A word from Nola - Palo Alto
Nola is a bit of New Orleans located in the historic Ramona Street Building in downtown Palo Alto. Our menu consists of Creole, Cajun, and Latin cuisine. New Orleans favorites, such as hurricanes, fresh oysters, gumbo, seafood jambalaya, and étouffée, are just a few of the classics you will find. />The party stretches out over three floors, with seven different funky dining areas. Nola has one of the largest collections of Southern folk art on the West Coast. Come check out what Fortune magazine voted as "the hottest bar in the Silicon Valley." Welcome to the party--grab a Hurricane, a group of friends, wrap yourself in our mardi gras beads and “Laisser les Bon Temps Rouler!!”Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "My husband and I took our good friends here to celebrate a birthday. The food was delicious and the sangria went down smooth. Our waiter was on top of things like water refills and bringing proper knives. We had a lovely experience my one critic would be that the restaurant has TVs all over the place and I'd prefer TVs to be confined to the bar area."

  • "Service was HORRIBLE. Our server was so slow and acted like she did not want to be there at all. Food was ok... The dirty fries are amazing! But my main meal the franks chicken sandwhich wasn't my favorite. We also really enjoyed the blackberry ginger lemonade. We got seated upstairs which after looking around as we were leaving we decided we would have much rather sat downstairs in the bar or lounge area.. It would be nice if the hostess gave you an option. We'll maybe try and give the place another shot and hope the customer service greatly improves."

  • "Great service as always and food and drinks always delicious"

  • "Generally a fantastic experience. Wait staff was very friendly atmosphere and food were wonderful but gentleman who was working the front was rude and seemed inconvenienced by having to do his job. Did not ruin our night but not who I would have greeting people. Definitely recommend eating here."

  • "We dined at Nola to celebrate my daughter's birthday. We were very disappointed with the Mr T's Famous Skirt Steak entree."

  • "We met some European friends here for dinner after many years of not seeing one another. I chose it because it had good reviews and it was casual and modestly priced. Other than being quite noisy, thus making conversation a challenge, it was the perfect choice. The food is interesting with many classic Cajun dishes and the atmosphere is casual and unhurried which gave us a lot of time to reconnect (albeit with a bit of yelling.) Since it also has vegetarian and gluten free options, all of the diners could find something notable to eat. Both the regular and vegetarian jambalayas were delicious; and I tried fried green tomatoes for the first time, crunchy and piquant. We also shared appetizers and desserts rounding out our meal perfectly."

  • "Unless you know PA well, it's hard to realize what an escape NOLA is. Lunch party of six, each person was teleported to another time and place with inventive meal selections and such unique ambience. Loved it, will return."

  • "Had my first meal here with a first date, her choice. It was the perfect spot for such an event: casual, friendly, great food and margaritas, and not so noisy you couldn't talk and get to know each other. Our hostess put us in the upstairs corner table (How did she know we wanted a little privacy?), and our server couldn't be nicer. A winner."

  • "I wish the music was a bit quieter. I barely could understand my friend talking, even though we were sitting in front of each other. I ordered one dish and a a few tacos for 2 people, as my female friend doesn't eat much and we ended up spending more than what I would expect for two full dishes. $45 for a few tacos and a plate? Really?"

  • "Had a large party, we were given a private room. Our server (Brit) was GREAT! I was actually surprised how fast our food and drinks made it to our room. Looking forward to our return visit! Keep up the GREAT service and attention to detail!"

  • "I have been dinning at Nola a couple of times before but never had a chance to review. I love the ambiance at this place, where you don't have to whisper, I also love it for the fact that the audience are mix ages and anyone will fit it perfectly. Big menu and great food and oh the wine menu is fantastic too. When I was there before I had the skirt steak and its still stuck in my mind how wonderful it was, this time I order the spicy Paella oh wow it was a hit just perfect for me and the portions are great too, I think there is no bad dish at the restaurants, because it was 5 of us there and I didn't heard anyone complain about anything about their meal and my family is very vocal about anything in general. Its fit any occasion as well."

  • "Disappointed. This "restaurant" is really only a sports bar. It's loud. It's grimy. There are TVs everywhere. The wait staff is cute but not interested in service. The food sounds interesting but it's not. Pretty basic California Cajun. The red velvet waffles are not worth it. Where's the crab in the Crabamole? Both my husband's order and mine were wrong when delivered. He was given the wrong order altogether - belonged to someone else and came out a good 5 minutes before mine. Mine was missing a side dish. We were not offered any compensation for the wait or inconvenience. Our wait person was cute in her "Daisy Duke's" but service with any kind of interest in our experience or even a smile was non-existent."

  • "We had a party of 6 for dinner. It was not crowded but was too warm and noisey...just like New Orleans. The food was ok and we had fun, but it is not the type of restaurant that I would go to often. The decorations were fun!"

  • "The food at Nola was just mediocre. The Crabamole was reasonably good guac, but the crab added nothing. The Gumbo was salty yet bland at the same time. The Ahi Taco was oddly flavored, and the fish had a weird tough membrane in it that I've never seen anywhere else. The Crawfish Boil was decent, but served in a plastic bag and underwhelming for the price. The drinks were extremely disappointing. If you go to the trouble of barrel-aging a cocktail, I would expect you would get the actual cocktail right. The Barrel Aged Rye Sazerac was completely overpowered by absinthe and nearly undrinkable, while the Barrel Aged Creole was only slightly better. Neither gained anything from being aged. Not worth a repeat visit."

