Diner Reviews
  • "They have a banging Prime Rib sandwich that they need to get back but overall not bad"

  • "To be fair, the place has so much potential since it's an old converted movie theater. The bar had a fair amount of beer selections so it lives up to its name however the food was poor. We dined during the week so we did not have a chance to try the "famous Prime Rib." The food seemed to be frozen and just heated with sauce. Nothing special by any measure... If you are looking for a casual place with a above average beer selection, Nick's Tap Room fits the bill however if you are expecting "fine Gastonia" dining, this place should not be on your radar. As for the service, our bartender was friendly and attentive however our waiter did not know too much of the menu items. The service was average so nothing too bad or great at the same time."

  • "Ribeye steak was ordered medium rare with emphasis on rare, came well-done and cut was poor quality. Good selection of beer on tap."

  • "This was mine and my wife's first visit to Nick's. When we walked in the door the hostesses treated us like regulars and had to be the nicest wait staff I've ever seen. We were seated immediately even on A Friday night. Our waitress, Heather, was super cool and extremely nice. The food selection was great and our order arrived promptly. Overall, this place is a cool venue and I will be returning to try more of their extensive menu."

  • "It was a good cut of beef but it was not hot enough when it was served."

  • "The Bison meatloaf was great. Shrimp and grits? We'll grits were hard not done and the sauce tasted funny-not good. The side portions were pitiful I had 2 bites and my steamed vegetables were gone. My son had about 4 bites f mashed potatoes and that was it. Salads were very small. It was slow and our drinks still got empty. The cheesecake was great! And my daughter got 50% off her meal for her birthday. The 2 dudes at bar were a little loud. Overall not bad. Will go back."

  • "This is a wonderful local spot in downtown Gastonia. I've come here often for a group celebration or for a romantic dinner. It's an old theater and they still play old movies on the big screen. The good is excellent and Saturday nights are fun to stay after dinner and join karaoke in the bar area."

  • "I always try to find a local restaurant to take my family when they come in town for a visit. Nick's scored a 10+ on everything from food, ambience, and service. Everyone ordered something different from the menu so we could try a lot of items. OMG….the steaks were so deliciously tender and cooked perfectly. The Fire Cracker shrimp we almost fought over the last one! Even the wedge salad deserves a mention. It was so crisp, cold and fresh with yummy blue cheese. The kicker here was March is my birthday month so I ate for 1/2 price! I am glad we went on 3/1 because I will be returning before the end of the month to take advantage of the special. The overall price I felt was fine for the quality of everything Nick's Tap Room offers."

  • "The atmosphere and food were really good. I think they are a little over-priced for some of their items but overall, it was good."

  • "If this place had better trained staff and managers watching what comes out of the kitchen it could be great. We arrived just before the Saturday rush. They promote an expertise in prime rib and it is one of highest priced items on the menu. I ordered it. The cut was a good size and tender enough. But how could it arrive cold with a Luke warm bake potato that could not melt the butter. Our server did not check us for 10 minutes so I soldiered on. Too bad."

  • "Reserved table for 6 at 7:45 on a Saturday night through Open Table which was accomplished; however, one couple ended up stuck at the end of the booth in the main lane of travel to the bar & to the bathroom. Our waitress, Sarah, was great; however, she didn't offer a choice of side items for our entree & we ended up with soggy, greasy fries. So disappointing!!"

  • "First trip will not return. 1) ran out of their speciality (prime rib) at 6:30 on a Saturday night - Valentines weekend 2) after ordering prime rib it took over 30 minutes for them to come back and say they were out 3) after asking to look over the menu again for a minute it's was 10 minutes before we decided to leave. Server was fine and presumably the manager tried to make amends by offering to buy dinner...unfortunately after almost an hour into our dinner we hadn't even ordered and we too frustrated to ride it out. So if you've got a baby sitter, looking for a good dinner during a special occasion and want to try the establishments speciality you better look somewhere other than Nick's"

  • "Very disappointed. We had to wait another 30 min to be seated...service was horrible and the steaks were paper thin...second time this has happened in two weeks. We spent 100 dollars on nothing:( thank you"

  • "My wife and I ate at Nick's for Valentines Day. We both chose the crab stuffed flounder off the special menu. It was well prepared and delicious. The wedge salad was a bit sparse on the trimmings but the parmesan squash was delightful and the chocolate cake was rich but not overly sweet. Our waiter Nick (not the owner!) was extremely plesant and attentive (not overdone). He was engaging yet humble and professional. He was definitely positive addition to the evening."

