Diner Reviews
  • "I love Nana's. We have always had wonderful meals there, and great times. The tables are a bit close together, and the noise level in the back room is always too high for me, but otherwise it continues to be our favorite area restaurant, and we have been many times. They surprise with dishes such as watermelon soup with crab and do the standards to perfection."

  • "Nana's service was highly appreciated with helpful recommendations and friendly, non-intrusive, conversation throughout the meal. The appetizers included the Heirloom tomato salad and Tuna Carpaccio and were a perfect start for the meal. The variety of tomatoes in the salad added interest and combined well with the fresh local mozzarella. The Tuna Carpaccio had wonderful ginger and sesame flavors that all melted in your mouth. It was difficult to choose from all the entrees since the descriptions on the daily menu were enticing, but we selected the Grilled Mahi Mahi and the Swordfish. Both were outstanding, but I give the edge to the Swordfish as my favorite. Our dessert was a delicious Apricot and Blackberry Crostata -- worth every bite."

  • "Food and service were equally stellar. Took our daughter here for celebratory dinner and will definitely be back. Food sumptuous and inventive."

  • "Nana's has the basics covered: tasty, well executed dishes with prompt and friendly service. It is "finer" dining in a casual atmosphere. I thought the price point was reasonable relative to the quality of the experience, but it is going to be significantly more expensive than its neighbors, Nana Taco and Q-Shack. The most similar dining experience I have had in the area is Elaine's in Chapel Hill, though Nana's is quieter and more refined."

  • "Nana's is terrific. Seating in boldly painted rooms with eye-catching art can be a bit noisy, but the food is stunning and the service more than attentive. We had the tasting menu and wine flight, and it was among the very best dinners we ever ate. Bold and distinctive tastes are blended imaginatively and everything is cooked perfectly. Pieces of halibut simply flaked off, tortellini was mouth-watering and the braised short rib could have been desert it was so delicious. And complimentary valet parking makes the whole thing really easy. Don't even think about it. Just go."

  • "Had a wonderful time at Nana's! Celebrated my birthday with family--two members had never been to Nana's before. The meal did not disappoint. Delicious drinks with a fabulous appetizer of fried green tomatoes that melted in your mouth with an explosion of flavors. Entrees were equally perfect. The swordfish was extraordinary and another diner raved about the rib eye. My son loved the cucumber soup and the parpadelle small plate with veal. For dessert, blueberry croustade with honey ice cream was to die for, and the creme brûlée was excellent as always. You can't go wrong at Nana's for a special meal anytime."

  • "I have spent many special occasions at Nana's over many many years and I have never had any thing but excellent food and excellent service. There is no better restaurant in North Carolina, perhaps the United States!"

  • "Great food and service, but it was a bit hard to find parking."

  • "What a wonderful experience Nana's is. A cocktail at the bar then on to dinner made for a perfect birthday evening. Love the California touches that bring this home for us. Great food!!"

  • "We were celebrating birthdays with friends and had a delightful meal. We all ordered seafood which was recommended by our server. It was all outstanding; grouper, mahi and halibut. There was not a drop left in anyone's plate. The fresh bread was to die for and the salads and risotto were done to perfection. The server mentioned all of the highlights and also that the vegetables were bought that morning from the farmers market. Our server was great and explained everything in great detail but in a precise and not intimidating way. We will go back for sure even though it is a bit of a drive from Pittsboro;well worth it!"

  • "On a trip to Durham, we visited Nana's again (after 4 year absence) and it is still GREAT. The service is top notch-- the food to die for and the bar is really happening-- nothing has changed since last time"

  • "Unbelievably creative, interesting and nuanced food. It was a splendid gourmet experience. I can't say enough about the fine food here. Great service too."

  • "We've been customers of Nana's for years and we've never been disappointed. The bartenders special cocktail are always different and delicious. The menu is so different and exciting. The one thing which we would like to see is local or heritage meat added to the menu. The service is always very attentive."

  • "We were very excited about trying Nana's, as we know of its outstanding reputation. However, we were really disappointed with our overall experience. The service was great, but the food really was mediocre; very surprising considering the price point. I ordered the roasted chicken and it was fine. Not bad, but nothing to write home about. The side of rabe was practically inedible. Husband ordered the ribeye and was hugely unsatisfied as it was presented untrimmed, and was soaked in an extremely harsh horseradish sauce. Overall, we really wish we had chosen a different restaurant for our anniversary celebration."

