Diner Reviews
  • "A group of girl friends celebrated their 70th birthdays at the North Pond restaurant. The staff was attentive and even provided complimentary glasses of champagne and extra desserts. The food and presentation was superb. Our only complaint is that Open Table should relate that tables near the window, facing the Pond, are first come first served."

  • "North Pond provided the consummate evening. Everyone was exceptionally gracious, the food was beyond fabulous, the setting was incomparably romantic, and every moment was memorable. I could not possibly imagine a more perfect restaurant experience. The service was flawless. The most succelent softshell crab ever. I could scour the world for years in hopes of finding a similar experience, and yet here is North Pond, right in my very own back yard. What a discovery! As Chaucer wrote, "the lyf so short, the craft so long to lerne"-- but you have learned the craft! Still wondering if it really happened, or if it was just a dream. Yes, it really was that wonderful. Thank you."

  • "I've been here twice for their Sunday Brunch. The service, food, interior, and setting looking out at North Pond, are all fantastic!"

  • "Great atmosphere, excellent food and an array of different gins that you don't see in many places with the concentrations now being on bourbons. Thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience. Pricey but the food, presentation, atmosphere and location were well worth making North Pond an event place."

  • "If FLW had been a chef rather than an architect he would have worked here. The restaurant is beautiful and spacious but romantic and intimate at the same time as all good prairie style spaces should be. The food is amazing, just what you would expect from a fine dining restaurant in Chicago. What is unexpected is the portion sizes, they are ample and you will want to eat everything on your plate. The service is also outstanding without being pompous and over the top. A wonderful experience."

  • "Got engaged here 11 years ago and returned the first couple anniversaries - just returned to celebrate for our 10th and the food is just as, if not, better! So consistent and fresh and love how they use local fare. I'm not even sure how they pair up certain ingredients that I would never dream of in a million years, but it works incredibly well. The chef is a food scientist! Plus, for certain special occasions, they take the time to personalize your menu! (Ours had our names and happy anniversary). What a special touch that made the evening & experience that much more special."

  • "Great food uniquely prepared..inattentive staff who was slow to respond 30 minutes for a cup of coffee and there were empty tables. Table was so cramp that my chair hit the back of another, my wife had to sit and an angle. Very uncomfortable."

  • " I celebrated my birthday last night and it was a magical experience. When we arrived, fog had settled over the pond and the view from our table in the bar overlooking the pond was very atmospheric, with fog masking the buildings across the park. Our dinner was delicious, halibut for me and lamb for my husband-both tasty and just the right size portions after our shared appetizer. Kudos for our waitperson Caroline. She always appeared at our table at just the right time and we enjoyed talking with her at meal's end. Service was well-paced. We enjoyed not being rushed at our late evening seating. Caroline treated me to a coconut dessert for my birthday. I appreciated the personalized menu as a momento for the memorable night!!"

  • "Immediately disappointed by location of our table for four. First time sitting in back by kitchen. VERY dark and our view was the kitchen as opposed to lovely pond and lincoln park. Ordered a glass of Prosecco and they didn't have it. I ordered something from each course offered and wasn't blown away by any. There wasn't one offering on the dessert menu that I even wanted. Our friends thought the same thing. No Coconut milk please. Blah"

  • "Lovely dinner to celebrate our daughter's graduation from the University of Chicago. Food and service outstanding. While we could not be seated on the patio, which would have been optimal, the dinner was none the less memorable. Use and treatment of exquisite ingredients was creative and delicious and beautifully explained by the waitstaff. And the personalized menu, WOW, what a lovely gesture! - Thank you!!!"

  • "This restaurant was the perfect destination for entertaining European friends. The setting, especially on a misty evening was pastoral yet captured the Chicago skyline. We were seated in the inner dining area where we could watch the chefs at work. Those seated in the outer area had views of the park and lagoon. It is a little dark for reading menus with aging eyes. Our meals were delicious and I was particularly please with the flavors and textures accompanying my striped bass. The wine list offered many choices, and we drank a lovely crisp Austrian wine. The North Pond is a terrific place to celebrate a special occasion, and I look forward to returning."

