Diner Reviews
  • "Disappointed with their signature Mochi Crusted Opakapaka. The fish was not tender but dry. I regretted ordering it. The asparagus appetizer was very good but the special appetizer (steak skewers with tortilla crust) was not what I expected. It was rather soggy. The surf and turf was nothing special. Very pricy for a very small steak on lobster mashed potatoes. The service was friendly however we were not overly impressed with the quality of the food."

  • "Good kicked-up local comfort food with great desserts."

  • "Had a great dinner of Fried Chicken, Ceasar Salad, Kalbi, Beef Tenderloin and Affogato for dessert. Everything exceeded my expectations as far as taste. Absolutely would go again. Service was a little slow and it wasn't busy at the time we went. Although the bread and water boy was really attentive. Parking is really limited and there's valet so that's always a plus. But the food is amazing and I can't wait to go again soon."

  • "Interesting, tasty and amazing! A foodie delight. It was wonderful to have something different from same ole choices. Each dish was unique and delicious. I'll be back just to try more. And I must say that the servers were very attentive, efficient and knowledgable. It helped to make it a memorable meal."

  • "This was my 2nd dinner here and I guess it depends on what you order. I didn't enjoy my 1st dinner here, but I loved EVERYTHING at the 2nd dinner: ahi poke, arancini, beet salad, asparagus, Big Island beef tenderloin which was one of the night's specials & served with kabayaki unagi was very good and cooked perfectly medium rare as requested. The grilled twin Bridge Farms asparagus was a daily special simply listed on the menu with bacon vinaigrette. The dish arrived as a beautiful stacked tower of young asparagus with minced onions and a minced hard boiled egg & sprouts and nice dressing! The meyer lemon meringue brulee and strawberry "lava flow" with coconut tapioca, haupia sorbet and shaved strawberries were a nice finish for our meal."

  • "Another great lunch at MW. Service was the best this time. We have been her 3x before and this by far was the best service we ever had as the Manager Joel waited on us. It was busy, but the food and the service was very good. We started with the calarmari and Kale and Caesar salad. The oil seemed a bit dirty as the calamari had a bit of a rancit flavor, but it was still edible. We had the butterfish and Kalbi short ribs - both were good. The desserts are exceptional and the hi-light of the lunch. We had the lava flow and the lemon meringue tapioca. wow.... extremely good."

  • "We were celebrating my wife's birthday and her menu had a nice Happy Birthday printed on it. Also she left with a bag of delicious cookies. Nice touches. Food and service excellent as on our prior visits"

  • "Good food:good service. Salads are great. Mochi crusted fish is delectable. The desserts are beyond description."

  • "Highly recommend flavorful pork belly/corned beef/oxtail soup. Lots of meat and flavor. Ginger and green onion boosts flavor but not needed. Expensive but filling and worth it!"

  • "We loved the food and that is what we came for...their upscale re-imagined local favorites were deliciously executed. The oxtail "stew and rice" with beef risotto was super tasty, as was the "gumbo." In both cases, there was no stew, or soup...all those flavors were absorbed into the moist, rich delicious rice. You must order dessert! We had a "localicious" special...a lemon brulee with lemon tart. It was so complex and interesting and beautiful to look at, and sweet and lovely. However, the dining room is loud. I had a hard time hearing my husband over the din of a very full house, with several large, boisterous parties. The service was razor sharp efficiency, and people were kind, but I couldn't hear a word our servers said."

  • "- overall good mix of original tastes - great adaptation of other dishes "a la MW" - some overlap in the dishes (appetizer vs. main); butterfish/unagi arancini vs. main dish - service was quick but one minor criticism; servers explain each dish at 100 mph...understand they're in a hurry - decor could be improved with some art pieces on the walls - having said all this, if the focus is just on food and not overall experience, great place to just chow down"

  • "cool. Hip groove.... But cold, need textile, art to soften it up. Excellent valet/reception. Good service ..... But waiter selling, selling that special dinner. Servers must be able to read the table. When price fixe meal is not what diners are looking for, then it is rude to force the issue. fish, was excellent; couple fusion Asian appys were overly spiced /not well combined. beef kabob was a visual and taste disaster and the dipping sauce for the calamari was distasteful; being "unique" is one thing but throwing ingredients together is another They need to establish who they are (not be an Alan Wong's wannabe). If you want to be unique, then carve out your own niche. Will try again and see how this inventive Chef has evolved."

