Diner Reviews
  • "This is a great place for good food and reat service! Nice for groups or dates! You can actually hear the other person without yelling. The food and wine list are to die for! I vist very often and have never had a bad experience!"

  • "What do you expect with last minute reservations? Food unensoiring - waiter faking an accent - order room service instead"

  • "Had a great dinner. Ate in the lower room which was quiet with brick walls, low light and candles. Ordered the prosciutto) with melon and tomatoes as suggested by our server. It was the perfect starter. Then had Linguini with Clams. They will serve their pasta with any kind of sauce you request. I asked for a spicy red, which they had no issue with. The clams were fresh and delicious and the sauce was also excellent. The service was very attentive. The server was friendly and helpful. They have an excellent wine list. We went with a good Chianti (one of world's great under rated wines and usually one of the least expensive on any wine list). All in all a top notch dining experience. We thoroughly enjoyed the evening."

  • "Just as we were placing our order the power went out in that whole area of SF. You would have thought that nothing out of the ordinary happened in the restaurant except for the cheer from the diners when the lights came back on about 45 minutes later. Service never slowed, our orders arrived on time and were fabulous as always. I don't know how they did it. Our favorite in San Francisco. They won't let you down."

  • "North Beach Restaurant is a wonderful classic Italian restaurant. The servers were attentive and very accomodating. The Tagliatelle Bologese was out of this world. Our party sampled a number of dishes and all were crowd pleasers."

  • "This large North Beach restaurant is attractive, spacious, and has good service. The problem is that none of us in our dinner group had anything to eat there that was at all special. The food was not atrocious. It's just that I was struck by the fact that of the nine items we ordered, none were particularly good."

  • "We had heard good things about the restaurant, but what we experienced was very rushed service and lack of attention. There are many good restaurants in SF. Why settle for this one?"

  • "Excellent service, wonderful food, very inclusive and worldly wine list."

  • "I live in the San Joaquin valley and have dined here before, friends flew in from out of town we saw the Beach Blanket Babylon which is always a great show, then it is just and easy stroll down to the restaurant as always our overall dining experience was fantastic! My out of town friends talked about it for days after there return trip back East."

  • "We stopped here after an aggravating day sightseeing. We were so welcomed. I had the ravioli and it was delicious. My companion had the veal which she was very happy with. As a North Jersey resident, I know good Italian food and this was first rate northern Italian fare. Our waiter Manuel was delightful. Great stop. Great cultural experience in North Beach."

  • "For over 40 years, North Beach Restaurant has remained among my very favorite San Francisco restaurants. Some of the same staff has been there the whole time. It is a classy, Old World, Northern Italian restaurant. I recommend it for business meetings, because you can hear each other talk and I recommend it for romantic special events. I also recommend it for people who love great Italian food. They have the best vel chop this side of Rome."

  • "This was our first visit to North Beach Restaurant and I don't know why we haven't been here before. We will most definitely be back. Veal and salmon, delicious. Escargot the best I've had in a very long time, just the right balance of garlic, wine and butter. And served in the shells. You don't get that too often. Perfect finish - gelato affogato. This is now the bench for all future affogatos. I plan to come back to check out the lunch menu next."

  • "For the price, I was expecting food that was really special. The food was fine. Bread was a bit old and stale. The waiter didn't execute my request for cake with a candle for my partner's birthday well at all. I won't return."

  • "As always Peter was charming and food was superb. Service the best. My favorite is the calamari abalone style. Yum. The wine club is a great deal with a wonderful selection."

  • "Enjoyed having lunch at a truly old school Italian restaurant with servers in black suit and maitre d's calling you by name. Food is prepared "as you like it". They seem to push their house cured prosciutto and melon with burratta and tomato... along with their Sonoma Brunello wine ($20 a glass) which is steep. Overall our lunch was delicious."

