Diner Reviews
  • "First time at Nice Osteria. Looked rather charming and somewhat eclectic however, they tried to seat us at a counter facing the kitchen. Though the hostess inferred we were privileged to be seated at this spot, we found it to be loud, detached, and inconvenient when speaking with our wait person who was always behind us. Didn't carry the commonly found liquors we prefer, so we left without dining. Not a very good experience from our perspective."

  • "Food and atmosphere were great for a special evening. It's a bit pricey, but interesting combinations. Service could have been a bit more attentive but a nice menu."

  • "the excellent food was delicious with distinct harmonious and subtle flavors. we shared the hamachi to start and progressed to the crab salad with fava puree base - (my personal favorite from the meal) an finished with the salmon with tarragon sauce. every dish had fabulous flavors and sophisticated blending. This meal made me miss my favorite restaurant in Milan. I rated the service slightly lower for 2 reasons - poor seating selection initially (we were reseated graciously) and neglect to receive the house bread. At the table our server was knowledgeable and friendly and made the dining experience overall a true pleasure."

  • "Not just the best restaurant in the Rush Street area, this place I think seems to actually aspire to greatness. And right now they are achieving it. The freshest fish, unique and delicious preparations of salads, small and larger plates and even sides. And one of the very best, if not the best Pastry Chef and desserts in Chicago. I have been here 3 times and each time I have been blown away by the quality and taste of every item."

  • "We had to wait 30 minutes to be seated, which now seems to be standard practice in the restaurant business. It's a totally obvious and unethical way of pushing up profit margins by encouraging guests to buy $25 worth of drinks that they don't really want. The tables were too close together as well, which means I had to listen to my neighbors' conversations for the duration of my meal (and they had to listen to mine). While the food was good, it was not worth the aggravation of the wait and the cramped space. Thumbs down."

  • "Make no mistake; Nico is not Spiaggia 1.0 or anything like it. What it is then is a very good osteria-style Italian restaurant. It does not remind one of being in Italia until you taste the food. Authentic if not unique Italian stylings: antipasti, salade, pecse, pasta etc. and so one. While the emphasis is seafood, there are choices which make this menu pretty flexible for all different diners. The highly touted lobster spaghetti was probably worth the $48 mp considering the size of the whole Maine lobster used. The black ink pasta was every bit as tasty, and at about half the cost. The bar looks like a great place to meet and greet, and sample from small plates. Next time."

  • "Went for brunch on a Saturday and was able to sit outside. Great location and service but the food left a little more to be desired. Given the seafood specialty, we had the oysters as a starter. Extremely salty and below average. Was expecting much more. Also ordered the carbonara which was pretty good. Went in with high expectations which weren't met."

  • "We had lunch at Nico Osteria(on July 4th) so that it might not be a typical day. Everything about it was superb. The food was fresh, well prepared, interesting and delicious. The service was perfect. Waiter, Andre, was terrific, friendly, had good suggestions and you could tell he was very happy to work there. The room was quiet..we chose to eat inside, but the out door tables were quite busy. The space is understated and very comfortable. We will return often!"

  • "This was my return visit. Food was excellent as it was the previous time. Service was spotty and we had to ask for things like clean cutlery several times, and had to stop them from taking away dishes and drinks before we were finished. Maybe a bad day with reduced staff right before the July 4th holiday."

  • "light and delicious aps, quality fish and creatively prepared and plated. best Bronzino ever! nick torte to end meal was wonderful! found the prices to be high - comparatively to similar restaurants."

  • "gorgeous interior and beautiful design. food was very good, tables a bit tight as there is a lot of activity. Only complaint was that we arrived early to sit at the bar and catch up/have drinks - and when we arrived we checked in but told the hostess we had come early for a drink. Three times they came to us and tried to seat us early. it was annoying ."

  • "a dining experience worth the wait for a reservation .... excellent .. a gem in Chicago!"

