Diner Reviews
  • "Visited twice this summer, this is a lovely place on the grounds of the Cloisters museum. There are tables inside as well as covered and uncovered outdoor dining. The food is very fresh, salads are so good they do not need dressing, and portions are normal sized, not too much and not too little. Cocktails are a bit pricey but creative and good. Had the "s'mores for two" one visit, it was kind of fun toasting marshmallows on the little candle flame at this beautiful woodsy restaurant hidden in upper Manhattan, although the s'mores did not taste as god as the real thing, the ambiance made it worth it."

  • "My wife and I had wonderful evening at New Leaf. Starting with the friendly staff who made us feel welcome at our arrival and served us with well throughout. No rushing but no overly long waits between courses either. Our waiter (Matthew) answered our questions and was attentive without being intrusive. We enjoyed everything about our experience and hope to return soon."

  • "We always enjoy New Leaf for special and not so special occasions. Good choices of meals and wait staff is always friendly. Even the wild life adds to the charm. The only problem is lack of parking. We wish the Parks Department would open up more spaces."

  • "Big problem parking for dinner there is very limited parking nearby. We had to drive around & wait for a spot to open in front of the restaurant, otherwise we were told we would have to park elsewhere(far away) & walk!! One person got the wrong order & it took so long to get the correct dinner that everyone else had finished. No compensation was made, although the server apologised for the long wait. Prices too high for what you get."

  • "I had heard about this restaurant 2 years ago while listening to WOR. I made a promise to myself to get there. I finally had the chance! I was not disappointed! The view are magnificent, the gardens are charming. I felt like we were in Paris.. Together with my young adult children we shared a beautiful meal and drinks to celebrate my sons 32nd birthday. They loved traveling by subway from work to arrive at a restaurant surrounded by these magnificent gardens and view!! The food was delicious and the service was very attentive. I will go back again!,"

  • "This delightful restaurant is tucked into Fort Tryon Park. Keep going on the access road and you will come upon it. The setting is delightful. Big airy white tent with tables set far apart. You are not having dinner with folks at the next table. Food is very good, not quite great. Lot's of vegetables and good basic protein dishes. Hangar steak has a good cabernet sauce and is done exactly as you order it. Heirloom tomato salad has an abundance of many hued original tomatoes at peak of ripeness. We had only ony dessert between us and it was the spectacular item of the evening. Chocolate Silk is the name-a really dark deep chocolate mousselike confection and a deep, dark chocolate "brownie." This is what chocolate desserts should be."

  • "Beautiful location in Fort Tryon Park in an old stone building. Service excellent;staff very accommodating. Live music adds to the dining experience. Menu and food gets more interesting with each visit."

  • "Beautiful, lush setting in Fort Tryon Park with very good food (better than most!). We sat in the outdoor patio under the tent, and the kids could get up and explore the surrounding woods when they got restless. Good for a special occasion or just when you want a down-to-earth, satisfying dining experience in a beautiful setting."

  • "We were party of five on out way to the Cloisters. We knew of New Leaf but never been there. We were seated outdoors, under the tent. The menu, although limited, offered an appealing choice. The service was friendly and efficient, and our entrees were first rate. A minor complaint--my cheeseburger (beef) had an aftertaste I didn't recognize and would have preferred without. Overall, the setting was charmingly bucolic, the atmosphere calming and relaxing, the food, wine selections and service highly satisfying. Prices on the expensive side, but not unreasonable considering the quality of the experience. Downside, we were given wrong directions from the A train and had to call three times before we found the restaurant."

  • "An unexpected oasis on the way back from the Cloisters. It exceeded my expectations on all counts as a great place to take out of town guests for lunch!"

  • "we had a nice lunch at New Leaf and ate outside. The ambiance, beautiful stone building, and feel of the park were very enjoyable. It feels like you are not on Manhattan any more. The food was solid and the service was friendly and attentive. Overall, a nice gem to go eat!"

  • "The restaurant was nearly empty. It was impossible to get ahold of them on the phone earlier in the day. We ate outside. The fans were noisy. The landscaping needed pruning and mulch. The food was edible but nothing delicious. I would not recommend going there even though it is so convenient to The Cloisters."

