Diner Reviews
  • "I can't wait to go back to Nico Osteria this fall or winter. Why? Our first visit tasted just like summer--light, fresh, bursting with summer ingredients--and I want to see how the menu changes with the season. My husband and I visited for our anniversary. We were treated to complimentary glasses of a lovely Prosecco, and the rest of the service was attentive and welcoming as well. The food was outstanding. We shared a tomato and crab salad, a grilled octopus fettunta, a pasta, and a whole black bass. We loved it all, but the fettunta and bass were the standouts. This is not an inexpensive evening--the bass alone was about $50--but it is worth it for a splurge. Coffee comes with complimentary sweets-they were delicious, too."

  • "We had the BEST meal here--everything we ordered was delectable! Equally importantly, the service was top-notch. The pasta we ordered arrived with a bit of a delay following the some of the other dishes. We were having such a great time that we hardly noticed, but our waitress apologized for the wait and brought over a complimentary glass of wine for my friend and me. It's one thing to react to slow service or a potentially poor experience by doing something like that, but I really appreciated the staff's proactive approach to the situation. I can't wait to go back and try more of the dishes!"

  • "Great outdoor dining space. Gracious front end staff, waiter knew the menu and explained process well. Food was tastey, original and fun to share."

  • "Our reservation was honored but the first two tables they tried to give us were unsatisfactory. One just outside the kitchen, the other in a very dark unlit outside spot. We picked the next table ourselves and the accomodated. The food was ok to very good with two outstanding dishes, the octopus and seafood stew. Otherwise only ok and very overpriced. The service staff was very attentive but the waitress was just fair. Better dining is surely available in this great town."

  • "The meal at Nico was one of my top ten dining experiences of all time, the kind that had my husband and I embarrassing ourselves by moaning out loud between bites. Sharing several plates, we began with Kampachi crudo that was perfectly composed with tiny potato crisps and mâché. Next we had an endive salad that I never had a bite of because I couldn't tear myself away from the heirloom tomato salad with fresh crab meat. Lastly, we shared a fresh pasta with pesto and shrimp that was outstanding-we barely had room for the eggplant and mozzarella side dish and no room for the gorgeous dessert menu-even though it was my birthday!"

  • "really good food - really expensive. $15+ for an oversized brushchetta - really? $20 for a few delicious bites of sashima/crudo - good, but not worth it. the homemade pasta and salt-baked branzino were really the stars of the evening. great bread, too."

  • "The food was amazing original, beautifully prepared and nearly perfect (my Halibut was a bit overcooked and a tad dry - only complaint). The squid-ink pasta was astounding and the crudi were a revelation. However it is a place to be seen and so the tables are crammed together. It's impossible to have a conversation without being overheard. And when one's food comes the couples on both sides discuss your choices. I understand expensive real estate, but it's just not conducive to fine dining. I would go again in a minute if I could have one of the booths or tables - but at these prices, won't return to be crammed into the middle row with my shoulders nearly touching a stranger. Noise level = energetic (which means very loud)."

  • "To us, it's a neighborhood gem. The food is creative, fantastic. Decor is wonderful, service excellent. I had the prix fixe for lunch, fabulous. Enough for two or three. We've been for dinner, again, lovely. For dinner, two of us, and tables are a bit close! Yes, we will return regularly, but with 3 or 4 people so we get a table by the window, or outside!"

  • "We ate lunch at Nico's this week after our concierge recommended it to us. The two of us split a omato heirloom salad with an solive oil and hummus dressing followed by a tagiatellabolognese and a hanger steak. Food was inventive, had high quality ingredients and was prepared and served well. Service was efficient and friendly."

  • "Our waiter was knowledgeable and helpful. He suggested a wine that was lovely. Later, after finishing one glass when I asked for just half a glass he poured half a glass. How nice. We shared an Endive salad, refreshing. Spaghetti (pasta made in-house) with Lobster, delicious! Veal Meatballs, tasty. We each had a different flavor of gelato. A light flavorful treat. A Surprise before we left, a few Candies on a tray. We felt cared for."

