Diner Reviews
  • "Awesome food and awesome service. The crispy potato salad app and pork tenderloin entree were amazing."

  • "The restaruant participated in the Charlotte Queens Fest. We chose it because it was close to home. Very impressed with everything. Service staff were attentive and friendly. Food was excellent and thr prices were quite reasonable (and not just the Queens Fest menu). Realy felt like this would be a great place for an occasional casual dinner, special event or just a visit to the bar and the small plate menu. First time visit but certainly won't be the last."

  • "What a surprise! We decided to check out New South during restaurant week and ended up loving the food. All of the items are garnered locally and made with a flavorful flare. This will definitely be added to our rotation. The only negative is the 96.5 sanitation rating posted. We are going to inquire the next time out why it is so low..."

  • "We've been here many times over the past few years. Always excellent food and service. They have innovative approaches to traditional southern fare, and the ambience is good. Highly recommend it."

  • "I dined at New South during the Queens Feast Restaurant Week. I really enjoyed the menu (and the glass of wine that was included). I made a reservation and arrived EARLY and was seated 30 minutes LATE. It wasn't even too crowded. My friend went the following evening and shared the same experience. Our waitress was helpful and kind but the food came out kind of staggered and it was a little awkward. My date's appetizer got cold while she waited for mine to arrive, not wanting to be rude and eat before I had food. Overall though, for restaurant week the food was great and obviously the pricing was affordable. I'll be back, but hopefully with a little smoother service."

  • "Terribly understaffed for restaurant week. Food was good, but bartender was not able to keep up with orders. Long wait to get a drink. Waiter seemed rushed and forgot what we ordered. Also had to wait for a table even with a reservation. Good for the restaurant but bad for the customer."

  • "My husband and I have been to New South several times and have always had a great experience. We went with two other couples this past Saturday night, during Queen's Feast, and you can tell the waiters, nor the cooks were prepared. Our waiter was running around from table to table. You could tell he was panicked. He was trying really hard though, so I will give him that. But our drinks, bread, and several other things definitely suffered. The flavor of the food was fantastic, but every single person's food was room temp. The plate was hot, but the food was not. So you could tell it was sitting on a hot plate, waiting to come to our table. Everyone's fish was undercooked big time as well! Like I said, usually great though."

  • "The menu was excellent for restaurant week! I couldn't believe my favorites were actually included on the menu. The service was a little slow, but this is not the norm. The place was packed and the server was having a difficult time keeping up. We waited and had to remind her a couple times to bring us things. We love this restaurant, because the chef, Chris is always coming up with delicious, creative ways to present local food bought from local farmers and merchants. We also love it because we can have an actual conversation and hear each other!"

  • "While at first the table seemed to almost be in the pathway of the door, we slide it over and it felt more comfortable. Margarita was perfect. The pork tenderloin and sauce with it was amazing. Fried Okra salad was a big hit."

  • "My husband and I have been to New South many times, but this past time that we went was the best so far, from the cocktails to the dessert. I LOVE fried chicken, but I never can find good fried chicken anywhere. I had the Chicken & Waffles and it was unbelievably delicious. The chicken was just like my grandmother used to make every Sunday! I honestly can't say enough good things!"

  • "A wonderful variety of southern faves "done up." Always good."

  • "I was entertaining a few colleagues from out of town and wanted to take them out for a dinner that "would not disappoint". I was looking to impress by having a good meal and good conversation, not extravagant spending. The selection of appetizers and entrees gave everyone the opportunity to enjoy a southern favorite prepared in an update to date fashion."

  • "Can't wait to go back...food was great, even the grass-fed burgers!! Derrick was a standout service provider and had a smile that shows he genuinely cares about you having a great time!"

  • "The Parm zucchini fries were amazing as were our entrees of Pan fried chicken and Pork Tenderloin. The risotto was crunchy and not very flavorful was my only food complaint. The fried blueberry pie was also wonderful. My only other complaint was when the server asked if we needed change when taking the cash and the bill, which I think is rude. The proper thing to say would be, "I'll be right back with your change." And, if the change is for you, the guest will let you know."

  • "Wonderful restaurant. I have never had a dish I didn't care for! We take out-of-town guests here often and they have all enjoyed the food."

  • "Server was very helpful working with one guest who has very dangerous food allergies."