  • "I had requested a special table for a special occassion when I made the reservation 2 months in advance so when we arrived and were placed in the corner of the back room with several other couples on a long table, I was extremely disappointed. The woman who seated us said "we serve first come first served, we don't take requests." So much for that. Just before our salads arrived, another woman who was at the desk noticed that several tables were open in the front room (where I had wanted to sit) and she came over and asked if we'd like to be moved. Things brightened after that and we had a delicious meal."

  • "We have dined at North Pond on multiple occasions. All have been wonderful but last Sunday was an exception. We felt that the service was very slow. We sat at our table upon arrival for, it seemed like, a long time before being greeted by the wait staff. I think we've been given a small first course (amuse) before at brunch. That didn't occur on Sunday and we could have used it due to the wait for service. I'm sorry that our experience didn't live up to other meals we've had at North Pond. We'll come again though and hope for a more "normal" dining experience."

  • "We thought a reservation would guarantee a nice table outside for our celebration.A warm evening proved otherwise.A beautiful setting, though lack of parking was inconvenient and made for a long walk in heels! We were put inside which was pretty but disaponting. We were moved outside after the 1st course. Hard to believe the food is award-winning. Strange combinations that didn 't seem to pair well. Very small portions of unidentifiable food, which was not hot and fish seemed underdone. The kitchen was slow though dining room not full. Service a bit slow. We were there for 28 min before we got our drinks. Another 25 min wait for bread.Waitress offered no help w/strange menu. Will Not return or recommend. Very expensive for the experience."

  • "When it first opened it was a moderate and quaint place. Long time since it has been discovered by the Inn Crowd and so they reduced comfortable down to many small table so it is crowded with too many special occasion parties, mostly because it has undeserved notice. The 13 dollars house salad had all of three pieces of lettuce, the salmon at 38 dollars was small and under-cocked. Add 2 glasses of 16 wine and the bill was $200 for two people, that includes the $30 tip that was not really deserved. We would NEVER go back there. They should restore it back to the Park Shelter House that it was originally.. at least that had full-size wash rooms."

  • "Locally sourced products presented artfully and expensively in moderate portions. Imaginative combinations of flavors pique the jaded palate. My husband's favorite for special occasions. Lovely view of the pond adds exceptional ambience, with bird life an added attraction."

  • "The food at North Pond is truly special. Every course and meal were fabulous. The chef puts flavors and textures together in a way that is both unusual and wonderful. The service absolutely could not have been beter. And it's so lovely there, inside the restaurant and outside. This isi a special place to go...we all loved it and highly recommend it."

  • "We went to North Pond for my son's PhD graduation from the U of C. We wanted a memorable dinner, and we certainly had one. We took the tasting menu, and it really did give NP a chance to show their stuff. Since it changes often, I'll just note the mushroom ragout with asparagus was fantastic, as was the Poussin cooked in hay. And the Carrot cake with chevre. The food was top notch -maybe not the best we've had in Chicago, but really, really good (best: Senza and the late Charlie Trotter's). Wine pairings were good, but maybe not exceptional matches. Service was perfection, including menus congratulating my son on his graduation. It was a special evening, and we'll always remember, happily, North Pond. Very highly recommended."

  • "This is my third time and this restaurant does not disappoint. The food is unbelievable, and I am from New Orleans so that says a lot. The design of the restaurant is like being back in the 1920s with the Roycroft arts and craft movement and is just beautiful. I took both friends and clients this time and everyone enjoyed the service and food. Great staff, great place. Put it on your list."