  • "New Leaf always delivers a charming evening or brunch. The food is solid, although not exceptional. The setting, and ambiance are charmed, however - plus they have jazz on Friday evenings. Highly recommended"

  • "Simply wonderful park restaurant. Delicious, varied, fresh food, full of flavor (my most important criterion), inventive. Stupendous location, nestled in a small grove on the top of a hill in the Cloisters' neighbor Fort Tryon Park. Pavilion open on all sides, covered, light breeze, fantastic view of the lights of the city facing east. Lovely service, informal and attentive, not intrusive. Beauty everywhere, magnificent view. The dream of what an outdoor park restaurant should be."

  • "We'd been to this restaurant a couple of years ago and liked it. I was surprised this time that the lunch menu has been charged to a pre-fixe brunch. Nevertheless, the steak sandwich, crabcake platter and oyster po-boy were great. My husband is a vegan and his vegetable pilaf was lacking (it needed more vegetables). The location was a big draw for us this time as we were meeting our friends from Germany here."

  • "This is a wonderful neighborhood restaurant in Fort Tryon Park. The park itself is a neighborhood gem, mature trees, spring flowers, great walking paths. The restaurant is in a restored stone building, and a very large more-or-less permanent "tent" that allows for dining in the "outdoors." Generally we have enjoyed this restaurant; however, recent (6/6/14) evening the service was less than stellar. It was quite busy, but mediocre service, never-the-less. The initial round of rolls were late in coming. The pasta dish was advertised with morels, but they had to be requested. When my second cocktail finally came it was the wrong one. When refused, the staff insisted that I take it as free. Finally, it was necessary to forcefully refuse it. "

  • "A beautiful, tranquil spot. We had a simple but really delicious lunch (salmon for me, shrimp salad for ny friend) in a perfect setting. The service was good, restaurant quiet so that we dould have another ylass of wine and catch up. Delightful spot"

  • "I had been to this restaurant several and took 3 of my friends there for lunch as we were going to the Cloisters for an afternoon outing. It was a beautiful day and we opted to sit outside which was actually on the patio and covered. The covering unfortunately was plastic and it got very warm inside it, and because it was a clear plastic the sun made it very uncomfortable even to see as it worked it's way over to our table. The sun never reached the tables on the other side of the patio and I think the hostess should have known what was going to happen and we should have been seated where the shade would remain as those tables were empty when we arrived. We would have enjoyed our meal much more if we weren't so uncomfortable. "

  • "This is a lovely restaurant and we've been going since it first opened -- for its ambience and caring service -- and later for the quality of its' food. This Thursday, our party of 4 -- not there since January -- experienced a radically different restaurant. Ambience still lovely, but very slow service (friendly but unhelpful) and mediocre food. Best example: an okay tapenade appetizer served with half a baguette instead of the flat bread listed on the menu. When asked, server, later, sent 4 small pieces of pita to the table. Branzino came drowned in a pool of oily sauce. Did chef leave?"

  • "New Leaf is a lovely escape from the city. Our table was right next to an open door framing lush green trees. The Open Table reservation was limited to 7:00 p.m. but we arrived earlier and were seated immediately. While New Leaf's menu is somewhat limited, the food is delicious and attractively plated. Bread was crusty and flavorful--always a good sign that you are in good hands for the dinner to come. Our server, Ed, was smart, friendly, and accommodating. At the end of our meal he generously brought us two glasses of champagne to toast our anniversary. We walked back to the 190th St. Subway Station where we took the A train home along a beautifully planted garden path--a sweet end to a romantic celebration."

  • "I lost one of my best friends. The one I turned to for serenity, warmth and beauty in the midst of a tough city. After a much longer hiatus than usual, I returned to New Leaf expected a beautiful outdoor terrace, great food and the waitstaff I have seen monthly for over a decade. Instead I found a bad wedding caterer. Terrace covered with an awful tent, bland and poorly cooked food, novice staff except for the wonderful maitre'd. I don't plan to return. Maybe winter. If they get a new chef. Sigh."

