Diner Reviews
  • "We took part in the tasting menu. It was absolutely delicious! The wine pairings were very well done. Our waiter was extremely knowledgeable about wine selection and was able to provide excellent pairing for each course. We will be going back!"

  • "A happy accident took me to Nana's for a business meeting. The food was fresh, creative, and expertly prepared. Our server, Jonah was knowledgable, attentive, and not intrusive. I would definitely return when back in town."

  • "The menu is always a little different and unique. Recommendations from the server result in my liking something I would not have expected enjoying. Venison this time. Excellent."

  • "The food/atmosphere is good but honestly doesn't measure up to the price. I took my girlfriend there the night I proposed to her, so I don't frequent these places all that often. I dressed up, but I didn't look rich. I think the wait staff could tell, and so I think that's why they treated us a bit differently than tables even right next to us, where the people were more obviously loaded. I though that was to be expected, but still kind of classless. Here's the bottom-line. Nana's is more of a place where rich people go to feel rich and have their butts kissed. If you're into that sort of thing, then by all means. If you're looking for a special experience with great food, forget -- not worth the price."

  • "Nana's tops the list of my favorite restaurants. They keep on hitting the high spots in the dining scene."

  • "In a word, AMAZING! Daniel, our server, was attentive and knowledgeable about the menu and gave great recommendations. The food was perfectly executed and well presented. The striped bass was fresh and delicate and the accompanying sauce made the dish flawless. If it were up to me I would have gone back the next evening. I would also recommend the risotto and the pear tart."

  • "Heard great things...service was great...food was well prepared. Just did not wow us...perhaps because we got up at 4:30 for a flight.....I'll try it again!"

  • "Nana's never disappoints us - we always go for special occasions (this time it was for a belated Valentine's Day celebration). Wonderful staff, wonderful ambience, wonderful food. FIVE STARS all the way."

  • "We could not have been more impressed with the staff at Nana's. After getting lost in Durham some wonderful staffer spent probably 20 minutes on the phone with us trying to help us navigate the streets.....not easy. Upon arriving at Nana's we were meet in the parking lot and escorted into the restaurant. Since we were on a schedule...having tickets to a show at DPAC... the staff went into overdrive and our food was served within 15 minutes of our arrival. It was delicious.... We were even given a lesson on the GPS in one phone which we had been unable to access. It was so nice to see such wonderful service.... we will definitely return....Thanks for a special dinner."

  • "I have been here numerous times and enjoyed every meal. Saturday night's dinner went beyond fantastic into the sublime! The trigger fish was so delicious- I had to soak up every bit of sauce with bread. And the chocolate almond cake is the best dessert I've ever had- a perfect combo if chocolate and almond! The staff assisted with the selection of the perfect wine for our meal! I am looking forward to my next visit!"

  • "This restaurant is no secret in Durham. It tops every list and deservedly so. Beautiful food with a bit of an eclectic bent. My salad was perfectly dressed-dressing was tart with hint of cream. Snapper and schnitzel were both outstanding-schnitzel showing the restaurant's eclectic side. Tender pork with tasty breading, served with sauerkraut that included apple and grits that certainly included a good bit of butter and cheese. Sounds a bit weird and Southern, but it all tasted great. I don't drink (recent occurance), but did notice that the wine list was also eclectic. By the glass list was great-I knew the winerys, but many people will get introduced for the first time. I got a (free) splash of a Rotie Syrah blend-wow!"

  • "We were in town on a college visit, and selected Nana's for our special 'local dinner out' after reading some restaurant reviews, diner recommedations and perusing the menu online. From the house-baked herbed foccacia, grilled romaine salad, gravlax salad with lobster creme fraiche and appetizer of homeade gnocchi in a puttanesco sauce to the roasted venison and striped bass that we enjoyed as entrees, the food, service and ambience exceeded our expectations. This might well become an annual parents' weekend destination!"

  • "Our first experience at Nana's was spectacular! My husband and I both got the tasting menu and added on the wine pairings to go with it. Everything paired so nicely and both the dishes and wines tastings were nice sizes. We will definitely be back!"

  • "We were In Durham for one night only and thought we remembered a friend describing this restaurant years ago. For lack of any other suggestions we found out Nana's was close to our hotel and we could get a reservation. We could not have been more pleased with the decor, service, or our meal which included selections from all aspects of the menu. As promised the risotto was superb, and we were impressed with all the presentations. Our waiter was particularly helpful with wine selections. Having just driven through a winter storm we also appreciated the valet parking. The crowd was interesting and attractive and abundant!"