  • "Delicious food, very good knowledgeable wait staff. Unique menu offerings. Our table tried: the trout appetizer, the Cesar salad, spicy shrimp, the okra salad and the black and blue burger with fries -- all were wonderful. Our waiter was great."

  • "We had guests visiting from Paris and had planned a bon voyage lunch at one of our favorite restaurants. We had confirmed reservations via Open Table, but when we arrived at the restaurant there was a sign on the door saying it was closed for lunch. Needless to say, we were extremely disappointed and had to drive to another part of town for lunch. "

  • "Five of us dined for dinner at New South on Mother's Day. We ordered four different small plates to start, and we all sampled this delightful assortment. Our entrees were delicious, and I especially enjoyed my pork chop. If you think a pork chop can't be exciting, think again. This one was thick, tender, moist and very flavorful. Coupled with killer collard greens and a great risotto mixture, this pork chop was a real treat. We were not first timers at New South, and once again they lived up to their usual excellence."

  • "My wife and I came here a few years ago and it was just okay. On a spur of the moment we decided to go back a few months ago. I don't know what has changed but the food is down right AWESOME! We have been going back there every other week. I get the southern pan fried chicken breast and my wife has gotten the special every time. The pan fried chicken breast reminds me of a dish from charleston. It's very lightly breaded if and served over southern grits and a vegatable of your choice. New south is in or rotation from here on out."

  • "Always enjoy dinner at New South. The restaurant setting is nice -- not high energy, elegant of romantic but more of the place to go for a comfortable, friendly place. The pulled pork appetizer is great - interesting presentation and the sauce provides a nice gentle kick. We had the Monkfish special and it was delicious. Perfectly cooked and great flavor and texture. The chicken is always good. For dessert, both the blueberry pie and the pecan pie bread pudding are excellent. "

  • "not a big menu...but wonderful southern food with an updated flare. All locally grown veggies and proteins. Fried green tomatoes, mac n cheese, pan fried chicken, collards....all outstanding. Small plates and big plates too! Bread pudding dessert is yummy!"

  • "We have lived in Charlotte for 20 years and just Friday discovered New South through Open Table. We had an amazing meal, great service in a comfortable atmosphere. Fried green tomatoes were awesome. Our server was great. Real nice atmosphere at the bar and next time we will come earlier for a drink. Will be sharing our great experience with friends!"

  • "Farm to fork fresh ingredients truly make this place special. I had the chicken and waffles; the dish washer could have mistaken my plate for clean. I can't wait to try the pork chops and the shrimp & grits."

  • "Regional influence present; however, it is subtle in both ingredients and cooking style. Salad of local greens with toasted pumpkin seeds and light viniegrette was one of the best salads ever. Main was good but a bit dizzy with ingredients, which kept me guessing. Interesting menu, we can't wait to go back for more!"

  • "Five of us....everyone raved about the food. Service was very good. Serves craft beer and for those under age.....Cheerwine! We will be back...great spot..."

  • "The service was great. I had the shrimp and grits. It was good, not too rich, but a little salty. My friend had the flounder and loved it. The Caesar salad was good but way too much of it. Would have liked a smaller side salad."
    Dined on 3/25/2014
  • "The food was very tasty. Service was attentive. I was pleasantly surprised that the food was not greasy like some southern foods can be. If you are a vegetarian there are many choices for you."

  • "We love New South Kitchen! Great farm to table restaurant with an excellent menu of small plates and entrees. Try the trout dip to start. Nice wine menu, too; not overwhelming but a selection of good wines."

  • "The food was good , but on the high end price wise for meatloaf and turkey dinners. The service was a bit slow but we were not in a hurry."

  • "Food was excellent and all locally sourced. I had the special of mustard encrusted tilefish. Perfectly cooked and seasoned. The cheese selection was also good, particularly the white cheddar. Service was excellent. Very knowledgeable about the offerings. Will definitely go back."

  • "My girlfriend and I had a late reservation for valentines day and we both were pleasantly surprised with our meals. We started with pulled pork egg rolls which were tasty, the sauce made it even better. For our main course we had the short ribs and pan fried chicken. We enjoyed them so much we had to share our meals. This is great tasting southern food. The only thing we didn't care for was the mac n cheese. They used penne pasta and the cheese was scarce. Service was slow but it was busy. We are definite coming back."