  • "We made reservations here a month in advance AND it was recommended by our Concierge. Great appetizer with shredded Brussels sprouts in grilled and herbed bread. Spaghetti with lobster was atrocious. Mushy, old, bad red sauce. We sent the whole plate back bc we could not even chew it. Then we were served the (three)!) veal meatballs. Looked great but alas, they were too soft and when we looked inside one, raw snd bad smelling. Server was in attentive and not helpful. Schmoozing with the other tables but never approached our table. Finslly, Zach the manger came and explained thst they're meant to be that way bc of a "secret" recipe. What?? He didn't want us to pay for anything and we left hungry and miserable."

  • "7th time in to dine. It is my personal favorite spot in the city - Whether dining solo, entertaining guests or as a recommendation to others. Delicious."

  • "Had a 9pm reservation for dinner with a friend visiting from Singapore for 40th birthday - requested a nice table but were seated at the last table by the kitchen felt like everyone was walking over us - requested a table elsewhere but were told those were for larger parties therefore we sat outside but it was a cold night - so we ended up leaving right after dinner because we were freezing. Food was expensive and nothing special and the service was poor. Would not go back there."

  • "I have been anxiously waiting to try this place for a while and it lived up to all my expectations. Just be aware, it is a very popular new"er" spot and we were unable to get a more traditional dinner reservation between 6:30-8:30 any day of the week for weeks, so we ended up settling for a 9:00 reservation to get in sooner. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and helpful delivering a bottle of wine similar to the one we requested that was sold out, giving helpgul tips on the menu and checking in regularly. The food was outstanding. Never have I tasted a dish that was nearly as good as my grandma's Christmas fish gravy spaghetti but the lobster spaghetti was damn close. Just the smell brought me back... kudos. We'll be back for more."

  • "The entire meal was one delicious bite after another. Truly wonderful. But I called ahead to say it was a birthday and we got seated at a tiny table shoved up against the wall. The chairs were uncomfortable. Overall, I just feel like the atmosphere feels a little too casual for a $300/2 ppl meal. I will be back, but not for all four courses. Just some delicious pasta or crudo at the bar."
    Dined on 6/23/2014
  • "I wondered what all the hype was around this restaurant. The chairs were so uncomfortable we had to switch to a bar booth. The menu was weird. The cocktails were sour and the food was really awful. I have no idea why this restaurant is getting so much hype, but it is. I thought it was also ridiculous that everything was either burnt (grilled calamari) or raw. I think the restaurant and bar are pretty and our service was good."

  • "We enjoyed the best raw fish dish ever. I believe it was Tai. The stuffed pappardelle was amazing. While I almost never order steak out, the aged rib eye was the most flavorful I've had in years. A definite do over"

  • "Beautiful/Chic room, delicious food, knowledgeable and thoughtful service make Nico a wonderful new addition to Chicago's dining scene."

  • "Food was fine (pasta and clam sauce for me), but they must've handmade the pasta to order bc it took a long time. For app they didn't have the crudo I wanted bc they ran out. Waitress forgot my glass of wine with lunch, and didn't come by until after I was almost done to check in with me, waitress was very chatty with other tables instead of making sure I had everything I'd ordered.. Oh well. I tipped normally because the busboys were on point and I didn't think they should suffer."

  • "Went to Nico on a Wednesday nite early. Sat inside by the window. 4 of us, 2 out of towners. Food was great and different. The restaurant filled up but you could still hear each other. Little on the pricey side even for the city but at least the food was delicious. We'll go back."

  • "We entertained a couple visiting from France. The entire evening was perfect. Our waitress Ashley was so knowledgable of the food and wine She made it easy for us to navigate through the shared menu and wine list. The food plates arrived with perfect timing for the four courses, quick but not rushed."

  • "Underwhelming. Food decent. The best thing we had was raw hamachi. We had lobster spaghetti and there was 2 small pieces of lobster."

  • "I have eaten dinner, brunch and breakfast at Nico's since the restaurant opened a few months ago and each time I have had a very pleasant dining experience. The food is exquisite and the service is outstanding. I would definitely recommend this restaurant."

  • "Perhaps we came at the wrong time for Sunday -- the end of Brunch and before Supper -- but the service was simply poor. Our first server lady was nice but then it switched to a guy who may have been new. Food's OK but not as reviewed in journals."

  • "This restaurant had it all, great food, cool vibe, wonderful service, meticulously prepared tasteful food. I'd recommend it highly!"

