In 1842, after Nanking was captured by the British, Sir Henry Pottinger signed the Nanking treaty. What… followed thereafter was an era where various eating places opened up for visitors to enjoy the hospitality of this region. The food was modified to suit the palate of the visitors, in order to entice them to come back to these eating places. This "Fusion" cuisine became very popular. It is our humble endeavor at Nanking Restaurant to bring you the same historical "Fusion" taste and hospitality from ancient China. "It's hard to find a nice, fairly quiet restaurant in Midtown with good food that isn't overly toursity and Nanking fits the bill. We were pleasantly surprised and had a wonderful dinner. We'll definitely be back!"

"They did not seem to care that I had a reservation (they never checked the reservation list, if there was one) and stuck us in a corner near a shelf with wine that they needed during our dinner, so the servers had to reach over us to get it. The food was not good."

"underwhelming. thought it would be a pre-theatre find. But overly greasy/fried (don't get the stir fried cauliflower unless you want deep fried something) - very goopy papaya salad - bartender new - didn't know how to make drinks on the menu - I was served two different drinks and despite the many, many, many staff...very difficult to get anyone's attention - especially to get a check .."

"Very nice for a pre-show dinner. Efficient service, which is always a plus when there's a curtain at hand, and nice, well crafted Asian fusion. Watch for the built in tip, even on small parties. That could surprise you."

"The food is very good which continuously attracts my wife and I to go back. However, I noticed that now the restaurant charges an 18% automatic gratuity for a party of 2. If the service was excellent or even good I would not mind paying an 18% gratuity, but it is nothing special to warrant that high of a price point to just eat there."

"It's really difficult to find a decent restaurant in Times Square. This is one. The food may not be thrilling, but it's very well executed -- and the atmosphere is pleasant, the presentation of the whole snapper quite dramatic.

We hit a snag with the check, onto which an 18% tip had already been added -- fine print that a party of 2 would never anticipate. Fortunately our waiter pointed out our "error" after we added another 20 percent. The whole business made the transaction awkward: I'd suggest that they stick to the norm and only apply an automatic tip for parties of 6 or more."
