A word from Niu Japanese Fusion Lounge
Opened in August 2007, this spacious pan-Asian eatery in the River East right next door to the AMC Theatres combines original design with a rare sense of humor and adventure. Niu's fluid, sexy, casually luxurious dining room can accommodate up to 225 guests, so large parties are definitely welcome. An added attraction is the sleek lounge area complete with a spectacular "must-see" chandelierhich.
One of the reasons that people keep coming back to Niu is of course of the eclectic food and drink selections. Our inventive menu blends Sushi, Japanese, Thai, Korean, and Chinese influences: little bites of modern Tokyo, Bangkok, and Shanghai, all blended in with the energy of Chicago. The menu offers a variety of sushi basics, but the real enticements are the one-of-a-kind "fusion makis" with such names as "Sexy Mexican," "White Angel," and "Diablo". For those sushiphobes, there is a fantastic selection of vegetarian, stir-fry and soup creations.

Diner Reviews
  • "It was my third visit. I love the golden seafood crepes. We ordered the crunchy roll and the Amazing Green (seasonal special). Maybe because it was almost 9pm, the ingredients for the crunchy roll seemed a little off. The shrimp tempura in the roll was kind of soft and the rice didn't taste as good as it should have been. Amazing Green had very spicy avocado sauce on top but when I ordered I didn't realize it was supposed to be spicy. I enjoy the ambience at Niu though, not too crowded, not too loud. I just hope next time the sushi will be back on track. "

  • "Two girlfriends and I had a great time for a sushi night. The service and ambiance was good! The food was amazing! I will definitely be going back again!"

  • "Good restaurant. Fun. Overpriced drinks. It's what I expect out of a trendy downtown restaurant. The food was really good too."

  • "Spent the weekend in the city and wanted to go for sushi with a group of people. I've been to Niu before and the food was great then and it didn't disappoint this time either. The rolls were delicious, good service and atmosphere. The only drag is the tables are bit really easy to sit at without knocking your legs and kicking your fellow diners."

  • "Wonderful meal with very fresh seafood in a relaxed, but hip room. The room is very large but the decor makes it feel warmer with interesting artwork and lighting. I thought the room was attractive. Our waiter was attentive. The dishes are artfully presented. I felt the prices were reasonable, especially for a rather touristy part of town. I would definitely return!"

  • "Second time here - first was with my fiancee, second was with another couple. The sushi is as good or better than any I've had anywhere. Normally we get a roll (sizable) and a hot dish - the General Tsaos is also very good. Other couple tried several rolls and all were delicious. Check it out for sure."

  • "OMG the lunch special on sushi was unreal!!!! 7 bucks for 10-piece rolls of all my favorites! This is definitely going to be my weekly lunch spot! Must try the Rock N' Roll roll:)"

  • "The food we had was good at a decent price. The only complaint I have is that I made the mistake of asking for the chef's recommendation without asking the price and it turned out it was 7$ a piece for bluefin sashimi. This was a shock especially since most menu items are ~15$ for a full plate."

  • "A virtually flawless dining experience. Not to be missed when in town. Remarkable in almost every way, and a lock for dinner any time I return to Chicago. ."

  • "This sushi was some of the best I have ever had. Definitely recommend this place!"

  • "We always have a fantastic experience at Niu. Cool decor, dim-lighting, low-key, but energetic, and always a wonderful team of hosts, bartenders, and service staff. The best part is the incredibly delicious sushi menu; unique and flavorful. The Mellow Yellow, the Rainbow, the White Angel are just a few of our favorite sushi rolls, but everything is amazing (believe me, we always try a new sushi roll when we're there, and we're always impressed). PS...if you like coconut, indulge in an amazing coconut martini. Yum!"

  • "This is a great place to have a nice dinner of sushi and japanese noodles before a movie at the AMC River East 21. There is a good selection of Saki and many interesting cocktails. I'm also a fan of the plum wine. The noodles are tasty and all the maki rolls I've had there have been great. I'm a big fan of the White Angel and the Dragon rolls."

  • "Shared two appetizers, a noodle dish and a sushi roll. All were very good. Enjoyed a flight of sake something that I wish more places offered. The service was just below outstanding with minor waits. Décor was modern and noise was lower than moderate."

  • "I went here for dinner on a Thursday night. The restaurant itself is beautiful and has a nice ambience. I made reservations and was quickly seated upon my arrival. The service was great and the food was good. The hot appetizer I ordered was a little cold and not as flavorful as I thought it would be. The sushi was good, but nothing special. I would recommend the restaurant if you live in the area, but there are probably better sushi restaurants in the city."