  • "First time ever, my two picky (when it comes to food) daughters told my wife and" "we need to come here" ."

  • "This was my second time at MW and it didn't disappoint. We shared appetizers, salads, entrees and desserts, and everyone walked away stuffed. There was a special decoration on my aunt's birthday dessert we had ordered, and she got to take home a cute bag of cookies afterwards. The food is really spectacular here."

  • "...seem to have discovered MW. Fine Hawaiian Regional cuisine -- everything from the bread to the salads to the entrees were excellent. Kalbi ribs and mochi crusted opakapaka were our party's favorites. Only desserts were not excellent. They were way beyond excellent! The crowd went wild. Can't comment on the wine list; but the non-alcohol special drinks were fine. Wish they'd have a local or house-made sparkling water. The NZ water was fine but the carbon footprint very heavy. That minor point aside a wonderful spot! Get there before MW finds it's way on to the Japanese guidebook lists. That'll be good for business; bad for getting last minute reservations."

  • "This new restaurant is a welcome addition to the Honolulu dining scene. Great energy, creativity and execution on fusion of classical and Hawaiian cuisine. Mocha Opakapaka was among best fish dishes I have ever enjoyed. Diverse green salads, inventive house cocktails and portuguese bean soup were outstanding. Service was attentive and friendly. Although we ate dinner on our first visit, I will be more inclined toward an MW lunch next time. We enjoyed MW this week while travelling on holiday but I will be more inclined to eat at MW in the future for lunch. Several of the dishes are over-priced for dinner fare that one might otherwise order at a diner - ie. the Fried Chicken appetizer and the Toncatsu. The "cheesecake" likewise is not a cake."

  • "Very noisy. Poor "side dish" for asian like me, e.g. use "non delicious" Kimchee at the side. SoMen under the fish, not good way to use Somen. Not my style, might be good for people who do not know the real way to eat them."

  • "I took my wife to the MW restaurant for an early dinner and we were very pleased with our dining experience. We were on a tight schedule and did not have time to enjoy a dessert, but we will definitely come back when we have more time."

  • "When a restaurant gets a great deal of hype it is always tough to separate the facts from the hype. In this case, this was our second trip to MW and on both occasions, we were very disappointed by the service. The little things like getting our water and and drink orders in seemed to take forever. At one point, we had to track down a manager because our server seemed lost. Later in the meal, she took away a signature drink when I was done with it without asking if I'd like another. I would have had she asked. The food was okay and some of the flavors meshed well, but on the whole it wasn't excellent which is what we expected. Another challenge was the 15 minute wait between dropping off the desert menus and coming back to check on us"

  • "The food and service were excellent. Definitely coming back to try more of the menu."

  • "This is my 4th experience here and the service has let us down again. We had a 9:15 p.m. reservation and there were only a handful of tables finishing up in the restaurant. As soon as we sat, we could tell that the server did not want to wait on us. He got our order wrong, sent the dessert out with our food, messed up the bill and was just irritated to have a late table. If they do not want to have anyone arrive after 9 p.m. then they shouldn't take reservations at that time. Busser was good with refilling waters and giving us bread and I think the manager delivered most of the food. The server was just MIA most of the time."

  • "$5 Kalua Pig Tacos - 3 stale tortilla chips topped with oily Kalua pig | $5 Fish Cakes - 2 skewers of three fish balls each, the kind you find at hot pot places, nothing special. We first asked our waitress if this was good, she recommended it. Then we asked her how many pieces, she said "Actually i'm not too sure, I've never seen it before. I think it comes with 3pcs? 5pcs? 3? 5? Actually, I think it's 3 pieces." OH MY! | $10 Pork Belly Bao - 3pcs, it was okay | $35 Steak and Potatoes - Asked for medium rare, came out medium well. Told the waitress, she said "ohhh" and walked away. Not impressed | $32 Seafood Gumbo - Super salty and scallops were rubbery. Quiet expensive | For the foodies that we are, we will not be returning."

  • "We struggled with choosing what to eat - because everything on the menu sounded amazing. The selection that we went with were all AMAZING! The calamari - (the dipping sauce was OOTW!!), fried chicken - (w/skin and pressed before frying- UNBELIEVABLE) mochi crusted opakapaka - (perfectly cooked!), adobo pork shank - (ridiculous, fall-off-the-bone awesomeness!). The only disappointment was that we had to stop ourselves from cleaning our plates of the above, in order to squeeze in a dessert (bananas foster - stupid!). I will definitely have to go back to try everything else - ESP. all of the desserts!!"

