A word from Ngam
Long ago chef Ngamprom "Hong" Thaimee left her modeling and television work in Thailand and made her way into the world of food, trainining under Thailand's most celebrated chef, M.L. Sirichalerm Savsti. Eventually she came to New York, where Thaimee cooked at Kittichai and Spice Market. She now goes solo at Ngam, which, aside from being her namesake, happens to be the Thai word for beautiful. The Union Square area spot serves updated spins on Thai comfort food, including a tom yum soup with crispy trout, Thai burger with papaya salad, pad Thai with grilled black tiger prawns, and duck larb salad. You'll also find a smaller lunch menu, plus a bar serving wine and beer.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "The squid was amazing. And the sauces were wonderfully spicy."

  • "24 hours later and I want to go back! Great food and selection!"
    Dined on 3/27/2014
  • "Everything is very tasty. Some entrees are a little too salty but still good. Everything is homemade. Only thing is that I found myself having difficult time getting employees attention many times."
    Dined on 3/26/2014
  • "Thai Tea with vodka and surf and turf appetizer are a must! My husband and I ended up splitting three small plates (happy hour specials) with a friend and shared drunken noodles. Everything was delicious! We will be back soon."
    Dined on 3/21/2014
  • "Great resurant...it was cold and the heating sytem was pushing out a wind tunnel of cold air but everything else was amazing!!!"
    Dined on 3/21/2014
  • "I live in London. I would go to New York just to eat at Ngam. In fact, I make sure I do eat at Ngam every time I find I'm passing through New York and it never disappoints. This is exquisitely delicious Thai food, some very traditional but mostly given an inventive new twist for the New York scene. The deep-fried whole sea bass with spicy, zingy dipping sauce was a hit with my 'reformed vegan' just starting to eat fish friend. The Thai-spiced pear with chocolate ganache is unbelievably tasty."

  • "Usually very good, this time, not so much. They've been consistently good in the past, so I'll come back, but I have no idea what happened this week."
    Dined on 3/21/2014
  • "I started with the fantastic pomelo salad. Sweet + savory + fresh = amazing! Then the sweet potato and pumpkin fries, with the two dipping sauces, which were so yummy. Green curry and pad thai was great. House-made lime, honey, mint soda was so refreshing. Service and warm atmosphere was appreciated!"

  • "Great Thai food - lots of GF, veggie options; very good service; nice atmosphere; great to see the owner on the floor, chatting with customers. We'll be back."
    Dined on 3/12/2014
  • "On our travels was recommended this restaurant and we ended up checking it out on our quick stopover. We love thai food and this took it to another level. Vibrant flavours, great spicy level, wide selection that makes you cry because you can't get them all. And best of all, the prices were fair. We had the Lamb Roti, Thai Tacos, Tom Soup, Beet Dumplings. They were very accommodating and the wild ambiance is exactly what i like. The long table looked like a fun option for big groups."

  • "Go to Ngam. It's delicious, different, centrally-located, and unbelievably well-priced. If you want Thai, they perfect your favorite dishes. If you don't, grab the burger, which is also just awesome."
    Dined on 3/1/2014
  • "The staff was really sweet, but the food was not good. Their Pad Thai was soggy, and their zucchini pad thai smelled funny."
    Dined on 2/28/2014
  • "Considering the renaissance of authentic regional Thai cuisine in NYC for the past few years, I would say that this place's renown and popularity are both a bit undeserved. I found the food slightly underwhelming. The "pad thai" dishes where vegetables such as zucchini or green papaya that have been julienned stand in for noodles need to go."
    Dined on 2/18/2014
  • "Went for dinner with my boyfriend and it was great! Modern Thai food. The place is a little small but brightly lit and nicely decorated. Waiter was awesome, very friendly. Good prices."

  • "Delicious and fun. Innovative and healthy. Can't wait to go back."

  • "We had great food, prompt and courteous service. There is a good selection of items on the menu, and you can find something whether you are just an Asian food lover, vegtarian, allergic or on a low carb diet. We went there during happy hour which gives you plenty of value for money both on food and drinks. Will definitely come back!"

  • "YUM! This place was so so delicious. Such a great variety of food and the squid ink dish called The Dark Night is just amazing. Our server did mess up one of our orders and we never got our food but overall the food was great and this is a cute little shop in the EV. I've already ordered delivery several times!"

  • "Time Out NY listed them as one of the top Thai restaurants in the city. Was a little let down. Nothing was bad, but nothing was outstanding."
    Dined on 2/17/2014
  • "This restaurant is a great modern take on thai food. The good alone is well worth the visit, but the ambience makes the restaurant that much cooler!! From the shared long table down the middle (which I sat at) to the more intimate tables along the wall. I loved the exposed brick and the glowing love sign across from the kitchen! The food came out quick and everything was delicious! I definitely recommend the spring rolls and the fries!"
    Dined on 2/11/2014
  • "I've had brunch and dinner there. Food was excellent for both. Definitely one of my favorite place now. Service was really good too."
    Dined on 2/11/2014
  • "Great food. Great service. Probably great ambiance on a warm day. But when we went it was freezing inside! Very uncomfortable. But the pomelo salad was exquisite. A burst of brightness on a dreary day. Absolutely gorgeous."
    Dined on 2/12/2014
  • "Excellent food and excellent drinks. One member of the party was late, and they were more than happy to save our table until his appearance - and always extremely friendly. The only slight negative is that the server was unfamiliar with the choice of drinks, but this is a minor quibble."

