A word from Nightwood
Welcome to Nightwood. Jason Hammel and Amalea Tshilds, owners of Logan Square's Lula Cafe, invite you to join us in Pilsen -- at our open kitchen, on our patio, in our wine room, with the warmth and fragrance of applewood scenting the air.

We are a farm to table restaurant, featuring local produce and sustainably sourced meats and fish on an ever-changing, handwritten menu.

Spit roasted chicken, whole slow cooked pork, squash grilled over the open flame, a simple bowl of perfect fruit and sorbet. Hand in hand with the best farmers and craftspeople of the midwest, we cook with bold simplicity and care. We are looking forward to seeing you soon.

Diner Reviews
  • "Appetizers and drinks were excellent, but I surprisingly found my duck entree to be a bit lacking. My girlfriend felt similar about her pork. Both were a bit fatty and lacking any kind of complex flavor. Service was good, but we did wait a bit to put our order."

  • "Always good. Enjoyable foodie twist. The burger rocks. Took clients that were visiting from out of town. They loved it. I wish Nightwood had more round tables - we were seated at a rectangle one. Made conversation difficult. Our waiter made excellent wine recommendations."

  • "Grey food great service too loud. Enjoyed the food and the service. Be sure to try the smelt."

  • "very expensive for what is served such as a chicken thigh for twenty five dollars"

  • "have never been for dinner but the Sunday brunch is fantastic - particularly their unusual take on donuts, like bacon carmel etc..."

  • "Brunch was delicious and service was great. We were 4 friends catching up after not seeing each other for some time and never felt rushed to order or pay our bill. I am still thinking about the Chickpea pancakes...they were unbelievably good. A great savory breakfast. Not sure what kind of coffee is served, but it was also great. And, who doesn't love those breakfast tater tots!"

  • "The freshness of the ingredients was wonderful. The variety and use of spices and flavors was great. They were flexible in letting us do a little "family style" mixture of entrees and appetizers. The semi-outdoor area was delightful, and the bar seating facing the kitchen was special…we hope to come back and sit there! We had a great time."

  • "We had a very enjoyable dinner experience. The duck was fantastic and the wine list was more than sufficient. It was a bit noisy, but that is to be expected on a crowded Saturday evening. Desserts were all fantastic, and the price ranges were sensible. I will definitely be returning."

  • "Delicious! Staff was friendly & attentive! Decor was beautiful. Excellent wine list, and dessert list was exquisite!"

  • "I'm not huge on writing up reviews. I will say this though.. My girlfriend and I enjoyed every moment of our most recent experience at Nightwood. Cocktails, Rose, vegetarian accommodations, a dessert reference to my all time favorite mystery series, and all topped off with the perfect pairing of Sherry by our server. Thank you for everything, Nightwood!"

  • "A little noisy on a Friday evening - very vibrant - good ambience excellent service and very fresh and creative food. We had a great time and will recommend the restaurant any time. Keep on cooking!"

  • "We came to Nightwood to celebrate a family gathering. We sampled 2 appetizers, 5 different main courses and 3 sides. Everything was delicious and interesting. The grilled octopus app was to die for in a spicy mole sauce. The cornmeal gnocchi main was so delicious and unusual. We also tried the roasted chicken, served with pickled radishes, duck breast, cheeseburger and bass - all standouts. For dessert we tried the chocolate bomb - truly worth splurging for. The outdoor setting was so peaceful and gave us an extra sense of privacy within the patio setting, with its wood slab and ivy covered walls. The service was impeccable. We will definitely be back for another occasion!"

  • "Thank you for coming to the neighborhood. Truly a destination spot for others. Not your greasy spoon brunch spot. Good food served early. Or dinner, or whenever. Everything from Slagel eggs, tots like you have never seen and a slab of bacon to something different and on spot like trout cream cheese or a butterscotch bacon donut."

  • "Our server was outstanding. He knew the nuances of every dish and suggested great cocktail and wine pairings. Very attentive and probably the best service we have had all year. The food was also very good. Loved the focaccia and onion spread. The starters were great - a salad and the pulled mozzarella. I had the pork belly for the main and it was a bit too fatty - my only complaint to a near perfect meal."

  • "I had heard of this restaurant and had always wanted to try it. The biggest draw for me was their changing menu with fresh, seasonal items. Went for my girlfriends birthday and we both had a wonderful experience. The dishes was flavorful and the components all went together very well. The staff was very attentive and helped decide on drink selection. The rose selection was great and the mixed drink I had was made very well. I cant wait to go back and try some more."

  • "We had our rehearsal dinner at Nightwood, and have returned the following two years on our anniversary. We have had exceptional service every single time we have been there. The food is inspired and exciting. The menu is ever-changing, but always seasonal and fresh. I am pregnant and had a non-alcoholic cocktail that was actually on the menu, which was fun to see. My husband had great beer and wine recommendations, and the dessert was just phenomenal."

  • "This restaurant is trying too hard. They have so many weird ingredients in their food that it tastes off. And the whole restaurant was empty and they chose to seat a noisy table right next to us. I'd pass."

  • "The food is wonderful, and I like the casual, hip vibe layered with a comfortably warm, welcoming, and service-oriented ambience."

