While the food was great, the service declined very quickly. There was an issue with the credit card machine so it took 35 minutes to finally get our receipts. When we finally did get our receipts, we noticed that the server had hand-written in a 20% tip for himself. This is EXTREMELY unprofessional. As a San Francisco local, I will not be recommending this restaurant to anyone who lives here or comes to visit looking for a recommendation because of this stunt by our server.

I was very disappointed with the restaurant. I had eaten here a couple of years ago and found the food quite good. This time, we were assigned a table in the lower floor, with no ambiance, and with a couple of other tables who had birthday parties. Although the waiter and service were good, the food was not. Our house made raviolis were awful, the osso-bucco was not great, and everything else was just mediocre. We had wanted to have a nice Italian meal with no frills and house specialties. I'm afraid we won't be going back there again.

I don't know for sure what I expected but this was above and beyond. The waiters were purely authentic and very kind. We couldn't pronounce anything on the menu but were treated with patience and honor. Worth ever penny. could not have been more comfortable. And the food was amazing. Real flavor not just salt.

We were seated in the "wine cellar", a small room downstairs with the same excellent food and service as the main dining room upstairs. What we found (in the wine cellar) was a larger proportion of families with children and clients who were dressed inappropriately for a restaurant of this caliber. This obviously affected that ambience and overall dining experience. Afterwards, I questioned the maitre d' about their seating practices and he vehemently denied that less visibly attractive clients are seated downstairs - rather all he tries to do is to spread the guests out between locations so that there is a reasonable amount of activity in each place - and that the next time we dine with them, simply request to be seated upstairs.

Although the food was good and the ambiance was nice (in the wine cellar), we were sorely disappointed with the waiter. Not only did he push a specific wine and appetizers (more than once), but he disappeared at the end of the meal for 15 minutes. We ended up asking the head-waiter for the basement to find him for us . When our bill arrived, it had a tip of $40 (20.3 %) already hand-written in & totaled for us. Note that we were a party of 4. At the bottom of the check, it says "The tip is not included in the total", but someone (the waiter?) had crossed out the "not" on our check. We crossed out the tip amount that was written in and changed it (and the total); our credit card was charged the correct revised amount.

We had not been to North Beach Resturant for quite a few years. So many fine Italian Resturants in SF, but North Beach is a Jem! We went there on our 45th Anniversary and had a great time. It can be pricey if you get a special bottle of wine. We had a wonderful bottle of wine that was from the Owner's vinyard for $90 for our special occasion, but there were bottle in the $30 range. We also had the Antipasto plate for $34 but well worth the price. Main courses were delightful. I asked for a glass of Grapa at the end of the meal and it was given to me gratis along with a large piece of Tira Misu to share with my wife. We make a trip to SF about 3 times a year and plan to return on our next visit.

I ate there once. Food was OK, but nothing special. Decor was nice, but also nothing special. Service was nice but we had to wait 40 min after our reservation on a busy Saturday night. The restaurant does not have enough pizazz to call me back to it.

Used to be a great place. Although the ambiance and food is still fine, it is overpriced. Corkage of $30 is absurd given the highly inflated prices of the wines on their wine list.

From the time we entered the door, this was a positive dining experience. The staff was attentive and helpful, and the owner greeted us as if we were old friends. The wine list was extensive and the waiter was helpful with recommendations. The lamb chop "lollipops" were finished on the grill and were succulent. My partner's seafood risotto was filled with calamari, lobster, clams, and scallops and she enjoyed every bite. The tiramisu we shared was also spot-on, and our after dinner coffee was a perfect way to finish an outstanding dinner. As we left, the owner remembered our name and we promised to return. We will!

I've been coming to this restaurant for years and, despite that, I will not be returning. After trying to seat us at the worst tables in the restaurant (near the front door and then next to the noisy kitchen), the restaurant then served us food that was mediocre at best. To top off the night, the restaurant sought to charge us $9.50 for a double cappuccino (i.e., as if we were ordering two cappuccinos) and $12 for some strawberries (I ordered the Cold Zabaglione - Della Casa (custard with strawberries), which is $12 on the menu, but told them I only wanted the strawberries). In my book, the restaurant was being very small-minded. Regrettably, the restaurant will now lose my personal and business-oriented patronage.

The restaurant was very nice and a great wine list. My entree was not . The shrimp and pasta should be taken off the menu. The shrimp are tiny and not even fresh. My dining companion had the veal and it was excellent. The wine was outstanding as well as the cheesecake for desert. I was just so disappointed about my main dish.

Had a great dinner. Ate in the lower room which was quiet with brick walls, low light and candles. Ordered the prosciutto) with melon and tomatoes as suggested by our server. It was the perfect starter. Then had Linguini with Clams. They will serve their pasta with any kind of sauce you request. I asked for a spicy red, which they had no issue with. The clams were fresh and delicious and the sauce was also excellent. The service was very attentive. The server was friendly and helpful. They have an excellent wine list. We went with a good Chianti (one of world's great under rated wines and usually one of the least expensive on any wine list). All in all a top notch dining experience. We thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

This large North Beach restaurant is attractive, spacious, and has good service. The problem is that none of us in our dinner group had anything to eat there that was at all special. For over 40 years, North Beach Restaurant has remained among my very favorite San Francisco restaurants. Some of the same staff has been there the whole time. It is a classy, Old World, Northern Italian restaurant. I recommend it for business meetings, because you can hear each other talk and I recommend it for romantic special events. I also recommend it for people who love great Italian food. They have the best vel chop this side of Rome.

Escargot the best I've had in a very long time, just the right balance of garlic, wine and butter. And served in the shells. You don't get that too often. Perfect finish - gelato affogato. This is now the bench for all future affogatos. I plan to come back to check out the lunch menu next.

Enjoyed having lunch at a truly old school Italian restaurant with servers in black suit and maitre d's calling you by name. Food is prepared "as you like it". They seem to push their house cured prosciutto and melon with burratta and tomato... along with their Sonoma Brunello wine ($20 a glass) which is steep. Overall our lunch was delicious.
