Diner Reviews
  • "This was my first visit to Northern Lakes since their move from Bloomfield Hills to the old Charlie's Crab location. I had heard mixed reviews and was apprehensive, but was delightfully pleased. We ended up sitting in a quiet secluded corner. Our server Cory was out of this world! The restaurant was able to accommodate the changes that I made to my meal and it was very good!! I will definitely be returning! Everything was good."

  • "I haven't been to Northern Lakes in years but wanted to try it out since it moved. I love the new location and the food was delicious. The service was great as well. We dined on a slow night and an off day but I think it is only a matter of time before that place gets busy every night."

  • "One out of three entrees was good and nothing else was the least bit commensurate with the cost. They are so afraid if the community codes that there is no Identification on the building. I drove by it twice trying to figure out what it was. I had to ask the valet if this is the place. No reason to return."

  • "We had a party of six. Everyone enjoyed their food, from apps to entrees and dessert. The service was outstanding. A perfect evening. Would definitely recommend!!"

  • "Great meal- fish was delicious! Salads were interesting and tasty-- service was a bit slow but I think there were some large tables that needed extra attention when we were there. Great to see this Bloomfield Hills place reinvented!!"

  • "We were a bit concerned when this restaurant moved locations, but they have brought their excellent food and service to a wonderful space with historic details from one of Detroit's former grand mansions. Thanks for another great dinner!"

  • "Yes, food outstanding. Service GREAT. Steven was fun, attentive yet professional. This is the first time at the new location and I really do miss the "upscale" affect from the Bloomfield location. When I walked in I felt I was in the league of a "Red Lobster". Not anxious to return. If it ever changes decor or upscales its venue, then I will take another stab at dining there. In the meantime, I guess I will have to utilize one of the other Unique Dining Locations."

  • "Too long between courses. Plates and food arrived not as warm as appropriate. Disappointing special birthday dinner. Oysters on the shell very good."

  • "First time in their new location. They kept most of the basics from the old Charley's. New carpeting and chairs. We both had the lobster special which was not only a great deal, but very tasty. Our server, Todd, was very attentive and helpful."

  • "First time visit - food was delicious and Dawn, our waitress, was excellent. When out of her way to make sure we had a great experience. Will come back soon."

  • "We had a very nice time at this new location of Northern Lakes. Delicious food, fresh and plentiful, and I thoroughly enjoyed my dirty vodka martini! Wine list is very good, also. server was helpful, attentive, polite, very pleasant. We will be back!"

  • "Dined a few nights ago after calling beforehand requesting a vegan friendly meal. I was not disappointed in the least as Executive Chef Mike and Chef Josh prepared a superb meal, ably served by Jeremy. The lentil "volcano" with mushroom foam, surrounded by the mushroom vegetable Forrest was as delightful to consume as it was to hear about. While the main course was most creative and delicious, the rest of the meal, including the wine, were all winners too. It is still difficult to find restaurants that are accommodating to vegan diets but Northern Lakes is, thankfully, most happy to accommodate us with advance notice. Our thanks, in particular, to Restaurant Manager Leta for making our experience such a positive one."

  • "Food consistently good but it takes a long time to get it. Same slow service as at prior location. I wish they would get it right as the seafood selection always has great variety. Mgr promised better next time if we told we wanted out quickly but they've been unable to deliver on that same promise before. A really good selection if you intend to spend an evening at dinner."

  • "we had a nice dinner. the crab was good. the server was personable and pleasant but missing a lot. the man that refilled the water did it constantly to our annoyance. that isn't good service but I think they think it is. it was ok rather pricey for the food they serve. definitely not a place for a discriminating palate."

  • "One dinner had to be returned because the seasonings were not right. The manager, waitstaff, and chef all agreed with the guest. The chef prepared a new entrée which was delicious. Everyone was most helpful and concerned and the guest was pleased with the outcome. We definitely will return again."

  • "The service and ambiance were excellent! We had an early reservation, so it was very quiet. Only negative I would mention is that the broiled lobster was over cooked and it made the meat tough and hard to cut and chew. That may have been my mistake by not going with the steamed lobster, but still seems the broiled version should have been better. Overall, a great night out that I would recommend to friends!"

  • "This was our second visit to Northern Lakes, but the first to the new location, which was the Northfield Charlies Crab. Restaurant is huge so should be a great location for large groups. We went for the Lobster special which was as GREAT value. Lobster was perfectly prepared and Diane, our server, was outstanding. Highly recommend!"

  • "First time diners here, after my mother-in-law requested lobster for her birthday. Pleasant dark-toned ambiance with nautical decor. We asked for and received a quiet table in a corner. Team service was attentive on a Saturday evening. Lobster was perfectly broiled, with nice touches, such as clarified butter poured into heated bowls at the table, and fresh lemon with cloth napkins for hand-cleaning at the end. Sides were phoned in: an unseasoned steamed vegetable medley and spiced rice with likely food-service origins. Well above-average wine list at slightly above-average pricing and an emphasis on many of Michigan's better whites -- excellent choices with the menu's fish and seafood emphasis."

  • "the food, the waitress, everything couldn't have been better. the food was served very hot & everything tasted great. the waitress kept coming back to our table, checking on us. too bad they didn't move to the Farmington-west bloomfield area instead of troy."

  • "In Detroit for business and found this gem. The owner and staff were very welcoming and the server, excellent. The interior is a magnificent, wood-paneled room with a fireplace. Reminded me of someone's beautifully appointed library, yet also evoked the soaring interior of a tall sailing ship. I started with a trio of oysters. All three were extremely fresh and one, from Washington state, was a stand-out. The bread basket included homemade Parmesan dill rolls: delicious! The sauteed snapper with cider beurre blanc had incredibly crisp skin and the accompanying rice pilaf was unusually but pleasantly spiced. Upon the server's recommendation, I tried a Michigan Riesling and was not disappointed. It was just right with the seafood."

