite.5/30/2013 12:00:00 AMLives up to its reputationI am never disappointed with this restaurant. The combination of outstanding food, casual but knowledgeable service, and an ambiance that is warm and comfortable is worth trying over and over again.5/29/2013 12:00:00 AMAlways specialHave been to Nostrana about a dozen times over the last 5 years. Consistently excellent food and service whether for a special celebration or just a good dinner. Love that they use lots of seasonal/local foods. Must have a reservation - this place is always busy. Using Open Table was easy and fast.5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMContemporary Italian ExperienceDined with friends who live in the Portland area. We were visiting from out of town and picked it because we wanted good Italian food and this place ranked high. We bought our own wine and paid the corkage fee and our server was very pleasant about it(we offered him a taste of it). The atmosphere was quite pleasant, the bar is very cool and they have a fun selection of non-alcoholic cocktails for non-drinkers. Portions are rather small but food was yummy. Service was efficient and pleasant but not overdone. If I lived in the area I would go back and sit at the counter where I could see them making the pizzas!5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMFabulous lunchMy family (group of 7) ate here for a celebratory lunch and were treated to great cocktails and beautiful food. Everything I ordered I would order again in a heartbeat. Try the Rubarbarella cocktail, the Nostrana salad (forgot the name- their take on a Caesar-- one of the best salads I've ever had), the mushroom pizza with arugula, and the panne cotta or the chocolate hazelnut tarte. Perfect lunch. Oh, and the bread and olive oil are ridiculous.5/21/2013 12:00:00 AMThe best ItalianGreat pasta, excellent pizza. Big wine selection. Nice outdoor area. What more do you need?5/20/2013 12:00:00 AMFrom appetizers to desert,From appetizers to desert, outstanding. This is the 3rd time I've eaten at Nostrana & I've never been disappointed. The food is prepared with great care & there are always great specials.
Reservations are strongly suggested.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat late night happy hourMy wife and I drove into Portland late and met some friends. We hadn't eaten and found this place, which has a late night happy hour that starts at 9pm and features some amazing food and drink specials. Driving up, it doesn't look like anything special, but inside it has a nice ambiance and the food, from a James Beard finalist, is incredible. I highly recommend it.5/17/2013 12:00:00 AMNo, that's NOT a strip mallMy guest and I had a long discussion about how you put a five-star restaurant in a strip mall successfully. The answer we came up with was: "only in Portland." And, to be fair, it's not an average "strip mall. The stores are QUITE upscale and there's more than just five diagonals of parking and a 7/11. The key is LOCATION. It's on the eastern edge of the rapidly developing "Morrison Corridor" and right across the street from a happening new bar: CRUSH.
So, yes, the location is desirable and you quickly get over the idea that it's not sitting in a quiet nook because they create a wonderful inside atmosphere in their large, open space.
The food was wonderful, and arranged so that it could be enjoyed in courses. A great find.5/17/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful menuThe menu here changes often and I love returning to see what treasure there will be. The service this time was slow because they were so crowded and the ovens were extra busy.. The cocktails and wines are always excellent as well.5/14/2013 12:00:00 AMMeatball Monday in PortlandDoes it get better than sitting outside at Nostrana on a nice spring evening, sipping a Hemingway Daiquiri, and waiting for a really good pizza? The answer is yes - when you're doing it on Meatball Monday.5/6/2013 12:00:00 AMFood was well prepared imaginativeFood was well prepared imaginative and tasty. Staff was professional and competent. Will be back.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMfirst meal t nostranaCould't have been better.Everything from cocktails through dessert and expresso exceeded expectations. Smoked chicken was good, lamb chops as well.4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMLoved this restaurant so muchLoved this restaurant so much that we went back 2 nights later. Each night the menu was different and the fresh foods were all used so well. We really enjoyed everything ordered at our table for 6. The Alaskan haddock was very well prepared and the use of ramps was wonderful. My husband loved his oysters. The skirt steak was done to perfection and my, my, my, the mashed potatoes were great. Loved the lemoncello and I will TRY to make it at home.4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMIt was fantastic..sorry weIt was fantastic..sorry we don't live in Portland so we could go back...it was delightful! All of our meals were fresh and delicious..4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMNostrana continues to rule.We were seated promptly and our table was just perfect as it was set just slightly apart from the noisiest areas and not so close to other tables that we couldn't visit. Food was served hot and all at the table were served at the same time (always appreciated). The quality of the ingredients was excellent and the food very tasty. Our servers were efficient and professional.4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMNostrana April 20, 2013My brother, his friend and I enjoyed a great dinner at Nostrana, celebrating my birthday. We got a late start, and the restaurant was great about accomodating us well past our reservation time. The room is wonderful, light & airy with an extremely high ceiling, but the venue was still comfortable. We ordered the happy hour The pizzas, and they