  • "Valentine's dinner was a BIG disappointment. They chose a limited menu of their everyday items. Steaks were no better than I can make at home. One side was a mix of corn, asparagus and mushroom. Mushrooms were watery, corn and asparagus had no taste. There were not ANY additional seasonings. Other side was home fries. Really, french fries for a valentine's menu??? The desserts are never made in-house, so they are usually really good. The place is awesome and has great potential, but the menu has always been crap every time we have been. It's called a steakhouse, but the steaks are nothing special. We really like the old theatre theme, but the food prep and atmosphere MUST improve if they are going to make it."

  • "Based on the reviews here, we decided to give this restaurant a shot for V-Day and it was a poor choice. Ambiance 8/10- The restaurant is literally in an old tiered theatre, which created a unique dining experience in itself. Service 8/10- Service was great, our waitress was very attentive. Food 2/10- Steaks were not cooked to order. The steaks themselves were low quality. We have had better steaks at Long Horn Steakhouse. Value 3/10- tough to value you this high based on the poor food. Would have been more satisfied at a chain steak house. Overall 2/10- This type of steak quality and poor cooking is acceptable at Applebee's. We will not be going back. No excuse for that here. We are not sure if the positive reviewers even ate here."

  • "Very slow during the time of day that I visited, but it took a while for the server to show up and take our drink orders. As for food, we only ordered appetizers during this visit. Food items were tasty, but a little pricey for the quantity. Definitely a nice spot for the Gastonia area."

  • "I've eaten at Nick's twice with friends and have never had anything bad. The food was always perfectly seasoned, flavorful and cooked well. The steaks were med rare as ordered and the veggies were very lightly flash fried, soups served hot. Def will go back."

  • "Good food, great location, and good service. Overall experience was good but seating is a little tight in the upstairs area overlooking the kitchen/preparation area."

  • "The restaurant is a converted movie theater. The ambiance is wonderful! We sat in what was the balcony overlooking the lower dining room and kitchen. A classic movie played in the big screen while we ate. I had a hamburger that quite literally melted in my mouth, my wife had a delectable NY strip. The crème brulé cheesecake was something from a dream. We will definitely be going back!"

  • "We picked here to stay local for Queens Feast and we were not disappointed. We were there early and picked a spot at the bar to dine. Love that it has dim lighting. The black and white running in ths background is a nice touch. Its a nice different place if you want to celebrate a special occasion. The food was wonderful. I could have eaten multiple crab cake appetizers. My husband got the New York strip with a gorgonzola stuffed potatoe patty and I had the salmon. A delicious fire roasted corn side was also included. The presentations on the plates were beautiful. Also a huge selection of imported and local beers on tap with knowledgeable people for recommendations. We will most definetly be back."

  • "I was shocked and surprised at how nice the place was and good the food was!!!!!! The menu is not only DELICIOUS but reasonably priced, and who would have known it was in the heart of Gastonia!!!!! We will be going back!"

  • "They were playing an old Danny Kaye movie on the screen and the food was pretty good. Not the best meal I've had at Nick's but nothing to really complain about. Wine was excellent and while my steak was slightly overcooked (I ordered medium rare and it was more medium) it was still a tender filet. Enjoyed the evening with my sisters. Will return."

  • "I had the ceasar salad, filet mignon & the creme brulee cheesecake. It was FABULOUS!! The steak was perfect. Cooked just right, topped with pork belly & melted pimento cheese! Ive never written a review for a restaurant but felt I should say something about this place. My husband had the same except he got the Firecracker shrimp instead of a salad & was nice enough to share with me & it was great as well!! Our group all agreed that this was probably the best restaurant that we have ever been to & that is saying something because we love to go to different restaurants & try new ones in various locations. We would highly recommend anyone to give this restaurant a try because we can guarantee that you will most definitely not be disappointed."

  • "Tough to choose with so many places participating, however, we decided to drive to Gastonia and visit since we had previously considered the Waxhaw location. Everything was great - service, food, etc. Very good server and we didn't have to wait for anything or look for her when we needed something. She checked by often and was attentive. Shrimp/crab cakes for apps were very good. Steak and flounder entrees very good although if that's the normal steak they serve for $24.99 I don't know that I'd order again. Good experience."

  • "The service was much to fast while they slide our food and bill on the table The entree was fair. Too many starches on the plate since the filet was served with pimento cheese on it. We came from Lake Wylie and will probably not go back."
