A word from Nightwood
Welcome to Nightwood. Jason Hammel and Amalea Tshilds, owners of Logan Square's Lula Cafe, invite you to join us in Pilsen -- at our open kitchen, on our patio, in our wine room, with the warmth and fragrance of applewood scenting the air.

We are a farm to table restaurant, featuring local produce and sustainably sourced meats and fish on an ever-changing, handwritten menu.

Spit roasted chicken, whole slow cooked pork, squash grilled over the open flame, a simple bowl of perfect fruit and sorbet. Hand in hand with the best farmers and craftspeople of the midwest, we cook with bold simplicity and care. We are looking forward to seeing you soon.

Diner Reviews
  • "I'd been on the mailing list for Nightwood Sunday brunch for over a year before having an excuse to go. It was delicious - really interesting pairings of flavours, wicked spicy Bloody Marys, good doughnuts and Intelligentsia coffee. I'll be coming back."

  • "Just when you thought you had every kind of pancake this place does a brioche / griddle cake / dessert like pancake. Service was amazing! Atmosphere was fun and energetic. Great place for brunch."

  • "I went to Nightwood on a dinner with a group of friends. Due to the size of our party (8), we were sat downstairs. The interior is decorated with taste, and cozy. Service was excellent and very friendly. My slight disappointment came from the food. Food was not bad, but several dishes which seemed interesting lacked flavors and a bit of finesse (the foie gras had very little taste and the caramelized pig ears are very chewy and barely taste like pig ears, my duck cassoulet was alright but quite heavy and salty). That leads me to say that it is slightly overpriced for the level of food, and location. All in all I could come back because of the atmosphere and great service, but only for a few selected dishes."

  • "Given it was still winter, we should have realized the food would not be local, but we were still a bit disappointed. It seemed that the portions were small and several of the dishes were ordered seemed overly complicated ... and perhaps not worth all the effort (like the pasta with goo). The space is great, the service was terrific, the food just didn't really suit or satisfy our group of 4, And it was quite expensive. We were hoping for a more low-key, local experience."

  • "went here on a 2nd date. the place, food, and service all amazing. but we had to yell at each other to talk and the seating is so close nothing is private. but again great food."

  • "My lady and I very much enjoyed this restaurant. We sat at the seats by the kitchen, which was entertaining and not loud/hot/disturbing at all. The atmosphere is elegant and friendly, the menu was very creative and the food was prepared with care- and delicious! This was a very satisfying dining experience and made the special occasion even better."

  • "Nightwood is the best all-round restaurant I've been to, and I mean best in food, ambience, service, and value. There are certainly expensive restaurants who can provide excellent dining experiences, but for the price (esp because of Chicago Chefs Week) Nightwood has been the most worth it. It's excellent food in a fairly casual, unpretentious setting. The servers were friendly and had impeccable timing. It's a little hard to but that's the only downside I can think of."

  • "while most reviews may favor the food at nightwood, i must highlight more. the food was fantastic, creative, & delicious. however, we were so very impressed with the service: attentive, polite, gracious & impeccable. ALL the staff carried a great attitude about them, rare in the restaurant business. we applaud those who treat others how they want to be treated!"

  • "This was to have been a special dinner with my very best friend. She has a sensitivity to garlic. The restairants response from the server to the manager was completely inappropriate. The server didn't seem to know what to so and recommended a dish which turned out to have garlic! Next was a specially cut steak that was completely flavorless. The managers response was "nobody else has complained!" We didn't ask for the items to be removed from our check and they made no offer of apology. We tipped 20 percent and left--I took my friend to Nias so that she could actually EAT! Please note--we are not new to Nightwood. I have hosted several clients there. I won't risk anyone else I hosting having this experience again."

