A word from Nice Matin
"Nice Matin, named after the largest daily newspaper in the South of France, gives the Upper West Side a splash of Provençal sunshine and a heady introduction to the cuisine of Nice, home of the pissaladière, pan bagnat and, if we are to believe the menu, a whopping big burger topped with comté cheese, smeared with aioli and served with a heap of rosemary-flecked fries. It's the best thing to happen to a hamburger since Daniel Boulud worked foie gras and short ribs into an all-beef patty. The pleasure is all on the plate, and it carries right through to the desserts.", William Grimes - NY Times.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "This place is incapable of handling a crowd (which is not good in NYC). We have gone when it is slow, and the meals are excellent. But if it is crowded, the place falls apart. Most recently, we went on a Sunday night for dinner. It was miserable. We were seated and it took 30 minutes before someone came to our table to offer bread/water (let alone take an order). It took hours (yes almost three hours) for our entire meal to be served. When my main course came out, it was ice-cold. The manager (who appeared very young and inexperienced) apologized profusely and explained that they were just too crowded. What angers me is that they do not turn people away, yet they really can't handle all of the business they accept. Greedy."

  • "Hit it on the nail. Try the Martini Nicoise. Mellow."

  • "I've been lunching at this restaurant several times a year for at least ten years. The food remains tasty with a judicious use of salt and just the right combination of spices and herbs. When it is crowded, it tends to be noisy so I prefer lunch rather than dinner. The desserts are luscious and the service is attentive without being intrusive. I recommend this restaurant as a great place to meet for those looking for good food and an attractive space full of natural light."

  • "Love the ambience, love the coffee! Delicious food and a bargain on weekdays; includes coffee and fresh berries."

  • "I've loved this place for years, it's what we choose for birthdays and other special occasions, service is great and unobtrusive, wine list is daunting but thankfully their wine sommeliers make it easy when you can't decide, I usually get steak frites, which is great, and the crab app special was amazing !"

  • "How perfectly wonderful to be back at Nice Matin for the second time in a month! The food was just as good as it was the first time we went there. This will definitely be our go-to restaurant when we are in New York."

  • "Stayed at nearby hotel and had breakfast and at least three dinners (mussels, hanger steak, duck), all great. Returned recently for dinner – still very well done. It has a sort of causal but studied ambience."

  • "You said it. Reasonably priced French (Belgian) food. Steak frites, mussels ... fresh bread, a nice glass of wine ... nothing ever goes wrong here."

  • "We go to this place a lot. We always are treated very well and are served excellent food. The menu changes often enough to keep it interesting."

  • "First time dining-loved the decor & overall vibe, food was great!"

  • "We ate from the tapas menu - around a dozen Spanish themed small plates- two classics of which were unavailable mid evening- the Serrano ham and the patatas bravas - which was a disappointment . The sardines, prawns and croquettas dishes were all excellent. To finish off we asked for a Spanish brandy, which could not be had, despite an otherwise stocked bar. So get with the programme, Nicematin and get in a few bottles of Carlos 111 !"

  • "I loved the experience from food to service, kale salad was delicious"

  • "I finally got the opportunity to eat at Nice Matin for the first time this past weekend. The dining room is sophisticated but unpretentious, eclectic but warm. I would highly recommend sitting at one of the banquettes across from the windows; not only can you still see the street, but you can see all the other action around you. The wait staff is most attentive and gracious, and the sommelier is helpful and approachable. The food is all around delicious and well-presented, and the three-course prix fixe menu for $38.00 is hard to beat in NYC. The wine list is obviously heavy on the French side and immense. I definitely recommend making a reservation for dinner, especially on the weekend."

  • "Definitely a restaurant for your go-to list to eat in for good food without the pretense or rip-off."

  • "You can bring a bottle of your own wine for a $35 corkage fee"

  • "With some tasty - but no where near as spectacular - food on the side. Sommelier is as friendly as he is knowledgeable and does not push the expensive bottles. Something unusual and unusually good can be found at all price levels."

  • "This was my third time at this restaurant for lunch. Food is very good, but the service is exceptional. We stayed a very long time due to rain, and the waiter could not have been nicer about it. The restaurant was almost full. Also, they pour a very substantial glass of wine by the glass, a rarity these days. Just a really nice experience all around."

  • "I've eaten here 4 times now and it has been flawless every time. I had one of the Specials this evening, fava bean tortellini. It was amazing as was the vanilla creme Brûlée. Can't wait til my next dinner here."

  • "Always a nice place to sit and eat- they do a very good job, but this time the waiter 'sold' us on a special appetizer that was not available and the escargot were dry- but other than those missteps a very nice evening"

  • "Nice Matin is a great place for breakfast and for breakfast meetings. interesting menu (try the French toast), efficient and pleasant service, reasonable price for what is provided. And good coffee with frequent stealth refills."

  • "Had dinner at this UWS French spot. Very cordial welcome. Food is very good middle of the road, old fashioned bistro fare with an emphasis, as the name would suggest, on the Sourh of France. All dishes were very good, though none were outstanding, with the possible exception of the pistou. An amazing wine list that is reasonably priced (of what passes for reasonable these days). Extremely competent and friendly service."

