Diner Reviews
  • "We enjoyed some drinks and noshing after seeing the film "Chef." We ordered the beignets and were not disappointed. The trio of sauces with these lightly sugar-dusted pillows of dough were absolutely outstanding. It was a great way to end our evening!"

  • "The restaurant has an open air courtyard in the center, and the ambiance is terrific. Food was great, and could be served family style so everyone got a taste! Don't order too much, because you should save room for the dessert sampler!"

  • "We chose to celebrate our 6 year anniversary with Nola's and were satisfied from beginning to end. The fresh peach mojitos were amazing. The shrimp and grits rivaled that of my Grandmothers. We sat outdoor courtyard on the main floor. Our server, Cam, was attentive and great with the recommendations and suggestions. We will return."

  • "The location of this restaurant in a vibrant area of downtown is good. The restaurant itself is interesting, lots of different rooms on two levels built around an open-air atrium. Service was fine. The food is not your modern farm-to-table fare, it's more of a New Orleans version of a Chili's menu, lots of deep fried food and sauces. In my opinion, the menu needs updating to reflect the fresher cleaner cuisine that has become more prevalent."

  • "This was our first time at this restaurant so we decided to go to celebrate my son's 20th bday. The Crabmole appetizer was good but it took a long time to arrive. It came the same time our entree came in. My daughter ordered the small plate chicken and gravy-she couldn't eat as it was too dry even with the gravy. She ended up eating part of my lunch. My son ordered the Jambalaya he liked it but he said the portion was small ( I agree). I ordered the skirt steak-it was good but for the price $27.00, I've had better. Will we return? Probably not."

  • "We had a babysitter but didn't want to have date night at a stuffy expensive place. Nola's was perfect! Fun, energetic and no kids that I saw. Great food and fun!"

  • "We order some Louisiana standards--gumbo, jambalaya, and beignets--as well as the much-raved-about crab guacamole. Gumbo was lukewarm. Granted, it was a warm evening but please give me my soup hot. If it's too hot, I can let it cool down but there's not much I can do to lukewarm soup to make it hotter. Jambalaya was alright, not note-worthy but not objectionable either. Now to the beignets: I'm sorry but I've had better ones at Disneyland. I was expecting pillow-soft puffs of dough dusted with cinnamon sugar. I got puffs all right but they were ruined by the hard exterior and doughy interior. And don't waste your hard-earned $15 bucks on the crab guacamole. Unless you got a morsel of the crab sprinkled on top, you couldn't taste it"

  • "The food was amazing, the portions were substantial. I had the jambalaya (spicy) and it was perfect. One of my colleagues had the pulled pork sandwich - it was huge. No one left hungry, no one left unsatisfied."

  • "Good for getting some drinks or celebrating a birthday. I came here to catch up with and old friend. But wasn't able to have a great conversation since it was so loud. I couldn't hear what she was saying most of time and were sitting across from each other on a small table for 2 people. It has a "party" atmosphere so probably not a good "date" place either. Drinks and food were not that bad. I would come here again but not for dinner."

  • "The 10 ladies who came for Girls' Day Lunch all had a wonderful time. We were seated in a semi-private area that was quiet so we could hear everyone talking from one end of the long table to the other. The food was delicious and the portions very generous for the price. Everyone left feeling very satisfied! Not a good place to go if you're on a diet, though! :-)"

  • "Drinks are awesome and the vegetarian Jambalaya was so tasty. I really liked the ambience of the place but would have linked faster service."

  • "It's a cute place. My fiance and I were scoping it out for a wedding reception. The pictures make it look much bigger than it is, but it's still an awesome reflection of NOLA and we were happy. Too small for a reception."

  • "I have spent an extensive amount of time being a foodie all through New Orleans so at first, I was skeptical. I was pleasantly surprised by how authentic this place is."

  • "What a fantastic dining experience. Our server, Nikki, was amazing. She had great recommendations and paid us great attention. She made the meal that much more amazing. The food was excellent. Great flavor. We often dine in our own neighborhood, but so glad we ventured out. Can't wait to go back."

  • "Great dining experience good choice of food and drinks. New Orleans themed restaurant. Entrees are a little over priced"

  • "Fun place! Not too noisy. We could all hear each other perfectly. Food was very good. We loved the tacos under "small plates". Our server, Taylor, was excellent. He was very attentive and informative. It was a perfect place for a group lunch. Love the decor!!!"

  • "We went to Nola for a large group dinner. There are private rooms available for large groups but in order to be able to reserve one, your group must spend a pre-defined minimum for food and beverages; since our group wasn't going to be able to hit the minimum, we opted for a table in the regular dining room. The service was cheery and professional, and the food was tasty. Nola is always loud, so we were expecting this, but if I were to do this kind large dinner at Nola again, I'd find a way to make the private room happen because the noise level was too loud to carry on a conversation with anyone who wasn't sitting right next to you. I love Nola, and I'll definitely go back, but maybe with a smaller group."

