Diner Reviews
  • "Best reviews were for the pork belly tacos. Other notable dishes were the bacon wrapped meatloaf, short ribs, wild mushroom pappardelle and steak and frites. Parking was very difficult"

  • "We've been here before, and it's been better. This was an early (5:30pm) Sunday dinner. Patio was busy, with three tables (including ours) inside. Although our server was great, service was slow. She was overworked, having to serve both inside and out. Appetizer of fried zucchini chips was excellent (recently the grand prize winner in a local "March Madness" sweet 16 of appetizers.) Food was inconsistently hot and cold on the same plate. Special entree of the evening was inaccurately described. (Fish was on a bed of pureed cauliflower with pine nuts NOT grits.) One in our party is allergic to pine nuts; this could have ended disastrously. Anyway, as stated, it's been better. Hopefully next time Nolen Kitchen will have their act together!"

  • "I went with a group of girlfriends - the cocktails were fabulous. I like their wine list as it will have a couple nontraditional options that I can explore. The food was delicious! Best of all, five of us got to sit together outside and enjoy the fabulous weather under the stars. The only complaint? Parking. Nolen Kitchen should invest in a valet service if they really want to up their game."

  • "One hour wait with Open table reservation. Arrived to a surly attitude. 30 minute wait with a reservation stretched out to an hour. We were quickly joined by others who had reservations but ended up waiting an hour as well. Bartender was too busy to serve drinks for first ten minutes. Eventually a manager saw that the experience was declining quickly and brought us some appetizers. Poor service at the door and bar. Bring a cheerful attitude."

  • "My order was put in wrong by the server but when the manager brought it to the table is was like the sky was falling. The manager then put the order in wrong and tried to blame it on me. Not cool! I waited for an extra 15 min and they didnt even offer to comp a soda or take off a percentage for THEIR screwup. Not classy."

  • "They're busy Friday nights. Acoustics inside the restaurant are poor, when it gets noisy at the bar, it drowns out the dining area. Had the meatloaf dinner with bacon and black truffle (yeah right) - perfectly tasteless. My guest ordered two martinis, but convinced that they had no (or very little) alcohol in it."

  • "Cross between an American grill and a bistro, Nolen is surely a gem. The food is great and has neat combinations that are different from most places like this one. I got the kale and beet salad with salmon. The salmon was cooked to perfection and the salad was the perfect amount. We ordered the zucchini chips to start and could not have been happier. Great wine list too and they are very accommodating. Note for beer drinkers, $2 drafts on Thursday which is a plus for my group!"

  • "Nolen Kitchen was a great place to celebrate a birthday in our group. Even though the restaurant was crowded the service was great, and our food arrived quickly. Our waiter was personable, knowledgeable of the menu and gave great recommendations. The basil martini was delicious!"

  • "We had a table for 4 in the back of the restaurant placed between two large, loud groups. Conversation became almost impossible and it was good to leave."

  • "Neighborhood gem providing delicious food served professionally. Always consistent. Will be back for sure."

  • "I think the food was just ok...nothing special. Although my boyfriend has the scallops and those were very good. I had the Paella....it was just ok....did not seem very fresh. Also the service was ok. Our friends ordered Blue Moon beer and the waiter first said they were out of oranges. The my friends requested them again and he went to the bar to get them? Drinks were very expensive and just ok.....nothing special about this dinining experience"

  • "My fiancé and I dined here on a Friday night. The bar is separate from the seated tables so the noise level was low enough for us to hear each other. Our waitress was fabulous! She made great recommendations, was very attentive and was energetic. The food was so delicious, we loved everything we ate. My fiancé got the NY strip and it was cooked perfectly. He said it was the best steak he has had in a long time. I ordered the featured meal which was buffalo tuna tacos. So good! Everything was perfect and we will definitely be back!"

  • "I had only been to Nolan Kitchen for lunch and had only had some of their salads. We went this time for dinner and were so thrilled with the quality and creativity of flavors used I the dishes! We shared the outstanding steamed mussels which combined lemongrass and ginger, and we agreed they were the best we had ever tasted! The paella, which used Israeli couscous, also had a fabulous combination of fish and flavors. As an added bonus, our server was very friendly, efficient and well informed of the menu.We just moved back to the neighborhood and believe we have found our new favorite restaurant!"

