Our server John was outstanding. He was professional, very pleasant, knowledgeable and attentive. Our food was expertly prepared and beautifully presented. There were only a couple of small snafus. There was no soy milk for one of the diners at our table who had ordered coffee and who can't have dairy and I was told that the waiter had to "find" honey for my tea. We were having such a nice experience that this didn't really bother us but we had a chuckle at the irony. The room we were in was beautifully appointed and the atmosphere was perfect. The food was delicious as it has been in the past - top quality seafood and steaks. True to form, when the Wegman family does something, they do it right. The menu was large and diverse enough to have provide several acceptable choices.
The only negative is the noise level. The main dining room was full and quite noisy. We asked to be seated in the quieter dining room, which the hosted very politely did. From pizza and burgers, to steaks and sushi all proteins are of the highest quality & organic. However, I was a bit disappointed with the menu changes, as more than a few of my favorites were gone. I also wasn't crazy with the explanation that it was to provide healthier choices?? Honestly? I would have preferred to hear that some items just weren't that popular. I felt like it was the government chosing my meals for me (like the big gulp fiasco in nyc or posting of nutritional value at fast food restaurants). The greeter did not seem as attentive as I would have expected. The matre d' did her job in an efficient and helpful manner (asked for and immediately received reseating next to prep area.) The water server was friendly, prompt and perfectly attentive to water glass needs. The meal server was friendly, efficient and more than helpful ( I had a special request for smoked oysters and the server obtained a prompt answer on my request.) The server's patience and timing was very much on mark according to my parties' meal pace. The appy came well within a convenient time frame. The appy plate take-away was right on time; not too soon nor too late after the appy was finished. No salmon anywhere could have been cooked as perfectly as Next Door! The mixed drinks at the bar change regularly, but they know their guest's favorites and keep those on the menu. The dining room is great with the options of eating at the prep kitchen and watching the chefs, a semi-private dining room with a large table for groups, the test kitchen, and the main dining room. The servers are professional, knowledgeable, and attentive. The food was fantastic! I had the house-made fettuccine and my husband had the black bass. Both meals were excellent and very much enjoyed.
This is a great place for a night out, to meet friends for drinks, or to celebrate a special occasion. Unfortunately, the ambiance was crummy where we were seated--we were in a little side room that was setup like your own dining room, replete with a large dining room style table and three tiny little tables (one of which we were seated at). It felt like everyone was on top of each other and there was no privacy/intimacy. Not good ambiance. The rest of the restaurant is very cool. They could restyle this room with high-back chairs instead of the giant dining room table to create more private feeling personal nooks.
