Diner Reviews
  • "Everything about Nico's was very good, except the service is a bit slow. We had a delicious beet salad appetizer and equally good salmon and duck entrees. Unfortunately there was no time for dessert or coffee, as we were attending a show. We sat down 90 minutes before showtime (and they were aware of our plans), so service should have been much quicker. The waiter was very attentive and knowledgeable, and Nico's has a very pleasant atmosphere and a great looking bar."

  • "Having been in the food business for 40 years this place is in dire need of a makeover both food and decor. the food was bland and was not as fresh as it could be. In today's restaurant scene this is unacceptable. They get by because of a somewhat captive clientele that go to PAC. Maybe a Berger and a beer in the bar but not for fine dining."

  • "Great for before show dining, price fix menu was good for $42.00."

  • "Nico is a good choice if attending an event at NJPAC, as it is adjacent to the venue. They have a limited prix fixe menu on show nights, currently $42 per for3 courses, not including drinks. There is a nice wine list, and the menu, while brief, has variety and is well thought out. Offerings change seasonally, and the food is well prepared with excellent ingredients. The staff is conscientious and ensures that diners are finished prior to the show. I don't know if the full menu is available if you are not attending a performance."

  • "This was our first time at the PNC Art Center in Newark. (1) Easy to get too. (2) Plenty of close parking. (3) The "Nico Kitchen & Bar " rates with the best in our state theater's venue. Thanks for the wonderful experience."

  • "What a spot if you are attending a performance at NJPAC...you walk into the lobby of the theater! The fish entrees we had (branzini & black bass) were exquisite. It is a prix fixe menu and a little pricey ($42) ut you get a nice appy, great entrée choices and a dessert. Service extremely slow ,ran out of lemons and limes took forever... Manager did eventually go rob some limes from somewhere but it was an unfortunate impression we were left with. Would give them another shop because of convenience and ambience but will call ahead to confirm they have lemons and limes!!!!"

  • "Only fault was food came out a little slow. However, since we were there for a show, they allowed us to come back at intermission for dessert which was great! Will do this again for every performance we see at NJPAC."

  • "My Fiancé and I stumbled through the rain into Nico a little late for our 6:45 Reservation. The Hostess promptly seated us, despite being late and were greeted, almost immediately, by our Server, Crandal. It took a few minutes for My Lady and I to decide, but Crandal was patient and took our drink order only to return a few minutes later with our Cokes and took down our order. Food delivery was prompt. The biggest downfall was the NOISE. There were so many people at the bar and the vast majority of them had no idea what an "Inside Voice" is. Nevertheless, our meal was great. Shortly before our Mains arrived Crandal told us that we could come back during Intermission for Dessert because we were getting close to show time. Superb Hospitality!"

  • "I had reserved for lunch on the 2nd of April. When I got to the restaurant, there was no record of it. I had a confirmation. Then the hostess told me that Open Table often switches the date when they don't have a reservation at the requested time. Sure enough, I looked at my confirmation and it was for a week later. I had not noticed just accepting that the confirmation was for the time I requested. The hostess graciously found us a table although it was crowded. The hostess said that Open Table has done this before with other customers."

  • "There is, overall, little to be said for this place, except for a courteous and pleasant waitstaff---if slow and inattentive. When they do notice, they'll smile and hop right to your request---that is, when they finally notice you. Overall, the food was nothing to write home about; soup lukewarm, bacon bits like steel BB's, salad greens limp and tasteless. Only draw is the prominent location, which they seem to be exploiting by scrimping on the quality in the kitchen."

  • "I have been to Nico in the past, on performance nights. The convenience is undisputed, however, this meal was disappointing. Portions were small, selection smaller!"

  • "I really like Nico's but something was off the last time. The service was very slow (it took about 20 minutes to get a drink) and the presentation of the meals was not very appealing. The crispy pork chops were 2 large pork chops (where one would have been enough) just stacked... not very appealing. I will of course give Nico's another chance since I really like it there, but I hope this is not a sign of a decline."

  • "Overall a nice place to visit..especially if your seeing a show at the NJPAC..The food was tasty..The menu could have been better..I would like to have had additional choices...The weekend/Show menu is different from the nonShow menu....One of our servers spilled a drink on the table.. no biggie..Cleanup went well. The food could have been warmer but at that time the volume of customers was heavy...Drinks were well made! Ambiance is nice and stylish.."

  • "We are long time NJSO subscribers but never had dinner at Nico. We made a reservation for ninety minutes before the concert and were excited about going. We were annoyed from the start. First, we were taken to the worse table in the room (behind the receptionist's desk) when clearly, many others were available. Upon complaining, we were shown to a very nice table. Our waiter was fine. However, forty five minutes after ordering, we had yet to receive our appetizer. We were becoming a bit anxious about making the concert on time. After speaking to the manager, the appetizers came. When the main course arrived, mine was tepid rather than hot, an indication to me that it had been sitting somewhere prior to serving. • "The only negative to the dining was the lack of quality of the desert Even though I plan on returning I won't order any desert again."

  • "Given the location, which is great. I EXPECTED MORE, the menu is limited and the amount of food they serve you is small. The price for.their drinks are too high. The staff was helpful and continued to come to the table to see if everything was all right. I would not recommend this restaurant , unless you are looking for a place eat snacks and drink before you go to a show or a event at the NJPAC center."

  • "I wanted to try a new restaurant in Newark instead of patronizing the many restaurants on Ferry Street, I should have stuck with my original plans. The skirt steak tasted like it had freezer burn and duck breast was not to my liking. We left the restaurant hungry after spending $98. If you have steak on the menu, steak sauce should be stocked. Also the Nico's Punch was too strong for my liking. The best part of the meal was the Spring salad and the service. I will not be patronizing Nico's again."

