A word from Nightwood
Welcome to Nightwood. Jason Hammel and Amalea Tshilds, owners of Logan Square's Lula Cafe, invite you to join us in Pilsen -- at our open kitchen, on our patio, in our wine room, with the warmth and fragrance of applewood scenting the air.

We are a farm to table restaurant, featuring local produce and sustainably sourced meats and fish on an ever-changing, handwritten menu.

Spit roasted chicken, whole slow cooked pork, squash grilled over the open flame, a simple bowl of perfect fruit and sorbet. Hand in hand with the best farmers and craftspeople of the midwest, we cook with bold simplicity and care. We are looking forward to seeing you soon.

Diner Reviews
  • "4 adults celebrating 2 wedding anniversaries and 3 of us had the cheeseburger! The french fries were great but, come on, we can afford more than the burger and yet that's what 3 out of 4 thought would be the tastiest thing on the menu. My husband had the steak and was disappointed with the size. Too small and served with a small potato quartered. At least add an attractive veggie. Cherry pie was delicious! We have eaten at Nightwood before and were happier with the choices and tastes during the winter."

  • "I had been hearing about Nightwood for quite some time and was finally able to experience it. I recommend visiting it during the week, I'm sure it's impossible to get in on the weekends. We went Tuesday evening, early reservation at 6:00. We were the first table but it quickly started to fill up. The service was very attentive and not rushed at all (I think that was because it was Tuesday and people were not waiting for tables). Unfortunately the temperature was quite cool for July, otherwise we would have loved to to sit on their patio, beautiful! I loved the small menu with local selections. A little heavy handed on the olive oil, but that may have been our menu selections. Look forward to a return visit."

  • "Arrived on time for our 8:45p reservation for a party of 4 and were seated right away. Started with a bottle of rose, the white gazpacho which was amazing, grilled octopus which had delicious intense flavor, and a pasta with morels- good. The main courses were also all excellent- the sea bass with morels, squash blossom, & roe; duck with sour cherries; and a melange of summer vegetables, each cooked differently and in a way to bring out the maximum flavor & character. Even though we were satisfyingly full, we topped off the meal with dessert- a black berry tart and a slice of cherry chocolate pie. Food and service were great. Our server was well-informed, pleasant and helpful in navigating the menu for a guest with a gluten allergy."

  • "We had a wonderful experience at Knightwood! The place is a gem and the outdoor seating was trendy, yet comfortable. The service overall was great and we appreciated our server's (Mark) suggestions. We enjoyed a bottle of wine, and chose from a pretty extensive list...we had some help from Mark! :) We shared two entrees...the Trout was OK, not amazing...a little too fishy for me. The beef was so good that I can't wait to go back to order it again! The after dinner treats were my favorite...get the cookies in addition to any other treats on the dessert menu, you won't be disappointed!!"

  • "Everything about the evening was great.....from the lovely patio, to our server, fresh delicious food, and fairly priced wine list."

  • "Nightwood was a great experience. The food was delicious - especially the green garlic agnolotti - and the service was pretty good as well. Other than the agnolotti, every dish was very good but not spectacular. Nothing was anywhere near bad, but nothing made me reconsider the way I look at food. The agnolotti and black raspberry/black sesame dessert both came close, however. Nice wine, knowledgeable service, would definitely go again. Nicely done!"

  • "I’d been looking forward to trying Nightwood for some time based on reviews and feedback from friends. Unfortunately, my experience was not so good. Maybe it was the chef’s night off? The menu was promising, with innovative combinations and seemingly good ingredients. However, some things didn’t work so well -- and all were way over-salted. We were wondering if no one actually tasted things in the kitchen, or if they just salt everything with wild abandon (as has been the case with a couple of other seemingly conscientious farm-to-table restaurants around town). Whatever -- at these prices, I expect more care in seasoning. I’m in no hurry to return."