  • "Great new spot right in the heart of Rush Street. Excellent service, great food and a lively outdoor area. If you don't mind the street activity then you will be ok eating outside. The inside seems a bit "crowded" with the tables being tightly placed but very nicely done. The food is excellent and portions can be shared. Our waiter David was excellent!"

  • "Everything from and including the bread to dessert was wonderful. It was the best dining experience I have had for a long time. Quite memorable especially those desserts! Wait staff was tremendous. It is on the top of my best restaurants list."

  • "This may have been the best overall dining experience we have ever had. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, everything was absolutely excellent. The decor is modern and interesting, but also warm and inviting. We were warmly greeted at the door, seated immediately and had water and delicious bread moments later. Our server Jamie was, plain and simple, the best server we have ever had at any restaurant anywhere in the world. She was warm and friendly, attentive without being pushy and had excellent suggestions on the menu and the wine list. Oh, and the food....marvelous. From appetizers through dessert, everything was just terrific. We could not have been happier with our visit, and we can't wait to come back."

  • "The best restaurant in Chicago right now. The menu is so interesting, the food is spectacular and the vibe is cool."

  • "The dinner at Nico was outstanding - we had the moon shoal oysters, the sea robin (never had seen it on a menu before), the heirloom tomato / crab salad (dressing and blend of flavors was wonderful), the goat cheese caramelle and the garganelli. The caramelle was fresh, vibrant with the orange, basil, pasta and shrimp. The garganelli were very light, bow shaped filled pasta. It was one of the best meals we have had this summer and we were able to be on their sidwalk patio - a lovely evening."

  • "Enjoyed a leisurely lunch on a gorgeous day in downtown Chicago. Lobster BLT and Crab Salad were tasty and presented well. Service was outstanding until the food critics/celebrities at the adjacent table left. I think all the waitstaff disappeared at the same time! Ordered cheese for dessert and asked the busser for a glass of wine, but server didn't show up again until the cheese was gone."

  • "I did a lot of research before our recent trip to Chicago and am very glad that I did. Nico Osteria kept coming up as a must try and highly recommended. We ate at several restaurant during our stay and this was by far the best. The oysters were the best I ever had and next time I will probably try them with the caviar. The big eye tuna was simply fresh and amazing the way it was dressed. I had the monkfish pasta and my husband had the lobster spaghetti. The bread was very good also (not the best ever but still very good). Dessert was absolutely wonderful too, we had the chocolate bonnet and then our waitress brought us a complimentary dessert that had 2 pieces of chocolate and some type of jellied square."

  • "The crudos are amazing, get a fentuntta - so delicious - pastas are great. All the food is wonderful. And the service is really really good. It's just so bloody expensive.....It's really fun to sit at the bar and watch the crudo staff prepare each dish with such precision."

  • "We absolutely loved this restaurant and the whole experience. I'm a huge fan of rustic Italian food and seafood, so this restaurant hit all the sweet spots for me. Sat outside on a gorgeous Chicago summer evening. Waitress was knowledgeable, professional, and friendly. Food was outstanding. Best whole roasted branzino I've ever had, simply prepared with aged balsamic, torn basil and heirloom tomatoes. We had several courses and loved everything we tried. Dinner with a bottle of wine and two cocktails was about $280. While it's a lot of money, we felt it a fair price for the overall experience and deliciousness of the meal."

  • "Every morsel of food brought to table was outstanding. Waiter was knowledgeable and Attentive without being intrusive. I highly recommend if your bank account can handle it. Definitely will return for a special occasion. Great vibe Warning: I ordered the sole which was priced per pound. Mine weighed in at well over A pound. Ask the waiter for a smaller one! Delish"

  • "my second time at this place food is great but ask your server for help!! I saw ingrediients listed and thought that was the comprehensive list but noooo that is the flavor progile, the title of the dishes (in Italian) are the main ingredients!!"

  • "We enjoyed dining with another couple for brunch at Nico. We started out with the pastry platter (bring me more condiments, please!!), some excellent tasting (and shucked) oysters, and drinks. The entrees we shared were the bistecco, scrambled eggs, spaghetti dish, and one more that slips my memory. The presentation and flavors were paired well. Nico does a fine job of showcasing dishes that won't scare the average Joe but nudge a person toward new boundaries. The only critiques I give are about the slightly better than average tasting coffee and the very poor service on drink pours. I don't think we were ever served a refill without a slosh of liquid spilling on the table or saucer."

