NOORD eetcafe is a classic BYOB bistro with a Northern European focus. We feature locally farmed produce and meats whenever possible; served in a relaxed friendly setting.   • "This is something different, and it's quite terrific. Everything I had was awesome, from the fantastic scallop and lamb sausage to the amazing barley bread that I ate far too much of. Service is a little frantic--the place is mobbed and hopping. It's busy and incredibly noisy. But you can't miss the food here. The portions are sizeable and the prices reasonable, too."

  • "Enjoyed the meal at Noord - especially barley bread, whole bass and red cabbage. Although the smoked fish plate starter was very good the scallop and salmon surpassed the shrimp which was a bit soggy. We selected two of the main course specials: the whole fish which was very good and the lamb sausage which was a little disappointing as there was no clear lamb flavor nor texture. Vegetables were excellent including peas, carrots, potatoes and red cabbage. Finally, the chocolate pudding like dessert had good cocoa flavor and nice silky texture reminding us of marshmallow fluff from our childhood."

  • "Our first visit to Noord lived up to expectations. The food was very tasty and I loved the fresh and unique flavorings. I had the salad with pickled vegetables, it was very light and refreshing. My friend had the snert which could have been a meal by itself. We both had the striped bass special. It was quite large and neither of us could finish it, but the tarragon flavoring was wonderful."

  • "The staff at Noord are so nice and welcoming. It is a BYOB and we were immedicately greeted and had our wine opened and put on ice. After a sip of wine, we started off with some delicous bread with garlic butter. For an appetizer we had fried an chopped liver, which was beautiful and delicous. For an entree I had the Smorrebrod which had smoked salmon, smoked scallop, shrip and egg. it was also beautiful and delicous. I could eat the smoked salmon on toast every day. My husband had the pork shank with root vegatables and he thought was incredibly tender and delicious- and my picky 15 year old had the chicken breast and she ate the whole thing. I loved dessert esepcially the bread pudding. I cant wait to come back"

  • "Deliciously different! Dutch food is not a common menu item in philly. I loved the Bibb salad and trout. Both were perfectly prepared. The ingredients were very fresh and were of top quality. The clearly homemade bread made my mouth water. The flavors are strong but pleasing, reminiscent of my parents' Eastern European cooking! I love the white dishes with white table linens. Thank you, Noord, it was a treat. I will return!"

  • "We had a 5:15 reservation. As soon as we walked in the door, the host new our names and seated us right away. He was very pleasant! We ate our bread and he must have heard us raving about it so he brought us over a second helping. While we ate our appetizers (bitterballen and mustard soup) my boyfriend commented how much he loved the mustard. Within a minute, the host brought over extra mustard! The food was fantastic but the service was impeccable. It was truly one of the best dining experiences we have had in Philadelphia!"

  • "I regret that I won't return to Noord. While some of the food was (authentically, given its roots) bland and uninteresting, I had probably the best quail I ever had, showing the chef's skill in keeping the little bird succulent. The huge drawback for me was the noise level. I couldn't hear my dinner companion, and my ears were still ringing and my voice still hoarse the next day from struggling to communicate. I suppose if I wanted to dine alone with ear plugs it might work, but I'm not interested in that."

  • "We were visiting Philadelphia for the weekend and had only one evening to enjoy a meal in the city. We read reviews and chose Noord. The restaurant did not disappoint. We arrived late due to parking issues in the neighborhood. The staff was very accommodating even though we arrived 20 minutes late. The food was unique and we did not have a bad dish. The herring appetizer was the favorite. All of the entrees we tried were prepared to perfection. The chocolate chip bread pudding was too good to pass up. We loved the experience. The staff was very attentive. My only problems were parking and the fact that I forgot my wine. Both of these issues were my fault. I don't get out in the city often enough!"

I had been dreaming of the herring sliders since our last visit and was delighted when my dreams met with reality. Worth the trip, but there's more! Although I eat mostly fish, I ventured over to the lamb dish (in honor of Spring) --- a delectable treat on so many levels. Great, friendly service, too."

  • "The food was very inventive and featured totally unique flavors for us like the mustard soup and the delicious smoked fish open-faced sandwiches for starters. The home-made rye bread they bring for the table is amazing. Presentations were also very lovely, especially for the appetizers. The portions are ridiculously huge though, and no one finished both their starters and their main courses. It would be best to share a few starters and a few mains between a party of four. The room is almost painfully loud when there are large parties and very loud guests. Service was very friendly and knowledgable. Will come back in the spring for sure when they can open the windows; should be a fabulous evening!"

