When we go to SF, we like to eat at North Beach Restaurant (and have for many years). We've never had a bad meal, a corked bottle of wine, or a surly server. It's a very steady and excellent restaurant in a city with a ton of competition.

Olt time northern Italian restaurant which has been in existence since 1916 in North Beach SF and in its current location since mid 70's. A must go if you are in the neighborhood, or even not. Just go. Old fashioned service from old fashioned waiters. Wonderful food and service.

My wife and I stopped here for lunch on out way to SFO after a few days in wine country. We were warmly greeted by Mel and he ensured a perfect meal. We are very accustomed to the finest Italian food in NYC and I very comfortable saying the meal at Northbeach rivals if not beats some of the best I have ever had. This place is a gem and a must try. The cave aged prosciutto is simply amazing. The veal saltim boca and pasta Della casa were beyond perfect. I cannot say enough wonderful things about our meal and experience. Thanks Mel and The Petroni family!

I have been to the North Beach restaurant on many occasions. My organization the Carpenters Union enjoys holding little gathering here for our executive officers. I enjoy conducting business here because the staff is impeccable and the food is superb! Cannot get enough of the North Beach restaurant and I cannot praise the staff enough. Total win with the food and staff it just doesn't get any better. I know a lot of the elected officials enjoy our brief encounters here.

Every time I go to this place I come out feeling like a million bucks. The food and Service are par exsalonce. I took my wife and our 10 year old daughter there for my wife's 50th b-day (along with a stay in Union Square at the St. Frances). It's kid friendly for children who are accustomed to fine dinning. It's not cheap and nor should it be, but I have spent more at restaurants for far less. It is located in Little Italy in North Beach, where you can stroll Columbus ave and check out the night's festivities. And of course they have Valet parking too which is a necessity. Always on my first choice list.

My husband and I took my mom here when she came into town. The server ignored us for about 15 minutes so my husband went to the bar to at least get us some water. The waiter then mentioned that they don't bring water to the table because of the draught implying that we were wasteful wanting water on one of the hottest evenings ever in SF! They were totally unhelpful when we asked for advice on italian wines. They brought a CA chardoney to taste instead - not at all what we were hoping for. We were then ignored for another 15 minutes which was very annoying given the menu includes little description of most dishes and we had a lot of questions. The food was fine, but nothing special! We will never go back!!

I was really looking forward to eating here and had high expectations. I had one of the veal specials of the day and it was merely OK. It was prepared with asparagus and mozzarella cheese on top of sections of veal. The cheese way overpowered the veal, I scraped it off and are the veal which was really bland and a chewer than typical. Maybe I was there on an off night.

North Beach is an icon in San Fransisco and I expected a wonderfull dinner. My waiter was a wonderful guy - really enjoyed talking to him, however the bread was dry - almost stale, and the eggplant parmesan was watery, and so boiling hot I could not eat it for 10 minutes. Wonder what happenned....

Poor presentation. "Cioppino alla Pescatora - Shelled - Our Seafood Specialty" had 2 overcooked shrimp, 1 muscle, 1 clam and the rest were chunks of dry white fish. Seems their goal is to turn tables not turn out good food. Extremely crowded and noisy. Couldn't wait too leave.

North Beach Restaurant was a major disappointment. The food was terrible, the decor depressing, and the menu is radically overpriced. The location and name clearly exempts them from having to offer a decent dining experience. The hosts and waiter were thoughtful and responsive, but beyond the service, there is nothing to recommend about North Beach Restaurant.

We were SO disappointed! First, we were seated in the lower level, which was decorated like my family's basement in the 70s. Not a fine dining ambiance! Second, the waiter seemed too eager to refill our wine glasses. He was more interested in selling a second bottle than ensuring we enjoyed our meal. Third, the food was truly average to poor. My supposedly fresh halibut was so dry and tough that I barely ate any. The waiter made no comment when he cleared my plate. I didn't say anything at the time as we were celebrating with friends. The other main dishes were acceptable but nothing special. With all of the wonderful restaurants in the area, this was truly surprising and very disappointing.

Returned to Northbeach after 5 years. The restaurant delivers in terms of food, ambience, selection and service. The only thing I found frustratiing was the constant "upselling" from our waiter, who worked diligently to push overpriced wines and appetizers that more than doubled our bill. Once the orders were taken, our waiter's attentitveness wained often forcing the table to solicit service. Loved the overall experience, though I left with a bit of "buyers remorse," feeling I had been led to spend far more than needed.