  • "Like this place and live in Palo Alto a half mile from here so would be a regular but... I had a bad drink here. Waitress offered to fix but the manager she refused so we just sent back. Seemed petty and short sighted. Soured my perception :("

  • "Makes me miss New Orleans... The service was fantastic, the food was to die for. I had the etouffee and my husband had the chicken and ribs. We shared lots of bites and both entrees were perfection. I have never had better fried chicken and he can't wait to go back so he can have an order of etouffee for himself! After dinner were beignets and coffee. Believe them when they say that you only need one order of these lovely sugared fritters. We each ordered a plate and, while they were delicious with chocolate, caramel, and raspberry dipping sauces, we ended up taking more than 1/2 of them home."

  • "A bunch of co-workers and I went here for a fellow co-worker's birthday dinner. Needless to say, their Stout on tap was delicious as was the Jambalaya. The atmosphere was fun and loud (we were upstairs by the open ceiling) and it was perfect for relaxing after work and throwing a beer or 4 back. Word to the wise -- if you are grabbing dinner with young children or perhaps your mom/dad, don't ask for the "birthday treat" for your friend. Unless they're REALLY into bananas."

  • "great spot for easy groups. food is good for what is expected"

  • "Pitcher of mojitos for $16 was a bargain, shrimp etouffe - true New Orleans delicious, oysters were sweet, service was friendly and efficient. the bar was jumping and the atmosphere was upbeat; great spot to eat and hang out on a hot California evening."

  • "Only had dessert, the bread pudding was really good. Service was OK, nothing worth noting. Place was so loud I thought I should have brought ear plugs. Ambiance is a bit run down, but lively nonetheless."

  • "This was our first time at Nola. We went with friends who have moved out of the country. Thankfully, I asked for a table in a quiet location, which they provided. The restaurant is extremely loud, but we were able to hear each other in the area in which we were seated. We shared 4 small plates: crab cakes, ahi tuna tacos, southern BBQ tacos and grilled artichoke. Two types of tacos was probably not the best idea because it was too much of the same thing, but they were both good. The crab cakes were quite good - large and moist. The artichoke was not as good, so we didn't finish it. Overall, it is an interesting place to come, but we probably won't come often."

  • "We return to Nola's on every visit to Palo Alto. Truly the best food and ambience of all the restaurants ."
    Dined on 6/10/2014
  • "The food was good and the server was great. Energetic environment. However, the picture NOLA wants to have of the New Orleans-style eatery with wrought iron railing overlooking a courtyard differs slightly from reality. We were stuck in a dark corner inside with a gigantic TV very close to us with no outside view. Felt a bit more like a sports bar than a nice restaurant."

  • "The hostess was very friendly and accommodating since my other party was running a little late. The waitress was great also. Nice to get some recommendations about the food. I really enjoyed my salmon!"

  • "If love New Orleans them go for the experience. If was fun to sit in the courtyard, listen to the background NOLA jazz, and visit with our friends The food is definitely NOLA - fried, heavy and big. It was the experience that stood out!"

  • "Last weekend, for my son's 19th birthday, I took him + 12 college friends to Nola for dinner. As always, the food and service were fantastic! Everyone had a great time and loved their meal!"

  • " The food and service at Nola's are both good and dependable. My son and I enjoyed our jamin chicken burrito as well as the mahi mahi tacos both of which we ordered with a side house salad. Our waitress was friendly and the service was adequate. Nola's is a good choice for lunch when in downtown Palo Alto despite prices being a bit on the high side for lunch."

  • "NOLA's one of our to go places for dinner with friends. Service is great. Food amazing (their bread pudding is to die for). It can get noisier but that's what's it all about people hanging and having fun! Very accommodating for groups and smaller parties. I've had dinner there with 1 person and 40 people :)"

  • "Our waiter, Craig, was great. Had the jalapeno cornbread- our all time favorite dish here!! The home made pepper jelly is fantastic! Tried the red beans and rice and the pork sandwich. The pork sandwich was great and huge, but needed extra sauce. Red beans and rice were just okay. A bit dissapointing. Tried the dessert sampler. The beignets with caramel still our all time favorite. Pecan pie was good as was the bread pudding, but not as exciting as the beignets. Will definitely come back- especially for the cornbread and beignets!"

  • "Had a great dinner on Saturday night. Although it was packed we got excellent service. There was a slight misunderstanding with my order but it was taken care of quickly and the manager checked to make sure we were taken care of. We left full and happy. "

  • "This was a last-minute find for last-minute plans. Our group of five was seated quickly and we were taken very good care of by the waitress. The food totally exceeded my expectations - the rack of ribs were tender and juicy, and the sides and dessert were all superb. Will definitely be returning for date nights and birthdays!"

  • "It's frequently a problem to find a restaurant that can handle large groups (8 to 12) with having to reconfigure the restaurant seating or going for that elusive private room. Nola's delivered without our having to ask. We made a reservation for 12 and were seated at an alcove off to the side. Our team enjoyed the ambience, could have engaging conversations over great food!"
