A word from Niu Japanese Fusion Lounge
Opened in August 2007, this spacious pan-Asian eatery in the River East right next door to the AMC Theatres combines original design with a rare sense of humor and adventure. Niu's fluid, sexy, casually luxurious dining room can accommodate up to 225 guests, so large parties are definitely welcome. An added attraction is the sleek lounge area complete with a spectacular "must-see" chandelierhich.
One of the reasons that people keep coming back to Niu is of course of the eclectic food and drink selections. Our inventive menu blends Sushi, Japanese, Thai, Korean, and Chinese influences: little bites of modern Tokyo, Bangkok, and Shanghai, all blended in with the energy of Chicago. The menu offers a variety of sushi basics, but the real enticements are the one-of-a-kind "fusion makis" with such names as "Sexy Mexican," "White Angel," and "Diablo". For those sushiphobes, there is a fantastic selection of vegetarian, stir-fry and soup creations.

And not just to read the menu. It might help you hunt down your server in the darkness that is Niu as well. Food decent but the only reason to go here is if you're going to see a movie at River East.

Concierge at the W Hotel recommended when I mentioned Asian. It was a wonderful dining experience for the 4 peo. We definitely recommend, close to several major hotels, and Michigan Ave. Seafood salad, crouching tiger, sea bass, just a few of what we enjoyed.

Our server was absolutely perfect. Her support system and everything else was majorly flawed. Bus boys were unable to bring the most minor things like chopsticks or soy sauce do to a language barrier. Our server was left to serve 7 tables and bus etc. The interior of the restaurant remained empty with servers standing around. The food was great, but wouldn't go back due to service and I live next door.

Several people had recommended Niu over a period of months, and it turns out they were on the mark. Niu Fusion offers tasty food at good prices and is well worth checking out. We sampled the fried shrimp spring rolls which were my favorite of all. We also ate the shrimp maki sans eel sauce which was tasty. Many selections made choosing an entree a bit of a dilemma, but settling on the Wok dish of asparagus, mushroom, and bell pepper with scallops in a teriyaki sauce turned out to be a fine choice. The vegetables were tender and the sliced scallops were surprisingly good. There's Japanese, Korean, Thai, and more on the menu at Niu~ including sushi~ and we shall return.

Niu looks extremely swanky when you first walk in. Very nice looking restaurant and excellent service. Only problem with this place is the quality of their food. I have honestly had better sushi at the Jewel-Osco. There was nothing special about the sushi or the appetizers we ordered. The prices weren't bad until I thought about the fact that I spent $120 on dinner for two with each of us ordering a drink and felt completely unfulfilled when I was done. I still need good sushi! Unfortunately we will not be returning to Niu and I personally would rather have a redbox date night with Jewel-Osco sushi than ever return to Niu.

This was not my first experience with Niu. I absolutely love the sushi, and that they will alter orders at no charge. For example, I won't eat eel, and they'll switch it out for something I do like. Many of their rolls deviate from the standard, and most are delicious. The service is generally quite good: friendly, knowledgable, prompt. They also have a pretty good wine list. What I don't like is the ambiance. It is always too dark in there, making it hard to see the menu and what you're eating. The music is very loud, which makes it difficult to talk to dinner companions.

Our party of four was visiting for a conference and decided to try this place for lunch since it was only a block away, thinking an hour and half would be plenty of time to eat and get back for the afternoon session. We were terribly wrong. We were virtually ignored by the two waitresses who were working (it took 20 minutes for our order to be taken), and no one seemed to have any idea why our order took more than 45 minutes to be brought to the table. Neither the servers nor the management offered an apology for the unreasonable wait time or poor service, which was probably the most unacceptable part of the entire experience. If you have any kind of time constraints, stay away from this place.

This place has great sushi and general tsao chicken is what we had. Can't wait to go back again. Been there twice now and was fantastic both times. I would eat there everyday if I could. Great location right next to the movie theater too. I was sad when I ran out of chicken. Really good portion size for the price and I love the food.

Having read some very positive reviews on Niu, I was expecting to find some great food there but this was far from being the case! Sushis had far too much rice and all fishes but pepper salmon were tasteless. I thought that some were deep frozen in fact looking at the "juice" that surrounded some sushis on my plate. Spider rolls were better but makis were disappointing too. Definitely not a place I would recommend...

This place may have suffered by comparison to our dinner at Union Sushi the previous week, which was excellent. Unfortunately, while the ambience and decor at Niu was great, the food was extremely disappointing. Soft shell crab was mushy and fishy-tasting. Yellowtail rolls were mealy and bland. The gyoza was rubbery and tasteless. Even the soy sauce tasted like vinegar. The server was helpful, and maybe we caught them on an off night, but based on this one visit, we won't be returning.

Niece was in town and staying near navy Pier so we tried Niu Japanese Fusion. Great room, cool sleek look but still warm and not too noisy. We were seated near the waitress station which is a little noisy and asked to move to the back of the room. They could not have been nicer and moved us without a problem. Same with the waite staff, our server was knowledgeable, friendly and never rushed us even though it was a Saturday night. Food was good, lobster fried rice excellent! Lots of choices with both food and drinks. Great alternative to the Navy Pier scene.

I have recently discovered this gem North of the river. In this area it is not easy to find a reasonably priced lunch spot, but I've found it! I have eaten here with just one other person and with a group of seven co-workers and every time we had great service and delicious food. The sushi is fresh and beautifully prepared. The entree selections are pan-Asian with good options for vegetarians and meat lovers. My "go-to" lunch is the Bento special which comes with a salad, miso soup, entree (choose from some yummy selections like pad thai) and a California roll -- all for $13.

It was my third visit. I love the golden seafood crepes. We ordered the crunchy roll and the Amazing Green (seasonal special). Maybe because it was almost 9pm, the ingredients for the crunchy roll seemed a little off. The shrimp tempura in the roll was kind of soft and the rice didn't taste as good as it should have been. Amazing Green had very spicy avocado sauce on top but when I ordered I didn't realize it was supposed to be spicy. I enjoy the ambience at Niu though, not too crowded, not too loud. I just hope next time the sushi will be back on track.

Spent the weekend in the city and wanted to go for sushi with a group of people. I've been to Niu before and the food was great then and it didn't disappoint this time either. The rolls were delicious, good service and atmosphere. The only drag is the tables are bit really easy to sit at without knocking your legs and kicking your fellow diners.

Second time here - first was with my fiancee, second was with another couple. The sushi is as good or better than any I've had anywhere. Normally we get a roll (sizable) and a hot dish - the General Tsaos is also very good. Other couple tried several rolls and all were delicious. Check it out for sure.

The food we had was good at a decent price. The only complaint I have is that I made the mistake of asking for the chef's recommendation without asking the price and it turned out it was 7$ a piece for bluefin sashimi. This was a shock especially since most menu items are ~15$ for a full plate.

Wonderful meal with very fresh seafood in a relaxed, but hip room. The room is very large but the decor makes it feel warmer with interesting artwork and lighting. I thought the room was attractive. Our waiter was attentive. The dishes are artfully presented. I felt the prices were reasonable, especially for a rather touristy part of town.
