Diner Reviews
  • "Felt like I was dining in New England! Since I lived there and married a native of Gloucester, I don't say that very often south of Connecticut. The food, especially the full belly clams, was great. The bartenders knew their stuff, but the rest of the service was sorely lacking. Our server never stayed around long enough to get the answers to the perfunctory questions he asked. We had to literally call him back to the table to place drink orders (hard to believe the management wouldn't like to get more rounds of drinks ordered). The kitchen is a bit stingy on the lemon wedges-one for an order of 6 oysters Rockefeller?-and dishes lack beauty, but the seafood was delicious. Needs a bit of polish but the food is worth the rough edges. "

  • "It's wonderful to have a great option in the area for great seafood! This setting is charming and casual and should do very well I. This location."

  • "The food never disappoints here. The service is attentive, food delicious, & very timely. Be sure to ask for the corn bread mini muffins to snack on while you wait for your food. Recommend: french toast, calamari, crab bennie, crabcakes, & cod. Be sure to make a reservation. They are very accommodating if you have to make some changes (ie add a person or you're running late). The last time I went for dinner & we had paid our meal, waiting on a couple folks at our table to use the restroom & then head out, so we chatted at the table. The supervisor (?) came by & said "not to rush you but there's a group waiting & they have reservations". I understand, but improper approach. However, I would come back unless this becomes the norm."

  • "Every staff member smiled, said hello and welcomed us. Service was great. Food was good. Had a very enjoyable evening."

  • "My party consisted of a toddler, an 85 year old, my husband and me. We each found something that we enjoyed eating. The restaurant is pretty noisy and the wait staff seemed a bit stretched but they were able to accommodate our requests. Our experience would have been 5 stars if it were quieter and if our simple requests could have been dealt with faster. For instance, providing rolls for the table soon after being seated would be a great. We did receive them but not before our toddler's meal arrived."

  • "The food was good. We had oysters(Very tasty) and fish tacos as they were both on happy hour special and both we tasty. As entrees we had the salmon and crab salad. The salmon wasn't very flavorful but we did enjoy the crab salad (very tasty) as there was a decent amount of crab and quite like a flavorful. A little nit picky but but the hostesses don't ask if we wanted to sit outside and started walking toward an indoor table (I mean it was 70 and gorgeous so we pushed for it and they obliged). Our waitress didn't put the dressing on the side of the crab salad as we asked and she didn't fill up our water until she was asking if we were ready for the check. Overall, it was pretty good and we'll try one more time."

  • "Everything tasted frozen and was over fried :(. The lobsta and spinach did had no lobster in it, and calamari was over fried, meanwhile everything like the fish tacos was under-seasoned"

  • "This was our first time dining at Nantucket’s Reef and everything was excellent. We made a reservation and our table was ready when we got there (every though there was a wait for walk-ins). Our server was so attentive and the food was delicious. Their lobsta’ roll was phenomenal as was the steak my husband ordered. The décor inside is done very well and fits the theme of the restaurant. I highly recommend Nantucket’s’ Reef!"

  • "This was our first visit. The food was tasty and plentiful. It would rates five stars except for the bread - there wasn't any. The corn muffins they served instead are a poor substitute for good fresh baked bread. Fresh French or Italian rolls or bread would have been superior. The wine list is brief but our choice, a Californian pinot noir, tasted fine, a good table wine. There was no Washington State nor Oregon red wine on the menu - these are often a better and less expensive choices than California wines. The dessert menu looked enticing - but the high quality and generous portions of appetizer and entrees left us no room... Bottom line: we would gladly go there again, will probably bring hungry grandchildren along when we do."

  • "Read the other reviews and decided to give this place a try. We were looking for a casual dining experience for just the two of us. This place met our expectations. Although it was crowded, our table was ready when we arrived. The dining room was a good size with nice decor. We were able to carry on a conversation without having to scream. The menu had a nice selection of seafood ( although they were out of the stuffed cod my wife wanted to order). No matter- the mussels and the tuna appetizers we ordered were tasty, as was the mahi-mahi and the fish and chips we settled on. It wasn't out-of-this-world food, but it was good. We would go back and would recommend it to others if they wanted a good meal without high expectations."

