A word from New Mill Restaurant
Plantsville's well-known Old Mill is now New Mill Restaurant, featuring the culinary talents of its new Executive Chef, Bob Martucci. This lovely 1737 cider mill has been a Connecticut favorite for many years, and has now completely renovated by its owners, Chris and Michelle Calvanese. Menu specialties include fresh-only seafood and raw bar selections, "chop house" Angus steaks, and homemade pastas and desserts. An expanded wine list and a large sociable bar round out the new offering.Continued

The reason very drafty and right next to a group of diners that were exuberant! The service was excellent and the food was very good and the presentation was great.   • "Consistent with our previous experiences, the food and service were right on target. The lobster encrusted talapia and the veal chop were prepared very well. We sat in the dining area off the bar overlooking a very small pond with an old grist mill in view. We ate on the earlier side than usual, so more kids made the noise level a little higher but this did not detract from the over all good experiences."

  • "Food was good (filet mignon and penne vodka with chicken) but brought an out of town friend there, so I made reservations online 4 days in advance and filled out the "special request" section to ask that we be placed in a quiet section -- I stated please do not put us near the kitchen, busy traffic area or the door. I even said "please". So when we get there, we are placed towards the middle of the room, near the cash register and bottom of the stairs in the banquet room where there is heavy traffic and noise. We had to ask to be moved, which didn't seem to make folks happy, but we were finally moved. I cannot help but wonder if they did that when they saw two women. Otherwise service and food was tasty."

  • "This is by far our favorite local restaurant. I am more about ambiance and a good wine menu and my husband is more about the food and this place makes us both happy! I love the dim lighting, the unique decor, the way it's set up for seating in all different nooks and crannies, the bar area is pretty, it has that earthy stone wine cellar type feel to it which I love and in the summer they have nice, picturesque outdoor seating. The food is consistently good. We have never had a bad meal or even a so-so meal there. They change up the menu now and then which is nice too. They have a great variety which I like. I think I have tried it all now and liked it all equally. The waitstaff has always been pleasant too."

  • "I recently took my daughter, her boyfriend, and my son (all in their 20's) for dinner to celebrate my daughter's college graduation. My reservation request had asked for a table in a quieter section of the restaurant, and was pleasantly surprised to find a corner booth waiting for us. The "Old Mill" had been a favorite of my parents (both nearing 80) during their dating era, and they were excited to hear about the "New Mill" after my dining experience. All of the positives that they talked about from the past have carried over to todays version of this establishment. Depending on the dish, the food went from very good to exceptional. I loved my salmon dish, which was infused with a ginger wasabi glaze. Return trips are planned."

  • "This restaurant has been a successful, local business with a good reputation. We visited on a Thursday night for a special birthday celebration. The service was slow to average. Three people in our party ordered the "new mill" chicken. Two substituted the roasted potatoes for a potato cake. The one dish that came with roasted potatoes should have changed also. The roasted potatoes came out black and hard. We were surprised it was served that way. I asked the server to return them to the chef , to show him what left the kitchen. She never returned with a response nor did anyone from the restaurant make any attempt to apologize. The vegetables were hard and dry. That chicken dish was very salty."

I ordered the chicken and shrimp picatta and found the chicken to definitely be over salted. I think it would have been very good with the vegetables they served, if it hadn't been for all the salt. We have brought our small child twice and the noise helps draw attention away from her exuberant voice. Excellent service and nice decor. Need a reservation."

  • "We'd eaten at here numerous times when it was the Old Mill. A few years ago it was renovated and renamed the New Mill. We tried it after it re-opened and was disappointed that the menu was different and the food was disappointing. A year later our daughter invited us to dinner there and, again, the food was a disappointment. We tried it again on 1/11/14. Our waitress was very friendly but....my Margarita was served in a beer glass. My fish was so-so, potatoes great, asparagus tough and undercooked. My wife's pasta dish was disappointed as she had requested that they cook the bacon crispy. It was nowhere near crispy so we think her request never made it to the kitchen. We won't be going back ever again. We miss the OLD Mill!"

There was not enough staff on and in the beginning of May who would have thought it would be so busy. The food was good so I'll hold my thoughts until I go back, which I will."

My husband got their special NY Strip and he actually couldn't finish it all and had leftovers it was so big. I had the Chicken and Shrimp Piccata. Excellent!   • "Overall we had a great experience. We had a group of six of very outspoken colleagues. Our waitress, Maddison was perfect for us and tolerated quite a bit. The food was amazing! Calamari, Broccoli Rabe and Antipasto plate. The Lobster crusted Talapia overwhelmed us all! If you are with a loud group, request a more secluded spot than the sun room as to not disturb others. GREAT!!!"

  • "Fabulous Christmas decorations with flocked greenery makes this the only place we want to go for our Christmas get together. Food is wonderful. Had the Maple Glazed Pork Chop with roast potatoes and very nice mixed vegetable. The pork chop was almost 3 inches thick and cooked to perfection. Was wonderfully moist and seasoned just right. I couldn't eat it all and brought it home. It even heated up moist and juicy from my microwave. The other diners had the Salmon with Wasabi and they all loved it. Prices are a little on the high side but we don't mind for our Christmas get together. We also had a very attentive waitress who was around when you needed her and had a great personality."