  • "I have been here for brunch a few times and the scones are wonderful. I've had omelets there twice which are pretty mediocre but they seem to be the most intriguing thing to me on their brunch menu."

  • "On our first visit to NK this past Sunday, I found many items on the menu that I wanted to order - more than I could have that evening. Our waitress was new but very pleasant and competent. We found the paella (with couscous instead of rice) to be a bit odd - and quite a small serving for the $26 price. I also thought the artichoke/crab dip would have been better complimented with pita chips rather than pita bread. The Greek salad was delicious as was the Soulvaki wrap. The "frites" were excellent too. The blueberry crisp/cobbler was yummy - but they were VERY skimpy on the ice cream - more of a garnish than a scoop of ice cream. We will definitely try NK again."

  • "Our three previous visits were excellent experiences and that made our recent visit so disappointing. My favorite restaurant meatloaf is now bland and the fish special was a truly small piece of uninteresting grilled Mahi that cost THIRTY FOUR DOLLARS! There are just too many other Charlotte restaurants serving better food for less money for us to take a chance returning here."

  • "Side salads could have been more fullsome, but they may have been short on ingredients due to the snow and ice storms."

  • "My fiancee and I went to Nolen Kitchen for Valentine's Day, and they had a special menu for the occasion. The mushroom gnocchi was hands-down the best I've had in Charlotte (even better than the gnocchi at Aria, my previous favorite). Service was outstanding. Decor was modern, ambiance was very comfortable, and it was easy to have a quiet, private conversation at our table. Price is a bit above what most people would want for a casual weekday dinner, but is very reasonable for a date night or special occasion. I would highly recommend Nolen Kitchen."

  • "We used to love Nolen. We live 2 blocks away and walk there. But lately it just hasn't been quite up to its past standards. Valentine's Day was the best evidence yet. We arrived to find out there was a fixed menu. This generally wouldn't be a problem but the options were very limited and even more limited given my wife has a gluten allergen, basically leaving her with prime rib as her only option. We asked our server if the kitchen could do a hamburger and he came back that the chef would not bend on this. This all would have been acceptable if the items on the fixed menu would have been an improvement on the standard menu, but my beet salad was incredibly flat and the gnocchi was just bad."

  • "Our party didn't actually eat dinner here on Valentine's Day. When I made reservations via Open Table I wasn't aware there would be a limited menu for dinner. We ordered cocktails at the bar and observed the 3 entrees being served to the diners next to us and commented on the small portion size of the pasta dish. When we were seated and our waiter gave us the menus, we were surprised to find a limited version. Unfortunately, we didn't see anything we really wanted to splurge the $25.00+ for just the entree., especially for somewhat smaller portions. The appetizers, salads and desserts were of course extra. We ended up leaving and going to a different restaurant. Was it was my mistake that I didn't see a note of caution on Open Table?"

  • "We've been going here for years and almost always have a great experience. We generally come her for brunch."
    Dined on 2/9/2014
  • "I've visited numerous times for brunch and haven't experienced an issue. This was my first dinner service. It was an enjoyable experience until two things happened. First the entree arrived cool. It wasn't cold enough to warrant sending back; although, it clearly wasn't as hot as it should have been. Its unfortunate because it had potential to be special. Second, my guest and I dined in the rear of the restaurant facing Selwyn holding a group of tables. During our meal a group of seven or more people clammored together beside our table as if reunited with long lost relatives. They were boisterous, loud, and remained for several minutes. It certainly detracted from the dining experience. Oh, stay away from the blueberry cobbler."

  • "Good spot for a girls night out. Great food at great prices. Decent service. Loud. Tuesdays night is half off wine bottles and is always packed. Awesome salads."

  • "Nothing spectacular. It was ok food. Not great, but not bad. Just another dinner out."

  • "We had a great experience at Nolen Kitchen. We made a reservation with the restaurant given the Xenia group's excellent reputation and because Ilios Noche is our favorite restaurant in the Charlotte area, and Nolen Kitchen did not disappoint. Great service, ambiance, wine list and fantastic food made for a wonderful evening. The bacon-wrapped meatloaf with tomato jam was hearty and flavorful and the paella over Israeli couscous was one of the most complex and surprising dishes I have ever had. Parking was a challenge in the Selwyn Ave area on a weekend, but it was well worth the short walk through the neighborhood."

