A word from Nina's Trattoria
My inspiration for Nina's Trattoria comes from two of the greatest cooks I have known, my mother, Nina, and my grandmother, Nona Caterina. Growing up in an apartment beneath my grandparents' household, I was often treated to culinary delights. On holidays the entire family enjoyed the most elaborately prepared meals. Nonna was from the Mediterranean coastline village of San Pier Niceto, Province of Messina, Sicily where she lived on a farm.
Our Menu, like Mama Nina's and Nona's consists of fresh local produce and the best the butcher and fish market have to offer. Our recipes consist of a few family specialties, and they go on to include traditional and contemporary dishes from various regions of Italy including: Calabria, Basilicata, Abruzzo, Lazio, Tuscany, and Trentino-Alto Adige.
Buon appetito!

Diner Reviews
  • "This restaurant has been off my list of places to eat as it looks very bland and safe for people that like chain restaurants. My friend convinced me I should try it with the groupon deal they seem to always offer. For $35 two can dine there and I thought that really was too good to pass up. It's why I gave it a "fair" rating overall. I made a reservation on Opentable for 6pm on a Sunday, a month or so ahead. 3 hrs before dinner they called and insisted I need to either come at 5 or 7 because the tasting menu requires staggering. We reluctantly changed to earlier and arrived to a restaurant with all but 2 tables empty. We were alone for a while until 1 other couple came in by the time we left. The food was all pasta and salad, no meat."

  • "My husband and I had a delicioius dinner at Nina's on a Friday night about 5:30. It was very quiet, not many diners but it was early, and we will definitely be back. We are already planning our next visit with some friends."

  • "Two things that bothered me about this restaurant were first that I made the reservation on OpenTable I did not expect to get a phone call hours before asking for a credit card to guarantee the reservation after making the reservation on OpenTable especially when I show up and find out the reservation was cash only and second as I was on the other end of the table I'm not sure what happen and thankfully one in our party caught it but some how there was an extra $160.00 on our bill which was removed."

  • "It's BYOB and Cash Only, be prepared. It was our first visit to Nina's and won't be our last. The place is pretty small and I was a little concerned that everything we said would be heard by the other diners. and visa-versa. Not an issue, I think they painted and decorated with noise canceling materials. Didn't even here a glass tink from the other tables. The food. How can I put it - awesome. We chose to do the 'taste menu'. Chef's choice and he didnot disappoint and graciously accommodated our no meat request for 2 of us (4 in our party). 4 salads, 4 main and 4 desserts. Each different and excellent. Ricotta gnocchi was excellent and my favorite. Portion size right on. The waiter had a sixth sense there when needed. Excellent."

  • "I went here about a month or two ago with some friends. We found a Groupon deal. It's charming place located dead smack in the Italian Market, which that alone gives this place charm. The Chef is in immediate view of where ever you are seated at the restaurant. My friends and I, all ordered something different yet the dishes had similar tastes and was plated the exact same way. I was hoping for the chocolate connolis at the end of my meal but they came out extremely cold and small. Not great at all:(."

  • "Food portions were good (smaller portions more romantic) Was my first time eating here and I thought it was great. Exactly what I wanted for a Valentine's dinner. Classy n intimate, not too loud and homey. The only critique would be quicker service. I would've liked a few minutes shaved off each course ran but when the food arrived it was great."

  • "Fish cakes were very salty and not very good. Pastas were good, nothing special. Desserts looked like they were made at a supermarket and tasted like it too. We had the whole restaurant to ourselves, and not a single person even stopped in for the entire time we were there. We will not be back. The server was the very nice and attentive."

  • "We dined at Nina's for my girlfriend's birthday brunch. I have been at Nina's before for dinner and it had always been fantastic. I was blown away by how good the brunch was as well. We had 16 people, which I was worried would cause poor service...anything but. We were given the entire upstairs floor to ourselves and the service was superb. The food is always, always good here and I love how quaint and true to the Italian Market it is. I highly recommend both for dinner and, now, for brunch and large parties as well."

  • "This is a great little restaurant in the Italian Market. I've eaten brunch and dinner here. Both were great. It is a BYOB which is always a plus for my wife and I. The staff are friendly. The food is always HOT."

  • "We went on Saturday night with a party of 11, and were very pleased. There was only one waiter, who seemed to be a little overwhelmed, so our service was a little slow. But he couldn't have been friendlier, and the food was really great. Our salads were huge, and wonderfully prepared. I am looking forward to going back, but with a smaller group, and maybe during the week instead of weekends."

  • "We had a very pleasant dinner at this quaint BYOB on 9th Street, a place we have been wanting to try for a while. We called ahead of time as one of us is gluten free, we were assured that there was plenty to choose from. I was quite disappointed as there were only 3 choices, none of which I would have chosen. I did end up enjoying the entrée I picked and overall, it was a great dinner."

  • "We went here on a Wednesday night for an anniversary dinner. Since it was a weeknight it was very quiet. The service was great - attentive but not hovering and the food was so good. The gnocchi was like a feather pillow. Incredible! Our only complaint was it was cold outside and there was so curtain over the door doubt was cold every time someone opened the door."

  • "Amazing food, great service (food served quickly, and requests fulfilled promptly), good ambiance, reasonably priced. It was very quiet with only one other table occupied, but then again, it was a freezing Thursday night. I love the decor, too - very charming and cozy. A must-visit in South Philly."

  • "Very small neighborhood eatery. It was a cold night and the temp in the restaurant was frigid. Food was delicious!"

  • "The waiter was nice and helpful with recommendations. There was a nice selection on the menu and the food was tasty. But don't come here if you're in a hurry. The night our group came, there was only one waiter and one cook in the kitchen. However, this completely suited our group as we were there for a holiday celebration and wanted to linger. I can't wait to go back."

  • "We visited Nina's to experience their food tasting. The food was good, service was very good and the atmosphere was warm and cozy. There was a large group in the restaurant which was a little rowdy but the staff happily relocated us to another area where it was quieter. We will definitely visit again."

  • "A small mom and pop kind of place in the heart of Italian Market. I've been here twice now and this is one of my favorite byob's! The service is excellent and the food always blows me away. Everything is very fresh and homemade. They make incredible risotto dishes and their gnocchi melts in your mouth. I would highly recommend this place for couples or big groups!"

  • "Nina's Trattoria is a true neighborhood gem. It's cozy atmosphere, friendly and attentive wait staff, and wonderful food make this a go-to place if you're looking for a relaxed and affordable Italian dinner (BYOB!) in the Italian Market neighborhood. I recommend making reservations, as the place is pretty small. Also, it's cash-only, so make sure you come prepared!"

  • "For a group of 8 on a Saturday night, the service was great. Our wine bottles were opened quickly and food came out all together at a perfect pace. Everyone had a great time and loved their dish!"

  • "Delicious light homemade gnocchi in several different sauces. Portions just right, not overwhelmingly huge. Byob is great and prices were reasonable. Small corner gem but only drawback was noise level way above average. Would definitely return."

  • "In a city with so many great food options, this place doesn't deserve your time. It squanders a charming location in the Italian Market with poor food and stilted service."

  • "Nina's is a neighborhood restaurant that I would very much like to support but after dining there a 2nd time this past weekend I must say I will not go back. The menu is terribly limited, serving only pasta and risotto dishes. They did not have one fish or meat entree to offer. On the night we dined there it was very humid and pouring rain outside. They had all the doors wide open so it was uncomfortably warm sitting at the table."
