  • "I first discovered Nerai when my company chose it for lunch. It was so good, I came for dinner. I returned because the service and staff is outstanding. The waiter knew the wine I like from my last visit-how good is that! While lunch is a little slow to get food and the menu isn't as exciting, the dinner is fantastic. Either way, you have to get the grilled octopus. Crab cakes is all crab, and the sauce is killer. IMHO, the mark of a good restaurant is the ability to do the simple food really well. Our whole fish was great (we shared) Stand out dessert is custard fillo, and baklava...more filo! The greeks know what to do with fillo."

The bread was delicious and the fish was impeccably fresh. A definite repeater. Well worth the price. Highly recommend!"

  • "The restaurant is very modern and pretty. Went for a business lunch. Was there almost 2 hours because of the service. Prix Fixe lunch is a good price with lots of choices. Calamari was very tasty but tough. Lamb burger tastes great. Except is came very rare. I was OK with that but my friend was not. It took almost 10 minutes to get someone's attention to send it back. Also, they need to add more sauce to the burger. Wait staff has perfected talking by the bar or walking by without making any eye contact. We sat for another 10 minutes before I could snag someone to pick up our obviously done lunch plates. Food is good but staff needs to be talked to about service."

  • "My girlfriend and I went to Nerai earlier this week. We have been here a few times and have yet to be disappointed. We started with a few drinks, I had the Thymari. The apps have always been a standout. We split the Chips Nerai and the Grilled Octopus. Beware - the chips are dangerously good. They are thin and very crisp. For our entrees we had the lamb chops and short rib. Both dishes are absolutely amazing. I personally love how the short rib is over orzo. We also shared to ekmek for dessert. A must have! The vibe is more inviting than some of the other Mediterranean restaurants which also have great food but come as a bit stuffy. I would definitely recommend Nerai for a group especially with the upstairs rooms."

  • "The food was, for the most part, excellent. The octopus appetizer was superb and the dorado entree was very good. My only complaint about the fish is that the minimum serving was 1.5 pounds, which I found a bit much (and somewhat pricey, since the fish was priced on a per pound basis). My only other complaint is that, because we were seated near the bar area, the noise level intruded somewhat on the conversation at our table."

  • "It is difficult to find a great restaurant on East 54th st. After a morning of shopping on the mid and upper East side, I found this oasis of calm at Nerai. Although it has leanings towards Greek food I like to think of it as Mediterranean cuisine. The food was tasty, light and perfectly cooked. I had a Greek salad, followed by the best grilled calamari I have ever had. It was so tender. Then I had the best Greek yogurt I have ever had. I don't want to know how many calories it was, but it was delicious. Served with crushed nuts and honey. The décor was lovely and the food was heavenly."

  • "Dunno why I felt obligated to start this with a line from Rocky, but its one of those days. Second time at this place, felt I had to write a review. First time was a few months back and it was not nearly as busy as this time, which is probably a good sign, as midtown is very corporate and hit or miss sometimes. Bar was busy, both floors were full, and food was outstanding. Grilled octopus was the best I've ever had, perfect char, right amount of lemon dressing. Lobster Orzo was also out of this world. Sommelier did a great job of recommending a greek wine that was perfect. This may be my new greek spot."

  • "Our previous Nerai visit was the Valentine's Day prix fixe, this time it was their regular menu. Two very different things, so I hope a repeat review is all right. Our first impression of Nerai was superb. This visit was even better! And "impression" is the right word because not only was the food some of the best we ever had, but when we arrived we were welcomed *back* and they remembered my husband's severe food allergy. Aside from doublechecking the dishes he ordered to make sure they did not contain the allergen, the courteous, thoughtful folks at Nerai made sure he knew that certain dishes--like their fabulous baklava--were okay. (More than okay: heavenly!) He's named Nerai his favorite NYC restaurant. I agree!"

  • "Went for a business lunch picked by our client. We were late....not an issue. We had to rush them because of appointments....not an issue. Food was outstanding. They wanted to allow us to stay and enjoy as long as we would like but were wonderful at accommodating our need to get out."

  • "Stylish restaurant in a convenient mid town location. Lively bar area. Food came quickly and our glasses were kept full. However, my $27 Octopus appetizer, which was supposedly a signature dish, was just so so. Greek salad was fine, but nothing special. The main course lamb was not as good as we make at home. I really had high hopes for Nerai but with so many great restaurants to choose from in NYC, I don't expect to return."

Service was attentive and helpful. Forgotten salad was comped from bill, but given to us to take home anyway. Bartender was passionate about making us a perfect martini..much appreciated. Upstairs room perfect for private functions, which I will look forward to booking in the future."

  • "Ultimately not worth the $$$$. All of the wines offered--all of them-- are close to $20/glass. It's fine to serve expensive dishes, but the portions should not be stingy. An arugula /pear/yogurt/walnut salad had fewer than 20 pieces of arugula. Too bad, because the restaurant's ambience-- both upstairs and downstairs-- is stunning, and the food is yummy. But everything is so outrageously overpriced (even by Manhattan standards) that we likely won't be back."

  • "Restaurant is very beautifully decorated but the food was just ok, the branzino is best fish on the menu and the Greek salad was good. The other fish we had was a little meaty and the appetizer to start was a trout appetizer, not great. I wouldn't rush to go back here for dinner but would try for lunch because service and staff are very nice and accommodating."

More important, my husband has a severe food allergy and they took the best care of him. He was able to enjoy everything, without compromise.   • "Everything tasted so fresh at Nerai, from the appetizer to the entree. Tried the sampler spreads (we ordered the roasted red pepper, the hummus, and tzatsiki) and warm pita bread. Delicious! We each had the snapper and herb potatoes which were both excellent. Service was good, lighting and ambiance were both relaxing. My only complaint was that the tables and chairs were too small and we had to cram all of the food we ordered onto that little table, and there was a lot of food between the appetizer and entrees and drinks and bread baskets. Also, the tables were a bit too close to one another. Overall, a positive dining experience, food was fantastic and we will definitely return in the future."

  • "The zucchini and eggplant chips are outstanding. Short rib was very tasty. Waiter forgot to take down order for Brussels sprouts which sounded good. The wine glasses are a poor choice if they insist on purported six ounce pours. Seemed like it was short by a couple of sips. And the bus people need to back off. It felt like I needed a belt in a martial art just to save my plates (with delicious spreads left on them to dip delicious bread in) and glasses (with wine still left in it) from their endless attacks."

  • "Dined there with my husband. From making the reservation, to the last bite of dessert-it was exceptional. Told the hostess it was my first time there, we asked for a romantic table-we got a cozy banquet. The duck moussaka took a while, but it was velvety and worth the wait. The carpaccio looked like a piece of art, but the octopus was amazing. The homemade bread and the different spreads was a nice intro-recommended by the waiter. We shared live langoustines-sweet. We barely had room for dessert, but thankfully, we were encouraged to try a mousse-filo-nut thing. Wonderful. We got a tour of the 2nd floor, really nice. We are already planning our next date night there."

The food is very good. My lavraki was cooked to perfection. I went with a small group of girlfriends and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Although, it is a bit on the expensive side."