  • "I was very disappointed with my most recent visit. The food was NOT hot and had to be sent back, no bread basket was offered, and we felt rushed by the staff.. If this had been the first visit, it would also have been the last. I am glad that this was not the typical experience."

  • "The food was excellent as well as the service. We did receive our main course before we had finished our salads. It would have been better if we had a little more time between the two courses. The only real negative was the noise level. It was not bad when we first arrived but it increased to an intolerably loud level when we were nearly finished."

  • "This is not our first trip to Nantucket's Reef, so we already knew what to expect. As always, the tuna appetizer remains a favorite, and the crab (no-)cakes are among the best you'll ever taste. We also had the grilled Mahi Mahi, which was nice and tender and hot, as well as the Lawney's Brownie - hot and chocolatey, with a nice serving of real vanilla bean ice cream. Our server Ryan was exceptional - very attentive and friendly, with great knowledge of the menu. It's GREAT having a reliably good seafood place in the neighborhood that is reasonably priced enough to visit every week!"

  • "3 of us were there for dinner. We found the food was very good, and at affordable prices. The one aspect that wasn't great was the beer and wine selections. We like draft domestic beer (Miller lite, Yuengling, Sam Adams Boston lager), but they only have craft beers on draft. So we ordered a bottle of wine, but were not thrilled with it. The staff accommodated my request to sit at a quiet table, so we had the best possible table for quiet, but it was still a little too noisy. The food, however, was very good. The mussels and calamari were excellent; the crab dip was not that great. The Mahi and stuffed Cod were very good. The staff did not rush us when we asked to slow down a bit. We will definitely come back."

  • "this restaurant positions the business as a seafood restaurant with a New England flavor....forget the fresh fish option at most real seafood restaurants...they had flounder over some sort of starch...period.....my wife finally ordered the talapia in an overly sweet some type of sauce and I got some tasteless fish tacos....the fish had zero flavor.... I suspect that the lobster and other rolls were fine...if you go here expecting to be in a very clean and nicely decorated neighbor hood restaurant and order only a sandwich..you will be fine....if you expect to spend an evening in a nice seafood restaurant, which we did, you will be most dissapointed"

  • "Decent neighborhood seafood restaurants are hard to find in the suburbs. Chains dominate the landscape, and are generally mediocre. Nantucket's Reef is a pleasant. laid-back neighborhood seafood place. I've had cod, lobster and crabcakes. All were fresh, high quality and well-prepared. Nothing that fancy, just simple, well-prepared seafood. Service is casual, but competent. I hope they're around for a long time."

  • "We fell in love with Nantucket's Reef from the first time we went there. Now we're close to being regulars as it's very near home, the prices are reasonable, and the food and service are wonderful. This time we went with friends. Mty husband and I shared the great fried calamari. I love the accompanying sauce; he's not a sauce person. We both loved our fried baskets, his shrimp, scallops, and potatoes, mine shrimp and corn on the cob."

  • "It's always great to have another place to fill one's need for crabcakes, lobster tails, or grilled fish. Nantucket Reef is a good addition to the MoCo dining scene. I'd describe it as a classic, casual seafood place, both in terms of menu and decor. I enjoyed the broiled crabcake; my husband liked his seared tuna; and my friend gave her lobster tail the thumbs up (although she said it's not as sweet as what you get in Maine). The grilled corn on the cob is a really yummy blend of sweet and salty; coleslaw was seasoned well. On the menu, too many of the fish preparations were fried; I prefer healthier preps. However, the wait staff was really friendly, so I'm sure they'd talk to the kitchen about grilling some fish, if you ask."

  • "The restaurant is in Traville Gateway in North Potomac. The food is very good with regular menu items (including New England whole belly fried clams) that are all solidly flavorful, well presented and well prepared. The service staff is young, friendly and knowledgeable. This location has buried other restaurants but this one deserves to thrive. Can't wait for nice weather when their patio will re-open."

  • "It is nice to have a "go to" seafood restaurant in the route 28 corridor of Traville. Our dinner was good albeit the waiter brought our dinner before we were finished with our salad. The food was tasty and fresh."