  • "The noise level was painful. Two out of four in our party got sore throats trying to communicate across the table. I have never had food this bad in New Orleans. My chicken n biscuits appetizer was tasteless. The chicken was tough and dry. The Pillsbury frozen biscuits available at supermarkets are much tastier. The fried catfish meal contained two pieces of fried catfish and one piece of dry and tough chicken. We had great beignets in New Orleans at the Café Du Monde, Nola's beignets were more like poor donuts made in a rectangle. The rest of our party said their food was a qualified OK. Two of us took food home in doggie bags... for the dog. Nola's web site promises "Cajun con fusion". Different does not guarantee better."

  • "Our group size grew to 12 people but Nola was very accommodating and even gave us an earlier reservation on a Saturday evening! We were seated upstairs in Hurricane Alley with another large group which made it a very fun crowd!!! Although a space A/C was on, it still got quite warm and we had to open the windows. Server was great and food came on time! Drinks and food were delicious--two pitchers of saucy’s original sangria were gone! :) ...the spicy jambalaya was the fave for most and the delta crawfish, shrimp and scallop etouffee was mmm-mmm good!!!...Only suggestion is to have some non-spicy gravy available for some folks. Overall, we all had a great time!"

  • "We went with friends for dinner, we got on time and the table was ready, the food was OK, not fantastic, and was over priced. The music was very loud, I asked the waitress twice to lower down the volume, but that did not happen, we had a hard time carrying a normal conversation. I can tell it is a good sports bar as there were cheers from the bar for the game that was on at the time."

  • "The food, service, and ambiance are absolutely wonderful. My family and I have never had an bad experience here, and this is our go to spot for any special occasion. It's also a wonderful hangout to grab a bite and drink after work, or if you just want to have a casual night out with your friends. It's a fun place for adults, but the restaurant provides a family friendly environment for kids tool. I cannot say enough good things about NOLA, and I wouldn't leave Palo Alto without making a stop here first!"

  • "We enjoyed some drinks and noshing after seeing the film "Chef." We ordered the beignets and were not disappointed. The trio of sauces with these lightly sugar-dusted pillows of dough were absolutely outstanding. It was a great way to end our evening!"

  • "The location of this restaurant in a vibrant area of downtown is good. The restaurant itself is interesting, lots of different rooms on two levels built around an open-air atrium. Service was fine. The food is not your modern farm-to-table fare, it's more of a New Orleans version of a Chili's menu, lots of deep fried food and sauces. In my opinion, the menu needs updating to reflect the fresher cleaner cuisine that has become more prevalent."

  • "This was our first time at this restaurant so we decided to go to celebrate my son's 20th bday. The Crabmole appetizer was good but it took a long time to arrive. It came the same time our entree came in. My daughter ordered the small plate chicken and gravy-she couldn't eat as it was too dry even with the gravy. She ended up eating part of my lunch. My son ordered the Jambalaya he liked it but he said the portion was small ( I agree). I ordered the skirt steak-it was good but for the price $27.00, I've had better. Will we return? Probably not."

  • "We chose to celebrate our 6 year anniversary with Nola's and were satisfied from beginning to end. The fresh peach mojitos were amazing. The shrimp and grits rivaled that of my Grandmothers. We sat outdoor courtyard on the main floor. Our server, Cam, was attentive and great with the recommendations and suggestions. We will return."

  • "The restaurant has an open air courtyard in the center, and the ambiance is terrific. Food was great, and could be served family style so everyone got a taste! Don't order too much, because you should save room for the dessert sampler!"

  • "We had a babysitter but didn't want to have date night at a stuffy expensive place. Nola's was perfect! Fun, energetic and no kids that I saw. Great food and fun!"

  • "We order some Louisiana standards--gumbo, jambalaya, and beignets--as well as the much-raved-about crab guacamole. Gumbo was lukewarm. Granted, it was a warm evening but please give me my soup hot. If it's too hot, I can let it cool down but there's not much I can do to lukewarm soup to make it hotter. Jambalaya was alright, not note-worthy but not objectionable either. Now to the beignets: I'm sorry but I've had better ones at Disneyland. I was expecting pillow-soft puffs of dough dusted with cinnamon sugar. I got puffs all right but they were ruined by the hard exterior and doughy interior. And don't waste your hard-earned $15 bucks on the crab guacamole. Unless you got a morsel of the crab sprinkled on top, you couldn't taste it"

  • "The food was amazing, the portions were substantial. I had the jambalaya (spicy) and it was perfect. One of my colleagues had the pulled pork sandwich - it was huge. No one left hungry, no one left unsatisfied."

  • "It's a cute place. My fiance and I were scoping it out for a wedding reception. The pictures make it look much bigger than it is, but it's still an awesome reflection of NOLA and we were happy. Too small for a reception."

  • "The 10 ladies who came for Girls' Day Lunch all had a wonderful time. We were seated in a semi-private area that was quiet so we could hear everyone talking from one end of the long table to the other. The food was delicious and the portions very generous for the price. Everyone left feeling very satisfied! Not a good place to go if you're on a diet, though! :-)"

  • "Good for getting some drinks or celebrating a birthday. I came here to catch up with and old friend. But wasn't able to have a great conversation since it was so loud. I couldn't hear what she was saying most of time and were sitting across from each other on a small table for 2 people. It has a "party" atmosphere so probably not a good "date" place either. Drinks and food were not that bad. I would come here again but not for dinner."
