Diner Reviews
  • "The food was outstanding. The waiter was knowledgeable and helpful. The wine by the glass was expensive. I would not call this place cosy or warm. Too much light."

  • "Excellent food and service. I would love to make this our weekly date night."

  • "I have been to Niche before, but this time something was not the same. Thursday night very few tables, they were out of popular spirits, the little touch of class was missing. However the food and service did make up for the difference."

  • "The new Niche is open, clean and sophisticated. There are so many whiskeys, bourbons and craft beers my husband was thrilled about this part. He tried some new beers and I got the seeing things which was amazing! We started with the pretzels, they came with this bacon onion jam that was out of this world. Our entrees were the seared tuna and the special of the evening the rib eye. My husband was in complete heaven; the steak was perfectly med-rare and every bite he claimed was better than the first. Now dessert was better than I could have ever hoped for. The milkshake torte, I cannot even describe how wonderful this is you just need to try it. Our server Jeffery was fantastic; he was extremely knowledgeable and attentive. Overall wonderful"

  • "If you're used to the old Niche: white tablecloths, attentive waitstaff, a touch of elegance, it is not the same The food is still fantastic HOWEVER the bar is now part of the restaurant..no table candles, the tables are a dark wood that show your body oils as you rub on them...we had a delicious pretzel appetizer served on a stone piece..because of no plate, all the crumbs stayed on the table through the entire meal...Jeffrey, top waiter in all of Chicago was off that day, disappointing. I would go back to sit at the bar, have a cocktail and an appetizer. But i am torn between the excellent food and the Alexander's type atmosphere. Ok maybe I'm stretching on the Alexander's comment..but wait..doesn't ALexanders serve on white table cloths?"

  • "Based on Vettel's review inthe Trib we visited Niche. A long drive but worth it in terms of the quality of food. The gougeres lived up to the reputation. Salad a little unimaginative, but the main dishes were extremely good. Wine is very high priced, even for modest vintages. Extremely attentive service."

  • "Everything about Niche is just perfect. The dining room is warm and inviting and just the right size. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and attentive about the food and wine offerings. The food was wonderful, the small but adequate menu really had something for everyone. I can't wait to go back, Niche is my new favorite place to dine!"

  • "The food and service were both good to very good but not great to outstanding. I wish there was something memorable to report but there wasn't. Again, no problems, but it just didn't have that spark that would make me want to go back."

  • "My wife and I celebrated our 20th at Niche. The beer and wine list is extensive and the food is wonderful. We will be back!"

  • "Niche is an oasis of taste and ambiance: delicious food, beautifully plated, surprising combinations, lovely wine, non-intrusive but impeccable service. (Thank you, Jeffrey.) This restaurant continues to offer the best of big city dining in a relaxed suburban atmosphere."

  • "We had a great expierence with our server. He was very competent, aware of our meal goals, and well schooled on both food and the resturant offerings. The Manhattan is a must have! Great place for a romantic two or group. Enjoy!!!"

  • "Service was very nice, felt cared for but not hovered over. Food was well-presented. I had an appetizer, mussels, that was fine, but not as good as I'd hoped. Ahi Tuna entree with purple sticky rice was fabulous. Dessert was lovely as well"

  • "My wife took me to Niche for a Father's Day dinner - I had suggested it based on a review by Phil Vettel of the Chicago Tribune. We were not disappointed, both in terms of the exceptional quality and finesse of the food, as well as the attentive level of service. My wife's only criticism is that she felt the portions of her meal were too small for the price - an hour later she said she was hungry. Overall, though, Niche was outstanding - my wife and I both felt we no longer had to drive into Chicago for "haute cuisine.""

  • "Celebrated our fifteenth wedding anniversary at Niche. Elegant, yet comfortable, environment with skilled welcoming staff. The Fried Chicken appetizer was amazing, but that's true of our whole experience. It's the first place I think of when we have a special occasion, or just a night out without the kids."

  • "The food and service were outstanding, but the featured Frog's Leap Cab. at $80/per bottle was disappointing. We'd go back for the food, but the Frog's Leap, while complex and delicious on first tasting, became slightly sour and uninteresting when combined with food. Perhaps it was starting to cork? Niche stores their bottles vertically. Our cork was barely wet. "

  • "My wife and I celebrated our 8th anniversary here. We had 7:30 reservations on a busy Saturday night. We were promptly seated at a small table sandwiched in between two other couples. There wasn't more than two feet between the three parties. It felt uncomfortable from the second we sat down. No private conversations were to be had by anyone. Drink orders were taken promptly, but that was the end of the good service. At the end of dinner our server was apologetic about the way things ran in the restaurant that night. That's fine, but he offered nothing for our extended wait times or less-than-stellar drinks. I don't mind paying three star prices, but have high expectations. The food was good, but overall experience needs polishing."