  • "Nightwood is always going to stick out in my mind. My girlfriend and I went there to celebrate our anniversary and found the place to be wonderful. We live nearby and know the local bar, Skylark, well enough and have always wanted to stop in here. When we got in, the decor was simple but classic, and a lot of wood, very charming though. The food was nothing short of amazing. We started with the crispy pig ears, which oddly but deliciously tasted like caramel popcorn, and the fried squid with a spicy aioli. Again, so delicious! Our mains were the Nightwood burger (I'm a bit of a burger-aholic) and the Manila clams with a rabbit ragu and house-made noodles. For dessert we had a mascarpone cheesecake and a mousse. So delicious and awesome!"

  • "Pig ear appetizer was sitting out for a while before being brought to our table. Overly crunch, cold, and just brushed with sweet glaze before we ate them. Veal shortrib casoncelli was 6 small pieces of stuffed pasta, each the size of a quarter on a huge white plate for $18, which is $3 per quarter-sized piece of pasta. Overpriced for the portion. Bottle of wine was spilled on the table, on the bottle and label, and wine glass while being poured. It wasn't wiped down or cleaned for more than 10 minutes so I cleaned myself. Main courses (top sirloin and striped bass) were a bit overcooked and extremely over-seasoned with salt. One of the saltiest dishes I've ever had. Manager didn't discount anything at the end of meal after complaining."

  • "Dependably outstanding food with a menu that always changes is one reason why I keep coming back here. However is in charge of selecting the music is doing a fantastic job as well. One of the best places in Chicago for brunch."

  • "After several attempts to make it down here, my husband and I were finally able to try this place over the weekend and it was well worth the wait! Cocktails, food, service and atmosphere were all fantastic. We tried the foie gras & ricotta ravioli to start. Both were very good, but the ravioli stood out and was definitely a favorite of ours. For entrees I had the trout and my husband had their signature burger. You cannot go wrong with selections from their wood fire grill. Both were packed full of flavor and left us wanting more so we tried the apple bread pudding for dessert. Bread pudding is a pretty basic dessert, but what set theirs apart was the rosemary ice cream...amazing! We will definitely be visiting Nightwood again."

  • "I enjoyed everything I experienced at Nightwood from the appetizers to the dessert and the drinks. The waitress was professional but friendly and to sit at the "kitchen counter" was the best idea ever! I highly recommend going to this restaurant. It will become one of my favorites and staples in rotation."

  • "Food was good, no record of our reservation, had to wait 20 minutes for a table, hostess not apologetic, water under the table we had to ask to have cleaned up, a bit noisey"

  • "I've been to Nightwood several times and have had great experiences before, but when I took a friend last week, things turned strange. Our waitress, Sarah, was pleasant when I first arrived and was waiting on my friend to join me. Once it was time to order, it's as though her mean twin sister showed up. When she left the table, my friend and I looked at each other in shock. She had an attitude when I asked her if they could not put sunflower seeds on my salad. Not sure why that made her turn but turn she did. It only got worse from there. She left us sitting there for 45 minutes (we timed it) after we were done eating and we actually had to get up and ask someone for our bill. She never returned. I can't go back now which makes me sad."

  • "First off the ambience is nothing to write home about so my initial thought was, okay the food better really be the star. The food was good, not great, and for the cost, I could think of plenty of better options. My biggest complaint overall though was the seating layout. The seats were so close to each other it might as well be communal seating. Very difficult to have a conversation with the person across the table when you have someone seated 3 inches next to you. It was even difficult to maneuver around the for the staff because of everyone being on top of each other. I understand that they want to pack as many people in the restaurant but its pushing it to another level of ridiculousness and I would never return because of it."

  • "Excellent service and good food. However, the chairs are hard, there is no valet parking (only an issue with all this snow on the ground as there is street parking) and I didn't need slightly too loud David Bowie on a weekday evening. Not a bad overall vibe though, and If you are under 35 I suspect you will love it..."

  • "The meal was terrific and the restaurant is very attractive. The Wisconsin trout was incredible- just perfect- and the tortilla with it delicious. The fried squid and oyster and bacon chowder were excellent. The desserts were also excellent and the wine choices were great. It was a really out stampeding meal."