  • "After reading other recent reviews I was a little worried, but our experience at New Leaf was excellent. The food was delicious and the service was very good. Aside from a slow drink delivery to start the evening, service was great. Food was perfectly seasoned and cooked, and seemed a little more interesting than the last time we ate there."

  • "We made the trek from lower Manhattan to traverse the Ft Tryon Gardens and look over the Hudson--magnificent!! What we didn't expect was to find a gem of a restaurant at New Leaf. Somewhat limited menu and drinks but fair price and exceptionally fresh and tasty food combinations. We'll definitely be back!"

  • "The New Leaf now has a tent set up over the outside tables in case of bad weather. I felt it really took away from the ambience. Could not see the beautiful scenery, and there was no airflow. Tent was not very attractive in the daytime. I hope they consider taking it down. Also, there is not enough staff. My party of 5 was sitting at the bar waiting for our reserved table, and the bartender was too busy to get us a drink. He acknowledged us, but there was only one bartender fmaking drinks for the whole restaurant. We were there for 15 minutes. On this occasion the service was not very good at the table. My guest got her coffee after 15 minutes of requesting it - long after dessert was finished. ."

  • "We were really excited to try the New Leaf, but unfortunately we came away very disappointed. When we arrived, the hostess disappeared for 5 minutes with no information. When she returned, she dropped us at our table with menus and said, 'Ok. Thanks,' and walked away. Then our server didn't come for 10 mins. One of our party asked for an iced tea and never got it until she asked twice. Our food was meh and the service deteriorated from there. The manager explained they were short staffed and said he would reduce the bill by half, but when the bill came he had only taken off the appetizers. When we asked him, he said half was too much and we should be happy he took off the appetizers. He yelled at my friend's mother. Overall: very poor."

  • "We had been looking forward to dining at the New Leaf for quite a while but our experience was not what we expected. The food was good overall and the view and ambience was great but the service was sloppy. We "cooled our heels" before our orders were taken. We waited a while until our drinks and food arrived. The coffee was served either lukewarm or cold. When fresh coffee came, we were told that "the delay was due to needing to brew more coffee". It tasted like "dishwater", i.e., not fully brewed and light. We gave up coffee, paid our bill and left. (We were given a discount off our bill for their misdeeds... But our thirst for going to the New Leaf was gone)! What a waste of the site and the view. "

  • "Another perfect evening at the New Leaf. The seared scallop appetizer was exceptional. Article char and steaks were cooked perfectly. Our waiter was a bit too enthusiastic but never rushed us and was right there when we needed him. "

  • "Went for a friend's birthday on a Sunday evening. Service was slow and we had to wait quite a while for our entrees because there was a large group party there. We were fortunate to get our cocktails, appetizers and bread to tide us over. Our server was pleasant and updated us on the situation. We were comped our coffees/teas for the wait. The birthday celebrant ordered the donuts with bourbon sauce for dessert and they did a lovely job presenting it. The restaurant is in a lovely setting and worth a visit if you are visiting the Cloisters and Fort Tryon Park."

  • "The environment was great, the outdoor seating was nice, and the Friday night jazz band was excellent, but we were unimpressed with the entrees, specifically the chicken and the pasta. The taste was just not great. We were expecting better. "

  • "The setting was very nice. When it's warmer and they can open up the terrace, I'm sure it's wonderful. The food was good. The service was A-T-R-O-C-I-O-U-S!!!! It took away any good feelings we might have had about dining there. There is no reason to schlep that far for a meal if the service is that bad. If I could give them no stars for service, I would."

  • "A lovely venue, friendly, attentive staff, but the food is just not that great. Ordered the scallop appetizer to share with a friend and there were two scallops on the plate. They were well-done as we'd asked but so salty we could barely stand them. Our hangar steak was ok, not melt-in-your mouth. So, I don't think I will go back. Really over-priced and not a satisfying meal. "

  • "The service was absolutely HORRIBLE! The wait staff paid no attention to us. 20-25 minutes for drinks...One waiter brought out a dessert menu before we had our entree's. "
