Diner Reviews
  • "My husband goes to the same three restaurants, he never wants to chance a bad experience. After 25 years of this, I very seldom plan anything, something is always wrong with my choice. I boldly planned Nara because we had an event downtown, he loved it, has recommended it to others and dare I say, we now have 4 restaurants we can go to! Easy to find, parking right next to building. Creative, filling entrees. Sorry, we didn't try the sushi, but the people at the next table had amazing looking dishes served to them."

  • "My wife and I went to Nara for dinner before a symphony concert. We were in an early crowd--5:00 p.m.--and were among the younger people at that time [we're 60], but we had a great time! We sat at the sushi bar and watched the craftsmen making the sushi. We also struck up a conversation with a young couple seated next to us. That was fun! The sushi offerings were quite good. We tried several "favorites" that we enjoy at other sushi locations, plus a few that we were unfamiliar with. We did ask our server for a sashimi suggestion, and it was not very interesting, but certainly not bad! We definitely would go back there. oh--it turned out that when we were there, it was happy hour, so we were able to eat and drink very economically."

  • "I took a group of 6 Japanese foreign exchange students to Nara for lunch. We made a reservation, and our table was set with water even earlier than when we arrived. The food was superb. The atmosphere was wonderous (check out those bathrooms)! The staff was helpful and friendly. Finally, I was impressed by the price. My partner and I got two bento boxes and split a specialty roll for $33. I will definitely return!"

  • "Had a great time at ladies night! Food and specials were fantastic, but our services was somewhat poor. She challenged us telling us we did not order an appetizer, I'm pretty sure we would remember that....Other than that, definitely make a reservation for ladies night. Would go back and hope for a different server."

  • "Good sushi spot for those looking for sushi in downtown. Great happy hour specials and fun "naked sushi." Good for a date or a large group. Not the best I've ever had, but I've been many times and plan to go back. :)"

  • "Monday Night half price wine night enabled us to try a new fine wine at a great price. Lettuce wraps were dellicious and we ordered sushimi as we went along.. Earning points as a Kansas City Original was an added benefit. Quiet enjoyable conversation spot."

  • "Went here for our anniversary, and from the beginning the visit was pleasant. We were seated within a couple of minutes after arriving. The hostess was very nice. Then we got down to the nitty gritty, the food! We had the pretzel appetizer and crispy spring rolls. The pretzels were soft and the sauce they came with was awesome the kids really enjoyed it. The spring rolls were cooked to perfection. For entree the kids had chicken tempura which was probably the best tempura I've had in years. We had sashimi and several different sushi rolls all excellent. If you are looking for quality food great ambiance and prices. Then look no further."

  • "Nara's is a great restaurant. It offers an extensive sushi menu plus a full standard menu for the non-sushi audience. It has a nice bar and happy hour. The atmosphere is great with the exposed brick of the an early 20th century building and the added Japanese interior highlights. Service was very helpful with the complicated menu. Nara's is great for happy hour, for dinner, or for a pre-theater meal."

  • "The Ladies Night specials at Nara are fantastic. Very tasty and inexpensive. The music can be a bit too loud though. It makes it hard to talk without becoming hoarse."

  • "Sit at the Sushi bar and order Omakase, which means "I'll leave it to you" or more literally "to entrust" and to leave the selection to the chef. Diners who order omakase allow the chef to be creative and they will prepare items not typically found on the standard menu. This is not limited to sushi, and may include items prepared with other methods. You can set a budget and let the chef know what you don't like. The chef will present a series of plates, beginning with the lightest fare and proceeding to richer dishes. I like to just let the chef go at it and then tell him when to stop. Generally you get the best the chef has to offer, and often at a price below what you would pay for à la carte."

  • "The food here has been good every time I've been. My main complaint was the noise level. I had a hard time conversing with my friend. Also, our table put my friend out in the aisle enough (even with me moving the table closer to the booth) that she would get hit by passerby. Otherwise, good food, decent service. I will go back."

  • "Casual and energetic atmosphere; great service. The sushi rolls were excellent; a noodle dish was quite delicious; a beef dish was only fair as it was salty and chewy. Nice wine list. Will definitely return to try other sushi rolls and dishes."

  • "I love sushi. I've been to 5 other places in Kansas City but Nara has topped all of them easily. I had great service and even better food. I will definitely be going back to Nara for all of my sushi cravings."

  • "Nara is fabulous! I love to eat at this place and my husband has even grown to like sushi because of Nara. I eat here as often as I am able. I highly recommend it. They have a specialty roll called the Medusa, that is phenomenal."

  • "I had their Winter Wonderland roll and it was fantastic, the crunchy noodles went well and added some fun texture, which surprised me. However, I ordered a roll of my own concoction, and in theory it would have been delicious, but for some reason it was wrapped in what tested like American cheese... Why? I have no idea but it ruined the whole roll and I definitely didn't ask for it. I suggest just keeping to the menu items or make sure the awkward cheese is what you wanted. Staff was extremely friendly and efficient, it wasn't obnoxiously packed and they even had body sushi which was definitely worth the experience."

  • "Our reservations were set days ahead using Open Table. The Restaurant called on New Years to confirm. Our group of 6 enjoyed cocktails and a nice view out the window of the City while waiting for our custom order of Sushi. The Sushi Chef is amazing and has made many creative displays in the past and this one was delivered on a wooden Boat with plenty of fresh delicious Sushi for all of us. We have never been disappointed at Nara's and 1in the party has had sushi all over the world and this is tops in KC by him. The Sushi Pops are wonderful…..and ostrich eggs were amazing. So close to the Performing Arts Center too."

My friends and I are quite happy to have re-discovered Nara! We look forward t going back and have definitely added it to our list of places to stop by for an after-work cocktail! If you haven't been to Nara recently - you need to head on over!"

You can set a price limit, let Chef know any items you do not care for, or just let him have at it and tell him to stop when you are full. This is absolutely the best way to enjoy Sushi and get to try items that are not on the typical Sushi platter. Koji rocks!"

  • "We have not been to Nara in awhile. We have always enjoyed it in the past. The service was very friendly. It was hard to find a sushi roll that did not have cream cheese on it. What we did pick (it is their stand by) was good. I decided to try the teriyaki salmon. It was covered in the sauce and it was overcooked. They quickly remedied the situation and brought out a nice piece of fish sans the sauce. Much better."

  • "My wife(Japanese) and I chose this place for sushi based on the fact it had Japanese Sushi Chefs, but sadly, even with Japanese chefs the sushi&sashimi was of poor quality. The fish was not good, the sushi rice was not properly seasoned and a tad too sweet. Likewise the knife cuts left the sashimi torn and ragged and was not presented well. The rolls his some of these issues but I am afraid anyone unaccustomed to quality Japanese food would easily be fooled by this place. Stepping away from the raw fish, we decided to try some takoyaki which is wonderful if freshly prepared. Well, this was nothing more than the typical frozen kind you can buy at the local Asian grocery. It was sticky wet and cold. Not the proper seasoning on it."

  • "Our first time at Nara on a First Friday and it was quite the experience. Between the 3 of us (starving people) we had 7 rolls of sushi & a trip to the body sushi display (complementary to diners) and tried 3 very distinct drinks. All of it was delicious! The body sushi was scary at first, but the whole process was easy to do and simple to navigate. Our server was very nice and we had a wonderful time dining out. We were thinking about the reverse happy hour specials, but they didn't seem that great of deals when compared to the full menu & offerings. Delicious spider rolls, spicy tuna, jalepeno popper roll, and tempura shrimp roll. This is THE sushi spot in KC - no questions."