  • "It had been years since we had made the trip to Nana's, so we were very much looking forward to trying it again. Nana's did not disappoint! Seated before our reservations time, we took a table in the front room, which was spacious, full but not loud. We had an outstanding server who helped us with our choices on the menu and managed the night very well. My wife had the salmon gravlax and I had the mushroom torteloni from the June menu. Both great choices, but we agreed the torteloni was awesome. For entrees, I had the grilled mahi mahi and my wife the rabbit. Again, both were outstanding and just as our server had told us to expect. For dessert we split the panna cotta 'short cake' which we enjoyed. From start to finish a perfect evening. "

  • "We went to Nana's for the first time based upon positive recommendations from acquaintances and online reviews. Immediately upon being seated, our server arrived with an arrogant attitude. It did not matter what we asked questions about or requested (menu, wine list, main dishes, bread, salt, desserts) he treated us with disdain. His replies to us were unbelievably rude. As far as the food goes, the swordfish, gnocchi, and crostata were tasteless. The risotto, however, was good. Our party of five spent way too much money for average food and incredibly contemptuous service. We will not go back again."

  • "The service was TERRIBLE!! The service staff walked past us over and over again without asking us if we were ready to give our orders. Finally I had to ask for bread and to have our orders taken after sitting there 15 minutes with no service. The food was good, but not worth the neglect. "

  • "Nana's continues its good restaurant reputation. However, several observations on this most recent visit -- valet parking has used up the previous spaces beside and behind the restaurant (other parking spaces are hard to find); the first dining room (just behind the hostess stand) is quite noisy; service personnel are stationed (very visibly) in each dining area; individual chair might be more comfortable than bench seating against the wall. Otherwise, it was the usual, enjoyable dining experience here."

  • "Nana's professionalism continues to delight! The service, food, wine list and ambiance are treasures. Nana's is a lovely dining experience."

  • "This birthday dinner was our second visit and we were pleased again by the service, menu choices, and creative food preparation. Overall excellent! Our only caveat would be the lack of parking spaces for a restaurant of this size and popularity - even early in the evening and early in the week."

  • "We celebrated a special occasion here & had high hopes after hearing about Nana's & reading positive reviews about the service. We were disappointed that the food courses came out irregularly, our server (who never gave his name so I can't even tell you who he is) did have a LOT to say about the wines, but the wine courses did not arrive with food courses in the tasting menu, & he never apologized for the delays & weird timing. Perhaps he was stressed by a kitchen mishap & did not mean to come across as rude, but it felt to us he did not care. As for the food, it did not blow us away. We've eaten better meals, especially for a $150 price tag for two. I wish I'd chosen somewhere else for this very special occasion. "

  • "Delicious and creative menu, as always. The noise level seemed particularly loud and it was difficult to hear regular conversation, but it seemed particularly crowded for a Tuesday eve. and the noise level improved as the tables cleared."

  • "This was or first experience with Nana's. It is up scale in food quality (and price). I had the veal special. It was great. The pasta appetizer was good. I regret we had no room for dessert. The wine list looked impressive but we did not partake. The service was attentive and friendly."

  • "Interesting, seasonal food, expertly prepared--but it's the wonderfully attentive, yet never intrusive, service that may impress most. Although I'm still mourning the loss of The Magnolia Grill, Nana's is Durham's next best thing. (And the foie gras appetizer special--let it be said--was better than MG's."

  • "The food/atmosphere is good but honestly doesn't measure up to the price. I took my girlfriend there the night I proposed to her, so I don't frequent these places all that often. I dressed up, but I didn't look rich. I think the wait staff could tell, and so I think that's why they treated us a bit differently than tables even right next to us, where the people were more obviously loaded. I though that was to be expected, but still kind of classless. Here's the bottom-line. Nana's is more of a place where rich people go to feel rich and have their butts kissed. If you're into that sort of thing, then by all means. If you're looking for a special experience with great food, forget -- not worth the price."

  • "In a word, AMAZING! Daniel, our server, was attentive and knowledgeable about the menu and gave great recommendations. The food was perfectly executed and well presented. The striped bass was fresh and delicate and the accompanying sauce made the dish flawless. If it were up to me I would have gone back the next evening. I would also recommend the risotto and the pear tart."
