Diner Reviews
  • "The power went out 15 minutes after we were seated. Drinks had already arrived, we had ordered a series of dishes, and then darkness. The staff, when asked, did bring the cold appetizers we had requested, but after an hour of no action we had to leave to find real dinner, so no real review possible."

  • "We keep coming back to this place. It never lets us down."

  • "This is a place where my family and I come to spoil ourselves. The bar is raised high and we are never disappointed. The food is amazing the atmosphere is welcoming and the location is prime. Every dish has a signature taste that u will not get anywhere else. We often order the same dish more than once just to experience the 'wow' factor all over again. The staff is knowledgeable about the dishes and always suggests something new for us to try. I always recommend Nobu San Diego to friends and vacationers."

  • "The location of this restaurant was very convenient to get to but the food was very excellent. A little pricy but the ingredients were very fresh and tasty. I would recommend the Salted Chocolate Caramel as a dessert. It was the best part to end our dinner experience at this wonderful restaurant. Also the staff was very warm, knowledgeable, and very helpful when we had questions."

  • "Have eaten many times at Nobu in Dallas. Found the same dishes at this location to be disappointing. Perhaps it was just an off night."

  • "Terrific meal. Black cod not quite up to standards at other Nobus. Sushi was excellent but not sublime. But still generally wonderful."

  • "Had heard about Nobu for years. So glad I finally had a chance to experience it. I wasn't disappointed. Everything was delicious, waiter was very helpful with suggestions. Of course we over ordered because there were so many things we wanted to try. It was worth it, but always hate to leave delicious food on the table."

  • "The night we went the staff were all friendly. The service was quick until about 7:30 when the dinner rush hit. The plates were decorated well, but way overpriced for the amount of food you get. Definitely not a place to go if you want a lot of food without spending over $100. Overall, it was a good dinner but probably would only eat here for special occasions of just to grab a quick small bite with a friend."

  • "The food was good and easy to share. Pacing was also good though a bit quick. The only side was the pricing. It was very high and seems to cover the name more than the food."

  • "We were not blown away as anticipated. But the service was good and friendly. Unless it was just because we took a lot of our server's suggestions, most of our delicate fish was spicey. Flavorful, but I thought over powering for fish sometimes."

  • "I have a gluten allergy but love sushi... the waiter was very helpful and suggested menu items that were gluten free as well as altered some so that I could try them."

  • "The yellowfin tuna tataki with cilantro was to die for! Everything else was aamazing also ie king crab tempura."

  • "Nobu has a certain reputation that it almost lives up to. Food was good, not spectuacular. Crowded and fun. But if you just want sushi, go to a sushi place."

  • "I'm a big fan of Nobu, had great time last year so when I visited San Diego for a meeting, it was natural choice for dinner. But this time, we ordered bunch of sushi and it was good quality but now wow. Maybe will try different menu."

  • "Went for 2nd Anniversary. Staff was outstanding! Restaurant design and decor beautiful. Food was good, but unfortunately couldn't match up to the service. Staff definitely top shelf!!"

  • "I was a little disappointed. The salad was over dressed and too much dressing. The main course of sea bass umami style was not good. If I have a choice of morimotos or nobus I prefer nobus."

  • "We had to ask for our waiter 2-3 times, it became a joke at our table "Where's Waiter?". The family style plates came very slowly and left us sitting and waiting for long periods of time. We selected the Chiefs choice which should have allowed the chief and the waiter to pace the meal better. I've been to the Nobo in LA and it was wonderful, the SD Nobu is disappointing and I will not be back. In my opinion they are understaffed or poorly staffed and you will pay for it."

  • "Had Chef's Choice and Nobu Signature omakase dinners. Dishes were prepared with finesse as expected. 3 of 7 courses were spectacular (Lobster & shiitake mushroom, Black cod miso, seared Amberjack with jalapeño dressing). Sushi chef was great. Wait staff was elusive. Biggest letdown was start of clean up at the sushi bar where we were seated at 10:30pm. We had 2 more dishes to go and were watching the sushi chefs scrub down the refrigerated glass panels with soapy green scouring pad. Big disappointment considering we requested bar seats to be able to watch the skillful sushi chefs execute fine cuisine. I appreciate the need for compulsory sanitation at a food prep area, and the obligatory chores before closing time but this is unappetizing."

  • "The food was some of the best seafood I have ever had. Sashimi was fresh and flavorful. Tempura was light and crisp. The sweet miso black cod was to die for. I will go again and again."

  • "My reservation was for 7:30 on a busy saturday and they actually seated us early in a romantic corner booth. The ambiance was bustling but not overly loud and the service was top notch. We ordered sashimi and hand rolled sushi which was all incredible. I would definitely return."

  • "I was very impressed with the Nobu, with everything from the service, atmosphere, service and of course the food. The service was top notch and the server(s) were on top of everything. They answered everything i asked and did not disappoint. The food was dynamite and I was probably the best sushi I ever had. I was expecting to pay a lot more and felt like I walked away with a "steal" Very happy with my experience."

  • "I confused this Nobu with Noma from Parts Unknown. I was expecting food that I had never eaten before but got a Sushi based theme. The food was very pricy for what I got. I did the Nobu Experience for $100. I would not do it again."

