Diner Reviews
  • "Definitively one of the best in Houston. Food is original and tastes incredible."

  • "What a great evening with friends. The service was wonderful and the drinks were great. The manager even got us on the guest list at a local club after our dinner. The food ? Well, I can't say enough about the food, we all chose the tasting menu and it was divine. The waiters were all knowledgeable about the selections and were fabulous. The atmosphere being outside on the waterway made the evening that much better - If I could post pics to show you how wonderful it was I would. Can't wait to return"

  • "Smoke from grill was terrible. MEnu was limited and food was extremely mediocre at best."

  • "We went to Nara with high expectations given recent recommendations in Houston magazines. We tried some Korean Bulgogi and Bebimbap as well as some of the recommended sushi starters and rolls. All of these had high quality ingredients including the fresh tuna and white fish. Some of the specialty sushi dishes tended a bit on the sweet side for my taste, but this is a matter of your preferences. The service was prompt and attentive, and the ambiance very relaxing. Recommended if you don't mind the prices."

  • "nothing special, except some of the dishes and the soup was too salty."

  • "Nara now offers Sunday dinner from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. With items ranging from Kobe beef sliders, the salmon truffle roll, and grilled flap buns, they have an impressive menu to boast. The ambience is great for a romantic evening out!"

  • "We come here often, Kyle the manager is very attentive as is the wait staff, sommelier and the chef. Try the Nara ribeye rolls, bulgolgi, and Korea style chicken wings. Each course will change your life! West ave gables residents get a discount too."

  • "Enjoyed the 'upscaleness' for the special evening. Interesting twist on various traditional Korean dishes. As these sort of places go, sometimes too much fuss in changing up a traditional dish is hit or miss. It applies here. Some funked up dishes worked and some did not. Wait staff were all very nice and attentive."

  • "The atmosphere at Nara is very modern, urban and sexy. Great sushi bar, comfortable chairs, large tables, outdoor patio and a great kitchen. The food is an innovative cross between japanese and Korean. Kimchi is used as a garnish or added spice. The owner chef was walling around and he came to our table and recommended some dishes. The Bulgogi (Beef and Pork) is fantastic!, The whole menu is full of great finger food, sushi, or other dishes that are perfect for sharing. We had five people, cocktails, (cucumber martini great!) and sat around talking and ordering food as we felt like it. Great fun. The Korean Fajita Rice Cake was fabulous. But the most fun was the Korean hot rock grill. Cooked delicious beef and chicken. Plates steak-fish."

  • "Why the negative reviews? I walked in with some reservation after reading the negative reviews. However, I left pleasantly surprised. The service was exceptional. Every staff member, from water server to manager were very attentive. Made sure to pull the seat in and out for my wife. The bartender helped me choose the wine and then later came to my table to see how I liked it. Service was 5 stars. The food was great! A very nice diversity in the menu and received helpful advice from the waitstaff. Nara will now be on my list of top date night ideas!"

  • "All of the food from the appetizers to the pork buns and the sushi were all wonderful. The manager as well as Lindsay both came over to our table to ask how things were and we felt very well taken care of. Will for sure be coming back!! The decor of the restaurant is also beautiful and the cocktail and wine list was nice as well. If you like Uptown Sushi, they have a lot of the same rolls at NARA that are just as good as Uptown."

  • "We enjoyed a great meal here at Nara. Chef Don took care of us and his food was unbelievable. One of the most interesting new restaurants to come to Houston. My wife and i truly enjoyed our experience."

  • "So many unique and delicious plates!! Service was very attentive but sometimes felt like they were trying too hard. (But better that than some of the alternatives.) Overall great atmosphere, design, and music (although it was a tad warm in the dining area). Absolutely worth going for the food!"

  • "At Nara if you are like most diners you will select something to start with. When the small plates arrive and the Bulgogi Bao or Open faced soup dumplings blow your mind there is no need to fell obligated to order an entree. I suggest another round of starters and then finish the night with a signature sushi roll. Not that the entree options are not good but in my opinion these small plate and bao options are just far superior. Service here brings me back to when servers really earned their money. They are educated in the preparation and ingredients in every dish, they make suggestions based on experience, and you will never want for anything. Overall a great concept and a place that will probably be in our weekly rotation for some time. "

  • "My wife and I went to Nara at 6:30 on a Friday. The new ambience is beautiful and chic. Not quite as trendy as Katsuya . They have a little AstroTurf seating area outside that looks fun. It wasn't very busy so I have my worries but our experience was great! We really enjoyed the Korean inspired dishes and the service was spot on. Don't miss the bulgogi!"

  • "Fantastic! I had not had Korean food before and Kat, our server, went over everything with us - the food was great!!!! Service impeccable! "

  • "The server gave off this unsettling vibe. He was too friendly to the point that I could not enjoy my date with my significant other. She was very annoyed by our server, and I felt that I was talking to him more than my date. Server talked too much about himself, the specials and dishes that I am aware of, and kept recommending dishes that were irrelevant to what I ordered to begin with. Just way too much unnecessary service, kindness, recommendations, & conversation. Yes I understand there are spotlight dishes that servers should recommend, but he kept bringing them up over and over regardless of how I declined. I was really looking forward to having a nice birthday dinner, but the overly unnecessary customer service ruined it for me. "

  • "Food was wonderful. Timing of food was not coordinated. Our waiter was very friendly but not efficient."