  • "Excellent service, delicious food, but a bit loud for the two of us. Was difficult to hear each other across the table, and the conversation at the table next to us kept drowning out ours. Bad luck on our part, I suppose."

  • "I was afraid that when I came here I would be disappointed because of the high expectations that I had from all of the rave reviews. However, Nana's fulfilled all of the rave! Food was great. The wheat focaccia bread was delicious, and the main dish was perfect! I brought two out of town guests with me, and they couldn't thank me enough for thinking of this place. I will definitely come here again. Its great that they have new menu items every month."

  • "The selections we chose from Nana's interesting menu, were all fresh, good quality, well prepared, and delicious. This was our first visit to Nana's, and it was quite apparent that they care about their food offerings, and have a loyal following of customers. Nana's decor is bright and open featuring very a interesting display of modern art work on the walls. Definitely worth a visit if you enjoy interesting and well prepared food."

  • "We were very excited to try such a highly acclaimed location, however were left very underwhelmed by the food. Though the grilled romaine salad and risotto were solid starters, neither were exceptional, inventive, or unique. Our main dishes were rather under-seasoned and I was very disappointed in the lack of flavor for my grouper. Unfortunately the pork schnitzel looked like something you would expect from a cafeteria meal, with the breaded slab covering the entire plate and a small dollop of cabbage slaw on the side. Again, nothing exciting about the main dishes. Server was very knowledgeable about the menu and the wine list. Generally, we were expecting more and feel like we could have had a much better meal for the price."

  • "My hubby and I went here for a belated Valentine's Day dinner. We were both very impressed. The service was impeccable, the food was outstanding and the atmosphere was perfect! This is not a restaurant for kids unless your kid has wonderful manners and a mature palatte. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to all my friends and family!"

  • "My wife and I had an excellent late Valentine's dinner. The service was friendly, prompt, and attentive without being overly distracting. The food was perfectly prepared and delicious, particularly the veggies. I definitely recommend their signature cocktails, we tried all four ;). The only quibble is that we went for an early dinner on a Thursday and it was quickly PACKED. Great for them, but a little noisy for a romantic evening out."

  • "I have been going to Nana's since they opened twenty years ago, and they never fail to deliver a delicious meal. The service is excellent and the prices are pretty reasonable, considering what you get. The fixed price menu has been $50 for as long as I can remember, that is a great deal!"

  • "We were a party of 6 celebrating 3 birthdays; we ranged in age from 58 to 88. There is no doubt that Nana's is a great restaurant when it comes to the meals themselves. The service is also fine. I had not been there for many years, so it was a real treat to be able to get reservations which were for a much later time that we would have preferred. Despite the fact that there are several smaller rooms, all of which were full even at a rather late hour, the noise level was quite high. Having a round table really helped. So if you are looking for a good choice of very well prepared food, I would certainly recommend this restaurant, for a night less overcrowded than a Saturday night., if there is such a thing."

  • "We chose this restaurant for the excellent reviews and we were not disappointed. We were taking out a couple for business and social reasons. The atmosphere is quiet and elegant. The drink, appetizer, entree and dessert choices were exceptional and the presentation was well done. My wife and I had the venison and it was delicious. Service was wonderful. We would dine there again."

  • "We truly enjoyed this place! We were visiting the area to visit a patient at Duke Hospital and were so surprised to find a wonderful place such as Nana's. The food was excellent, the service impeccable, and the ambience perfect. Need I say more? Loved it!"

  • ".....Visited my daughter at Duke this past weekend and had an amazing experience at Nana's! We order the "tasting menu" with "wine paring". For the next hour and a half we wined and dined to the fullest extent that our senses allowed. Each course was perfectly prepared and the waiter / sommelier was not only knowledgeable about what we were eating and drinking but also entertaining with his light banter. We left our dining experience with a "WOW"!"

  • "Two Fridays in a row and coming for more. Warm and cozy and very friendly and so delicious . Hendricks martini to start, good bread and butter ( not olive oil), and the best bouillabaisse ever, full of lots of fresh sea goods and fennel and soup to soak up. A perfect whit wine recommended. Kumquat pastry. Coffee. And not bad on the pocket. A real go-to place."

  • "We went there for a special occasion and it did not disappoint. Parking is not plentiful, but there is a valet option. Our server was very courteous and responsive. The food was excellent! I had venison loin and my wife had beef tenderloin. Both were cooked perfectly. We now consider Nana's one of our top choices."

Had a very enjoyable evening though they placed us between two other tables which were seated later despite our early reservation time. Food was very good and the service was outstanding. Perhaps a little pricey, but well worth a visit."