  • "We have been frequenting this restaurant for more than three years, and we have never had a bad meal there. Our recent brunch, however, was exceptionally good! The range of the menu seemed even better than before, and both of the dishes we had were scrumptious. As we are both vegetarians, we really noticed the increased number of vegetarian options, which was fantastic. The server was sophisticated and attentive, the ambience was perfect, and we will certainly be back!"

  • "We have ate here 2/3 times before and have always liked it. The fresh ingredients makes the food different each time. Started with an appetizer of fresh pasta with a unique sauce. The trout and vegetables was enjoyed. And I have seen the burger go to other tables previously and always looked good, but so many other items look good and you can get a burger anywhere, but I tried it this time, and all I can say is WOW! Hard to pass up the more unique dinner items but if you have a chance the burger is phenomenal."

  • "We dined there on a Friday evening. Everything about the dinner was great. The wine was excellent and server was able to help pick one out we would like. The food was awesome and variety in the menu even though it's not a huge menu. Will dine there again soon!"

  • "Perfect service, delicious combination of very fresh food. Appetizer salad was a great starter, as was the punch for two. Very happy with the main course as well. Very cool spot and they obviously know how to run a restaurant."

  • "4 adults celebrating 2 wedding anniversaries and 3 of us had the cheeseburger! The french fries were great but, come on, we can afford more than the burger and yet that's what 3 out of 4 thought would be the tastiest thing on the menu. My husband had the steak and was disappointed with the size. Too small and served with a small potato quartered. At least add an attractive veggie. Cherry pie was delicious! We have eaten at Nightwood before and were happier with the choices and tastes during the winter."

  • "I had been hearing about Nightwood for quite some time and was finally able to experience it. I recommend visiting it during the week, I'm sure it's impossible to get in on the weekends. We went Tuesday evening, early reservation at 6:00. We were the first table but it quickly started to fill up. The service was very attentive and not rushed at all (I think that was because it was Tuesday and people were not waiting for tables). Unfortunately the temperature was quite cool for July, otherwise we would have loved to to sit on their patio, beautiful! I loved the small menu with local selections. A little heavy handed on the olive oil, but that may have been our menu selections. Look forward to a return visit."

  • "Arrived on time for our 8:45p reservation for a party of 4 and were seated right away. Started with a bottle of rose, the white gazpacho which was amazing, grilled octopus which had delicious intense flavor, and a pasta with morels- good. The main courses were also all excellent- the sea bass with morels, squash blossom, & roe; duck with sour cherries; and a melange of summer vegetables, each cooked differently and in a way to bring out the maximum flavor & character. Even though we were satisfyingly full, we topped off the meal with dessert- a black berry tart and a slice of cherry chocolate pie. Food and service were great. Our server was well-informed, pleasant and helpful in navigating the menu for a guest with a gluten allergy."

  • "We had a wonderful experience at Knightwood! The place is a gem and the outdoor seating was trendy, yet comfortable. The service overall was great and we appreciated our server's (Mark) suggestions. We enjoyed a bottle of wine, and chose from a pretty extensive list...we had some help from Mark! :) We shared two entrees...the Trout was OK, not amazing...a little too fishy for me. The beef was so good that I can't wait to go back to order it again! The after dinner treats were my favorite...get the cookies in addition to any other treats on the dessert menu, you won't be disappointed!!"

  • "Nightwood was a great experience. The food was delicious - especially the green garlic agnolotti - and the service was pretty good as well. Other than the agnolotti, every dish was very good but not spectacular. Nothing was anywhere near bad, but nothing made me reconsider the way I look at food. The agnolotti and black raspberry/black sesame dessert both came close, however. Nice wine, knowledgeable service, would definitely go again. Nicely done!"

  • "I’d been looking forward to trying Nightwood for some time based on reviews and feedback from friends. Unfortunately, my experience was not so good. Maybe it was the chef’s night off? The menu was promising, with innovative combinations and seemingly good ingredients. However, some things didn’t work so well -- and all were way over-salted. We were wondering if no one actually tasted things in the kitchen, or if they just salt everything with wild abandon (as has been the case with a couple of other seemingly conscientious farm-to-table restaurants around town). Whatever -- at these prices, I expect more care in seasoning. I’m in no hurry to return."

  • "Our daughter and her fiancé recommended Nightwood as one of their favorite Sunday brunch choices. Our dining experience was everything they promised it would be. Excellent service amd delicious food. We will gladly return in the future and would most certainly recommend the restaurant to friends. The donuts and the tots were simply delicious!"

  • "Nightwood is a true gem. I have been twice for brunch and it's been amazing each time; can't wait to try dinner. Always get the doughnuts (even though they're $5 each), and trust your server to know what's best on the current menu. It changes often, which is good because you can always try something new, but bad if you wanted to go back for the specific purpose of eating a much loved entree again. Do yourself a favor and go now!!"

  • "Phenomenal steak, quality wine list, and a great atmosphere for a special occasion. The restaurant was a little too noisy at times and the portions could have been more generous."

  • "I wanted to love nightwood and almost did/do. The food was fantastic but the service was spotty at best. We were seated for almost 20 minutes before our server came by (and that was only after we asked the manager) and it was hit or miss from then on- long gaps between table visits. The guy refilling the water was spot on though! And the food really was tasty. Just not sure I'd go back because the service left a bad taste..."