  • "We came to North Pond for brunch, for two birthday celebrations. One of our guests is vegetarian, and although the staff was very nice re: her request to have the brunch choices made w/o meat (I had called in advance to make the staff aware of this as well), it looked as if the kitchen merely added more potatoes to her now meatless plate, which disappointed me. Otherwise, the food was quite delicious & beautifully presented. The restaurant is lovely, with a gorgeous view of the Lincoln Park lagoon, staff is terrific, & parking was a breeze (using the valet service). Overall, it was a wonderful experience & we would happily come again!"

  • "I hope this was an off night for North Pond. Extremely slow service (seating at 8:15, 30 minutes between waiter contacts, didn't leave until after 11:00). My meal (foie gras, salad, lamb) was good but not exceptional and my wife's meal (sturgeon, salad, bass) had dry and flavorless sturgeon and bass (they substituted red snapper) that was almost too salty to eat. I know that famous restaurants need to be creative but it seems like you overdid it and the kitchen was running extremely slow for us and everyone around us. Our 20-something waiter was both condescending and obsequious, so a bit of discipline is needed to reel him in from insulting patrons who have been dining out longer than he has been alive."

  • "We came for our anniversary and couldn't have been happier. Our server took his time answering every question. We never felt rushed but our dishes never overlapped. Despite being very busy when we arrived, service didn't seem slow. The food was complex and richly flavored, even though it was also light and fresh. The sauce on my salmon was heavenly and the mushroom and beef dish my husband ate had so many different combinations of flavors it was surprising. My only regret was that we didn't have the ability to try all the dishes. And by the time we get back they'll have changed to match other seasonal flavors. "

  • "Food was very interesting but the restaurant expects you to eat either before or after you dine there. Order lamb chops and was served one chop the size of a quarter. It tasted it very good, but my wife and I went for a snack after we left the restaurant."

  • "We went to celebrate our dearest friends Silver Aniversary. The whole experience felt very special - from personalized menu to wonderful food and exceptional attention. Every time we come to the restaurant almost all the items on the menu are different but never disappoint. The taste, presentation, complexity of texture and flavor - all superb. One of our favorite city places. "

  • "There should be more places like North Pond. The setting is idyllic and on the beaten. ( running and walking ) path through Lincoln Park. Beautiful views out and the place has warm woods and Prairie Style architecture in. Friendly, competent staff. Smaller but varied menu with more than enough choice. Well executed and flavorful preparations with very pleasing presentation. The experience, overall, is sublime. Just make sure you go with someone with whom you'd like to share such an experience. I'll return..... A gem in the Park!"

  • "We cannot stop raving about the wonderful service and food we had at our recent Sunday brunch at North Pond. The three courses were beautifully presented and the mix of flavors was superb. We gave our compliments to the chef through our attentive and pleasant wait staff. We asked about the history of the restaurant and received a delightful summary in words--and in writing. The price was quite reasonable for all we received. If I lived in Chicago, I'd be a regular here!"

  • "We were here for brunch before. We took friends for dinner to celebrate a special birthday. Food was overpriced for portions and I did not care for any of desserts we tried. Lamb was fatty. They charged for 2 pots of coffee instead of per cup which came out to more money. I felt price gouged and did not feel it was worth the money. I will not go back."

  • "Too bad you cannot reserve a table in the room with the wonderful view. In the room looking out on the pond, you are dining on exquisite dishes in a little piece of heaven. However, if you are seated in the interior room, removed from North Pond, you could be anywhere. There ought to be a way to know in advance where you will be seated so you don't make the effort if you will be relegated to the dark room. The food is wonderful, but cut off from the beauty of the environment, I would pass on this one. "

  • "Booked a table three weeks in advance for 4 and requested a table with view of pond. Seated instead at table 5 feet from a noisy open kitchen and next to a wait service station. The kitchen staff communication was loud and very annoying. Within the first 5 minutes of being seated we were assigned three different waiters. A request for a different table away from the open kitchen was honored but the best that could be done was a table next to the entry and greeting host station. New waiter assigned. Friendly but not available and timing was off with lots of wait time. We had to call for the check. Overall the whole environment was frantic. Food was good and presentation very nice but could not make up for the uneven service. Avoid."