  • "Our daughter and her fiancé recommended Nightwood as one of their favorite Sunday brunch choices. Our dining experience was everything they promised it would be. Excellent service amd delicious food. We will gladly return in the future and would most certainly recommend the restaurant to friends. The donuts and the tots were simply delicious!"

  • "Nightwood is a true gem. I have been twice for brunch and it's been amazing each time; can't wait to try dinner. Always get the doughnuts (even though they're $5 each), and trust your server to know what's best on the current menu. It changes often, which is good because you can always try something new, but bad if you wanted to go back for the specific purpose of eating a much loved entree again. Do yourself a favor and go now!!"

  • "My friend and I went here for dinner and it was worth the cab ride to and from our hotel. Food was excellent, service was great..... A true gem!"

  • "Phenomenal steak, quality wine list, and a great atmosphere for a special occasion. The restaurant was a little too noisy at times and the portions could have been more generous."

  • "I wanted to love nightwood and almost did/do. The food was fantastic but the service was spotty at best. We were seated for almost 20 minutes before our server came by (and that was only after we asked the manager) and it was hit or miss from then on- long gaps between table visits. The guy refilling the water was spot on though! And the food really was tasty. Just not sure I'd go back because the service left a bad taste..."

  • "Enjoyed the whole experience. Glad we sit outside. Seemed pretty noisy inside"

  • "Wonderful. Anything else is superfluous. It is rare to find this combination of terrific, surprising food; excellent service; comfortable atmosphere (no one interrupting poor diners to "explain" the food and dictate how it is to be eaten); and interesting surroundings. I only wish Nightwood was OUR neighborhood hot spot."

  • "I love this place: the care and thoughtfulness put into the delicious and interesting food, the choice of drinks, the atmosphere, and the good service. The pricing is reasonable. It's a little hard to get to without a car, but free parking is easy to find. I've gone by myself to eat breakfast at the kitchen bar. I've gone with just one other person to catch up over dinner and to celebrate her birthday (though she didn't know that until the cake came out). I've gone with family and friends as a group of four. And I've gone with a group of 7, but that was probably too big for this place because I couldn't really have a conservation with the people on the other side of the table. Still, I think it's an all around excellent experience."

  • "The food is first class. The duck is a special dish. And we especially liked the way the serving staff paced our dinner without even asking."

  • "Thanks for a wonderful evening, with delicious food, excellent service, and a really good vibe overall. I was joking with the bartender that one can judge a bar by its Manhattan, and Nightwood's was perfect. One of the best. Mulveneys here in Sacramento has a great one, and yours ranks with theirs. Thanks again, Nightwood!"

  • "The food continues to be excellent, creative, but not gimmicky. Nightwood is an intimate, comfortable space where on can enjoy food and company."

  • "The food at Nightwood never disappoints, and while it's usually more of a date-night choice, they are very accommodating to small children, including my 3-year-old, when we go for brunch or a very early dinner. One of our favorite spots, and the perfect choice for a "fancy" Father's Day brunch."

  • "Great food, friendly service and good drinks. We will certainly be back again. Worth the month wait to get in!"

  • "Was it an off night? My food was barely lukewarm ( but delicious ) and the service was friendly but slow, though we had told the waiter we had to be someplace. "

  • "Ambience was great! Food was phenomenal! Had the pig ears for appetizer and fried crab... For entree we went with the Steak.. Great choice. All the dishes looked amazing. The only negative- My wife and I were celebrating our 10th yr wedding anniversary. At time of reservation, under special request, we wrote "celebrating our 10th yr anniversary". Well,we were a little disappointed not to have this acknowledged. Not that we wanted something free but when we've celebrated in the passed other establishment have greeted with Happy Anniversary welcome or any other way to make it an even more special night at their restaurant! "

  • "After all the great things I had heard about this place, I was overall pretty unhappy. Though the menu was creative and eclectic, none of that stuff matters when it comes right down to the taste. The food was very bland and the portions were ridiculously small. We had to go eat again after the dinner. And we're both pretty slim people with normal appetites. Service was "eh, ok." Plenty of refills on our water. Wouldn't go again. "

  • "The Duck entree was wonderful, nicely prepared. The location is somewhat difficult to get to during rush hour."