  • "Beef tongue and lobster for brunch? Don't mind if I do! Although not a cheap brunch ($80 for 2), Nico provides a delicious gourmet experience in a beautiful location, with lots of people-watching opportunities. Beef tongue in brodo is incredibly tender, comes in a flavorful broth, with great accompaniments in the soft egg, grilled octopus, and vegetables. Chilled lobster salad is the best lobster presentation I've ever had - part lobster roll-type salad, part raw lobster meat, and a separated intact claw, ripe for dipping into either of 3 fantastic sauces (I personally ate the horseradish creme fraiche by itself!). Strawberry cream cheese roll was a surprising downer. Having high expectations for the pastries, only the moist center was good"

  • "We have LOVED everything that Paul Kahan has done and have been to all of his restaurants at least once. We did not love Nico. The food was very good. The decor very sharp (if not a little bigger than it needed to be). The prices were higher than they should have been for the food. The servers seem more like Gold Coast servers than Paul Kahan restaurant servers - We went twice and must say we were a little disappointed."

  • "If you are interested in high quality seafood then this is a perfect restaurant. Amazing and abundant choices of crudo's, handmade pastas, and the best branzino in town. The service was top notch. The cocktail menu is vast and excellent. Great restaurant!!"

  • "We started with a glass of prosecco and a very knowledgeable tour of the menu - which set us in the right direction. Everything we had was greta, was timed really nicely and I must recommend their named dessert - WOW!"

  • "Dined this weekend at Nico Osteria and I don't believe I would change a single moment. Our small bites were not so small and included: 1) Baccala Mantecato; 2) La Quercia Prosciutto; 3) Slow Cooked Rabbit; 4) Goat Cheese Caramelle; and 5) Saffron Gemelli. All of the dishes had wonderful combinations of flavors and left my tongue incredibly twisted with flavors. Our server shared his knowledge of the menu and provided recommendations of personal and customer favorites. He also recommended wines for different "phases" of our meal that complimented our food. Service was timely without being intrusive. Several individuals kept our water glasses filled, delivered our food complete with explanations of all ingredients, and/or took our orders."

  • "We were looking forward to Nico, after reading glowing reviews. First the good part: Food is very good with small plates in interesting combinations. Wine list is mostly Italian and good value. Bad news: tables are jammed together, piped music is loud and annoying, so much so that EVERYONE HAS TO YELL. We unfortunately learned all about the politics of a local hospital from table left, and all about pet dogs/cats from table right, and all about crazy men in their lives from table behind. Couldn't wait to leave the cacophony."
    Dined on 6/13/2014
  • "First of all the wine list is 100% Italian with predominantly red nebiolos, while restaurant is mostly seafood. There are no good white wines, those by glass not worth it. Food is trying hard to look Italian, but the taste is far off. Lobster spaghetti tasted exactly like Bolognese. Grilled octopus is not what it usually is, I.e. grilled octopus, but a heavy bruscetta with a tiny little slice of octopus. Overall the place pretends to be what it is not."

  • "Nico Osteria was simply outstanding. The drinks were creative and tasty. Our server picked a terrific wine. The service was excellent start to finish. The food was just terrific--grilled asparagus, grilled ramps, rabbit, rigatoni with northern ragu, and the branzino were great (faves were the rabbit and rigatoni). Then we split the burnt honey gelato (delicious), tiramisu (best I've ever had), and the nico torte. There are almost no words for the torte. Coffee was very good. The atmosphere is really nice--open, clean, cool--and sitting at the chefs counter was a real treat for us. We cannot say enough...and hope we have an excuse to go back to Chicago and enjoy Nico Osteria again."

  • "Service was too slow for lunch. Food was great, but took a long time between initial drink order and follow up meal order. Also, server didn't check in until meal was half done. Considering the $12+ "craft" cocktails, think they'd be quicker to hit you up for refills. At least the ladies' discussion next to us about their botox business was entertaining."

  • "Pros: Food was excellent, Drinks were great too. CONS: Waited 30 mins for a reserved table. Waiter seemed a little condescending toward gf. Her: I'm not really looking for fish" Him: "You're at a seafood place." Seating is VERY close to other tables. Overall experience was ok, but it was our first time there. Definitely willing to give this place another shot."
