About this restaurant

  • Lively
  • Great for creative cocktails
  • Neighborhood gem
Since the opening of their acclaimed Restaurant Nicholas in 2000, Chef Nicholas Harary and his wife, Melissa, modernized the concept of fine dining. This mainstay of Red Bank garnered some of the industry’s highest praise, including 15 straight years as Zagat’s highest-rated restaurant in New Jersey, a 4-star review in the New York Times, and a position on several national “best restaurant” lists.

Now, with Barrel & Roost, the couple strips off the white tablecloths and serves up a bold new menu: made-from-scratch food that’s crazy-delicious, yet entirely accessible any night of the week. Set in a newly redesigned modern farmhouse interior, Barrel & Roost is just the place to enjoy Chef Driven Comfort Food with family, old friends, or a grab a drink at the bar for date night!

A rarity in that one entree (baked ziti, new on the menu) arrived cold at the table. It was promptly removed, and a fresh serving at proper temperature arrived a few minutes later. Numerous wait staff expressed apologies and checked back to make sure everything was right. They handled the situation very well.

Went there for Fathers Day and as usual they didn't disappoint. Food is always delicious and the service is perfect. They are also awesome with food allergies. We look forward to our next visit.

Very nice restaurant. Had to wait long for entrees but I guess they got backed up in kitchen. We first had the beet salad but all the dressing and good stuff was on bottom of plate under the arugula. Suckling pig needed more sauce and my short rib entree was cold. Have to consider it was Father s Day. Service was good. Technically it’s a burger place .

This place used to be great. Lately, it’s gone downhill a bit. We went here recently and the water smelled funny, so did one of the wine glasses. The menu hasn’t changed in a while, so after a few visits, it gets stale. We wanted to order apps and then take our time ordering entrees but were told everything had to go in at once. Then, when we were done with desert (not completely), the table was cleared very quickly, like they were shooing us out. It was a busy Saturday night, so maybe they were just overbooked, but we were not there for more than 90 minutes total (if that).

I've always liked this restaurant, but my last two visits have been ruined by the noise level in the restaurant. The food and dining room are upscale, but we all had to shout to each other over the loud music and the noise from the bar. Now I love The Doors and Led Zeppelin, but not when I'm trying to have a celebration meal at a fine restaurant. I won't be back if this doesn't change.

Nicholas Barrel and Roost continues to delight with each visit. For my most recent meal, the beet/arugula salad was plentiful, and the halibut entree was also delish, a nice throwback to the restaurant's previous fine dining incarnation. The desserts are also a decent size to split between several people, for those who want to end the meal on a sweet note but don't want an individual portion. I always look forward to going back.