  • "Ngam was recommended by a friend who had eaten here the weekend before when I was craving Thai food so I quickly made a reservation. We got the mushroom spring rolls, authentic pad thai and zucchini pad thai. The food was good but nothing special and overpriced for what we ordered. The wine portions were also really stingy which was a bummer and shocking to see how much we actually got. Service at Ngam was nice and our waitress was attentive so no complaints there. If you live in the neighborhood or are around there and need a place to eat it is a solid but don't expect to be blown away. Overall, glad I went, not a waste of $ but I likely will not be back."

  • "I often bring friends to this little East Village place - the food is distinctly Thai, yet pretty creative at the same time, and the kitchen caters well to their health-conscious foodie clientele with zucchini and papaya noodles, beet dumplings and the like. The food is always delicious and the ambiance is upbeat and cheerful."

  • "food is delicious - fresh take on thai. i would recommend this place for any occasion"

  • "I've been to a lot of Thai restaurants in the city and this is by far the best. The pumpkin/sweet potato fries are an absolute must for a starter dish to share. You really can't go wrong with any of the pad thai dishes either! It's a great place for a date or just a night out with your friends. The ambience is just the perfect mix of lively and romantic. Highly recommended!"

  • "Very good pad thai, Thom Kha, and Kale Fried Rice!"
    Dined on 1/22/2014
  • "Thought we had good Thai food where we come from, but this bustling little place really gave the taste buds a jolt. The small plates we had were all extremely tasty, well seasoned, bursting with flavour. Special notables were the beef salad and the meaty chicken wings. The Pad Thai and curry were a bit tame by comparison, and could have used a bit more zip. The busboy we had totally outshone the waitress in regard to attentiveness and courtesy. Only problem was an intense garlic mouth the next morning. Would definitely return next time in NYC."

  • "It was good. Food is delicious - though a bit overpriced. Seriously $ +4 for shrimp?! That's a bit much, no? Overall they have interesting mixes and will definitely come here again. Try their spinach side and come for their brunch :)"

  • "We found this restaurant looking for places that cater for the gluten free. It didn't disappoint - tasty food, good service, really cool place. Gluten free things are marked on the menu and it was nice to have such great choice. Definitely recommend booking ahead!"

  • "After reading the Times and Village Voice reviews, we were prepared to be blown away. If this is the best Thai restaurant in NYC right now, we've got problems. Food is inventive, yes, and ingredients thoughtful and we'll-sourced. But to our table of 4, it felt like everything came steeped in sugarcane, obscuring other favors and hurting the texture of the food. Ventilation system also needs work, we felt like we were sitting in front of a fan. On a high note, lunch specials are a great deal. But bring a toothbrush"
    Dined on 12/30/2013
  • "Very disappointed this time. While the food was good their menu has changed and not for the better. Their blowers were on making almost anywhere you sat a drafty experience. They explained it was for the kitchen staff but it also was responsible fot bringing cool to cold dishes to the table. Won't go back anymore."
    Dined on 12/20/2013
  • "... and not in a good way, unfortunately. I brought someone here on a first date. We ordered the green curry shrimp and the lamb massaman. The green curry shrimp was okay, i've had better. The lamb was unflavorful and bland. I expected so much more and was disappointed."
    Dined on 12/9/2013
  • "The food was superb!! My only recommendation would be for them to offer more variations on spice level for the entrees. I ordered the black knight with calamari which was a spicier dish. It's perfect you usually like spicier entrees. The atmosphere is great for casual dates."
    Dined on 12/22/2013
  • "We had spring roll, papaya pad thai and lamb something, with lychee mojito. All suprised me with good taste."
    Dined on 12/20/2013
  • "Must try the Thai Burger...it was suprisingly delicious!!!"
    Dined on 4/27/2013
  • "I had my birthday dinner here on a friday night and it was a great experience. I was impressed with the service which was attentive and patient. We had a rather large party that included a baby, dinner ran longer we expected and they didn't rush us. The food was also wonderful, I highly recommend the chicken wing appetizer and the pad see ew. Will definitely be back here again."

  • "Off to a bad start when, despite having a reservation, we were told we would have a significant wait or could perch at the bar. We opted for the latter and spent a mediocre meal being jostled by others waiting for their overdue reservations. To top it off I got a 'no show' from the restaurant! OpenTable fixed that quickly but I guess it just shows this restaurant is chaotic. The food isn't so good, the service is dreadful and the whole experience overpriced."

  • "excellent food all around...we were large party of 8 and while this is not traditional thai, everything was excellent. good value for money. many of us agreed we would be back."
    Dined on 12/2/2013
  • "This gem takes me back to the land I love every time I visit. The fresh ingredients are expertly mixed and the atmosphere is local and 'warm'. Since I can't get to Thailand as much as I would like these days, I'm happy to know this restaurant is close by."