  • "Having East Coast roots the four of us were looking forward to the restaurant's Seafood Invasion. Instead we experienced a $200+ disappointment. From the outside it appeared that the kitchen and servers were not prepared for the number of diners who responded to the Seafood Invasion. Service was slow at best and fragmented. After a long wait (how long does it take to cook a "lobsta"?) we were served our dinner by a different group of servers. Meanwhile our server was more concerned with selling bottles of wine to the table next to us while we waited a good 5 minutes for the proper utensils to crack open the lobsters. During that time the lukewarm meal got colder. The ambiance was good but so is the competition's! Going Down With The Ship!"

  • "I always loved the old Charley's Crab interior. The former owners made the stately interior by taking the old interior of a mansion in Grosse Pointe. So, you will enjoy fabulous food with a feel like you are eating in grandeur. Our waiter was a delight!"

  • "We had early dinner reservations at 6pm on a Sunday, and the place was empty. Dark, dreary, depressing inside made the meal less exciting. All food comes with the same rice and veggies....nothing creative here. Prices are on the expensive side too especially compared to other seafood places. Waiter was good but the rest of the meal was a big disappointment. Won't be traveling this far again for such an uninspiring meal/place."

  • "Food quality was great - both had spinach salads, Chilean sea bass, mixed veggies and salt encrusted baked potato; creme brulee for dessert. Also, they did a great job with my wife's gluten-free requirements - clearly marked and accommodating menu & knowledgeable server. However, the service was slow and they brought out the incorrect sides with our meals (although server checked tickets and they were correct). The waitstaff was generally responsive and did not seem understaffed, but the "pacing" of the meal was off which made the overall service seem slow. Salads came out quickly, then we waited a very long time for meals. Coffee after dinner came out quickly, which we were half done with before dessert came out."

  • "Staff was very nice, especially waitress--Angel. Service from kitchen was terrible. This is the second time and we will not return. We were at dinner for 3 and half hours. The dining room was not filled. The maitre d' said everyone came at the same time.....then don't schedule. it was a snowy night; there must have been cancellations......Very sad. We were grateful to be in a quiet area for the 8 of us, but we were very upset with the slowness of the arrival of each course."

  • "We started off with the Spinach Salad w/Marcona Almonds - delicious. I had the chilean sea bass - it was cooked to perfection. They have a special mardi gras food and beverage menu along with beads. Enjoy!!!"

  • "We always enjoyed having Northern Lakes in our backyard in Bloomfield Hills and were disappointed to see it move to Troy. However, they took over the previous space from Charlie's Crab and the new location is a perfect match for the restaurant's excellent food and service. The space is gorgeous with a room literally taken from one of Detroit's Golden Age mansions. The food and service were both great and I was happy to still find the elderflower martini to be available. Best wishes for success in the new location!"

  • "Web menu included both perch and whitefish - neither was available so went with filet. Big mistake. I have had tastier, tenderer beef at Outback. If I ever go back it will be for seafood or nothing."

  • "Our group was seated upstairs and aside from extremely dim lighting (people had to use their cell phone light to read the menu) the atmosphere was very comfortable. Our server was very friendly and attentive. The sommelier came to our table right when we were seated, but when asked to return in approx 5-10 min. she never did. After a brief Q&A with our server he recommended a spot on wine that our whole group loved. Next came one of the best shrimp cocktail I ever had! The shrimp were big on size and fresh on flavor. Next came a velvety lobster bisque.....beautiful. Lastly our fish entrees were excellent. I had the Sea Bass, my husband had the Swordfish. The potatoes served with the entrees were unremarkable. Overall 4 out of 5."

  • "We enjoyed the friendly service and relaxed ambiance of the restaurant,it felt like you were in someone's spacious dining room. We each enjoyed two different styles of salmon dishes and the unique take on the coleslaw was excellent."

  • "I dined there on Valentine's day and while our food was good, it was not a "wow" or something that, given the price, I would highly recommend to a friend. While nothing was bad, nothing was very good, except for the service, which was professional and friendly. The tables were too big and I felt I was seated too far away from my valentine."

  • "Thoroughly enjoyed a dinner for two in an intimate setting that was comfortable and fit the occasion to a T. As a fish lover GNS did a splendid job with Pacific Grouper and Halibut. The crab cake app was delectable And perfect for two to share. The Michigan Slaw was unlike any salad dish we've ever had and so good . Did I mention our cocktails were prepared well and generous? In all a very nice evening with my special someone."

  • "Northern Lakes Seafood was terrific! What used to be Charlie's Crab has now turned into one of Troy's fine dining experiences. You start with free valet parking, move into the lobby where the host/hostess offers you free coat check before being escorted to your booth or table. The servers are prompt and attentive without being overbearing. We visited on Valentine's Day which we expected to be very noisy and crowded. We were escorted to a semi private room that was sumptuously decorated in brown and blue. My shrimp cocktail contained three shrimp as big as my hand and my meal of crab stuffed lobster were both delectable. My husband - not a seafood lover had the strip steak that was just marvelous. We will be back!"

  • "This was the first time we ate at Northern Lakes Seafood Company, but it sure will not be our last. The service was awesome. Our waiter was attentive, funny and offered us great suggestions. The food was terrific. A piece of advice, save room for dessert. The chocolate hazelnut torte was.....there are no words to describe it. Maybe words like marvelous, extraordinary, fantastic, and phenomenal, just save room. We will definitely be returning."
