Diner Reviews
  • "A very refined experience for a foodie. Good service accompanied the food and drink. A nice night when money is no object."

  • "Our first time at this restaurant. Have known about it for years but hadn't tried it because it is so pricey. It was a special occasion so we went for it! This was much more than dinner out. From the moment you go through the door you know it's not the usual fine dining restaurant ... It was an adventure in food and wine. The food was exquisitely prepared and the presentation was awesome. The wine served with each course was explained in detail by the very professional and charming server. By the end of the evening the price didn't phase us a bit. It was worth the experience. We'll be back for another special occasion. If we had the means to go more often we would."

  • "The food was excellent as always as was the service. We love going there is has been very consistent over the years."

  • "The portions accompanying the exquisitely paired tasting menu were spot on. The presentation and the food was excellent as always."

  • "When you set the "bar" for quality and service higher than other restaurants, you can only go higher. So once again, Nicholas did not disappoint. For me, the theme of the evening was "refreshing". The bib lettuce amuse-bouche was a great surprise and flavorful, and did exactly what Nicholas intended - kick-start the taste buds for the next courses. The lump crab salad first course had generous amount of lump crab which complimented my second course, a grilled Wahoo which was firm but flaky, satisfying and refreshing. My wife's theme was likened unto "surf and turf" - a day boat scallop first course followed by a strip steak was was prepared just right, succulent and flavorful. As always, service was precise, informative, but not stuffy."

  • "Service was excellent. Food was very good. Recommend for special occasion. Expect to spend about $100 each."

  • "This is the perfect place to take someone special. The dining experience is exactly as it should be. A team of waiters takes care of every need. The wine pairing with the tasting menu leaves a lasting impression. I absolutely recommend this restaurant to anyone who truly appreciates food and is looking to have a memorable night."

  • "This was the perfect restaurant for a special occasion. The service is impeccable and the staff does anything and everything to accommodate you. The food is exquisite and delicious. Every bite was seasoned and cooked to perfection. Everything is plated and presented just right. The portion sizes are great too. This place is worthy every penny. Whether you're coming for a birthday or business meeting, you will walk out fully satiated and satisfied!"

  • "Ok so this is a weird review for me. This restaurant has off the chart reviews and nothing was really wrong or bad. However, I went for my 14th anniversary thinking most romantic, best food , service all that good stuff. When we were seated I was surprised that we were pretty much sitting with 2 other tables. It is that close. Then the food is above average but not wow. Portions are SMALL. Service was Ok no complaints but again not impressed. Guess with all the hype I expected more kind of like when a movie trailer shows you all the good parts and then the movie is ok."

  • "Our family was celebrating my daughter's move to London and our family likes going to Nicholas on special occasions. Had the tasting menu- it was disappointing- tuna was underseasoned, wahoo dry and lamb a bit tough. dessert course was very sweet and not great. My family had the 3 course menu and enjoyed it thoroughly. We have been there several times and quite frankly this time the food was not up to par. We were also seated by the door in the upper room and my view was of the service area and computer. Not very appealing. We will return since we usually have a had a wonderful meal and can only hope that this was just an off night at Nicholas"

  • "We have been wanting to come here for some time. We heard all great reviews. We were not disappointed. The service was right on. Wendy our server was on top of every move. I had the organic chicken very tasty and my wife had the cod and it was excellent as well. For desert the mango ice cream was awesome. Great place for special occasion. It seemed like everybody there was celebrating something. Would highly recommend Nocholas if you are looking for the perfect place to dine that cover all the bases."

  • "I took my daughter for her 16th Birthday. She felt like a princess. We both love the food, the service, the ambience, and the wine (me). Best dish of the night: scallops. I will definitely recommend this restaurant and I will go back."

  • "This is one of if not my favorite restaurant in the Red Bank area. Excellent food. Attentive service. It's always a pleasure dining at Nicholas."

  • "My husband and I relish those moments when we come across truffles on restaurant menus but were so disappointed with the 6 course truffle menu which we both ordered. Each dish was topped with a generous amount of black truffles which, in hindsight, should have been the telltale sign that the truffles would be inferior. They were, in fact, tasteless and completely devoid of that musky, pungent aroma that makes truffles so prized & so decadently delicious. We did not expect that a 5 star New Jersey restaurant would disappoint its customers on this front but Nicholas did. What would have been a 5 star dining experience - as what lied beneath those shaved, odorless, tasteless truffles was outstanding cuisine - became a 2 star epicurean fare."

