First time just did "small plates" flights, which were delicious! This time did dinner, which was extraordinarily exceptional. LOVE the decor, the ambience, the attentive and friendly staff, it's just a wonderful place for a dinner where you and your special one can talk and actually hear each other. I would like to replicate ALL the lighting in the place in my apartment. And, of course, have dinner delivered every night from Nica's. Ha ha! Seriously if you have not yet experienced Nica's, DO IT. The wonderful art on display, the always amazing tasty dishes, friendly staff that make you feel like family and variety of both food and drink options make it a group pleaser. The Menage a Trois appetizer is a meal in itself - but has something for everyone to enjoy. I can't say enough about how much I love Nica's - and have recommended it to friends from all over the metro and everyone raves about it and goes back for more!5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMNica's rules againThis was a second visit to Nica's and just like the first--tasty! Three of us enjoyed different items, from appetizers to entrees and there wasn't a bad one in the bunch. Bayou steak, stew, crab over rice cake with slaw, not to mention the bread pudding and a Brie and berry beignet. Oh yes, the sweet potato fries with three dipping sauces was a great starter. The coffee is delicious also. The food is great here. We ordered a pizza and a small plate called "Stewed" and shared both. So good. Also ordered an old fashioned and a plantation julep. Enjoyed them very much. Would have loved to sit on the patio but preferred inside to looking at the urban blight. :). The patio could be dressed up a bit to make it nicer than a slab of concrete between two buildings. However the food is good and interesting, we keep coming back. The only bummer was that the desserts we ordered were somehow cancelled, and by the time our server realized this had happened and re-ordered them, it had been a good 20 minutes. He ended up comping our desserts but the wait was pretty out of control, and then it took another 15-20 minutes after finishing our desserts to get our bill settled. Love the place for its uniqueness. Art on the walls, funky decorating that evokes a bit of NOLA style and interesting music playing. Made reservations and were seated immediately upon arrival. Waitress was great and very informative. Tables are close together which was fine with me and my gf as we enjoyed some conversation and food/drink comparisons with the couple next to us. We had flights of green fairies, bourbon and Irish whiskey, apps, entrees and beignets for desert. Everything was very flavorful, well prepared and nice sized portions. We left with doggie boxes. The menu is rather exotic, New Orleans influence in many of the dishes. Our wait person was terrific at making recommendations, explaining what things were, etc. They have a great beer list, and the appetizers were spectacular, especially the hummus. Dr. John's Risotto was quite spicy, a soft-textured jambalaya. Beignets for dessert, not as great as those in the Cafe du Monde in the French Quarter, but certainly not shabby. I love big flavors and Nica's provided that. It was a combination of spice and sweet that wasn't overpowering, but complimented the food and let the food speak for itself. For dessert, we tried the bread pudding and a tiramisu beignet. We were not disappointed. Both were among the best of either dessert that we had collectively eaten in our lifetimes.
The service was really good. The pace was relaxed, which allowed us to slowly enjoy the experience. We highly recommend Nica's as a great spot for a date night or a night out with friends who love food in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. We thought adding to our reservation could be a bit of a problem, wasn't at all. That's just the type of restaurant they are. Very accommodating! Also, as we all finished dinner my wife and i happen to notice that all the dinner plates were practically licked clean. Amazing! That says a lot right there.