  • "After multiple visits, this restaurant never gets stale or predictable (except in it's vision and execution). They retain a number of of customer favorites, but always bring something new, fresh and occasionally experimental to the menu. Service remains friendly, enthusiastic and helpful. Will keep coming back."

  • "I decided to try out Nightwood having read a review from a food blog I'd been following 'What's for Dinner' and I wasn't disappointed. I was holidaying in Chicago with my best friend, I'm from London she's from Sweden. We didn't want to eat downtown where we were staying, we wanted to eat where locals ate. The menu fulfilled both the needs of my friend who was craving a burger for dinner and my own as I was looking to explore new taste sensations, so the pigs ears for starters was certainly calling my name. The entire evening was a joy, attentive service, beautiful ambiance and mouth watering food. If I ever find myself in Chicago in the future I'll certainly be paying a return visit."

  • "Dinner at Nightwood was terrific. All you would expect from a downtown restaurant but right in our neighborhood !"

  • "The coffered ceiling, the A. Jacobsen-inspired chairs, the mixed toffee tones, the chords of wood stacked between the wine bottles, the gorgeous floor tiles in the bathroom: the Nightwood is beautifully conceived (although I did wonder slightly at the apparently unironic photograph of a bear in one corner). The serving team was entirely white men with their hipster button-ups untucked and all the low-key ease and confidence that comes with being, um, white, male and bearded. Conceptually, the food was engaging: full of tasty innovations, mostly locally sourced to make you feel good about yourself as you ate. But none of the flavors popped particularly; we weren't wowed. Quiet, intellectual, tasty food is perhaps how I'd describe our meal."

  • "We went to Nightwood for restaurant week, and since there were two of us we were able to try everything on their restaurant week menu. We loved every single bite of all right dishes! The cocktails were unique and delicious too. We can't wait to go back!"

  • "Made reservations over Restaurant Week based on positive reviews. Ordered Restaurant Week 4 course meal without wine. Everything was excellent, foods that are recognizeable but prepared with extraordinary taste. Ample servings. I did not leave hungey. No gimmicky presentations, thank goodness. Probably the best polenta I ever had, creamy and rich. There was nothing I disliked and will return to try their regular menu. Neighborhood is strange, not much around and appears a bit sketchy but close to China Town for walking before or after dinner. Pleasant ambience inside, earth colors. My only complaint was the music, heavy rock that sounded like it was coming from an old tinny radio. Did not fit the atmosphere."

  • "Absolutely delicious food...there were very odd combinations of flavors that worked well together for the most part. I was with a large party and we were not rushed at all, but I realized that our dinner lasted just shy of 3 hours! Would have probably liked it to have moved a little faster. I would absolutely 100% recommend this restaurant. Only thing I really wish were different about the restaurant would be a valet option. We had to park on the street a few blocks down where it wasn't well plowed."

  • "I have been to Nightwood 4 times now. The food is delicious, imaginative, and innovative. I would like to see them offer a few sides. We were still hungry after ordering the fried squid appetizer to share and the trout and sturgeon entrees; both which were fantastic. We ordered the fries--oh so good that are usually served with the famous two patty cheeseburger. The fries satisfied us. The desserts were a delight. I love the Cheezeits sprinkled in with the apple bread pudding and ice cream accompaniment. Nightwood is a comfortable, personable place to dine with excellent service. We have always found free parking and the expressway is right there making it really accessible from all points."

  • "We came here during restaurant week but ordered off the main menu. Fiance and I started off with two glasses of wine, both of which were "meh". He ordered another glass later on but again, "meh". Despite the lengthy and interesting wine list, we were both underwhelmed by our choices. For dinner, my fiance ordered the sirloin. Steak was cooked beautifully with a lot of flavor, but he almost lost his bonding when he bit into some uncooked farro underneath. I ordered the sturgeon. I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but there was something about it that didn't sit well with me. Dessert was apple bread pudding (amazing) and brioche donuts (again, meh). This place didn't live up to the hype, but we'd consider returning."