  • "I was expecting the restaurant to be packed - we went there on a Friday night and it was showing nearly completely booked out on Opentable. When we arrived, the place was half empty (might be because people were using their very large outdoor seating area) I find the service at Paul Kahan restaurants to be attentive, but rather cold and aloof at the same time. Nico Osteria was no exception. It started with a bad Manhattan and a waitress that was rather awkward with us, but fortunately went uphill from there. The food was outstanding as we had hoped. We had the Baccala Mantecato, halibut, and Lobster Spaghetti. For dessert, we had the burnt honey gelato. It was so good, we had a second order. Overall, a very nice addition to the Gold Coast."

  • "WOW! I can't describe how amazing this restaurant is. A friend recommended me this restaurant while I was visiting Chicago and since i got back from my holidays, all I keep thinking about is Nico. Their food is mouth watering. My friends and I ordered almost everything on the menu and nothing dissapointed me. I am a huge foodie so to say that I had the best experience ever means this restaurants is #1 on my list. There is a reason for me to return to Chicago since there"s nothing like this in my home city in Canada. Great job Nico Osteria! Thanks for an amazing experience."

  • "...a relaxing late afternoon indulging in nothing but crudo and fettunta (flatbreads). We've sampled entries from the entire menu and encourage you to do the same - Nico's is an exquisite experience unburdened by pretension. While Nico's offers the "scene" - the heart of Nico's lies in the honest ingredients, passionate cooking and superlative, engaging service. Nico's has soul."

  • "Great food, great service, worst hostess ever! Extremely creative menu with unusual combinations of flavors. Food beautifully plated."

  • "We enjoyed the food, but the atmosphere was not what we expected. We ended up at a table in a row of tables that ran across the middle of the restaurant. The other tables were about 3 inches away on each side of us, which made it very difficult to hear each other across the table. It was disappointing because we had made the reservation months ago, and specified that it was our anniversary. Not only did they not acknowledge that it was our anniversary (a table right by us got a special dessert with a candle!), but we were at one of the worst tables in the restaurant. As for food, what we ate was good, but while I understand that they order their fish fresh and things can run out, at 8:30 they were out of 2 different starters we picked."
    Dined on 7/26/2014
  • "We asked our server to space out our courses which worked OK until they brought the entree well before we were finished the our mussels. Not the end of the world as the mussels were mediocre at best. The crudo, heirloom tomato salad and black bass, however, all were excellent. On a different subject, we didn't quite understand all the people who looked like they had just come from the beach."
    Dined on 7/26/2014
  • "They sat us 30 min after our actual reservation time and initially after the 30 minute wait, tried to seat us in the bar. In hindsight, the bar table might of been quieter with more space. The server did not come by for 15 minutes. Food was good but not worth having to wait with a reservation. The server forgot a side dish but we decided it was not even worth it to ask."

  • "We expected more from Nico given the reviews and menu options. It did not meet our expectations when it came to the main dishes. The appetizers like crudo and octopus were delicious but the pasta and fish fell way short. First of the squid ink pasta was not fresh and lacked any flavor. Second the black bass we ordered as the main dish was over salted. Given the price point of the restaurant higher quality was expected."

  • "One of the better meals we have had in Chicago. From the appetizer to desert. Soft shell crab with ricotta was phenomenal. Ricotta did not over power the delicate crab. The Bronzino was accented just right with tomatoes, balsamic and basil. Lobster spaghetti was heavier but you got to love fresh pasta."

  • "I was in Chicago on business and my spouse flew out to spend a couple of days in Chicago. He made a number of dinner reservations and Nico Osteria was the best of all the places we ate. We had a couple of great cocktails to start and the food was impeccably prepared and presented. We decided to share the 5 dishes we ordered and all but one was superlative. We were a little disappointed in the "special" spaghetti with Lobster. Despite that, I would give Nico O my highest rating."