  • "The ambiance was not what I expected for a seafood restaurant- it was very casual and gave the appearance of a "beach shack". Most of the tables around us were even ordering sandwiches for dinner. The lobster roll was just OK and the shrimp roll contained very small, over cooked shrimp that lacked seasoning and flavor which was disappointing for the price of the rolls. However, we were pleasantly surprised by the intriguing appetizer selection. We had the calamari ourselves and absolutely enjoyed it! It was lightly battered and cooked to absolute perfection. It seems the appetizers are some of the more pleasing options on the menu and coupled with the attractive happy hour specials this would probably be the only reason I would return."

  • "This was our first experience at this restaurant and we found it interesting but not compelling for a return. My wife had cod and I had Mahi-mahi. Both were very good with ample portions. I also had the house salad which is rather unusual with all ingredients chopped into fairly small bits and corn kernels added. The biggest negative is the seating: continuous bench along the walls, fronted by tables for two or four and chairs. We prefer real booths. Also, the noise level was fairly high."

  • "The crab cakes were the best we have had in a long, long, time! Service was quick, extremely friendly, and a very comfortable atmosphere. Great choices of beer, not extensive, but choices that covered all tastes."

  • "Disappointed in the fish tacos and Mahi Mahi entree, not a lot of flavor. My husband enjoyed the ahi tuna salad. My 10 year old enjoyed his lobster tail which came with fries and corn. Good, attentive service. But the dishes need some spice!"

  • "My friend and I started with the mussels. Good flavor. We both got the surf and turf special that night which was a steak with a crab cake on top of it, both on top of mashed potatoes. It was a large portion. The crab cake was excellent and the steak was cooked to medium rare as I requested. This was my first time here. I will dine here again."

  • "Our small group had several dishes including the Calamari appetizer, the New England Stuffed Cod, the Wicked Shrimp Pasta, the Crab "no" Cake and the Key Lime Cheesecake. The Calamari, Stuffed Cod, and Crab no Cake were outstanding. The Cheesecake was very good but could have been a bit more tart although the raspberry drizzle helped with that. The pasta was very good but could have been a bit "wickeder" and the shrimp were terrific. The Service was outstanding. I would highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "We really enjoy the fresh food, charming atmosphere and great service at Nantucket's Reef. We've been there at least a dozen times now, and every experience has been consistently good. With all of the great menu choices of seafood, you'd think you were on Cape Cod!! A friend travels extensively, going often to Italy and the Mediterranean, and when we took her there , she said the calamari was the best she ever tasted!!"

  • "If you like really good seafood, this is your place! The seafood is grilled to perfection, crispy on the outside and moist and succulent on the inside. Start your meal with a cup of clam chowda' or oysters (both cooked or raw available). The side dishes are wonderful complements: rapini, redskin potatoes, corn on the cob. Complete your meal with a colorful house salad and enjoy the mini cornbread muffins with chives and maple butter. If you still have room, have the cheesecake. Great place for a couple or a large group. You will need reservations on Fridays and the weekends as the tables fill quickly."

  • "Found this restaurant by chance, and I have to say it is great find. You can pick anything on the menu and you won't be disappointed. Their cocktail menu is small and isn't unique but it won't disappoint you. The foods always great, the drinks are delicious and desserts are sweet"

  • "We have been to this restaurant several times and for awhile I was in a rut getting the same thing -- Wicked Mussels and Chowda! However, I feel that the Wicked Mussels are getting spicier every time I get them (chorizo) and, as much as I still LIKE them I can't eat them without something to cut the spice. So I got my Chowda and decided to try the Chicken Salad and WOW! Large and DELICIOUS! Brought half of it home and my husband ate the other half for lunch the next day. He loved it as much as I did. Bye bye Wicked Mussels and HELLO Chicken Salad!"

  • "Nantucket's Reef is an excellent place to eat. The waitstaff strike just the right balance between attentive and hands off. In other words, when your drink is low they refill it promptly. If you don't need anything, they leave you to eat with your dinner guests. They seem to understand that they are there to make your meal better, not control it like some other places do. The food itself is definitely the best you will get outside of New England, and may even rival some of the best places I have been to in New England. The fish is fresh and well prepared. The fried fish dishes are battered just right, the sides are great, and they have a nice beer selection."
