NicholasConsistently outstandingMy wife and I enjoyed the chef's wine pairings. A diner can pick between two choices for the five courses so we ordered both (10 pairs to try). Culinary heaven. Luscious scallops, delicate hake, succulent braised pig, I could go on. The wine pairings were done with balance in mind. Wines that tasted just OK on their own came alive when enjoyed with the food (the Patagonian Malbec stands out here, paired with lamb, and the Provence rose with seafood).
Having enjoyed the wines with the food, nearly all the wines in the pairing can be purchased from the restaurant. So we left with a case of wine, including six bottles of outstanding Cherry Cove pinot noir. Reasonable prices too.
We've eaten there before and we will definitely be back.6/15/2013 12:00:00 AMA bit pricey, but the serviceA bit pricey, but the service was great and the food terrific so it was worth it in the end.6/11/2013 12:00:00 AMNicholas is an A+Thoroughly enjoyed the tasting menu and the service was impeccable.6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMBeen enjoying Nicholas forBeen enjoying Nicholas for years, This was the best!!5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMLived up to it's reviews! The best dining experience from start to finish that we have had in quite some time. From the minute you walk in to the time you depart the staff make you feel welcome and appreciated. Every food choice we had challenged the palate with a different sensation. The tasting menu with the wine pairings was fantastic and a must try for any wine enthusiast.5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMGlad I made the tripNicholas was highly rated, so I wanted to experience it. Was a long ride to red bank from Dumont NJ but was worth it. The food and service were great. Staff paid attention to every detail. Choice of two tasting menus but unless you love fish the only option is 3 course. Food was very good, but not as good as the Modern in NYC. I was a little disappointed, but that was only because my expectations were so high! All in All very nice service, food and wine list. Probably best for special occasion as it is quite $$$$$.5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMReliably wonderfulEverything was perfect except for a carrot-based appetizer that seemed to lack focus, flavor, and execution--surprising that it was on such a carefully constructed menu.5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMAs Perfect as We RememberedNicholas was as wonderful as we remembered from our first visit. We first dined at Nicholas in the summer of 2011. We had selected the restaurant based on its Zagat ratings. The food is exquisite; my husband and I love the complexity of taste that the chef achieves by combining various delicate flavors. We love the attentive but never hovering service. The timing of the various courses' arrival at the table was impeccable This trip we came for my husband's brithday and invited very good friend s who had hosted us at a number of fine restaurants in NYC and they were similarly smitten by the restaurant. We live four hours away but we certainly will return every chance we get.5/24/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Food/Service,Skimpy PortionsNicholas was an excellent dining experience. The food was delicious. I had a rack of lamb off the bone which was tender and tasty and my wife had the halibut which too was flavorful. The service was outstanding. Water glasses were filled on a timely basis and the waiter timed our meal perfectly which meant we weren't rushed but also didn't feel like we were lounging around. The only criticism was that, other than the cheese option for dessert, there wasn't enough of the food. We ordered al a carte and the lamb came only with two pieces and neither dish came with any sides of substance. But if your looking for high quality cuisine, this is a place for you.5/22/2013 12:00:00 AMPrecious and a little datedAlthough the service was impeccable and the food very good I still don't know if I would return. This is my second time there in a year and I find the food to be a little too precious (i.e. large plates, little bits of food with lots of stuff on it and a lot of explanation and dramatic description by the server) It all seems a little too 80's and a little too stale and most of all, a little, no a lot, too expensive for what it is.5/19/2013 12:00:00 AMWe went early, and it wasWe went early, and it was very quiet for a Saturday. The food was very tasty and the dessert was excellent!5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMGorgeousThe meal was excellent as always in this upscale suburban restaurant. The newly updated main dining room was unusually empty which left extra time for attention from the owner/chef and his staff. The seasonal items on the menu were outstanding. We love the garden menu and the cheeses!5/14/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent experienceWe went to Nicholas for Mothers' Day. The restaurant is beautiful. The staff is more than attentive and the food is unique and delicious. We had a lovely time.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat place!Great place for a special romantic occasion. Food was great, service was awesome, will definitely go back.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMWell-oiled machineWe waited years to try this place out, and my husband and I were not disappointed. We were there to celebrate his birthday, and had an exquisite meal with perfect wine pairings. The Tasting Menu was to die for!! Every motion by the waitstaff well rehearsed and not obtrusive. We will be back!5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMrelaxedWe chose the 3 course menu and found it had enough choices in each course to please most.
The service was well played. The waiter was very aware of when to ask questions, when to approach the table and how to be a good listener. Very professional. Everyone at our table enjoyed their choices. Nice wine list!5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful Dining ExperienceI took my wife to Nicholas for her birthday, after reading the Zagat review. It was, perhaps, the most exceptional dinner I've ever enjoyed. The service and attention were extraordinary as well. Typically, I don't trouble myself with writing reviews ... and when I do, they're almost invariably negative. It is my great pleasure to praise the chef and staff of Restaurant Nicholas. We look forward to visiting again!5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMThe service and food wereThe service and food were outstanding. The copia fish was very good. Really enjoyed the tasting menu. The service is impeccable and the unique pairing of food is beyond compare.4/24/2013 12:00:00 AMWe had a lovely evening. We had a lovely evening. The only thing that shocked us was that in the main dining area they let a group in with jeans, and sneakers. Please don't take away the dress code because certain people have no respect for fine dining.
Our waiter Bill was outstanding.4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMOur favorite restaurant forOur favorite restaurant for a special night out. I especially appreciated the many vegetable choices.4/16/2013 12:00:00 AMGoodI've been wanting to try Nicholas for several years, and am happy that I finally had the experience. I chose the three course prix fixe. Staff was accommodating & attentive without being overbearing. Food was good; amuse bouche was delicious. Appetizer was very good; but too small to share a bite! Spacing between appetizer & main course was a bit long. Bread is very good; especially the cranberry pecan(ate too much, compensating for small portions). Dessert was good; birthday truffles were AMAZING, birthday banana bread was just OK but such a lovely treat. Scotch pour was very very weak. Music is too elevator; something less reserved would be appropriate - overall the atmosphere could stand to be a bit warmer and less uptight.4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent food and atmosphere.Excellent food and atmosphere.