  • "My husband and I love Nobu (or any of chef Nobu Matsuhisa's restraunts for that matter) and try to eat there any time we're in a city that has a Nobu. We were excited to find out there was a location a few minutes away from us in the Gaslamp district of San Diego. While the food was mostly as delicious as ever, the service was lacking. We sat at our table for about 12 minutes without a menu, and finally had to flag down a busboy to request menus. No drinks were offered. The night continued like this. It was the first time we ever felt Nobu was a chain restraunt. With the prices you pay for their food, there is an expectation of good service. Don't waste your time at this location..."

  • "A high end restaurant on the San Diego scene in the heart of the Gaslamp."

  • "The food very good, different and nice. A little bit spicy for those whom don't eat spicy food. The prices are a bit high but acceptable. Poor beer selection, big wine and sake selection."

  • "Unfortunately, the likelihood of us returning to this location is now slim. The sushi was ok, but nothing special. It is very high priced and some pieces are tiny. Not worth the money was the comment made by all six people in our party. This was not our first time here. Approximately 4 years ago we ate here and recall the food being great. The sushi is what brought us back. But not so much this time. In addition, the service was terrible. At one point we ordered our drinks in twos because it took so long to get anything."

  • "It's always good to go to Nobu but I am really starting to get tired with the lack of attentiveness from the staff. Yes, we did go on Saturday night, and yes, I know they were busy, but I just did not see them make an effort either."

  • "Good food, but I will never return ! Full loud overcrowded on a Wed. Expensive, but Special. wines 5x retail Price, OK, the list also OK. Server friendly+competent Food: chef´s signature menue at 150 US$. all courses fantastic. Big negative: I wanted no sweet dish, asked for Rice/noodle/soup instead in advance. Chef let me know several times he won´t /can´t do it (hello ? in a Sushi place ?) and we could have an "apple" in the form of fruits. This is just ridiculous for the Price we paid (times three) and an arrogant awful Kind of attitude of a Chef. Even if all the rest was excellent including each and every course and the Service, this restaurant will never see me again."
    Dined on 2/12/2014
  • "The food was sensational. The tempura king-grab in a ponzu sauce headed the list- but the Peruvian-style beef kabobs come a close second (and at great value). The wine list is broad but not distinguished. The servers are not expert at wine service and there was no sommelier to speak with. For a restaurant of this quality, that is disappointing."

  • "We love Nobu and count on consistently excellent food and even the total experience. We have been to this location at least half a dozen times. The atmosphere is old and quite run down, not what a Nobu should be. The food is generally very good but at their price market it is highly disappointing to have even one dish that doesn't meet Nobu expectations. We will continue to go to Nobu but not so sure about the San Diego location."

  • "We had a party of 4 and had heard how great Nobu New York was so we decided to give the San Diego location a try. Without exception, it was the most disappointing dining experience all of us had ever had. The service was so slow, the various plates that were brought out took so long between courses and each person received their food at different times. The thinly sliced white fish was so tough to chew that we joked on how bad a regular piece of fish would be! The other turn off was the corkage fee of $30 per bottle! Most other upscale restaurants will do it for $10 or $15, even $20 at the finest restaurants, but $30?!!! Unacceptable. Over rated, over hyped and over priced. Never again!"

  • "We know that Nobu is expensive but it is ridicules, we decide to try it on restaurant week to taste a find out it is that good to came back, and for sure we never going back to a restaurant that it suppose to be famous for the sushi and fresh fish and the 1st course of the menu it was tiradito and the fish it was not a bit fresh, then the main course family stile serve it was scallops and it was Only 4 little ones, we end up paying more than $130 dlls and with hungry, for good sushi and more food."

  • "Went to Nobu to celebrate birthdays and it happened to be restaurant week. Great way to try new dishes for a great price. We were served four courses with dessert. Our favorites were the salmon karashi-su-miso tacos and the scallop spicy garlic. We were there on a Thursday night and we loved the energetic vibe of Nobu. We will definitely come back."

  • "Went here for the san diego restaurant week. It was a five course meal for only $45. Love the black cod with jalapeno dressing and the sashimi salad with matsuhisa dressing! Will definitely go back to try the other dishes!"

  • "Nobu San Diego was not as special as I would have thought. Their menu was not memorable. There are a lot of great sushi places in San Diego so I expected a great deal more. The fish was very good but portions were very skimpy for the very high price. This is a place to go if you are on an expense account. Service was very attentive."

  • "The sashimi, AMAZING!! The scallops, OUT OF THIS WORLD DELUCIOUS!! Service was great, from the moment we walked in and were greeted till the moment we left. A little tricky to find the hostess srand when you walk in, but bartenders quickly ended our confusion and guided us toward the designated host area."

  • "The sushi was super we did the Cali roll/spicy tuna/rainbow/ and the sashimi was super. We got the top cut though. If you are looking for cheap ...meaning cost this is not the place for you. If you are looking for quality food/service and drinks this is a great place. We also noticed the bar was super packed and had a great ambiance. Our sushi chef made our orders perfectly."
