A word from Nightwood
Welcome to Nightwood. Jason Hammel and Amalea Tshilds, owners of Logan Square's Lula Cafe, invite you to join us in Pilsen -- at our open kitchen, on our patio, in our wine room, with the warmth and fragrance of applewood scenting the air.

We are a farm to table restaurant, featuring local produce and sustainably sourced meats and fish on an ever-changing, handwritten menu.

Spit roasted chicken, whole slow cooked pork, squash grilled over the open flame, a simple bowl of perfect fruit and sorbet. Hand in hand with the best farmers and craftspeople of the midwest, we cook with bold simplicity and care. We are looking forward to seeing you soon.

We had been kind of avoiding Nightwood for a couple of years, but are pleased to note that earlier shortcomings have been addressed: this time portions were pretty generous; food was lipsmackin' good; and service was friendly and helpful. The pork belly with shiso was the clear flavor winner, with the parsnip agnolotti with matsutake coming in close second. The duck breast had a slightly strange taste - gamey? Desserts were profoundly inventive and the array of creative ice creams was a delight. Not cheap - with cocktails, wine and tip approaching $100/person - but the ride makes you forget about the fare.

Charming restaurant with delicious brunch. Friendly staff, great coffee, and the donuts are to die for...order as an appetizer. I ordered the bagel sandwich with trout, cream cheese, arugula, bacon, and over easy egg - it was an explosion of flavors and utterly delicious. My father ordered the burger - it was colossal yet elegant. I will definitely be going back for brunch and cannot wait to try for dinner!

Booked an early table on same day and had no problem getting in. Arrived 30 minutes early and they put us right into a nice front window table in main building (there is a patio seating area that is 9/10ths enclosed, but still makes you feel like you are outside). Great service. Interesting food choices, well prepared. One mistake with one meal order - but within a minute the right entree made it out to the table. Wine list was nice - A little crowded and a bit noisy, but seemed like a mix of couples on dates and larger parties of 6-8 having a good time. I really enjoyed it. Neighborhood is full of art galleries and other signs of pre-gentrification. Valet was useful - reasonable at $10 for a major city.

This is my first visit to Nightwood. It was my friend's 81st birthday, and the restaurant made it a very memorable evening. Beginning with John's warm greeting, the knowledgable, gracious server, the delicious food, and the finale, a plate of cookies with a candle. The wait staff overheard us talking about going home for a homemade birthday cake, so they gave us scrumptious cookies with a candle, to be boxed and taken home. How thoughtful was that? We won't wait for a birthday to return to Nightwood. It's a favorite restaurant already.

When we're at a brunch spot, how they care for our kids is an indication of what they are as a service restaurant. Nightwood was wonderful with ours. Honestly one of the best service experiences of my life, and that's saying something. The food is fantastic. I recommend the bacon donut. It's perfect! Light, sweet, savory all at once. The hush puppies alone could bring me back. And my duck confit eggs were yummy. Though we go across the city to get there, we will be back.

I wanted to try a restaurant in the Pilsen area, and I decided to try Nightwood because I like the farm-to-table concept. This restaurant is definitely a place I will attend again! It was small and cozy with great food. It's on an empty street, so you won't get the crowds that places in other neighborhoods do, but it's definitely worth the trek to Pilsen. I had the pork belly with green beans, and it was delicious. It tasted homemade and everything was well cooked without trying too hard. My friend ordered the burger and fries, which was similarly good. The fries were definitely worth it. The mozzarella appetizer was excellent as well, although the desserts didn't live up to the rest of the meal. Overall, a great place. I will go back!

Everything at Nightwood is fresh and fun, but the entire menu is a bit rustic flavorwise. The hand-pulled mozzarella is nothing like I'd ever seen before--more like a flameado at a Mexican restaurant but without the Mexican flavors--meaning it's melted and dredged in oil and seasonings. The agnolotti and the cavetelli, though delicious, still had a more earthy/rustict flavor profile, despite the ingredient lists. We also got the Punch for 2, and although refreshing, it lacked depth.

I live in the West Loop, but leave my favorites on Randolph to frequent Nightwood between two and four times per month. My dining experience last night was appalling. The service can be described as: inconsiderate (e.g. practically throwing shared-entrees on the table without serving utensils and walking away), rude (e.g. failure to make eye contact; clearing dishes before the food was gone), lacking (e.g. not speaking to us, not asking if we'd like anything else -- another bottle of wine, anyone?). Our bill was $350 for three -- reasonable, but the new menu was incredibly salty and, as a result, wasn't inspiring. In addition to the food, there appears to have been staff turnover -- the cost of which is the loss of a regular customer.

I was excited about going but when we got there I asked the server about some stuff on the menu and he didn't have much to say, couldn't describe much for me so we ordered anyway, quail was flavorless, so was duck, cauliflower and cheddar was blah and we couldn't find any cheddar in it, my girlfriend's fish was ok, but just ok.The only think that saved the meal was the desserts which were fantastic, Apple Pie , Chocolate tart and Popcorn with peaches and ice cream. Oh and the drinks were ok... All in all a bunch of food that looked good but fell short on flavor.

We went for my wife's birthday. I drive by this place often and have been wanting to go for some time, so i thought her birthday was a great opportunity. Plus, my co-worker has been bragging about her experience there for months now. So i was excited about going. The place is awesome, the staff was super friendly, the food was amazing, a little pricey, but for what you get it is well worth it. Great drinks. Cocktail menu was really cool. every component of the meal was flawless. The only thing i would change would be where we sat. Next time i'll plan on sitting in the back bar by the kitchen. You'll get a real good look at the kitchen crew put out amazing plate after amazing plate.

Delicious bday brunch for my wife with fantastic donuts (we split the bacon ____ one as an appetizer, and then they gave us a free chai ____ one with a candle in it), and my egg plate thingy was really great, too. Every plate I saw had 3 of these magical tater tot orbs on them, basically finely-shredded potatoes shaped into a ball and heated til the outside is crispy, salted, and ready for ketchup. Friendly service and great meal!

Based upon reviews, I was expecting much more from this restaurant. It was totally mediocre and high priced for mediocrity. Their heirloom tomato appetizer tasted no different than any tomato with ordinary olive oil. The spaghetti/eggplant was a relatively small portion(for the money) and very salty. Our server was very knowledgeable of the menu but lacked personality. The best I can say is the water glasses were constantly filled.

Nightwood changes their menu daily so whatever someone may recommend may not be available during your visit. Our table had the duck, chicken and bass. All were delicious and served with a medley of unique fresh vegetables. While absolutely delicious all the way around - the fish and duck were a little heavy on the salt. The service was top notch and amazing all around with suggestions. They even brought out a special birthday treat. If you go during the week street parking in front of the restaurant is rare; however if you go down the street right by the car wash you won't have a problem finding something.

My wife took me to Nightwood for my birthday. We loved it! The chef has a unique approach with a strong focus on fresh fruits and vegetables. Even the meat dishes seem to feature creative vegetable creations accompanied by excellent meat preparations versus the typical meat focus. Nightwood is not a vegetarian restaurant (although a vegetarian would love it). The fishes and meats are excellent, but the chef is a wizard with fruits and veggies
