A word from Natsumi Restaurant
Natsumi Breaks New Ground with Innovative Modern Japanese Cuisine. Barbara Matsumura founder of Haru Restaurants, has teamed up again with Chef Haru Konagaya to create this strikingly original destination. Two separate experiences in two adjacent sites, an elegant restaurant and a trendy Tokyo-chic bar/lounge. Natsumi specializes in modern Japanese cuisine with a touch of Italian ingredients; offering an array of creative dishes such as, sashimi arugula salad, new style yellowtail carpaccio, and lobster green tea ravioli. The innovative menu relies on unique preparations with dynamic flavors. The wine list is international, with white, red, sparkling wines, and champagne by the glass and bottle. The restaurant is divided into distinct dining areas, a cozy space with intimate booths, a sushi bar where diners can watch the chefs compose, and in the front, the windows open to the street. The whole room is infused with a warm golden glow and earth tones.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "going to the theater, delicious, well priced Japanese food, in a nice atmosphere very nice food!"

  • "The sushi was very fresh. We've been here before, and the sushi is consistently good. The service was a bit slow, and we had to remind our waiter that we ordered our appetizer, two times. It's a very small restaurant, and the noise level is high. But, you can always expect the sushi to be fresh!"

  • "Only went Natsumi for lunch but do have plan to visit again for the dinner in near future. Don't know much about their lunch special, we ordered from their regular menus. Rock Shrimp and Natsumi Tempura Roll are good. (if you want to pick one, try the Natsumi Tempura Roll). Chirashi are high quality and super fresh; however, for the price point, I think there may be other type of fish that chef could use. All and all, I think this is great place to go for either lunch or dinner. if you are big guy, please expect tie seat and small space."

  • "Food was delicious and service was great. My only complaint would be the proximity of the tables. The booths in the back look more comfortable but the seat we sat at was a fourtop with a wall booth and two chairs. The other table was so close it was hard not to over hear conversations and when we left I had to squeeze awkwardly by the other table. That's the only reason I wouldn't put 5 stars."

  • "This was our third time at Natsumi's and it has become one of our favorite restaurants in the Theater District. We did not have sushi but the kitchen entrees are delicious. We have tried the grilled chicken teriyaki, broiled chilean sea bass, steak teriyaki, grilled slamon teriyaki, and filet mignon. All were delicious and prepared exactly as requested. Service is excellent and you are never rushed. Would recommend this restaurant to everyone. A real find in the Theater District."

  • "It sounded like a bright spot in the food desert of the Times Square area, and the place looked good inside. But the food, especially the sushi, was sub-standard. And it was all slathered with soy and other sauces to cover up the fish quality. A burger joint - or even a street hot dog - would be a better bet. And the price would be more in line with what you got."

  • "Great food and very good service! Even thou we got there very late"

  • "Very tasty, fresh sushi the heart of theater district that seems to attract NYers and out-of-towners alike. Hot appetizers are wonderful, especially the oysters. Sushi is inventive and delicious. Dessert, borrowing from the Italian, is amazing. Had cheesecake tempura. Crunchy and melts in your mouth. Wonderful sake sangria cocktail. Service was fantastic. Asked if we were going to the theater which we were. They were efficient but not hasty."

  • "Unfriendly service, dimly lit, dirty table, wrong food served to my boss at a business lunch. When waiter realized the mistake, he took the plate away and it took 20 minutes for the correct order to be served, after the waiter argued with the sushi chef (they were within earshot) about what the order actually was. I would not recommend and would not go back. "

  • "Natsumi is a terrific restaurant. I have dined here, and at many other sushi restaurants throughout NYC, and Natsumi is consistently excellent. The food is fresh, tasty and consistent. The service is attentive but not overbearing. The ambiance is elegant. The manager, Tony, is also a treasure - he treats each customer like family and takes care to remember regulars while also keeping the restaurant running smoothly - he is a big reason I consistently go back and recommend the restaurant to others. 5 stars."

  • "Finding a good place for pre-theater dinner, is a challenge. But not if you've found Natsumi! Its Japanese modern decor is tucked away on 50th Street, and the dining room is separated from the bar area, making each space feel intimate and inviting and making the closely spaced tables completely acceptable. The sushi platters opulent, and the fish is as fresh as I've ever tasted. The pieces are 1.5 times the size of those at other sushi restaurants and the rice is "sticky" enough to allow two bites without crumbling. I'm sure the menu's non-suchi dishes are comparable, but I'd find it difficult to eat anything but sushi here. Will return even if I'm not going to theater!"

  • "We had lunch here, pre theatre. Husband had the sushi lunch and I had the tempura lunch. Very delicious and high quality sushi and tempura. A good find. "

  • "Natsumi never disappoints. From the moment you walk in the door, the friendly accomodating staff makes you feel welcome. The grilled chicken and shrimp was flavorful and beautifully presented as were the steamed king crab dumplings. We highly recommend Natsumi and will definitely return."

