Diner Reviews
  • "The highlight of our dining on a recent trip to Portland (where there's no shortage of very good restaurants) - everything was perfect, flavorful and fresh. Stands up to anything on either coast."

  • "Salad Mista was blah. Peach-Blueberry cobbler was way way too sweet. Pasta dishes were great."

  • "Really liked the décor here. Super high ceilings allowed for many diners to converse w/o the ambient noise of other places. Service was warm and attentive. Food quality excellent but mostly what I would describe as "blocking and tackling" on basics. We cabbed here from downtown but decided to walk back. If you can get comfortable with the fwy crossings it's a really nice way to burn off the dinner."

  • "We eat here twice a week and this last Friday was the worst food and service ever. There seems to be a lot of turn over in staff. Nobody seems to know what is going on. It took over and hour to get our lunch. Hello Cathy Whimms.... whats the story here? Take care of your loyal customers!"

  • "We'd only been to Nostrana for their late-night happy hour, which is awesome. We brought a guest here for dinner and I felt that some of the food was too expensive for the quality. The porchetta was quite amazing, but the chicken wasn't tender or that interesting. Their signature salad was even better than I'd remembered, but the soup was like an $11 nice vegetable stew. The butterscotch budino is still one of the highlights of eating here. I'd come here again for happy hour but I don't think I would for dinner."

  • "We went there to celebrate my husbands birthday. Honestly we are extreme foodies so maybe my expectations were too high. We only went there bc it was open on a Monday and we had been reccomended by a few friends. The service was awful. I asked the server if they did anythin for birthdays, he said they did a candle and dessert. Well he had it sent to the wrong table and didn't appologize. Honestly he was a Grouch the whole evening. If you don't feel happy, stay home. Do t ruin other peoples evenings. It took him probably 10 min to bring out change after paying and forgot to bring back our leftovers. Not to mention he seemed put off When I asked for more bread. I don't write reviews ever. But this one deserved my honesty."

  • "I do love the food...always innovative and delicious. But the snobby waiter totally ruined our otherwise good experience. I have too many excellent food choices in Ptown to risk a good meal ruined by a pretentious waiter. Won't be back for awhile."

  • "I was there on a Friday, which featured their blanco crab pizza........ no word needed aside from perfection."

  • "I can always depend on their outstanding pizza and last visit the Oregon Ahi was delicious tasting and artfully presented. Our waitress was cheerful and fun, taking good care of our group by bringing bread and olive oil right away. Nostrana is the real deal. One of my favorite things is to sit at the counter and watch pizzas being created and baked in the oven. The place has a good vibe and I can go alone and feel very comfortable."

  • "Nostrana is one of my favorite places to go for lunch. Great atmosphere, top service, and wonderful food. The pizzas are consistently terrific."

  • "If you love gnocchi like I do, then this is a must. On the Thursday night we went there were 5 different gnocchi dishes! We had 2 of them and they were both AMAZING!"

  • "Nostrana is consistently one of the Portland's best: excellent Neapolitan-style pizza and a range of choices, including several gluten-free options (the tuna & white-bean salad is one of our favorites, regardless of GF status). The menu shines and the bar and wine list are expansive, including several flights (even after-dinner wines) that offer variety at a reasonable price. We've never had anything less than a very good meal there. Every night has a theme, but the menu isn't contrived, and it's not gourmet - just fresh and really good. In summer, it's tough to beat a cocktail and/or bottle of dry lambrusco and a pizza on the deck. Consider someplace else if you're in a hurry: not due to the service, but this is best enjoyed at leisure."

  • "I have been to Nostrana more then 30 times. Sunday's dinner was exceptionally good and the ambiance was perfect. Sitting outside is a great way to spend a Portland Summer evening enjoying good food and good weather."

  • "We were seated immediately. Received our menus quickly. And the food we had was pretty good. But I find the servers so pretentious. I went once before, a few years ago and felt the same way then. So I didn't go back until now. Maybe servers are trained to be curt and impatient at Nostrana. Maybe they're too rushed or have delusions of grandeur. All in all, it was good, but APizzaScholls has better pizza and Caesar Salad - any day."

  • "La Nostrana has food befitting the best Italian eateries in Italy. And not just any particular region, this place has food that represents Italy from the northern Alps to the Southern islands. The meets are all well raised. And the fruits and vegetables are the freshest."

  • "From cocktails through dessert this was a wonderful meal! The squash blossoms and charcuterie plate were scrumptious. The cocktails, delicious. The main course was perfect, as was the wine. And dessert was decadently delightful! Glad we chose Nostrana."

  • "Nostrana continually and consistently delivers: superb cuisine, exquisitely executed, graciously served. We count it as Portland's best restaurant! That might be high praise, but is well deserved."

  • "We choose Nostrana as a frequent go to place. You have to plan for a reservation otherwise it will be a challenge to get a table for a group. The food, wine parings, special drink menu and service are all excellent. They just never disappoint!!"

