Welcome to Nightwood. Jason Hammel and Amalea Tshilds, owners of Logan Square's Lula Cafe, invite you to join us in Pilsen -- at our open kitchen, on our patio, in our wine room, with the warmth and fragrance of applewood scenting the air.

We are a farm to table restaurant, featuring local produce and sustainably sourced meats and fish on an ever-changing, handwritten menu.

Spit roasted chicken, whole slow cooked pork, squash grilled over the open flame, a simple bowl of perfect fruit and sorbet. Hand in hand with the best farmers and craftspeople of the midwest, we cook with bold simplicity and care. We are looking forward to seeing you soon.

  • "Nightwood was a great experience. The food was delicious - especially the green garlic agnolotti - and the service was pretty good as well. Other than the agnolotti, every dish was very good but not spectacular. Nothing was anywhere near bad, but nothing made me reconsider the way I look at food. The agnolotti and black raspberry/black sesame dessert both came close, however. Nice wine, knowledgeable service, would definitely go again. Nicely done!"

  • "Nightwood is a true gem. I have been twice for brunch and it's been amazing each time; can't wait to try dinner. Always get the doughnuts (even though they're $5 each), and trust your server to know what's best on the current menu. It changes often, which is good because you can always try something new, but bad if you wanted to go back for the specific purpose of eating a much loved entree again. Do yourself a favor and go now!!"

  • "I wanted to love nightwood and almost did/do. The food was fantastic but the service was spotty at best. We were seated for almost 20 minutes before our server came by (and that was only after we asked the manager) and it was hit or miss from then on- long gaps between table visits. The guy refilling the water was spot on though! And the food really was tasty. Just not sure I'd go back because the service left a bad taste..."

  • "I love this place: the care and thoughtfulness put into the delicious and interesting food, the choice of drinks, the atmosphere, and the good service. The pricing is reasonable. It's a little hard to get to without a car, but free parking is easy to find. I've gone by myself to eat breakfast at the kitchen bar. I've gone with just one other person to catch up over dinner and to celebrate her birthday (though she didn't know that until the cake came out). I've gone with family and friends as a group of four. And I've gone with a group of 7, but that was probably too big for this place because I couldn't really have a conservation with the people on the other side of the table. Still, I think it's an all around excellent experience."

Everything we had was a wonderful mix of flavors and we will definately be going there again sometime. We started with a couple of signature cocktails and the pate, then I had the duck and she had the lake trout. Desert was the mouse and the rhubarb pie."

  • "Although we had brunch there several times in the past, this was our first time there for dinner. We found it to be just as great as our previous visits. The food is wonderful. It is creative and we tried a few things we had never had before. We were a party of four. Our son and his wife are foodies and love this place. The starters were unusual and extremely tasty. My daughter in law and I shared the duck and the chicken dishes. Both were very good. The wait staff and host were very attentive and even gave us complimentary appetizers. All in all, it was a great night out and we would highly recommend it. "

  • "Ambience was great! Food was phenomenal! Had the pig ears for appetizer and fried crab... For entree we went with the Steak.. Great choice. All the dishes looked amazing. The only negative- My wife and I were celebrating our 10th yr wedding anniversary. At time of reservation, under special request, we wrote "celebrating our 10th yr anniversary". Well,we were a little disappointed not to have this acknowledged. Not that we wanted something free but when we've celebrated in the passed other establishment have greeted with Happy Anniversary welcome or any other way to make it an even more special night at their restaurant! "

  • "After all the great things I had heard about this place, I was overall pretty unhappy. Though the menu was creative and eclectic, none of that stuff matters when it comes right down to the taste. The food was very bland and the portions were ridiculously small. We had to go eat again after the dinner. And we're both pretty slim people with normal appetites. Service was "eh, ok." Plenty of refills on our water. Wouldn't go again. "

Having to take a cab both ways added to the overall bill. Next time in Chicago will try other place. Ambiance and service are great. The hamburger my friend had was great. Best French fries ever. Fabulous white French wine from Gascogne region. Desserts were delicious- rhubarb pie and a chocolate flour less one."

For example, the softshell crab was soggy and overdressed. The short rib pasta appetizer lacked a lot of flavor and sauce. Overall, disappointing especially for the price point. "

  • "We live in the neighborhood and have been wanting to try Nightwood for a long time. We finally went last week and has such high hopes! I knew based on reviews that the food was overpriced, but I was shocked to learn how much so. The pig ears were so hard we could barely bite through them. The pasta appetizer was delicious, but the serving size was a joke. The chicken with chickpeas was so over-seasoned we couldn't finish it. The bass was cooked perfectly, but the "crispy potatoes" on the side turned out to be 2 round potato chips (seriously?!). We left hungry and $120 poorer. Will definitely not be going back. There are much better restaurants in the are that are worth the money."

It was my first trip to the Pilsen neighborhood (this is a bit off from the central Pilsen hood) but I plan to go back. Living in Chicago one often tends to stick to a few close neighborhoods but I have found a new gem to return to!"

  • "We arrived on time and we were told we needed to wait "while our table was being prepared". The bar was fulland it was a little too chilly to stand outside, so we stood by what appeared to be a extra host stand. We waited for 20 minutes, which is on the high side considering we had a confirmed reservation. I dine out very often, and know this can happen once in a while on a busy night. However, what I found completely unacceptable was the callous attitude of the management. Not once were we offered any kind words, or apologies, neither while we waited, nor when we were finally offered a table. At Nightwood's price point, I don't think diners should have to put up with such deficiencies in service, amounting to rudeness. "