  • "I had heard good things about the chef and the Japanese/Korean influenced food sounded interesting. The food was good, but not inspired. Pluses: décor is wonderful, cucumber saki-tini was delightful, miso soup was delicious, self park option in the garage. Negatives: food was ordinary and, for the price point, I expect something more impressive, especially with so many options close by that excel in Japanese and Asian-inspired food. We entertain a lot of business clients and out of town guests who rely on us for choosing gems. We disappointed our guests and Nara disappointed us."

  • "Wonderful food, nice service, a bit loud, expresso was cold and six dollars (but removed when pointed out), food is a welcome blend of Korean and Japanese entrees."

  • "We dined at Nara for the first time and had difficulty choosing, since everything on the menu sounded appealing. The staff provided some great recommendations and we enjoyed it all. Can't wait to go back."

  • "A unique restaurant with very high standards and excellent food. The combination of Korean and Japanese is winning."

  • "overpriced. Place looks great and the ambiance is awesome, but the service is the worst I've had at a restauranrt at that price point. I spent $115, left there still starving, and had to wait 15 minutes plus after ordering a drink."

  • "No complaints on the food. Good creative fusion menu. Service was awful. Manager needs to learn composure. "

  • "Found this restaurant because they participated in a charity event that I attended. The sample spicy pork buns they gave out were so good that I had to have more. We tried many menu items and also sampled some of the cocktails. We cleaned our plates - everything was great and very fresh. The only thing I'd skip is the roasted eggplant and cucumber salad- it fell flat. But everything else - the miso soup, various nigiri, butter crab roll, spicy pork buns, and more were truly great. The ambiance and decor is sleek and modern. Service was very attentive. Have already recommended Nara to friends. Can't wait to go back and try more menu items."

  • "A unique experience with interesting and flavorful dishes. Lots of small plates so you can try many things on the menu. The martinis are great also. We will definitely go back."

  • "It's unusual to find an exciting and different twist on food, but Nara has found that niche. Modern Korean food served exquisitely - the flap buns, pancakes and sushi rolls all offer a different experience with some amazing flavors. The wine list is pretty good as well. This is a restaurant that truly deserves a five star rating."

  • "If you like Korean food, this is the place to go. Also, Japanese is good too.. My favorite was the escolar with topping. The staff was knowledgeable and made good recommendations. My only issue with this place, is that they have too many menu items, which makes it hard to choose. I will be back to try some of the pizzas and rice bowls. They also have an interesting selection of wine. I tried one of the Korean 'sakes' -- it is strong."

  • "After reading some other reviews wasn't sure what to expect, but the entire experience went far beyond my expectations. Our waiter gave us great recommendations and everything we ate was perfectly executed. Nothing was overcooked, and you could tell every single ingredient was fresh. The flap buns are excellent, and the entire staff was ranting and raving about the black bean noodle dish so we ordered it. It was the best part of our meal and definitely a life changer. We left STUFFED."

  • "Their seafood in general is super fresh. You don't smell or taste any fishy flavor in their raw fish. I also tried the raw beef sushi and it was definitely a top notch grade A beef. I will definitely go back to get some sushi. The Korean menu was just OK. As Korean, I won't order anything else but hot rock beef. All other stuff is something you can cook really easily at home."

  • "I set up a lunch for one of my foodie groups at Nara. Colton, our server, was fantastic, attentive but not overly so, made good recommendations and kept the food coming. We ordered many tapas size items from the menu and loved them all. I think our favorites were the seafood pancake and the Shoi Roll. The 1/2 price lunch special worked beautifully for us. I think the full price lunch menu may be a bit high for trying lots of items. Their lunch entrees look to be reasonably priced but we did not try those. Beautiful restaurant, lovely food, great service."

  • "We started with the Japanese Hamachi with Jalapeno Ponzu - I never thought of parmesan cheese with sashimi. We enjoyed the unique favoring. The Nara Salad was large and a meal by itself. Specialty rolls were....Excellent! I recommend the Salmon Truffle Roll, the Wasabi Mousse Roll and the Crunchy Yellowtail roll (had them twice). The Shoi roll was good, but we were full. Hot Stone Bowl Bibimba was delicious but overpriced for the size, especially upgrading to the Prime Rib. If you like spicey, try the Korean Shin Ramen. It was very spicey. The Braised Pork Bao was good. The bread was light and just right on the sweetness. The pork was a little fatty - but I guess pork belly is suppose to be. Overall the food was delicious and well prepared."

  • "The menu has a number of compelling items, but our waiter knew little to nothing about them. Our main dishes were disappointing. Mine lacked flavor. My husband ordered the hot rock pork belly, which splattered him with grease. Our sushi items were superb, however, especially the salmon roll with truffle oil. The dessert menu is practically nonexistent."

  • "The restaurant experience in whole was great! The menu was a Korean / Japanese fusion and had quite a few choices in both. I really enjoyed the fact that they had fresh fish that were flown in and that they were able to tell you when it arrived. We tried some sushi rolls, fresh fish, and some Korean buns. Every item we ate had a really unique and flavorful taste! We got the chance to meet Chef Donald and he is great to talk to!"