were delicioius. My halibut was prepared and served beautifully. It was a wonderful dining experience in a convivial atmosphere.4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMOne of the few restaurantsOne of the few restaurants in U.S. that knows how to make a bistecca alla fiorentina. Appetizers and salad were also very good. Nice choices for wine by the glass, and two top-notch martinis. We'll be back to try their appetite whetting wood-fired pizzas.4/16/2013 12:00:00 AMMy husband and I went to celebrateMy husband and I went to celebrate a special day. We had an amazing meal and wonderful service. We will be back and will recommend Nostrana to all our friends.4/15/2013 12:00:00 AMNostradamus is one of my favoriteNostradamus is one of my favorite restaurants. We always order the Nostrana salad. It was hard to choose among the pasta dishes, entrees and pizzas. There were four of us and it was easy to converse. There was a large party seated near us, where several tables had been put together. I also saw several families with small children. It seemed like the wait staff was very flexible with accommodating all sizes and types of groups.4/14/2013 12:00:00 AMPortland goodnessYum! We took our older kids here while visiting Portland from Seattle and had a wonderful meal. Crab pizza is not to be missed and the ridiculoulously huge steak my husband ordered was delicious. We will definitely return.4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMThe food here is always good. The food here is always good. Eaten here many times and never been disappointed. Would have gone more if they served breakfast. It is absurdly good.4/9/2013 12:00:00 AMItalian Gem in Nostrana PDXNostrana is truly a Portland essential. This is my 5th time dining. We got to share your wonderful neighborhood gem with a couple for their first time. After one gets hit with the inital amazing smells the event begins with the most wonderful bread and olive oil
Service was high level and right on. Needed help with picking an Italian red and our sever along with the educated wine and beverge manager found a gem for us.
Entrees came out right on time even with a full restaurant on a Sunday night.
Make sure your list of essential restaurants in Portland, Oregon include Nostrana.4/7/2013 12:00:00 AMDelicious food and great service.Delicious food and great service. Would go back if we were ever in Portland again.4/7/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent food and service,Excellent food and service, but make reservations or you'll be faced with a two to three hour wait. This place is just that good. They never rush you and just provide amazing service all the way around.4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMSeafood fettuccine with oystersSeafood fettuccine with oysters spinach and roe and outstanding. Halibut with fiddlehead ferns perfectly cooked. Apple crisp fragrant and tasty. Noise level so high we couldn't hear each other across the table; service sloppy.4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMAloof serverServer was aloof and surly. Perhaps just having a bad day. Food was superb.4/5/2013 12:00:00 AMIn my opinion, Nostrana isIn my opinion, Nostrana is the best restaurant in Portland. My wife and son agree. We have been dining there for several years, and they have never disappointed us. Because it is so popular, reservations are essential. And, because it is usually full with a waiting line, the noise level is a little more than I would prefer; but when a place is this popular, a higher noise level is easy to forgive. Our party of three all had fresh halibut that was cooked to perfection. With our dinner, we enjoyed a reasonably priced Chianti Classico. Although we don't normally have dessert, the dessert menu is just too tempting. We shared an especially delicious chocolate creation that came with ample whipped cream. Needless to say, we will be back.4/5/2013 12:00:00 AMNostrana was excellent, asNostrana was excellent, as always. Whatever you order, whoever your waitperson, always satisfying.4/4/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Portland DiningAfter 12 years of eating all over Portland, we finally tried Nostrana. It was amazing. I don't know why we never ate here before. The ricotta stuffed pork chop was great as was the tagliani pasta. Service was impeccable and even though there was a table of 14 next to us, we didn't feel like we were lost in their shadow service-wise. Great evening all the way around.4/2/2013 12:00:00 AMI go to the dentist nearbyI go to the dentist nearby so I have passed Nostrana on those occasions. Made a res on Open Table for a Friday night. Arrived on time and was seated promptly. Service was timely and efficient without hovering. Had the Funghi Verde pizza as an appetizer. Absolutely outstanding pizza from their wood-fired oven. Everyone enjoyed their entrees as well. The energy, noise level was energetic. About right for a Friday night but not so loud that it was hard to hold a conversation. All in all, a very nice experience and highly recommended.3/29/2013 12:00:00 AMOutstanding food and awesomeOutstanding food and awesome service! Ordering drinks, appetizers, salads, entrees and desserts from their wide variety of menu offerings never once created a challenge for this skilled team. Each arrival was well presented and delectable. My personal favorites were the roast chicken and apple crisp. The "rooster candle" for our birthday girl of 71 was a nice festive touch. We will return. Often.3/25/2013 12:00:00 AMAbsolutely the best ItalianAbsolutely the best Italian restaurant in Portland!3/24/2013 12:00:00 AMA regular favoriteThe menu changes regularly so there always surprises in store. The service was outstanding as always. The wine and cocktails were exceptional.
The pizza appeptizer was good but the pork entree and trout selection was somewhat bland.3/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
