Diner Reviews
  • "Overall excellent dinner. Initially service slow at getting food ordered. However once ordered very fast. I am from the south so used to cajun food. Very good alligator appetizer. Frog legs would be better fried than grilled. Jumbalaya excellent. I told them to add more spice and it was extremely hot but very good taste. Gumbo soup very good also. My only complaint is the bartender is very light on neat drinks for single barrel bourbons especially when considering the price. He could learn from Frank Sinatra in what 2 fingers means for a neat drink. Outside dining great with a great scenic view of the square. Inside very nice also. Loud but still easy to carry on a conversation.Staff exceptional and very accommodating."

  • "Our post-theater dinner was twice interrupted by false fire alarms, requiring that we vacate the building. Taking cocktails to Market Square set a wonderful, casual tone. Jayla and the entire staff made the absolute best of the situation. Kudos. Back at our new, outdoor table, we enjoyed ourselves and a wonderful meal of Steak Salad, Jambalaya, Pork Tenderloin and Shrimp and Grits, each one outstanding. Desserts were great. too. Thanks so much. We'll be back!"

  • "Arrived just as they opened on Sunday July 20th, 2014 and was seated promptly. Ordered Red Beans and Rice as an appetizer, the Seafood Jambalaya as the main course. Both were excellent. Service was attentive but not bothersome, my server Wendy always refilling my drinks as needed. I was so full I couldn't even attempt dessert, even though it was free because it was my birthday! By the time I departed the restaurant it was getting busy, so be sure to call ahead or make reservations online. I would definitely return here without hesitation. There is also space upstairs for large groups and I was told it was themed as a Speak Easy. Bathrooms very clean. All in all, a very positive dining experience at NOLA on the Square. Highly recommended."

  • "There was a live band that was so loud that talking across the table fromeach other was impossible. I would not go again if a band was playing."

  • "The food and wine were exceptionally good!! Our waiter (Allen) was tremendously helpful, knowledgeable, kind and patient!! The music was good but incredibly loud! We dined at a booth with a wall in between us and the band so we could talk. I'm in the symphony and get complaints from our audience about the volume level mostly at our Pops concerts. It's also too loud on stage. You're going to have a lot of deaf customers with that kind of decibel level. The quality of the band and singer was fantastic but they don't have to have the speakers up to a level of a 747 jet landing! Thank you, Dave"

  • "Glad to see Nola back after the fire. Seems pretty much the same as before, and the food is somewhat better. The barbecued oysters were fantastic, and the beignets and coffee were a great way to finish the meal. The wine selection was limited, but certainly sufficient. Noisy, but that's to be expected."

  • "very happy to have one of our favorite spots back in action. We missed the fun, active and great food place, a real Pittsburgh Gem, we are happy to have you up and running again"

  • "Went there for lunch and had the pick two special - Pork Po' Boy, Red Beans & Rice with Voo Doo fries. Absolutely delicious! Athouth it was our server's second day on the job, she was trained well and knew the menu and made great suggestions. The manager visited to ensure we enjoyed our meal and was very accomodating. Will definitely return. Please note that is highly recommended to make a reservation to be seated quickly!"

  • "Nice outside table but the roast beef po boy was not as GREAT ad our server suggested it was. Bun was big, roast beef was lacking in quality, seasoning and debris (if you've been to New Orleans, you understand). So that was disappointing, but will probably go back to try the flatbread pizza and stop listening to the server."

  • "Our reservation was respected and we were allowed to "pick" our table. The noise level is high in the bar area, but we wanted to sit and see the crowd. Both of our entrees were excellent, however expensive at $27 for just the entree and no extras. If you enjoy the bar scene then Nola's is your fun place!"

  • "NOLA is an awesome restaurant for lunch or dinner! Since I work downtown, it is convenient to walk to. On this occasion, I had the fish special with greens which was AMAZING! Their bread pudding is to die for!! Recommend!"

  • "Truly a fantastic place to go when you're looking for an upbeat atmosphere. Friday and Saturday nights the place is packed. Live blues jazz sets the place on fire! Get there early for a seat cause it's standing room only once the show starts. The food is OUTSTANDING. Never had a bad experience. The servers are exceptional. In fact the entire staff always goes above and beyond. LOVE this place!"

  • "Had a butternut squash and rapini flatbread that was outstanding. The hanger steak, Voodoo frites and Nola salad is a large portion which may be enough to share when an appetizer is added."

  • "Visited NOLA for the first time and will definitely go back when in Pittsburgh again. The food was outstanding, specifically the jambalaya and the pork tenderloin. Great selection of draft beers as well."