  • "The restaurant offered a great mix of standards (i.e. Caesar Salad) and a twist on the standards (i.e. pork belly tacos)."

  • "Have been to Nolen Kitchen on several occasions. Perhaps it was an off night. The food was not up to the usual standards and we felt rushed through our entire meal. Not sure if we will return"

  • "Food was excellent. Crab cakes Benedict. Salmon on the Caesar salad cooked perfectly. If only our server had visited even once with our having to ask another server to ask him for tea refills..."
    Dined on 1/12/2014
  • "All three of us have complex dietary needs. Our server was extremely accommodating and knowledgeable about everything on the menu. The hot tea selection is awesome. Gluten-free menu is one of the best in Charlotte. Chefs split one of our entrees for us so that one person with an allergy could enjoy the shared entree equally to the person without the allergy who could have all of the ingredients. Server was also very friendly and personable. We will absolutely go back."

  • "Food was wonderful, accommodated our request as much as possible for an out of the way location, will definitely continue to frequent."
    Dined on 12/28/2013
  • "Kale salad was delicious, although I added scallops, and there were only 4 tiny ones that were over-salted. A bit disappointing for the extra $10. Zucchini chips were also salty, but tasty. The greek yogurt sauce was great. It's a fun atmosphere, with a cool patio if the weather is nice. The parking lot is a difficult, be prepared to park down the street and walk."

  • "This used to be a neighborhood gem, but something is different. Went with family in town for holidays and had a bad experience. Souvlaki was dry. On the wrap, it was grilled. As a compliment to a salad, it was fried. That person ate only two pieces, and the waiter had an "oh well" attitude when told about it. Service was slower than normal yet they weren't too busy. Rumor has it that there has been turnover there in staff. Don't let it change the experience."

  • "Wonderful place all the way around..glad they have a 'parking guy' in the lot as helps a lot locating a space, which can be tight. The food and service were excellent and wind wonderful as well... Will be back. VG"

  • "This past Sunday a group of friends decided to gather together before the holidays. We decided to try Nolen Kitchen's for its brunch menu and we were not disappointed. The food, the drinks the services were devine. Our server was friendly, attentive, and out-going. I will be recommending this to my friends and family."

  • "We frequent this restaurant a lot and love the food. We came with a large group on this day but were placed in a table right in front of the kitchen. It was an awkward place to be since they had expanded our table to accommodate us, which put two people in our group practically sitting in the middle of the main walkway of the restaurant. I also didn't feel like they were very busy on the day we were there but we waited for almost 45 minutes for our food to arrive after ordering. We usually visit this restaurant for dinner and are used to them being crowded/busy but have never had to wait very long once we have ordered."

  • "Reasonably Priced. High quality food. Ask to be seated at a table in which you or your guest are not part of a long line of tables that resembles a picnic bench. Modern open floor plan looks nice BUT stacking too many tables in this open space creates noise issues whereby you might have a hard time hearing the party across from you."
    Dined on 12/8/2013
  • "Our first time. Went with friends. My wife does not eat gluten and there were many gluten free options, including Israeli couscous in the paella (which was the best dish of the evening). I was skeptical of paella without rice, but it was excellent. All other dishea were also very good. Out server was entertaining, personable, accommodating and efficient. We will be back."

  • "Nolen Kitchen is one of our best "go to" choices. It is a great place to take out-of-town guests, visiting family, and friends. As they used to say about Sara Lee (more or less)..."nobody doesn't like Nolen Kitchen." They have lots of healthy food choices and excellent service. The terrace is lovely in good weather."
    Dined on 11/27/2013
  • "We had heard about Nolen Kitchen so we decided to go. Big mistake. The noise level was very loud so we decided to go sit out on the patio. They had a fire pit and it was a nice atmosphere. We did not enjoy our food at all. I ordered the NY Strip with the Nolen fries because the waitress told me how good the fries were. There was no flavor to anything on the plate, very bland. I sent it back and ordered the scallops. They were overcooked and not very good but I was hungry so I ate them. We would never go back."