  • "Although we had brunch there several times in the past, this was our first time there for dinner. We found it to be just as great as our previous visits. The food is wonderful. It is creative and we tried a few things we had never had before. We were a party of four. Our son and his wife are foodies and love this place. The starters were unusual and extremely tasty. My daughter in law and I shared the duck and the chicken dishes. Both were very good. The wait staff and host were very attentive and even gave us complimentary appetizers. All in all, it was a great night out and we would highly recommend it. "

  • "We went to Nightwood for my wife's birthday. The food was very excellent, as was the service. Everything we had was a wonderful mix of flavors and we will definately be going there again sometime. We started with a couple of signature cocktails and the pate, then I had the duck and she had the lake trout. Desert was the mouse and the rhubarb pie."

  • "Second time at this restaurant. Food is very good, wine was even better. This time I ordered the trout which was cooked well but not the tastiest fish dish I have had. Having to take a cab both ways added to the overall bill. Next time in Chicago will try other place. Ambiance and service are great. The hamburger my friend had was great. Best French fries ever. Fabulous white French wine from Gascogne region. Desserts were delicious- rhubarb pie and a chocolate flour less one."

  • "Had just dessert here the first time, which was excellent. Came back for dinner--it was good but I think I'll get a different entree next time. Love the endless sparkling water. Awesome ambience."

  • "More often than not, experimental recipes from prominent chefs leave me cold. When the experiment is complete, I still want to enjoy the result. It is just food! Here the food is unusual but still it is tasty! Yeah!"

  • "Great date nite place. Food and service good. Nothing mind blowing. Laid back. Patio sweet."
    Dined on 5/23/2014
  • "We were a group of five and found the food to be very well-prepared and tasty, but the portion size of a couple of the starters was so small that we laughed out loud when the server put them on the table. She had recommended a pasta starter to share, and we literally each got one bite. Other than that rather bizarre situation we had a very nice dinner."
    Dined on 5/22/2014
  • "Nightwood was cozy, eclectic, and perfect for a date night. The food and service were both excellent. Will certainly dine there again!"

  • "This place is amazing! My top choice for brunch in Chicago hands down. The bloody mary is to die for."
    Dined on 5/18/2014
  • "I had not been to Nightwood prior to the chef leaving, so I cannot compare. The ambiance and service were fantastic, but all the food we ate was just mediocre. For example, the softshell crab was soggy and overdressed. The short rib pasta appetizer lacked a lot of flavor and sauce. Overall, disappointing especially for the price point. "

  • "Nightwood is fantastic. It doesn't try to hard, it's just cool. The people are friendly and the food is really worth it. Get the pigs ears to start, they were the highlight. The punch for two is delicious and perfect for a couple. Both entrees were very tasty, but the trout was the real winner. Great vibe and great food, do it. "

  • "We live in the neighborhood and have been wanting to try Nightwood for a long time. We finally went last week and has such high hopes! I knew based on reviews that the food was overpriced, but I was shocked to learn how much so. The pig ears were so hard we could barely bite through them. The pasta appetizer was delicious, but the serving size was a joke. The chicken with chickpeas was so over-seasoned we couldn't finish it. The bass was cooked perfectly, but the "crispy potatoes" on the side turned out to be 2 round potato chips (seriously?!). We left hungry and $120 poorer. Will definitely not be going back. There are much better restaurants in the are that are worth the money."

  • "I enjoyed the room, the service, the drinks and the food at Nightwood. I am all about farm to table local food (if possible) and felt Nightwood exceeded my expectations. It was my first trip to the Pilsen neighborhood (this is a bit off from the central Pilsen hood) but I plan to go back. Living in Chicago one often tends to stick to a few close neighborhoods but I have found a new gem to return to!"
