Diner Reviews
  • "Knowledgeable, efficient and non intrusive staff put a seamless dining experience together. Comfortable, upright atmosphere with well balanced accoustics made it easy to converse at our table. I look forward to returning."

  • "We were seated promptly and comfortably, close to the window. The ambiance was really nice, and certainly spoke of finer dining. We had high expectations, which the high menu prices supported. Unfortunately, due to our meals and a hiccup in the service, we left disappointed. Our dish quality hinted at uninspired chefs. Food was a little dull, bogged down by too much oil, creeping towards the sloppy spectrum. Our waitress was really nice, however, she never told us the specials but did so for the tables beside us. Perhaps she improperly assumed we couldn't afford them, due to us being the only 20 somethings in the room. All in all, for a $200 bill, we felt we didn't get what we payed for."

  • "Smallish portions, but didn't feel underfed, as they were appropriate for the dish (heavier dish - smaller portion). Perfect presentation, perfect temperature, perfect seasoning. Winelist is outstanding. If you want quality and don't care about the decor this places is for you."

  • "My fiancee and I arrived at 7:15 for our summerlicious reservation. We were seated right away and offered drinks, which came a few minutes later. However, our server didn't take our order until about 7:35. We received our appetizers around 7:45 and they were very delicious. We got the chicken dumplings. We did not receive our main entrees until 8:50. When they arrived, they clearly looked rushed, since we asked several times what was taking so long. We got the steak, which was rather tough, and the chicken, which had cartilage and was not very good. The potatoes that came with the steak were hard. The desserts came around 9:10 and were actually very tasty. Ultimately, the experience was a disappointment."

  • "Business dinner. Order two glasses of champagne to start. They arrive after the appetizer. We sat watching the appetizer and empty champagne glasses. Had to ask waitress to fill the glasses. Ordered steak as my main - medium rare. It arrives nearly burnt on the outside and rare inside. I asked for it to be slightly better cooked. It comes back tasting exactly like a well-done charred steak - reminded me of my British parents cooking. The red wine was warm. Asked for it to be chilled. They completely forgot to bring it back. The whole evening felt like a lot of work for me. McEwen needs to fire some people and go back to his original methods of training. I heard him speak once at an event on this topic. Go back to your original plan!!!!!"

  • "As a first time attendee, North 44 exceeded my expectations is every way. The service was great, the servers were very knowledgable about the menu and quite friendly. The appetizers and dinner were one of te most delicious meals I've had in my life. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a wonderful dinner."

  • "My only complaint is that the half bottle of red wine that I ordered was brought to the table too warm for my taste. I asked that it be placed in an ice bucket for a few minutes, and then it was fine. Just a bit surprised that in a restaurant like North 44, the red wine was not served at the correct temperature."

  • "Upstairs was closed, so they called us beforehand because we had requested an upstairs table that we like; nice touch. Downstairs we couldn't get a quiet table at first, "because it was so busy". It worked out in the end. We then had to wait 10+ minutes for a bottle of water to arrive, during which also no drink orders were taken. Hmmm. After that, 5 stars. Good oysters, delicious trout and duck breast with foie gras. The wines by the glass offer variety and depth, but at a price. The bison my wife had was out-of-this-world. $ 400+ for two is not cheap, though...One gripe that the restaurant cannot do anything about: as with Zucca on Y&Eg, it is popular with men who take their escort girls out for dinner. And yes, it can be that obvious..."

  • "Nice room. Good service but two of us had lamb and one was a third bigger than the others. Still got two little two bite chops instead of rack of lamb. One was too rare but overall flavours were good. Just way too small of a dish for a main. "

  • "We really enjoyed out special night celebrating 46 years of marriage. We couldn't have booked a more appropriate restaurant to celebrate our anniversary. The food and service were excellent. We did not feel rushed but had leisurely service. The food was superb. The lobster bisque was delicious and had lots of lobster. The lamb chops with the risotto and fava beans was beautifully presented and was delicious. A great place for a special night."

  • "We were given a great table. The server was outstanding. The food was great! The ambience was great as well! I would thoroughly recommend anyone to go to this restaurant. the standards of service and food quality and presentation were really well done. The service was some of the best I have experienced and the food was nicely executed."

  • "An excellent dinner at north 44. Be prepared with your wallet - you certainly pay for the quality. It was extremely quiet when we went (fri night at 8:30), so overall ambience and vibe was lacking. If you want a scene this is not it (or not when we were there), but we still very much enjoyed it. "

  • "Best ribeye I have had in my life, seriously. This was my second time going with my wife and we both were again incredibly happy with the food and entire experience. Conrad Black was sitting at the table behind us which was a nice twist we didn't expect. Highly highly recommend for a romantic dinner out with your special companion. Mark mcEwan delivers quality without compromise again."

