A word from Nirvana
There is that dimension where there is neither earth, nor water, nor fire, nor wind; neither dimension of the infinitude of space, nor dimension of the infinitude of consciousness, nor dimension of nothingness, nor dimension of neither perception nor non-perception; neither this world, nor the next world, nor sun, nor moon. And there, I say, there is neither coming, nor going, nor stasis; neither passing away nor arising; without stance, without foundation, without support. -Buddha, on Nirvana

Nirvana is not a heavenly abode that one goes to. Nirvana is a mindset that one exists in. So whether it's the department break for lunch or dinner for two; whether it's a hunger for curry or a thirst for lassi; whether you dine in, or take away, our food assures that you take away the peace of mind that comes with only the perfect blend of spices, at the perfect Nirvana.

Diner Reviews
  • "Tough to be good when you are serving buffet style food. The atmosphere was good and the food was OK."

  • "Excellent option for vegeterians. Quiet ambience. Excellent food. Tried their grilled vegetables, okra something and adraki gobi-all excellent. Service could be faster and more attentive, but I am nitpicking."

  • "We found this restaurant while on vacation in New York using reviews, and it was close to our hotel so we decided to give it a try. We were pleased with it, although I must stipulate that I've only had Indian food a handful of times, so it's not an area of expertise. The decor was fine, nothing special but nice enough. The food was tasty, though mine wasn't as spicy as they told me it would be (not that that was a bad thing - it still tasted very good). The portions were HUGE and we definitely could have just split one entree and had a bit of rice and bread and such; I came nowhere near to finishing my meal. Most importantly to me, the prices were reasonable and the service was EXCELLENT - I'd definitely recommend it."

  • "First time in New York and we sought to have Indian food. Being Indian, we have high expectations when we eat out. In order to be considered good, the food has to be way better than Mama's homecooking! Nirvana surpassed our expectations and (sorry Mama) it was better...way better...than homecooking!"

  • "The service was very good and the evening we went it was very quiet. Bar downstairs was empty but looks like it would be fun. The food was good but not the best I have ever had. Typically when I get chicken tikka marsala and lamb vindaloo the meat is falling apart in the sauce so it seems creamier. This was good but was more chunks of meat in the sauce as if it needed to cook a few more hours to become what I'm used to. It was good but I think it needed a little more flavor."

  • "the staff was very friendly and helpful. The ambiance was fantastic. Food pretty good, but I thought the chef uesd much to much salt in our chicken tandoori dish otherwise the food was good. We mentioned this to the waiter and he offered us dessert free of charge which I thought was very sweet and professional"

  • "Went for weekday lunch buffet. Good options, vegetarian and non-veg (chicken, goat). Plenty of food, and get as much naan as you want. Service was good, kept making sure we had everything we needed. Quality of food was very good; and staff kept making sure buffet was clean, full and fresh. Chicken tikka masala was good, not the most flavorful I've had; chicken tikka was great; other vegetarian dishes were really good too. Definitely recommend, and definitely going back."

  • "We started off with Vegetable Samosas, my wife had the Chicken Tikka Masala, and I had the Nalli Gosht (braised lamb shank). All was great. If you like lamb the Nalli Gosht is fantastic. The service was good, but was a bit disjointed as it seemed that the server kept changing. I would visit again when back in NYC."

  • "Went with a friend who was visiting from London. Had never been to Nirvana before and was happy with my choice. There is a lot of interesting choices just not the usual Saag paneer and chicken tikka masala. The service was very good and the ambiance upstairs was very good to talk and enjoy your food. The decor is quite nice. The food was mixed. Some dishes were very good, others just ok. Please skip the Casatta... better to stick to Indian desserts. Overall, one of the better Indian restaurants around."

  • "Walking distance from our apartment. We always go to Nirvana for the most delicious food. We get the samosa, chicken korma, chicken tandoori (so deliciously spiced). Roti is good. Aloo matar is good. Didn't get the amuse bouche this time, wonder why. The complimentary dessert was good. The wine selection is good. The service is good. The food is good. Would recommend when in the area."

  • "The restaurant is on the second floor; do not get thrown by their bar which takes most of the first floor. The design aesthetic on the second floor was surprisingly nice, given the bar scene below. The food was good overall and the service was friendly and attentive for the most part. My biggest disappointment was that I had requested that my dish be mild and instead, it came fully spiced and essentially inedible."

  • "Our NYE dinner could not have been better! Quiet, cozy, warm and inviting with superb service and wonderful food. The staff is especially gracious and George made sure we were happy and taken care of. We make this a regular stop when passing through NY. A definite gem without the hype, just true value and perennial satisfaction."

  • "I was surprised to eat this authentic Indian food (starters and as apmain courses lamb Saag and rabbit). Even the interior is respectable for an Indian restaurant and offers an industrial charm with its naked walls and hig ceilings. The portions are huge and I recommend to be cautious with the amount of starters (max 1 per 2 persons). Also, take the food mild or medium max. I chose the spicy version, but contrary to India where the food is simmering in the hot sauce, here they simply add more chilly that ruins the taste. Last but not least, the prices are very reasonable for the choice that we had."

  • "Gem of Indian Restaurant near Grand Central Station. Clean, pleasant, attentive service, dining room upstairs is quiet and soothing. Bar on first floor is fun scene as young professionals pile in after work. Food is well prepared, with reasonable choices."

  • "I'm not an expert in Indian cuisine. I felt this place was OK, a bit in the middle ground compared to my previous Indian dining experiences. Service was good, starting with the hostest at the lower level and continuing with the staff upstairs. The upstairs table where we were seated seemed to be located in a spot that had a funny odor but I couldn't figure it out and did not request a table change. My chicken tikka masala was not interesting. Her lamb Vindoo was the same. Naan was fine. We finished the Naan and most of the rice. Didn't finish our plates. Quiet sunday night, OK Indian food, and 1000 open table points (ahhh now you know!...)."

  • "Nirvana has been consistenly terrific over the years, the food is always fresh and very tasty. You can tell by the clientele that it is also authentic. My only minor cavil is that the furniture is starting to look shabby. But, overall, I would highly recommend this place."

  • "Nirvana was just what we were looking for in a neighborhood restaurant in the Murray Hill area. Traditional Indian dishes are served in a quiet and traditional setting. Food was good if not spectacular and the service was timely and efficient."

  • "Nirvana was the setting for a reunion of old friends over the weekend. We had an early reservation at 6:30. The table was ready right on time. The food was wonderful. There are a wide range of typical Indian restaurant dishes but some amazing specialties too. I had a lamb shank in an onion sauce that was falling off the bone tender. My sister had a selection of vegetarian items that she reported as mouth watering and my niece loved her Lamb Korma. The wait staff were attentive but didn't hover. All in all a perfect evening. I would definitely return and recommend to my friends."

  • "We love this place. The amuse bouche was wonderful, compliments of the chef. Nice way to start the meal. This time we had two more people with us which gave us the opportunity to try even more great dishes. The samosa is one of our favorites and this time we also tried the scallop appetizer. Wonderful dish. We always get the chicken korma and this time we also had the unbelieveably delicious tandoor mahi mahi. The fish was so tender and the flavor profile of the sauce they used was out of this world. Want to try even more dishes the next time we go."