  • "Niu serves superb sushi, some of the best in town, and although it is not cheap, it is less than several other sushi restaurants of similar quality. The ambience is clean and elegant, the menu focused on to what the restaurant does best, and always deppendable."

  • "The décor and design in this restaurant gives it a warm and inviting atmosphere. We went on a Saturday for lunch and the place was pretty empty. A bit pricey, but not surprising given its location. Good size maki rolls and very fresh ingredients. Other than the cost, not a bad option if looking for sushi in River East. Small perk - parking in AMC garage next door is validated, cutting the parking fee in half."

  • "I took my fiancé there for Valentine's day after work and the food was absolutely amazing. Our waitress did however forget a few things like our drinks and plates but she was very nice regardless. This place is great for any occasion and it is a hidden gem.."

  • "A restaurant next to the movie theater, that is typically half-empty, should know it will be crowded on Christmas and staff up. Opportunity missed."

  • "We went there on Christmas and were pleasantly surprised with the food and decor. I got one of the rolls on the specials list an it was great! My boyfriend got the chicken pad Thai-- the portion was massive."

  • "The location next to the AMC21 is the best benefit. The food overall is avarge for Japanise style resturants. The rolls are OK but stay away from the fried rice. The service can be very slow. Took almost 20 minutes to get the ordered drinks served and then the main courses were served before the apertisers."

  • "We were looking for something different than the typical Chicago steak joints, Italian places, and large Michigan Ave restaurants. Since it was the day before Thanksgiving, we wanted the option to get a good meal, but not a heavy one... This Japanese fusion choice was the perfect fit for me, my wife and my 13 year old daughter... My wife and I got very good drinks from the bar and nicely done sushi... My daughter was not without choices...and was very pleased with the steak teriyaki. We all shared a tempura appetizer, which was as good as I have had... The service was attentive, although the young Midwestern waitress was not steeped in Japanese food culture, and could stand a little training... Overall, a great dinner choice."

  • "We've dined here many times and the food and service is consistently excellent. While traditional Japanese favorites are available, the chef has a creative flair of blending new flavor and food combinations. Definitely worth a visit! Also very affordable."

  • "The uni shooter I had was the best part of the meal. That was good Food came fast. But..sushi was bland and tasted like a mouth full of cream cheese. Does every roll here have cream cheese? If I want fish with cream cheese, I'll get them on a bagel. That was the white something roll. The other roll was filled with such finely minced fish that it had this "cream filling" like texture. Why do places mince up the fish like that? If the menu says it's filled with salmon, I don't expect salmon paste. Service.. Friendly but half the time I was trying to get my waiter's eye so we could get our check and get to the movie. Didn't even check to see how the food was. This place is more style than anything else. Won't come back here or recommend it."

  • "This is the third or fourth time I've been here. .I usually have a great time here and that's why I chose to come back. Our server took his sweet time to take our order. But otherwise it was good. We got Mochi for desert. Best part."

  • "Niu is a real asset to the neighborhood. The sushi and sashimi are top notch, and the wok dishes are delicious as well. I tried one of their specials, the Shrimp Cha Sha. I rarely order pure shrimp dishes anywhere, but this one was great. We also enjoyed the ceviche appetizer, and my guest liked the kung pao chicken. The green tea ice cream is difficult to pass up. It's not overly sweet and actually tastes like green tea unlike some other restaurants' offerings. Only negative was inconsistent cocktails. I ordered two of Niu's variant on the old fashioned (called the Old Fashion East). First was perfect, while the second tasted like orange bitters with water. Maybe the bartender changed."

  • "Niu was a perfect place for friends to gather and catch-up. Having some allergy issues Niu and our waiter were very accommodating to ensure dinner was enjoyed. The ginger martini was SO good. We started with seaweed salad & edemame as an appetizer. Dinner included the Unagi plate, which I was told was cold. We also enjoyed a California roll, jalapeño roll and lettuce wraps. We would recommend Niu."

  • "So we go out for dinner after Sunday, Shakespeare matinee. We try to find places that we can walk to from Navy Pier so that we don't have to move the car. That's how we ended at Niu eating passable Asian dishes in a large, empty, darkened room. Maybe it plays better crowded at night or for tourists---but it left us underwhelmed - especially since you are still paying typical downtown prices for your drinks!"
