Excellent food, but some unexpected presentation. Both the crab appetizer and the grilled octopus appetizer were served on toast. The Branzino with heirloom tomatoes was outstanding, though the bill was a shock. The price on the menu was per pound, but it is easy to overlook that when ordering and it would be good to have the waiter give some indication of what to expect on the front end without the customer having to ask.

The food - grilled octopus bruschetta and sweetbreads w/beets were most interesting and flavorful. The dessert (Nico Torte) was one of the best desserts I've ever had. The one food item I didn't care for as much was the squid ink conchiglie. The menu said it came with big eye tuna; it did not say that it was big eye tuna sausage. I would have preferred chunks of tuna (grilled, seared, whatever) rather than pulverized into sausage, or at least told what to expect. The service was friendly but way too SLOW. The worst part - the barstools were too high and my legs were uncomfortable to the point where I could not focus/carry on a conversation or enjoy myself (made worse by the slow paced service). DO NOT SIT AT THE CHEF'S COUNTER. Painful.

This was my second time Nico Osteria. Overall service was good but once the place started getting busy it was hard to get our server. Not many healthy choices. Wanted to substitue side for something with no/less butter and was not able to do that. Green beans on my entree were cold, so was the cauliflower that my friend ordered. Was told that this is the way they are meant to be served. Price does not warrant food quality/taste.

The table wasn't ready when we arrived so they wanted to seat us in the "salon". The hostess tried to seat us in an area that already had guests who had no intention of sharing. We found somewhere else to sit, but our drinks took forever. They arrived just as we were to be seated, and they wouldn't transfer the check to the table, which was on the end near the kitchen. It was very busy and nearly every server passed by too close to the table. Our crudo took way too long to arrive, as did the bruschetta which was burnt. The main courses arrived while we still eating the appetizer. They were mediocre at best. The best part of the evening was the Manhattan. We won't be back.

My husband and I went there for dinner for our anniversary this past weekend. We had an 8:15 reservation and waited 10 minutes for our table. We were seated at a table for two, but we might have well been dining with the couples next to us. The tables are only inches apart. Normally I hate that, but this night we were lucky to be seated next to some very nice, easy going people who went along with the crazy situation. We even went out for drinks with the father/son who sat next to us. That said, you may want to request a booth or go with 4 people. The food was good, but we were disappointed the frito misto only comes in one size. They should offer a smaller portion. The pasta was yummy and the service was good. Very loud atmosphere.

Seafood paradise in a very trendy part of town. You cannot go wrong: the oysters, various "Italian style sashimi" to the grilled octopus. Solid cocktails, decent wine list. Two dishes were outstanding: the squid ink pasta with an unusual sauce and the amazing salt crusted branzino. And if you still have space don't miss the Tiramisu and the cardamom gelato.

The menu is sensible Italian: somewhat lighter fare, moderate-size portions, more herbs than cheeses. Nico bills itself as a seafood place, so we had starter plates of tuna and madai, garganelli pasta (bits of shrimp) and a whole dover sole to share. They were good (though the pasta was just Okay) but expensive. Starters and pasta courses hover around $20, entrees (except for chicken) start at about $35 and go higher, quite a bit higher. The food is not quite good enough, nor the starter servings ample enough, to justify those price tags. Nico is basically a Place To Be Seen, appealing to visitors and The Titled. Service was unnecessarily rushed and too patronizing. We knew more about seafood than our waiter.

I can't wait to go back to Nico Osteria this fall or winter. Why? Our first visit tasted just like summer--light, fresh, bursting with summer ingredients--and I want to see how the menu changes with the season. My husband and I visited for our anniversary. We were treated to complimentary glasses of a lovely Prosecco, and the rest of the service was attentive and welcoming as well. The food was outstanding. We shared a tomato and crab salad, a grilled octopus fettunta, a pasta, and a whole black bass. We loved it all, but the fettunta and bass were the standouts. This is not an inexpensive evening--the bass alone was about $50--but it is worth it for a splurge. Coffee comes with complimentary sweets-they were delicious, too.

We had the BEST meal here--everything we ordered was delectable! Equally importantly, the service was top-notch. The pasta we ordered arrived with a bit of a delay following the some of the other dishes. We were having such a great time that we hardly noticed, but our waitress apologized for the wait and brought over a complimentary glass of wine for my friend and me. It's one thing to react to slow service or a potentially poor experience by doing something like that, but I really appreciated the staff's proactive approach to the situation. I can't wait to go back and try more of the dishes!

Our reservation was honored but the first two tables they tried to give us were unsatisfactory. One just outside the kitchen, the other in a very dark unlit outside spot. We picked the next table ourselves and the accomodated. The food was ok to very good with two outstanding dishes, the octopus and seafood stew. Otherwise only ok and very overpriced. The service staff was very attentive but the waitress was just fair. Better dining is surely available in this great town.

The meal at Nico was one of my top ten dining experiences of all time, the kind that had my husband and I embarrassing ourselves by moaning out loud between bites. Sharing several plates, we began with Kampachi crudo that was perfectly composed with tiny potato crisps and mâché. Next we had an endive salad that I never had a bite of because I couldn't tear myself away from the heirloom tomato salad with fresh crab meat. Lastly, we shared a fresh pasta with pesto and shrimp that was outstanding-we barely had room for the eggplant and mozzarella side dish and no room for the gorgeous dessert menu-even though it was my birthday!

The food was amazing original, beautifully prepared and nearly perfect (my Halibut was a bit overcooked and a tad dry - only complaint). The squid-ink pasta was astounding and the crudi were a revelation. However it is a place to be seen and so the tables are crammed together. It's impossible to have a conversation without being overheard. And when one's food comes the couples on both sides discuss your choices. I understand expensive real estate, but it's just not conducive to fine dining. I would go again in a minute if I could have one of the booths or tables - but at these prices, won't return to be crammed into the middle row with my shoulders nearly touching a stranger. Noise level = energetic (which means very loud).