  • "My wife and I have been here a few times before and returned for my wife's birthday lunch during restaurant week. The food was good, prepared just as stated on the menu. My wife said the duck confit was as good as any she had in France. I had the shrimp and bay scallop noodles which were tasty and full of sea flavor. We forgot to ask that no extra salt be added as many restaurants are too free with the salt and it becomes too salty but their food although salted and garnished with a sprinkle of salt on top was not overly salty. (We still would ask for no added salt as we both have high blood pressure). The staff from front door to waiters and bus persons were all professional with a smile, welcoming."

  • "The food was good and varied, but the table was miniscule and very difficult to get in and out of. The noise level was very high -- tiled floor and no acoustic baffles anywhere. The service was quite good, but everything appeared rushed. Not for a relaxing meal."

  • "I had never been before, never heard of the place altogether but it appears to be a very popular spot. Many people were waiting to be seated and we happened to be the table closest to the reception which got annoying since everyone was hovering. That aside the food was very tasty."

  • "Home of the original Five Napkin Burger. If you love hamburgers - this one is a must. The chocolate cake is pretty good too!"
    Dined on 3/4/2014
  • "The food was far from authentic and it wast was substandard. The service was poor, not understanding you want the wine WITH dinner, not towards the end. So many better French bistros. Pick another."

  • "I have only been at Nice Matin for lunch and brunch. For these meal occasions I highly recommend it. The cheery surroundings lend a pleasant ambiance. The service is friendly and efficient. The food has always been excellent. Their omelettes. burgers and other sandwiches are very tasty. I have had an excellent salmon entree in the past and on this occasion I had a kale salad that was so delicious that I ordered a second one to take home with me for next day's dinner. Will keep coming back and sometime soon will try dinner."

  • "I've eaten here many times, and the food is really good. Sadly, this time, we had some trouble finding our waiter a few times. I couldn't decide on what to order and ended up with the Margherita Pizza. It was spectacular. I gave a taste to friends and both said they'd return just for the pizza."

  • "Sad to say that Nice Matin=disappointment. I love 5 Napkin Burger & have the best service & food there. I expected the same at this sister restaurant. When we arrived we were put in the most cramped table, wedged in a corner. As it turns out it should be called the forgotten table. We had to flag a waiter down to place our wine and food order. After that we never saw a waiter again. 15 mins later our apps arrived, but still no sign of wine or even water that we had asked for. I had to flag someone down to ask about the wine & someone came over a few mins later to say no one ever told him we ordered wine. Apps were yummy, but the rest of the meal was bland. A bus boy waited on us the rest of the meal. He was nice, but the experience was not!"

  • "Had a reservation for 6:30PM for me and my girlfriend. We came about an hour earlier and they gladly accommodated an "open table" for us. I noticed it took a while for our waitress to come to our table. I even made eye contact quite a few times with the waitress, yet she still talked to other waiters. I'm not one to usually wave down a waitress, but I had to in this instance. Service was not that great. Food wise, although they named their burger the "original five napkin burger", my girlfriend and I believe it was way too big. It's sauce was a too much. I ordered grilled lamb, it was good, but room temperature. But there is hope; their ESCARGOT WAS AMAZING! I would give it one more chance. But this was my experience at Nice Matin."

  • "Nice Matin is one of the few French restaurants where the staff really know how the food is prepared, for instance if it's olive oil or butter. The menu has a nice selection of choices, the service is lovely, and the bread is good. I wish the wine by the bottle prices were more in line with the food prices, with wines in the $35-40 dollar category, and not the $75.00 category."

  • "I began with the soupe au pistou, which was glorious. I'd ordered a second dish, so sent the soup away unfinished, with great regret. The following dish, duck liver mousse, was unusual (topped with a wine jelly) and good, but I wish I'd had room for the entire bowl of soup. Nice Matin has a large group of regulars, so the restaurant probably needn't try so hard, but I'm delighted that it does. We had the bad luck of an unusually inattentive waiter. I've been here several times and this was never a problem before. I assume it won't be a problem in the future."

  • "Though the food was up it usual best, on this night both the waiter and sommelier were on top of their game. We always check our wine choices with the sommelier and his counsel is precious . We, always buy the wine but the case for home use. Great meal, great wine, great people , great place."

  • "Food a cut better than Citron, and somewhat broader menu. Service a bit over-enthusiastic, but good. Noise level is a bit daunting; management might consider some noise suppressing measures."

  • "Always good and since it is really close to where I live it is very convenient, but it is also worth a trip there for the food."

  • "Nice prix fixe menu for valentine' s day. Included some nice touches such as roses for the ladies and chocolates. The meal was excellent and the portions were plentiful. The server was a bit gratuitous but pleasant enough and helpful. Overall a veery enjoyable dining experience."

  • "Valentines day, Mothers Day, the big holidays can be risky for good food. Nice-Matin delivered on an excellent meal. They offered a prix-fix which delivered both value and quality food. We had duck, lamb, lobster bisque and seared tuna. All excellent, and served with solid service, in spite of a full house. Like all of the "tour de france" restaurants, Nice-Matin delivers a solid and highly enjoyable experience."