  • "Food prices rather steep for small portions. Butter lettuce salad $14 for a very small plate Service excellent"

  • "Sorry experience. Pork chops were tough and wait staff said they had'nt had other complaints. We had three orders of pork hops and we're very disappointed. Hope to give them another chance. We'll see."

  • "Food flavors and quality were good. Service was adequate. Food concepts were tried and true, but sound. When looking at menu reminded us uncannily of a restraunt in the Twin Cities named Bar La Grassa. If only food flavor profiles were at the same level this would be a five star rating."

  • "From the tasty Italian bread to the delicious grilled trout, this place is Italian heaven. Very reasonably priced fare in a high-ceilinged bistro atmosphere. The butterscotch budino (pudding) dessert is wonderful."

  • "Great food, service, ambience...Nostrana has it all. My wife and I celebrated our 36th anniversary there and could not be more pleased. Highly recommend. Try the capellini with Manila clams..and my favorite goat cheese pappardelle."

  • "My husband and I were given a gift certificate and made a reservation for Friday the 13th. We ordered Salads first and they came promptly and were delicious. We both ordered different Pizza's. I ordered a "Primavera" with snap peas, spinach, green garlic, chili, crème fraîche, raschera cheese, lemon agrumato and my husband ordered a more traditional "Diavola" with spicy sausage, house mozzarella, provolone, tomato, Mama Lil’s peppers. Both were excellent. The waiter was great. I am sorry I don't remember his name. All the staff worked together very well."

  • "We have been to Nostrana before and it was really good. This time however the food was not good at all. The starters were bland and boring (soup for me, salad for my husband) and the mains were horrible. My husband had a pork chop that was undercooked and fatty and my seafood pasta was bland, cold. The prawns were so small you could barely see them and the clams tasted like they'd been frozen (there were all of about 4 also). We barely ate any of it, it was so bad and when we ordered a pizza after sending back almost full plates the waiter didn't even bother to ask why..... Go figure. We're hoping it's just a "one off" because we have really liked the food previously. Disappointing to say the least!! :("

  • "We've been meaning to go here for several years and finally made it! Everything tasted amazing, portions were generous, service was lightning speed quick, and prices were very fair for the high quality of food. One person in our party ordered a pizza and it was huge and so delicious! We will definitely go back, for the pizza and other menu items. I couldn't decide what to order, so need to go back to try other things! The strawberry rhubarb crisp was awesome for dessert. Four of us shared it, which was perfect after our big meals. "

  • "I wanted to celebrate my birthday at Nostrana because I always enjoy their menu and cuisine. I was not disappointed. I started with a rhubarb Negroni, which set the tone. My main course was a tagliatini with chopped razor clams in a lemon/garlic sauce and was outstanding. My husband enjoyed oysters, simple and tasty. I had a flight of local pinot noir wines that had a nice mix of flavors and styles. We finished with a butterscotch buddino, one of the best desserts in town. The salty melted caramel toppings sets off the butterscotch pudding perfectly. I couldn't have been happier."

  • "Nostrana is a solid, go to choice. It's innovative and at the same time familiar. Every single item on the menu is approachable by foodies and non-foodies. Money well spent."

  • "Without too much ado I should point out that I am an Italian food snob. But here I was impressed. I avoided pasta because Americans tend to over sauce their pasta... and went with the porchetta, which was done to perfection. There was a little too much peppery sauce on the dish - which was unfortunate (less is more when it comes to pepper sauces we still want to taste the pork). We had a delicious Sicilian chardonnay - a light, fruity wine with enough acidity to work well with the pork. The service was good, but not outstanding. The restaurant pleasant - but it would be nice to have linen cloth for dinner. "

  • "THe insalata Nostrana is a must! Nostrana's take on a Caesar. Very yummy. The charcuterie plate is the best in town. And the pizzas...perfect! Never disappointed at Nosttrana."

  • "Nostrana consistently has amazing salads and pizza, great service and wine list. We always have an all-around fantastic experience when we eat here. If you haven't been, then you definitely should. If you have, well then you know.:)"

  • "Focused menu allows a European style quality approach featuring well prepared & tasty dishes. Has great neighborhood ambience but still retains feel of a larger city restaurant too (if that's important to you). Dishes we ordered were superb.....but wish there was a little more because it was all so good! Service very attentive & professional but busy early Saturday evening visit means everything took longer wait time than anticipated. That's probably a sign of Nostrana's popularity.... & also reminds me why I stopped Saturday evening restaurant visits around Portland. A great Portland neighborhood restaurant choice you're bound to enjoy."

  • "The asparagus and porcini mushroom salad was divine, as was the turnip soup. Others enjoyed the salmon and the spot prawn bisque. It's quite noisy but not too loud for conversation."