  • "My second time there. Both visits were great. I am fan of Mark McEwan and was happy to shake hands with executive chef Sash. The décor is beautiful and the staff takes good care of us always. The food was beyond reproach. Just prepared beautifully."

  • "We always choose North 44 for special occasion dining (it was my birthday dinner) and dates! Staff are knowledgable and friendly not pretentious. The portion size is generous even though the food is gourmet dining at its best. Love getting to try new ingredients while still being wowed by old favs."

  • "North 44 is the only restaurant in GTA I haven't feel the need to make a change or take a break from dining there... Since I dine in this special restaurant at least 10 times every year (I know this from the open-table annual report I receive by the end of every year) probably I have written several reviews already all of which are very good or excellent..:) Will be dining at North 44 again next week, already got reservations..."

  • "I'm not sure if it were the dishes we chose but it wasn't the greatest. It's not bad, but was nothing to rave about. $17 for cocktails? That's pretty steep."
    Dined on 2/10/2014
  • "Usually a great spot, always solid and consistent. Perhaps it was due to the busy rush of Valentine's Day, the service was slow and the food wasn't as good as usual."

  • "It felt like a bit of a classic Winterlicious setup. As much as I'm not particularly picky, my steak was definitely more done than the medium rare which was even suggested by our server before I had the chance to answer the question of how I wanted it done. The roasted beet salad was quite nice, and the scalloped potatoes with the steak were melt in your mouth buttery and milky. One of the servers dropped a knife on my lap as she was collecting the plates from our appetizer - glad that wasn't the steak knife from our main, and though they were apologetic, I can't help but wonder if we were subjects for new hires. Good food, but ironically not worth the price of the Winterlicious offering. I kind of wished I'd gone off the main menu."

  • "Food was not bad. However, the server that served my table was horrible. Not once did she come over to check up on my table."

  • "At arrival were faced by a black curtain directly ahead, stairs to the right....no one or signage to direct which way to go, apparently you're supposed to slip through the curtains to the hostess desk..who knew? Were rushed through dinner, in & out in about an hour. Crab & corn chowder was bland, barely livened up by 3 tiny croutons. Steak tartar was enjoyed, the substitution of taro chips for toast points for gluten intolerancy was appreciated. The mains extremely small with minimal sides...the steak was cooked to request but mediocre in taste & came with 3 small brussells sprouts (delicious) and a tiny flat square of what were called scalloped potatoes (?) Sticky toffee pudding delicious. Not once did our waitress ask how our meal was."

  • "A good spot to have a special meal. Steak tartare was excellent. However the entree and dessert were good but not as good as on previous visits. Maybe it was Winterlicious Nautilus is a great Sav Blanc!"

  • "Having met and followed Chef McEwan's career, our expectations were high, and we were not disappointed. Top shelf in every way...I will remember that tuna for a long time..... and the bison tartar !"

  • "Love the food! Everything was on point :) we were greeted by the doorman on a cold winter night and was seated fairly quickly. They also have complimentary coat check which is a bonus. I highly Recommend checking this spot out. The steak tartare and chowder was amazing."

  • "Rock Fish is excellent done. Fish is fresh; texture, flavour and dressing are all well done. Different kind of oysters are tasty as well."

  • "I'm sometimes worried that ordering a winterlicious menu at a high end restaurant might leave you feeling or treated like an undesireable element. North 44 treated us wonderfully and it felt like great value."

  • "We had really been looking forward to trying North 44 and decided to take advantage of the Winterlicious deal. Unfortunately, the experience wasn't really one worthy of the restaurant's reputation. While the service staff was very attentive and the atmosphere was very nice, the food was not what we'd expected. What we were served tasted good - despite being luke-warm from probably having been prepared well in advance - but the amount on the plate was really disappointing. We were in and out in less than an hour. For an expensive restaurant, they certainly are very cheap with the portion sizes."

  • "1st time here. In a word: perfect. My wife and I are critical diners, but we honestly couldn't find anything to fault regarding our dinner. Good selection of oysters, delicious scallops cooked just right, and outstanding bison. A nice selection of wines by the glass, and extremely professional, knowledgable, friendly service. The room is a bit beige-80's, but they shouldn't change it. It was chic then, and will probably will be again sometime. In the mean time, we will be back for more. Cost: $ 370. Worth every last penny."

  • "Have dined at N44 many times. Very hot and fresh bread with great tasting butter started the meal off on the right foot. Lobster salad was generous and quite tasty. The rib eye steak was 10/10 (you need to enjoy a little fat which gives it the great flavor). Friends loved the bison, tenderloin and trout. you can't go wrong with the apple crostata for dessert. Service was professional-always is!"