  • "Natsumi is a great find, right in the theater district. The dishes were creative and tasty and incredibly fresh. We can not say enough good things about the food. The restaurant is a small "L" shape. the front by the bar could be noisy, the side/back is quiet and intimate. service was friendly and efficient."

  • "Our third time dining at Natsumi and we will be back! Food is excellent and the quality of the fish top notch. The staff is attentive and the atmosphere pleasant, but not pretentious."

  • "It was VERY hot in the restaurant and they mentioned they couldn't adjust the air. The door was opened but it was hot/humid outside with cigarette smoke from sidewalk smokers standing outside coming in. The food was OK - typical take out but the sushi was warm (scary), as it was HOT in there (only about 73 outside and raining). Nothing impressive about the service, food, menu, ambiance...it's mediocre (at BEST). I won't return."

  • "The food was good at a decent price especially for a Times Square restaurant. The decor is modern. The service was fine, nothing special."
    Dined on 5/9/2014
  • "The sushi and other food items were fine, but the seating is somewhat cramped. The result was the intrusion of our neighbor's conversation into ours. Overall, not as pleasant an experience as we would have preferred. "

  • "This is a nice restaurant with an interesting Asian fusion twist. Natsumi is a great Italian Asian Fusion place with delicious sushi and delicious Italian and Japanese inspired entrees."
    Dined on 5/2/2014
  • "Lousy service, snarky staff, and very average food quality. Tourists and a B&T mid-town work lunch crowd fill up the seats. Don't be fooled and look elsewhere for much better sushi. "
    Dined on 5/2/2014
  • "The vegetable tempura was a bit oily (which means the fry-oil wasn't hot enough)... The sushi was good and fresh, but it wasn't earth-shattering. Frankly, just 8 short blocks up is a sushi place with much more imaginative rolls and a more sophisticated atmosphere."
    Dined on 4/26/2014
  • "Appetizers and rolls are exceptional; the hot entrees are very good - tasty, well presented and with true "dinner size" portions. The restaurant offers a variety of Sake choices - the "flight" of four different kinds is very fairly priced."

  • "Very good sushi, rolls, and entrees. Some of the best fish I have had in awhile. Entrees are fusion fare and very good. We took our 3 kids ages 16, 12, and 7 before a show and they had plenty to choose from. Highly recommended."

  • "Place I go to when I'm in the mood for just a quiet night out, keyword being QUIET! Very nice ambience with good food and above all, quiet, so that you can actually have a conversation using a normal speaking voice."

  • "I have eaten at Nansumi on a number of occasions and it is always been a please. An interesting Japanese menu delivered by friendly, attentive & professional staff make for a memorable evening. A particular pleasure is sitting at the Sushi bar an watching the Sushi Chefs work and see your meal prepared"

  • "Server broke a martini glass on the table. Glass everywhere. Another server while clearing, dumped soy sauce on my lap and on the table. Don't order the ceviche. No king crab as advertised in it. After the mishaps with the servers, not even a drink was offered in reparation. "

  • "We took a Sushi-Plate for 58$ which was really big and enough for two people. The Sushi was very delicious and also the Plum Wine we had. It was a little bit strange that our waitress changed during our dinner and didn't say goodbye before. Nevertheless the service was very good and we felt very welcome. Overall we can totally recommend to visit this restaurant."

  • "The best thing about Natsumi is the location. Pulsing, loud music makes you think it's a hot spot (maybe the bar is) but the restaurant had its share of tourists coming I after a day of shopping. Seaweed salad is good; sushi seemed a day old."
    Dined on 4/17/2014
  • "I was excited to go to Natsumi both recommended and convenient. Alas, the food did not live up to the very warm welcome and pleasant environment. It's possible there were slammed by pre theatre business. The lunch box came with luke warm miso soup and cold dumplings. I am certainly they were intended to be consumed at least warm. The hugely recommended spicy shrimp was not to my taste although it managed to get to the table at a suitable temperature. The tuna roll was fine. A friends tempura was just average. The service was excellent despite every seat being taken. Looking around I saw many happy eaters esp. those with a variety of rolls in front of them. I'm going to chalk this one up to poor ordering."

  • "Cute ,small, nice for date night. Attentive staff. Food was nicely presented and served at proper temperature. I had the tempera dish. It was just ok, while the shrimp were delicious, the scallops and fish had a peculiar bleached taste. My sister had another dish with shrimp and fish. She enjoyed the shrimp , but she did not like the fish. The lobster dumplings were good but not any better than a take out place. Great location directly across the street from the Gershwin Theatre."