  • "Nice night but really was a mixed bag however. My meal was quite delicious albeit the presentation of the suckling pig was somewhat odd - looked like two brown largish ice cubes on the plate. My wife ordered the short rib but received the wrong order. She decided to keep it and her beef was undercooked and the potatoes not so interesting or flavorful. All in all the food was quite good. Ambience - well let's just say quite old school. Covered plates, cruise ship decor and a staid dining room that lacked energy. Many diners were dressed in suits and cocktail dresses which I thought odd for a Saturday night (8:30 seating). Staff was very attentive and service excellent - just something of a back to the '80s dining experience."

  • "This was far from my favorite dining experience here. Usually I cannot tell you which course was best because they are all amazing. This time, I have a hard time saying I truly enjoyed any of them. Nothing was special or different."
    Dined on 2/22/2014
  • "We have been dining at Nicholas for years but this time we took our two sons. They enjoyed it very much and are still raving about the different courses and the wines that accompanied them. The service as always was very attentive but unobtrusive. Quite elegant. An evening to savor and reflect on."
    Dined on 2/16/2014
  • "As always, look forward to attending Nicholas for a special occasion each year. This year, as always, met all my expectations."
    Dined on 2/15/2014
  • "Food & service were excellent. We felt rushed - everything came out very quickly, we had a 5:45 reservation and were out by a little after 7. Perhaps that was because it was Valentines weekend and it is not so busy other days. I think they were looking to turn over the tables in order to accommodate more reservations. Tables are close together but the sound level was good - acoustics are managed very well."
    Dined on 2/15/2014
  • "Been there many times. It seems the portions have gotten smaller and more expensive. The Valentines Menu did not compare with the seasonal menus"
    Dined on 2/15/2014
  • "The food was great, the service was very good. The restaurant was just a little off - it was mobbed for Valentine's day, and it is always tough to judge a restaurant for their service on a holiday."
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "We live 15 minutes away from Nicholas and never tried this place. We always go to New York City if we want to go for a fine dining. I guess not anymore. We were not disappointed. Food and service is top notch."

  • "Food and service was outstanding. Yet for the price I would have loved larger portions. Was not filling enough. For a once in a while treat Nicholas was phenomenal."

  • "Overpriced. Would never go on holiday raised prices."

  • "Back to Nicholas for another birthday. Off course! The food was delightful and the wait service was exquisite. Thank you Nicholas for being there!"

  • "Service, food, and drink all were amazing! Went for a special occasion and enjoyed it immensely! Actually saw a man propose to a woman there! Menu had great options! We chose the six course dinner and every course made us happy and looking forward to the next one! Very attentive!"

  • "5+ stars food, 6-courses diner is delicious and artistic. Extremely friendly and helpful waiters and hostess. As soon as we stepped into the restaurant they made us feel like VIPs. Not cheap though but worth every dollar you paid. We will go back for sure for our next event."

  • "This is NYC dining at the Jersey Shore. Formal dining in main room. Casual dining in the bar room. Nicholas and his wife have created a wonderful experience of fine dining with a memorable wine list."

  • "This place is fantastic. I wanted to blow my girlfriends mind on our anniversary and this place did the job very well!!! Thank you for the wonderful service and great atmosphere."

    Dined on 2/8/2014
  • "A beautiful tasting menu, with wines, lets you enjoy a little of everything. NOTHING disappointed. At $135 pp, it is not the kind of place I can go to often (our party of 4, with drinks, coffee and tip topped out near $700) but for a special occasion, it is unforgettable. I have to say, the decor was a little Vegas for me - but beautiful. Service was perfect and nearly invisible. Wine pairing was AMAZING!"

  • "This is an excellent upscale restaurant. It is not inexpensive, but for this level of service and imaginative preparation it is a good value. Menu is prix fixe at several different price levels. Wine list is well thought out and has good options at a variety of price points. Service was attentive without being intrusive. During our visit, there were several larger groups with a few folks who were a bit loud, but that is probably to be expected on a Saturday night. We will be back!"

  • "We've never been disappointed here at Nicholas. The food is expertly prepared and just delicious. The service is the best I've ever had at a fine dining restaurant."

  • "My husband and I just celebrated our anniversary at Nicholas and as always we enjoyed our experience. Whatever your expectations, you will have a unique and memorable experience. I definitely recommend this restaurant."

  • "Heard exceptional reviews about the place and was really looking forward to my first visit. The service was very good, my girlfriend said her Sea Bass was very good but my steak left something to be desired. Besides it being quite small it was not any where near a great steak. I can understand the portion but not the quality."
    Dined on 1/24/2014
  • "The food was delicious, but the portions are small. Don't go there super hungry. I was a little surprised with the decor. It was very orange. It gave me an Asian or Oriental feeling. Overall, it was a great dinner with excellent service, but you will pay well for it."