  • "Niche in Geneva has always been a favorite of mine however, I had not been there since Chef Ayukawa came on board. The restaurant space was completely overhauled and more seating was added as well as an expanded bar. The food was outstanding. We started with the cheese plate complete with local cheeses. I had the salmon, my girlfriend had the pork cheek and we shared a side of brussel sprouts. Both entrees were cooked to perfection and the brussel sprouts were some of the best I have ever had. As always, Vince's wine list is beyond compare in the suburbs. The atmosphere is more casual and the place was filled to capacity most of the time while I was there. You might say, Niche is back and better than ever. "

  • "We recently tried Niche for our first time and everything was wonderful. Fantastic beer list and a great selection of small plates. Our server made great recommendations and took the time to answer any questions thoroughly. They did get busy later so some courses took a little longer than expected to arrive. We loved our meal from start to finish though! My husband is still talking about how much he loved the Ribeye Special. The Grilled Asparagus Salad was one of my favorites."

  • "An unexpected champagne toast started our night. Thanks to Niche for that; I had told them we were celebrating our anniversary. The Cobia was succulent and my husband's ribeye was melt in his mouth good. Our server was one of our best ever - knowledgable, kind, prompt, and able to anticipate everything. We had a wonderful experience"

  • "This is a VERY expensive restaurant with poor service (our waiter was slow, disinterested and unfriendly) and the food was just okay. Nothing memorable except for an overcooked steak which was so well done when we asked for it medium rare. My meal was not hot when it arrived at our table. The ambience is nice here but not nice enough to bring us back. It is unfortunate because I think a more attentive waiter would have made our dining experience a lot better. I expected a lot more at this price point."

  • "We have seen dramatic changes in this facility over the last thirty years. From the iconic Twin Door to the "new" Niche, under new Executive Chef, Chis AYUKAWA, this restaurant reflects an elegant but warm atmosphere for any occasion. The staff was knowledgeable and welcoming. The food was delicious, the portions were perfectly matched to the quality of the dinner expected. About the only negative was the quantity of wine served per glass It was a wonderful anniversary evening, shared with my wife of 45 years. We will be back with friends on a more regular basis. Thank you. "

  • "We've been going to niche for special occasions since it opened, and it just keeps getting better!. There has been a total design remake of the interior, and it feels uh roomier. The starters have expanded but some favorites like their charcuterie and cheese plate remain. My entree of grilled monk fish with saffron yogurt and tomato confit was outstanding. We shared their "shot and a beer" dessert, which was hilariously presented, yet the flavons were most excellent. Exceptional service from a knowledgeable and gregarious waiter. A total experience start to finish, a must for anyone serious about good food."

  • "This was our first time at Niche and it won't be our last. We were warmly greeted by a gentlemen who was then our efficient and pleasant server. We started with the brioche and the chicken with macaroni and cheese. Both were so good-I could have made that combination my entree. My husband and I both had the monk fish which was delicate and delightful. We did not order dessert but feel I must try next time to see if they're as outstanding as everything else we ate. "

  • "Considering the reviews on open table and the newspapers we expected fine dining. The food was good, but it was a turnoff seeing a server dressed in Levi's and a plaid work shirt carrying a baby through the restaurant and serving food, however our waiter did a fine job. We will not return to this establishment. "

  • "Laura, the hostess and Steve, our waiter were the gems, although a nice job by all of the staff, including those who cleared. Great meal, made to feel welcome & they treated the evening as a special night--which it was! Great job."

  • "Both food and drink options were excellent. I had monkfish, perfectly prepared with grilled broccolini. Others in my party had wine, but I opted for the beer, which was very reasonably priced with many options to choose from. I appreciated that the drinks menu organized all options (wine, beer, etc) into varietals and type first, then ordered each section by price. It made it very easy to find something to fit our budget without having to look too hard over options that we'd never consider. Two out of the 3 desserts ordered were hits -- the creme brulee was the only one that didn't quite match up, a bit overly citrusy, and on the thin side in texture."

  • "Great food served with style. Scallops were done to perfection. Wait staff was short handed but were very friendly and helpful with the menu. Another nice find in geneva."

  • "Wow, where to even begin at how amazing our dinner was at Niche? Start with the amazing ambience...or the staff...wine / cocktail / beer list...food? The location is just off of the main drag and perfect for that hidden nook vibe. Interior is classy and a bit modern without being stuffy. The bar options are stunning, food well exceeded expectations and reminded us of many of the finer restaurants we frequented while living in NYC. Highly recommended and well worth taking some time to enjoy everything!"

  • "To be clear, the food is very tasty and the service is attentive and polished. That being said, there are some simple things that would make it a place to eat whenever you are looking for a "great" dinner that they are not doing. To start with, $7.00 for bread service in a place that has a guest check average near $60 is nonsense, come on chef it's not 1985, the salted Brioche rolls are great but this should be an impressive start to the meal not an appetizer. Speaking of 1985, the portions need a little boost, I left content but every plate that came out was 15% less than it should have been (like eating in a white table cloth circa 1985). Lastly, the service is good but could be so much better if the "attitude" was more welcoming."

  • "This was my first time at Niche. It looked as if the restaurant had been stripped bare (no table decor, very dark interior, no ambiance) and they concocted a special fixed price menu for a last-minute Easter brunch. The service was absolutely superb but here again, it looked as if the staff were told they could wear their own clothes instead of uniforms. Food choices were clever, but taste-wise nothing out of the ordinary and I don't believe warranted the price. I don't think I'll be back -- there's nothing special here aside from the great wait staff. "