  • "My husband and I dined for restaurant week and had an appetizer, entree and dessert each. We were justifiably full at the midpoint of the entree course from the rich, flavorful dishes. Pork loin was juicy and paired well with sweet and acidic accompaniments. The rainbow trout was firm but flaky and filling. I would go again so we could get two appetizers and share one entree."

  • "Our party of four had a fantastic meal at Noord. Who knew that Dutch/Scandinavian cuisine could be so incredible? Every dish we had was a winner - perfectly prepared, often a bit unusual, and extremely flavorful. My wife had to have the snert (she loved the name) and my braised pork shank entree was the perfect thing for a cold winter night. The seafood dishes were also great. Joncarl and the waitstaff were all extremely helpful and friendly. We couldn't have asked for more. It got a little noisy, but everyone was having a fantastic time."

That is not at all the reaction I had upon dining at Noord, one of East Passyunk's newest enclaves for dining that hits all the right notes, quite unlike the first sentence of this review. Noord was delightful: soundtrack on the speakers that one, such as I, might, upon first blush -- and we did not bring a blush wine -- this is a "BYOB" establishment -- (we brought a light-yet-smoky pinot noir from Oregon (such a wine is a safe, but not boring, choice, for cuisine such as you find here)) -- deem lazy, then kitschy, then sincere and, by virtue of being sincere, quaint, and by virtue of being quaint, unimpeachably enjoyable. The service was, and I say (well, type) this charitably, as I do not want to be extravagantly loquacio"

  • "I thought the food was well prepared and that the flavours presented were definitely different in a delicious way. Several dishes including the croquettes, house smoked salmon and the pork loin also included creaminess as a texture either in the dish itself or in the form of sauces or almost mayo like accompaniments. I thought they were very successful at introducing a particular point of view with their food which was overall tasty and worth trying. Service was efficient and thorough, ambience was comfortable."

  • "My husband and I just recently dined at Noord with 3 other people. Tables for 5 can be hard to reserve in many small restaurants, but Noord managed to accommodate us without any fuss, even though the place was packed. Every thing we ordered was excellent, full of delicate and great flavors. We did find the food a bit rich, and ended up skipping dessert. The staff was quite pleasant and knowledgeable. On our way out we were thanked of our visit by one of the co-owner. A nice tittle touch very naturally done and without any pretense. Our only complaint would be that the noise level was a bit high. Fortunately it did not spoil our fun, but a little bit of quiet would have made our experience even more enjoyable."

I've been here twice and because it is a small space, We've had to wait 15-20 mins for my table, but each time they have sent us out an little appetizer to hold us over. The food is spectacular - I love the last dish on the menu (basically a bowl of fish and shellfish in the most delicious broth with cabbage) and this last time we had a whole striped bass and rabbit leg that were excellent. I will be returning again and again!"

  • "Vibe was very different than typical restaurant. It feels as though you went to someone's home for dinner. Very caring and personable. Chef even opened our wine. It's as though the restaurant really cares about you and your experience. Open face sandwiches quite good, easily feeds two, and used the great dark bread they do there. Mustard soup great. Not what you think. Has a carrot base so a delightful mix of carrot and mustard. Bass for 2 well prepared and tasty. Good French press. Overall, a delightful evening. Quality food and service and a caring atmosphere that more restaurants should strive for."

  • "We got the chicken/duck liver, fried pork meatballs, cauliflower soup, which was on special that night. All dishes were delicious and we were able to split it amongst 5 people. As entrees, we got the rabbit, meatloaf, and trout and all were very flavorful and delicious. I highly recommend this place if you want to try to some good food. It's also BYOB, which is another plus."

  • "Had a great meal here. The flavors were fantastic and the ambiance was a nice mix of neighborhood and fine dining. This is a BYOB so hit up the wine stores before they close. If all the liquor stores are closed, you can buy a bottle from a bar nearby (be ready to pay top dollar), open the bottle, take a sip, then take the bottle to the restaurant for proper imbibing. Also I would suggest ordering 1 appetizer and maybe sharing an entree. The portions are big; not crazy big, just bigger than other fancy places and the ingredients tend toward the comfort zone (bacon, lentils, meat, potatoes, etc). We went here with empty stomachs and left completely stuffed. A great place to feel Scandinavian amidst this slushy/icy winter."