  • "Received the recommendation to check out The North Beach Restaurant while Sal who drives for The Fairmont took us for a short tour prior to dropping us off at the wharf. Made a reservation and we were THRILLED with the level of service and quality of food. The prosciutto with melon and spaghetti carbonara are NOT TO BE MISSED!!"

  • "My family had an early dinner at NBR after attending Beach Blanket Babalon. We had reservations for later, but they were very helpful in getting us in before our scheduled time. The waitstaff was great, the food was very good with portions that were perfect. I have been telling friends and clients about our experience and recommending they give NBR a try when in North Beach. We will go back for sure!"

  • "My husband came here last month for business and he took me this month. Great, warm, cozy atmosphere. Ask for the corner table for two in the window. The carbanaro starter was sensational."

  • "Our evening couldn't have been better. we were seated at a table in the front at the window which was lovely. After mentioning we had just visited Sonoma, we were given 4 wines to taste. They were delicious. Ended up joining their wine club; Petrino Vineyards. Our waiter was informative and very attentive. He recommended 3 appetizers which we shared. Dinner was delicious. The owner visited with us and sent us an after dinner drink. Will definitely return."

  • "always one of the best restaurants in San Francisco!"

  • "The North Beach Restaurant in San Francisco is one of those establishments that challenges the best one will find in Italy, particularly the northern region. The food is very well prepared with outstanding sauces and the wait staff is as professional and knowledgeable as one will likely find anywhere. As well, the wine list is exceptional. We always go to the North Beach Restaurant when we visit San Francisco -- at least once a year but often as many as three or four trips there when we can manage to find the time -- and have never received anything but an outstanding meal. We were saddened to learn owner, Lorenzo, passed away two weeks before our last visit since he had become a friend from our meals there going back about 15 years."

  • "I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for wonderful food, service, atmosphere, and wine list! I have sent many families and couples and they have all loved the food! No one I have been with has had a meal they didn't love."

  • "This was our first experience with Northbeach Restaurant. We were greeted with big smiles and shown to a great table. Our waiter could not have been more patient with us explaining what certain Italian dishes were on the menu. The food was delicious, as well as the wine and prosecco He also showed us the Proscuitto room and gave my wife a sprig of fresh bay leaves to take with us when we left. It was just a two block walk to catch the cable car at Union and Mason which took us back to our hotel room. All around a great experience. We will go back."

  • "Always wonderful, and consistently delicious. We love the antipasto, which is a generous amount of calamari salad, marinated veal terrine, salami, prosciutto, mozzarella, and marinated beans. Our favorite entree is the Veal Saltimbocca."

  • "We let the waiter order for us and it was excellent and priced reasonable. Would recommend highly"

  • "Lovely restaurant right in the middle of North Beach. Had dinner there before seeing Beach Blanket Babylon. I had the caprese salad which was yummy yet very small portion. I then had the roast chicken dinner which was a nice size portion and very tasty. My date had the minestrone soup which he loved and he had the halibut for the main course which he also loved. Very tasty. The service was great. Very attentive. The only downside is the wine prices. They had a great selection yet very pricey. Next time I will consider bringing my own bottle and paying the corkage fee."

  • "We have been going to North Beach Restaurant for over 30 years. It is our favorite special occasion dining spot and the place to take out of town guests and friends. The service is always impeccable and the dining experience incomparable. Valet parking is always appreciated in the busy North Beach area. Their downstairs rooms - the wine cellar and prosciutto rooms - are unique and fun. A table by the window in front is also great. The minestrone soup is the best I've ever had - it's filled with fresh vegetables in a light well seasoned stock. I usually get Osso Buco - used to search all over SF for this dish and they do it right here. Chicken Toscana is also amazing. The prosciutto melon appetizer is a great start. Don't miss it!!"

  • "Zabaglione w/berries terrific dessert. Cioppino and the Sweetbreads were sadly lackluster. Salad ok. Wines by the glass limited, bad wine advice from waiter. Good cappucino. Nice ambience for conversation, terrific old world bar."