  • "This was our third visit and, as usual, we found everything to be adequate but nothing was outstanding. Since it is located inside NJPAC, it is an ideal choice when time is tight."

  • "This location, in the NJPAC, will always be the convenient spot for pre-/post-theater dining. We are here four or five times a year and this was one of the better experiences. Service is OK but not great and you can still get lost in the rush if you take a bit too long to make your drink and dinner selections. I wish the wine list were deeper with nicer mid-priced selections. Did they jack up the prices overall? We were pleasantly surprised by a refreshed menu. The food was nicely prepared and enjoyable but accompaniments were sparse. I'm not sure side dishes are even offered -- certainly not mentioned by the server. Dessert was very good, but we were still running for the theater after waiting on the check. Still trying since 1997."

  • "We were just there on a Friday night before an NJPAC event. It was half empty, but I spite of the fact that staffing was more than adequate, they seemed incabable of getting entrees out of the kitchen. Appetizers were served promptly, and then we sat. And we sat. Our server said that this was a repeating issue, and when we asked him go check on our food, he said that servers were not allowed in the kitchen. He had to find a manager, who went in and came back and said that our food would be right out. And then we sat some more. By the time we finished our entrees, we had five minutes for dessert and coffee."

  • "Both the quality of the food and the service was excellent at Nico, prior to an NJSO performance. I would recommend it, and believe that the menu is becoming more creative and the service much better than it was a year ago."

  • "Was disappointed to here that the Prix Fix menu was only available when performances were scheduled at the NJPAC. The regular menu was somewhat limited on options and it seemed that their specialty was the personal pizzas. The night we were there, the large resturant section was closed and only a small section next to the bar was open. The service was quite good and everyone enjoyed their selections, although some if the portions were modest which is very contrary from to other options in Newark."

  • "This is the second time we have eaten thee before a show at the PAC. The food was excellent both times and the house pino grigio delicious. The waitress was very good and very personable. Love having the big bottle of water on the table."

  • "We made a reservation here for convenience sake - we had tickets to see a show. Our expectations were not too high. We were pleasantly surprised when the food was absolutely outstanding as well as the service. We will go back just for the restaurant!"

  • "Located on the premises of NJPAC, Nico is obviously a convenient choice for dining when you're attending an event there. Convenience aside, the dining experience is outstanding in every way, from the wine list to menu choices and gracious, friendly service, and not overly priced, though they could easily take advantage of the convenience factor. Highly recommended."

  • "We had tickets to a concert at NJPAC and had dinner at Nico Kitchen. Food was excellent and priced quite reasonably. Atmosphere and it's nearness to the theaters at NJPAC."

  • "Limited menu and not a lot of food offered in each serving. Would have preferred to order off of the regular menu, but only price fixed was available."

  • "What a huge disappointment. The food was average at best. Bread stale, food served cold. Wait staff - horrible. Had to keep flagging wait staff down for any service. Served our dinners with no offer for a second glass of wine. Had to wave someone over than waited another 15 mins for the wine. A price fixed, over priced menu. Not worth it at all."

  • "Overall my experience was great. What's unusal for Nico's is the amount of time it took the server to come to the table."

  • "NICO's is worth a visit if you are attending a performance at the NJ-PAC and want to eat in a very convenient location. The service was slow, and food was mediocre (except for the desert which was excellent). The price-fixed menu had reasonably varied choices to suit a range of tastes. Not a bad deal but there is much better food to be found in the area."

  • "Our waiter was extremely helpful; knowledgeable about the food choices and wines. We followed his advice and were pleased with all selections from appetizer to dessert. Frito was light - a pleasure. Gnocci deserved reputation. Second party had short ribs which he enjoyed. Would have liked more dessert choices but gelato worked. Nico's was an excellent place to eat before a show. Definitely will go again."

  • "We made reservations for 6pm and got there around 6:15pm. Perhaps they were upset and made us wait to be served. We sat for a good while before anyone even asked if we'd like something to drink. We were seated in the back of the restaurant behind some sort of partition, it felt as if we were overflow. The food was not great. For the prices (only options were the prix fixe menu options), the dishes were okay. The best course was the dessert. I probably will not come here again or recommend it to others."

  • "We chose Niko because we were going to a show at NJPAC. It was obviously the most convenient choice and I wasnt expecting much. I was very pleasantly surprised! The prefix menu had plenty of options. The food was excellent! Our waitress, Amber, was amazing. Her suggestions were spot on, her timing was impeccable, and her professionalism was great. All in all we had a great experience and would definitely go back, even if we dont have tickets to a show. The gnocchi appetizer was really delicious. The flat iron steak was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The bronzini was amazing. All arpund great meal."

  • "The wait staff was slow. The food was fair at best. For the kind of prices you charge it should be top notch. I am out to eat every weekend to all different places and this experience was not good to say the least and very overpriced for what you are giving. Sorry to say but we won't be back"

  • "I recently had dinner at Nico Bar and Grill prior to seeing Black Violin at NJPAC. This place is a hidden gem in Newark. The food is on par with the NYC restaurants that I go to. And parking is right out front. The waiter was great. When you go be sure to try the sweet potato puree. It is the best."

  • "It was cold bordering on drafty. New redesign not as elegant, almost a cafeteria feel. Food and service were very good but there are other spots nearby, e.g. Maize, that would work as well and not be as expensive. Would recommend to people with little time to spare before a show."

  • "Arrived on time, restaurant was half empty. We were taken to a table in the doorway. When we asked for another table, we were rudely told "no, there is no other table." The next two couples were seated at the better tables we had asked for. The waiter was better than the hostess had been. Only Prix Fixe was available. Very small portions, limited choices, but tasty. Would not return because of unpleasant hostess experience."
