North Beach RestaurantThe WaiterI appreciate the fact that they want to have an authentic Italian waiter to create the tone of the restaurant, but he was really difficult to understand. When the menu has a sparse description of the entrées etc and the waiter speaks broken English it is difficult to chose which entrée or appetizer is good. We had an incredibly tasty dinner - veal that melted in our mouth. Nice variety of appetizers for any tastebud. Our maitre 'd, host and server were so gracious, amicable and attentive - and they sang Happy Birthday to my sister with a candle in a piece of tiramisu. Can't say enough good about them. No snobbiness, just plain NICE. I'll use this as my special occasion place from now on. Some Italian friends of ours, who are big into the Italian dining scene, strongly recommended this restaurant and we were not disappointed. Each dish was elegantly prepared and they all tasted great with lots of "that looks great, let me try a bite of that!". We will definitely come here again when we visit San Francisco. Each time we eat here we feel like long lost friends returning. The wait staff are so helpful and knowledgeable. I am sure most of them have been there for years. We had the best bottle of wine we have ever tasted and discovered that it is from the proprieters own vineyard! The food is amazing! We have never had a bad meal here. It is worth the travel from Kansas City just to eat here!!! I can't say enough wonderful things about this restaurant. We ask for Mel and he always treats me and my family like we are the most important people he has seen all day.
We sat downstairs in the wine cellar on Saturday Night and loved the atmosphere. We had such a great experience with the Petroni Brunello (Mel's suggestion) that we went wine tasting at the vineyard in Sonoma two days later!