  • "Although MW was just nominated for a James Beard award, we had actually heard a few non-favorable reviews from people that had gone to this restaurant before. However, it seems that they fixed most of their problems. We had a reservation for 2 at 7 PM and were seated right away. My husband had the 5 course tasting menu that was $65 which I think is a pretty good deal. I had the beet salad, which was amazing, and the "stew and rice" which was an oxtail roulade on risotto. Very good. The tasting menu appetiizer actually had a bite of 4 appetizers. All good, although the least good was the fried oyster. He also had the mochi-crusted fish, which was delicious and a tenderloin on top of risotto. Desserts cannot be missed!"

  • "This is my new favorite restaurant. The pipikaula on the burger is amazing. I usually get the burger and a Golden Sabbath beer (off the scale delicious). This time I tried the beet salad, which blew my mind. I also tried the Tonkatsu sandwich...OMG! Do NOT forget about desert, the passion-orange cremecicle and the kula strawberry cheesecake are not to be missed. On top of having some of the best food in Hawaii the staff is friendly and work like clockwork. There is a very kind manager there named Joel who is not afraid to get dirty and help the runners and the bussers. I can see he earns respect by leading by example. Thank to him and the chef there is a new place for locals to get high quality farm-to-table fresh food."

  • "Honolulu has many good restaurants; this one will be great. Had the chefs tasting menu with wine pairings. Every morsel was innovative and delicious. Especially enjoyed the mochi crusted fish. No words to describe the dessert...it was heavenly. Our server was very generous describing each dish and getting us more info when we asked questions. Everyone was friendly and gracious. We expect to return soon."

  • "The visual presentation on every plate sets the diner for the experience and the taste follows with delightful surprises. Our menus were personalized menu for our anniversary - nice touch. We shared the pickled beet salad featuring local beets in a variety of colors and Big Island goat cheeses - exquisite presentation and a delightful taste sensation in the mouth. Dinner was Kauai Shrimp with Seafood Ravioli (him) and Mochi Crusted Opakapaka (her). We savored every morsel. Dessert - he scored the Waialua Chocolate Banana Cream Pie and she "inhaled" (politely, of course) the Passion Orange Creamsicle Brûlée - Both desserts were pure joy for the tastebuds. We enjoyed attentive, knowledgable, superb service from Vian, and his second, Kurt."

  • "Chose this restaurant somewhat randomly from Open Table and we sure made a great choice. We had a couple of hours to kill between our inter island flight from Maui and our very long flight home to New Jersey. We grabbed a cab and decided to have a relatively light but filling meal. The beet salad was wonderful ( their take was original and unusual but not fussy); my fish entree on a bed of noodles was hands-down delicious. By the time we left the restaurant was hopping with an interesting cross-section of locals and tourists. Can't wait to go back."

  • "We've dined here twice and each experience has been exceptional. There is a varied selection of appetizers, entrees and the desserts are "to die for". The decor is austere and the noise level is acceptable ... there is a sense of vibrancy and energy... highly recommended!"
    Dined on 2/15/2014
  • "We got the lobster pizza, kale salad (add ahi for $6 more makes a difference), and ahi tacos and strawberry cake. Everything was fantastic. Our server was energetic and the area was clean. Been here three times and gets better with each visit. Only problem is parking. It is very limited"

  • "Flavors were uneven and clashed, food was oily and greasy, particularly calamari appetizer which was also rubbery. Way overpriced for quality of dishes and small portions. Even dessert was sub par."
    Dined on 2/13/2014
  • "Great place for a unique, upbeat meal...dishes are creatively prepared, unique, attractive. Very open, bright, noisy so good for a small group of friends."
    Dined on 2/12/2014
  • "Food overall was good but inconsistent and not well explained. Appetizer came with a surprise curry sauce that was a little over powering. Wish it was described on the menu. Bouillabaise came on white rice and was thick like a stew. Flavor was good but the unattached shrimp tails were off putting. Dessert had a big description for such a tiny portion. Too many repetetive items and I thought overly complex. Simplicity can be a good thing. Not a whole lot for a vegetarian to eat on this menu. Overall earnest staff could use a little more training."