  • "My girlfriend and I have been to NOLA two times now and have thoroughly enjoyed both trips. The shrimp appetizer is to die for and the service is second to none. If you get a chance to go to NOLA, do so. You will not be disappointed. "

  • "Overall great food and ambience. Very good Po boys and gumbo. Been to NOLA many times and right down to Abita beer... very reminiscent."

  • "We had been wanting to eat here for quite some time. It did not disappoint. We started with the fried alligator. Yum. We both went for the shrimp and grits. Also great, but one minor complaint. The tails were still on the shrimp and with the sauce you couldn't really see them. Did not enjoy the mouth full of crunch. Drinks were good but expensive. Nice off the beaten path options for both mixed drinks and beer. We can't do this place all of the time due to the price but great for a special treat. They also had live music in the bar area that was fantastic."

  • "Great soup! Went there on a Sat at lunch before seeing Swan Lake at the Benedom.. The service was excellent, good food in fact my teenage daughter is very picky and ate all the crab bisque as well as 1/2 of the chicken cordon bleu sandwich. I had the oyster stew which had various seafood and broth was delicious!! I will go back and take my hubby...Po Boy sandwich was excellent! Tomato wasn't ripe but I guess its hard to get those in February!!! Cool New Orleans atmosphere..."

  • "I brought my wife here for our first time as a surprise/early Valentine's Day dinner. It was the first time either of us had been to Nola on The Square and I can say with the utmost confidence that this was an experience we will remember for a long time! There was a reminder call about our reservation, the service was perfect, a menu that will make you change your order half a dozen times and a great atmosphere for any occassion. I had the Seafood Jumbalaya and my wife had the Scallop and Shrimp Mac Daddy. Both were amazing. Highly recommand the French Onion Soup as well."

  • "the ambiance is lively with diners across a spectrum of age groups. Our food was very good and the service was attentive. The only negative was that out entrees were served lukewarm. The waiter advised the manager of our complaint. He explained why the temperature was what it was...in effect, that's how it's supposed to be. We accepted that, finished our meal since the food tasted good but still wished it came to us hotter. It was my first visit; we will probably return sometime but not likely in the short term."

  • "The hostess seated us immediately upon our arrival. The chosen table permitted a good view of other restaurant clientele and the open kitchen area was another entertainment option. The menu offered a variety of unexpected culinary tastes, and the fried alligator (I was told by my friend) was crispy and yet tender. I enjoyed the voodoo fries--spicy yet moist inside. Everything was well seasoned. The food portions were ample and served in a timely manner."

  • "Food was excellent, waitress was very nice and attentive and the atmosphere was fun for a girls night out. Only bad thing is that I made reservations for 5:30, They called to confirm that day around 1:30 but when I arrived, they didn't have my reservation in the system. Luckily, there was seating available and we didn't have till wait too long."

  • "Anytime a restaurant attempts to take on a specific style or culture of food, I am always concerned that they will fall flat. I am glad to see NOLA brought it with their flavors and menu choices. If you have eaten in New Orleans before you will definitely enjoy the similar flavors with a Pittsburgh twist. We were fortunate to dine with Sherradon who is one of NOLA's assets when it comes servers. She was extremely helpful on making menu decisions and kept the experience warm and delightful. Highly recommend this restaurant!"

  • "Delivered exactly what I wanted - good, well-cooked new Orleans style food in a smart but relaxed atmosphere. The jambalaya was hearty and definitely spicy. My wife had the pork tenderloin - its spicing was more subtle but very tasty."

  • "The food was as good as in many actual New Orleans restaurants. The only food item that was NOT good were the Beignets - - undercooked and super doughy. Everything else from gumbo to red beans & rice and chicken & biscuits were perfectly prepared with quality ingredients. Normal breakfast items of eggs benedict & omelets were also well-prepared, tasted fresh and were well-seasoned. Voodoo Mary cocktails were strong and uniquely flavored. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable and certainly told us tons of good things about the chef and the restaurant - she encouraged us to come back for dinner and the next time we're in town we will. Ambience was very dark, and very small - most of the place seemed like a bar - other than that - GREAT!"

  • "This was our first time at NOLA. I lived in Louisiana for several years, so I wasn't sure what to expect with NOLA. I went with a friend who really wanted to try it, since the menu looked interesting and I was nostalgic for some good Cajun food. NOLA is not a traditional Cajun/Creole restaurant. Their food is an interpretation of the cuisine. We had the fried alligator appetizer, grilled catfish, Pasta Lafayette, and chocolate bread pudding. None of the dishes wowed us. It's a quaint place for dinner, the bar looked interesting. The service was friendly. NOLA on the Square is an okay place for dinner, as long as you're not expecting traditional Cajun and/or Creole food."
